At that point, the book changes from mostly anecdotes from women who lived through absolutely horrific medical experiences to nonstop COVID. And a lot of it wasn’t really medical in nature, and most of it didn’t have anything to do with pain, or how it was killing women.
The synopsis was incredibly misleading, as was the title. If I wanted a book about COVID, I would have requested a book about COVID. I have books about COVID on my bookshelf. I wanted a book about medical professionals not taking women seriously, and this book is not that. ...more

Since I don’t feel comfortable tanking the rating of this book just because I couldn’t get into it, (which is a shame, I was really interested in this subject!) I’m going to leave it alone, but I probably would have given it one or two stars.
To start, there’s a truly excessive number of quotations and initialisms. For the quotations, Williams quotes from dozens and dozens of people, and it’s hard to keep up with. And the initialisms! On every page there’s probably two or three different ones, and I had to keep going back to see what they stood for. I get why you can’t keep spelling out “All African People’s Conference” every time, but I personally could not keep up with them all.
I ended up skipping around until about halfway through and then I DNF’d. Williams was incredibly thorough in her research but this reads more like a research paper, and it was hard to get into. ...more

My favorite bit of advice was picking five new food items per week and trying them out, and I figured I could try that, or even just one and try cooking it different ways.
However, and I’m sure this is no fault of Cambridge University Press, but there were so many formatting issues that it was nearly impossible to read the advance copy I got through NetGalley that I had to give up reading. I still got some useful information from the book, but wow, it was frustrating. ...more

What the hell is this magic shit? Who decided that sending off their (female) children to possibly be tortured to death and/or murdered by other children was a great idea? Why is Tyranny such a terrible character? “I’m not like those other girls!!!” Fuck off.
You can’t write a book about feminism and have the main character think like that. Jesus Christ.
