Her family is not making it easy for her to do this. She begins and ends each day trying to be good enough for the people around her while trying to fit into a mold she may never fit into. I know I am not the intended audience of this book, but I'm glad I read it. I think all young people could learn a thing or two about not knowing what goes on in other peoples lives when they are not in school or at work by reading this book. It is enjoyable but heart breaking in some parts....more
Sal and Gabi do not start out as friends, but they are both good people at heart and they cannot help that a friendship develops between them. I belieSal and Gabi do not start out as friends, but they are both good people at heart and they cannot help that a friendship develops between them. I believe the best way to describe this book would be people are all unique in their own way, and you just don’t know what is going on at home when you only see them in school. The setting for this book is a performing arts school in Miami. There are all types of people within this story, one character has diabetes and lives with dietary limitations, one has several dads, one has a horrible home life, one is the new guy in school and one has a very ill sibling. And there’s a whole lot of sci-fi! There’s something for everyone....more

It treats them like intelligent beings and tells them a story.” That’s it - simple. Matilda is an intelligent 5 year old that can outsmart most of the adults around her. She only does so when they have treated her poorly. She is able to do things most young teens wish they could. It’s a quick read and it’s fun. ...more

It’s a sweet book told from the point of view of a gorilla that has been in captivity for 27 years. There’s sadness, love, friendship and kindness throughout. I believe anyone who enjoys reading will enjoy this story....more

I was curious because I had never heard of the book or the author, but my kids are older and I mentally filed the information away. More recently I read he had a new book out, Look Both Ways, and I remembered that I was interested in his writing. I put a hold on the digital book and it came in during the quarantine. I read it in two sittings. It’s a book about young teens and in ten short stories the walk home from school is experienced from ten different points of view. The stories and characters overlap and there is a recurring bus element to the stories. Each story has a point and you will be left thinking about the characters and their families long after the book is complete. I look forward to reading all of Jason Reynolds books if this one is any indications their quality....more

This is story of a young girl and her dad who have experienced a tragedy, and how they move through the world afterwards. It’s beautifully written and I lost myself in the story. I’m looking forward to reading other stories by this author. I have to admit that the cover art really caught my attention and between that and a recommendation from my sister I knew I’d enjoy this book!...more
