What worked: Breathtaking European destinations with copious amounts of mouthwatering food and wine. Dual POV (first half- Theo. second half- Kit). Gender, queerness, and queer relationships represented so well. Sexually open and diverse. So.many.hookups. What didn't work: Sexually open and diverse (yes it worked and didn't). Lack of trademark humor. Pacing- 2nd half was better, but it was slow going. Second chance romance where the emotional back story isn't impactful enough to buy in to the 2nd chance-ness....more

I really enjoyMarriage of convenience to save a bookstore and a publishing company? I’m in! Ok- so it’s more of a fake dating deal but still- I’m in! I really enjoyed this authors Written in the Stars “series” because they are sweet and swoony with some serious spice. Same here. There are endearingly tender moments followed by moments of undeniable chemistry. I didn’t love it on audio because the narrator popped their P’s a bit much- but that’s a me problem....more

The story of Viola and Gracewood had so much emotion. A sweet, slow burn that is compounded by big physical and emotional pain from their pasts. It was unlike anything I've read and I'm so glad to see the representation in historical romance.
At 480pages/15 1/2 hrs., it sometimes felt a bit long. Hall likes words and conversation. That's not a bad thing, but sometimes it started to bog down the pacing. While certain sections could have used a tighter edit, not the epilogue, that was sublime.
Thanks to @librofm for the free audiobook. I thoroughly enjoyed the narration.

All that said- I had a hard time fully engaging with Kian and Hudson's relationship. We never learn about what went wrong with Kian and Hudson's relationship for them to break up originally. Without that back story it was hard to connect with their current status much less root for their second chance. I needed that backstory for the rest of the threads to pull together into a complete picture. So- I didn’t love it and I didn’t hate it. But I enjoyed it enough to read more by the author. ...more
