For more than twenty-five years, author and pastor Larry Huntsperger has spent hundreds of hours studying New Testament documents in preparation for writing this fictional first-person account of the life of this enigmatic disciple. The result is a novel that faithfully follows Scripture while offering a powerful, fresh narration of the story of one of Christianity’s greatest men. In the fast-paced chapters of The Fisherman, readers will relive Peter’s initial resistance to the pull he feels toward Jesus and his ministry. They’ll walk with Peter alongside Jesus through the events of the Gospels and catch intimate glimpses of the disciples’ personalities. They’ll even “feel” the dust on the roads as familiar stories are transformed into original, spellbinding accounts from Peter’s life. This fascinating novel will help readers “to see the Master as a man. For, if we cannot see him correctly as a man, we have no hope of understanding him correctly as our God.” My Review: The Fisherman was a very moving story narrated in the first-person by Simon whom Jesus renamed Peter, “The Rock.” Peter was a man like so many of us, we each have our own agenda on how Jesus should work in our lives but when He shows us the correct way, we often do the opposite. What happened to “THY WILL be done?” Mr. Huntsperger managed to pen this novel in such a way that I felt throughout the book that He was talking to me. I can’t believe the level of love that I felt nor the emotions his words invoked in me. I feel I now have a much better understanding of Jesus through the way He talked and in the way Mr. Huntsperger presented the information. The vivid descriptions and the way in which the material was presented made me feel as though I was there. In my mind’s eye I could clearly see Jesus and the twelve disciples and could feel the sand under my feet and the wind blowing through my hair. The emotions this story invokved in me was real and there were times when I hung my head in shame and others where the tears were dripping down my cheeks. Mr. Huntsperger is a talented writer with the uncanny ability to place the reader into the pages of the book. The disciples were just ordinary everyday people like you and I and I wonder had we been there then would we have been chosen to be a disciple? The epilogue at the end added that extra umpf and was phenomenal. This book was a real eye-opener and one that I will be reading again and again. Thank you Mr. Huntsperger for penning a novel in lay-man’s terms that we could understand. Baker Publishing Group | September 2, 2014 | Hardcover | ISBN # 978-0-7542-1245-1 My Review: Tilly has been gone from her Amish home for eight years now Baker Publishing Group | September 2, 2014 | Hardcover | ISBN # 978-0-7542-1245-1 My Review: Tilly has been gone from her Amish home for eight years now and has been living the life of an Englisher. She uses all the modern conveniences of the English world even driving a red car. Growing up she never had the use of modern conveniences and her family would be so dismayed to see her using them now. But Tilly wasn't treated very well by her Dad all her growing up years, it's like he hated her for some reason and their is a family secret that will be revealed in the story to explain this. However, even as her English husband has said, Tilly may be English in a lot of ways but she hasn't lost her hard work ethic she learned growing up Amish. "Amish roots are planted deep within her." Tilly is also passing her Amish roots onto their two four-year-old daughters, Jenya and Tavani. Tilly has received a note in the mail from one of her brothers, Melvin, requesting she return to their Amish home for an anniversary celebration and he wants her to convince her younger sister, Ruthie to come with her. Ruthie is also living the English life but is unmarried and their Dad blames Tilly for as he says convincing Ruth to go English too. Tilly was unsure as to whether she was brave enough to return home considering the way her Dad has always acted toward her. She and her father just never saw eye-to-eye, and Tilly still felt responsible for the death of another sister at age five and going home would mean perhaps reliving those memories. Five years after Tilly left for the English world, Ruthie followed in her footsteps. Of course their father blamed Tilly for that. Tilly and Ruth's father, at age 58, isn't doing so very well. His heart is giving up and if he wants to live beyond a few more months, then he would need to have a pacemaker implanted but Melvin and his other brothers feel there is no way their father will go for that. He really needs Tilly and Ruth to come home for this November celebration but hated to use their father's ill health to get them there. What will he do? Even Melvin's wife, Susannah thought Melvin should tell Tilly and Ruth about their Dad's weak heart. Somehow he had to convince the two sisters to come home and who knows, this may be the last opportunity for the entire family to be together at once. Finally, Tilly and Ruth decide to go home for the celebration with much trepidation. Is it going to be a happy, nice reunion/celebration or one filled will angst and trouble? THE RIVER is a beautiful read for a nice rainy day. You just hunker down with a hot cup of tea and read away as you'll be captivated from the first page to the last ...more |

MY REVIEW: Baker Publishing Group|June 3, 2014|Trade Paperback|ISBN: 978-0-7642-1254-3 Flight instructor Jack Livingston has been raising his eight-year MY REVIEW: Baker Publishing Group|June 3, 2014|Trade Paperback|ISBN: 978-0-7642-1254-3 Flight instructor Jack Livingston has been raising his eight-year-old adopted niece, Natalie, since the accident that took her parents' lives. When he travels, Natalie is tenderly cared for by her Amish nanny, Laura Mast, who loves the little girl as her own. Eight excruciating years ago, Kelly Maine's baby was kidnapped. Determined to find her child, Kelly has tirelessly pursued every lead to its bitter end. And now, with the clock ticking, one last clue from a private investigator ignities a tiny flame of hope: Just a few miles away lives a young girl who matches the profile. Can this be, at long last, Kelly's beloved daughter? I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and was completely stumped as to who Natalie's birth mother was. At one point I thought for sure I had it figured out but I was wrong and I certainly never saw this ending coming. I was quite taken aback at finding out who really was her birth mother. Reading CHILD OF MINE was like reading non-fiction, I had to keep reminding myself that this was a fiction novel and not a true story. It was so well-written and could have been taken out of the pages of the newspaper of the many other times we've heard about these very same cases. Natalie had been kidnapped by her birth father and sold into the black market adoption ring never to be seen again for eight long years. Kelly Maine's jumped through every hoop possible to find the daughter she so very much missed. Lucky for her she had the backing of a wealthy couple who backed her up financially with a private investigator to help her track down possible candidates, but for years they all turned into dead ends. That is, until she heard about Natalie, could she be the one? Is Kelly's search finally over? ...more |

Story Description: Baker Publishing Group|June 3, 2014|Trade Paperback|ISBN: 978-0-8007-2218-0 Anglican Mary Langton longs to marry for love. Puritan Ba Story Description: Baker Publishing Group|June 3, 2014|Trade Paperback|ISBN: 978-0-8007-2218-0 Anglican Mary Langton longs to marry for love. Puritan Barnabas Horton is still in love with his deceased wife and needs only a mother for his two young sons. And yet these two very different people with very different expectations will take a leap of faith, wed, and then embark on a life-changing journey across the ocean to the Colonies. Along the way, each much learn to live in harmony, to wait on God, and to recognize true love where they least expect to find it. This heartfelt tale of love and devotion is based on debut author Rebecca DeMarino's own ancestors, who came to Long Island in the mid-1600's to establish a life-and a legacy-in the New World. MY REVIEW: I felt so sorry for Mary in this story. She loved Barnabas so deeply and was such a good mother to his two boys, but Barnabas couldn't allow himself to love Mary in return. He was still too deeply in love with his deceased first wife, Anne. As patient as Mary was, no matter what she did, what work she took on, no matter how many people she helped, no matter the amount of meals she prepared or the sewing she did, nothing could make Barnabas say those three words of "I love you" to her. Barnabas's two young boys were good kids, but the eldest boy never accepted, Mary either and gave her a hard time, constantly. He was outright rude to her and went out of his way to make it known he was not at all happy that she was a part of their family. They decide to cross the ocean to the new world and Mary has her hopes set that this change of venue will also change Barnabas. Will this brave and daring move get Mary what she wants or will she always languish as nothing more than a glorified babysitter for his two sons? ...more |

Story Description: Baker Publishing Group|April 1, 2014|Trade Paperback|ISBN: 978-0-7642-1160-7 Powerful Retelling of the Story of Esther In 1944, blond Story Description: Baker Publishing Group|April 1, 2014|Trade Paperback|ISBN: 978-0-7642-1160-7 Powerful Retelling of the Story of Esther In 1944, blond and blue-eyed Jewess Hadassah Benjamin feels abandoned by God when she is saved from a firing squad only to be handed over to a new enemy. Pressed into service by SS-Kommandant Colonel Aric von Schmidt at the transit camp of Theresienstadt in Czechoslovakia, she is able to hid behind the false identity of Stella Muller. However, in order to survive and maintain her cover as Aric's secretary, she is forced to stand by as her own people are sent to Auschwitz. Suspecting her employer is a man of hidden depths and sympathies, Stella cautiously appeals to him on behalf of those in the camp. Aric's compassion gives her hope, and she finds herself battling a growing attraction for this man she knows she shosuld despise as an enemy. Stella pours herself into her efforts to keep even some of the camp's prisoners safe, but she risks the revelation of her true identity with every attempt. When her bravery brings her to the point of the ultimate sacrifice, she has only her faith to lean upon. Perhaps God has placed her there for such a time as this, but how can she save her people when she unable to save herself? My Review: I believe the story description above is pretty self-explanatory as to what this story is about and don't really have much to add. I loved this book so much that I'm afraid of giving away too many details and don't want to spoil the story for other people. Stella, or Queen Esther was an immensely brave woman who saved her people at great cost to herself but she never faltered in her belief that she would somehow accomplish this feat. I was glued to this book from the first page to the very last and read it in two sittings. If it hadn't been for interruptions from my dogs, I would have read it in one sitting. I'm most surprised at the fact that FOR SUCH A TIME is Ms. Breslin's first novel for she writes as that of a well-seasoned author. I look forward to more novels in the future. Well-done! ...more |

Story Description: WestBow Press|January 20, 2014|Trade Paperback|ISBN: 978-1-4908-1096-6 Michael Salter appears to be living a normal, respectable life Story Description: WestBow Press|January 20, 2014|Trade Paperback|ISBN: 978-1-4908-1096-6 Michael Salter appears to be living a normal, respectable life as a devoted husband and psychologist when he finds his brother's lifeless body inside an abandoned cabin in the middle of the desert. As his faith in God shatters, Michael's entire life begins to unravel. From his wife to his career, everything he relies upon for stability and sanity begins to fall away. Beaten to his knees, Michael flees to a remote region of the Sierras, where he descends deeply into despair. But after an intuitive dream, Michael is compelled to return to civilization. There, he meets the woman of his destiny at a party celebrating her engagement to a wealthy business tycoon. Laura and Michael's attraction to each other cannot be denied, but the obstacles seem insurmountable as deeply personal challenges lead each on an intense, spriitual journey to ultimately discover Christ's Spirit in their hearts. THE DIVINE SUMMIT is a story of intrigue, romance, and adventure. It is a tale of the miraculous power of Christ's love to heal us of our deepest pain and fears, and reveals a profound intimacy between a man and a woman that can only be experienced through the grace of God. My Review: Michael Salter found his brother, Brian dead in the middle of the desert where he'd been living. The moment, Michael saw the dead body, his heart, his mind, and his soul shattered into a million pieces. Michael felt his life would never be the same again. One night, Michael had a dream. He was supposed to attend an engagement party at the Beverly Hills Hotel for a man named, David Granik. David was one of the most "influential tycoons in the city of Los Angeles." As, Michael stood in the Crystal Room he wondered to himself what he was actually doing there for he knew he had absolutely nothing in common with anyone in attendance. Other than David, he knew he wouldn't know another single person there. His dream had led him to believe he was supposed to meet someone important at this party. After having just spent thirty days backpacking through the High Sierras alone, he felt even more out of place at this gathering. Michael was a completely shattered man. He'd lost his faith, he'd lost his brother, and he lost his wife, Patricia when she walked out on him and moved to San Francisco. Michael could barely believe that just three short months ago he was a successful clinical psychologist at UCLA with a prosperous practice in Westwood Village, a beautiful home, and a beautiful wife. How could one man become so beaten down in such a short time? Soon the orchestra started up and David and his fiancee, Laura entered the room. Michael was immediately taken with Laura and her intense beauty, especially her "...brilliant blue eyes..." He couldn't understand what had come over him but he felt an extremely strong attraction to Laura, but yet did not know her at all. He had never reacted in such a way before and it startled him. He was utterly "mesmerized" by her. Later in the evening, he danced with, Laura and he knew that she felt something for him too. One saving grace for, Michael was having met, Laura's Uncle Hermann at the engagement party. The two had sat together at dinner and Hermann told, Michael a little bit about Laura. Michael admitted to Hermann that he had never before felt this way about a woman like he did, Laura and just didn't understand it. At least now, Michael had a sort of confidante in Hermann, someone he could share his feelings with. Hermann hadn't had a perfect life either and had at one time become disillusioned with God himself so he understood how, MIchael felt. He offered to be Michael's mentor in Christ and Michael took him up on the deal. Herman advised, Michael that it wouldn't be an easy thing to go through and that ridding himself of his anguish and angry feelings toward God would be painful but something he must absolutely go through in order to understand what true "grace" was. Hermann understood that God was doing some work in Michael, but Michael couldn't see that yet, just as he himself couldn't when God was working in him. He felt that the Lord was directing him to help Michael find his path to healing which is why he offered to be his spiritual mentor. Hermann told Michael that he needed to depend on God, completely, for all support but Michael didn't trust God so wondered how he would rely on HIm at this moment in his life? Hermann told Michael that the reliance would come in time. Over the next while, Laura too realized just how attracted she herself was to, Michael and couldn't understand it either. She was supposed to be marrying David in five short weeks, not having these intense feelings for another man. One day on a picnic to a beautiful lake near Malibu, Laura confided in, MIchael that she had been thinking about the connection between them. She said she'd completely blocked out her spiritual experience on a Christian retreat she'd been on. But it wasn't until, MIchael asked her if she had received Christ that it came back to her. During her times of meditation she prayed that God give her peace. She was so used to saying this prayer that she didn't even think about it, but now realized that God had answered her prayers, many times. Michael asked Laura "...in what way?" and she responded "It's almost as if His Spirit merges with my heart and then I'm at peace and my mind is perfectly still. I think I did receive the Holy Spirit" and then told, Michael "maybe you see the Spirit in me and that's what's attracting you." Laura then commented how odd she thought it was that Michael could see the light in her but, David couldn't. Michael could often see the Spirit of her soul glowing in her face. Michael and Laura both had a lot of spiritual work to do. In reading the rest of this wonderful story you'll see how each of them comes to Christ and how their awareness of God's great word and the gifts he bestows upon us can heal us for a lifetime. Like Hermann reminds, Michael in the story that once you've received Christ and His Spirit, that is totally "irreversible!" When we give up on God, God does NOT give up on us. He uses every situation to teach us lessons for life. When we're suffering and feel miserable, we should be thanking God for the experience, not being angry with HIm. God's grace is always with you. Michael is a beaten down man and Laura is a confused woman. They both need to surrender to the grace of God. I would like to say "thank you" to Dr. Steven Panzer for sending me a copy of THE DIVINE SUMMIT in return for an honest review. I hope you all enjoy this book and learn as much as I did. ...more |

Story Description: eBook ISBN: 978-0-9860573-0-4 Ever wondered how Santa Claus came to be? This book will permit you and your family to enjoy Santa Clau Story Description: eBook ISBN: 978-0-9860573-0-4 Ever wondered how Santa Claus came to be? This book will permit you and your family to enjoy Santa Claus and the other secular customs of Christmas within the Christian celebration of Jesus’s birth. For little children, Santa Claus becomes a real person delivering presents to them from Jesus. Each Christmas season, reading a chapter a night will become a holiday tradition for the entire family. The tale begins with Shai and Adi, the childless owners of an Inn in Bethlehem. When Shai rents out their bedroom, they must sleep in the stable. During the night, Joseph and Mary arrive and Adi helps Mary through a difficult labor. They bond, and when an angel appears telling Joseph to flee Egypt with Mary and Jesus, Shai and Adi go with them and become Jesus’s uncle and aunt. The book tells of Jesus growing up with his friends Mary Magdalene and John, his ministry, and his death and resurrection. These vignettes teach the lessons of life and the Bible through Jesus’s experiences. The book concludes with Shai and Adi following the Lord’s Star to the North Pole, where angels have built a palace. Jesus wants Shai and Adi to raise the baby angels there until they reach adulthood. The baby angels, or elves as the grown angels derogatively refer to them, are a mischievous lot. Shai becomes known as Santa Claus when a baby angel mispronounces “Shai, Uncle of Jesus,” claus being the angelic word for uncle. Jesus also wants to give a present to each boy and girl on his birthday. Christmas Day, a tradition he began during his life when he gave presents to his family. As part of their training, once a baby angel sprouts wings he or she is assigned to watch children and make toys for them. On Christmas Eve, Santa flies the sleigh to heaven to present the new adult angels to God, and then flies around the world delivering Jesus’s presents to the children of the world. The book is a story within a story, told by a visiting uncle to a little girl and her nephew. Each night before bedtime beginning on December 6th, St. Nicholas’s Day, and continuing through Christmas Eve, the uncle tells part of the story. Instead of numbers, the chapters are titled by day. The book can be read as a normal book or a chapter each day, and it can be read to oneself or out loud to children. When read out loud, the chapter lengths vary between 10 and 15 minutes. Wherever you may live, and by whatever name that you may know him – Santa Claus, Saint Nick, Kris Kringle, Father Christmas, Pere Noel or Sinter Klaas – you will never forget the true story of Santa Claus, as you read it every Christmas with your children, who will someday read it every Christmas with their children too. My Review: Aunt Trixie, Uncle Aaron and cousin Jack were visiting from Jerusalem for Christmas. Kalie and Pinkie were so excited that they kept asking Mom when Daddy would be back from the airport. No sooner had she told them that the flight from Jerusalem had already landed, everyone arrived at the door. The kids were so excited! Uncle Aaron was apparently a very good story teller and Kalie asked if he’d tell one. Uncle Aaron was more than happy to comply. He began by telling Kalie, Pinkie and Jack that this particular story took place in a little town called Bethlehem which was approximately a half day’s walk south of Jerusalem. Shai and Adi lived in an Inn and pretty much every other inn was full because people were registering for the tax rolls. Adi was a bit miffed at Shai because he’d rented out their bedroom for the night when Adi thought they’d be sleeping on the kitchen floor instead. But, Shai was offered double the money for the bedroom so he just couldn’t refuse. He strolled outside to collect some extra blankets from the stable when he was approached by a man named, Jadon. He asked Shai if he had any room left in his inn for himself and his family. Shai told him he did as long as they didn’t mind sleeping on his kitchen floor. Jadon was more than happy to do that for it meant they’d have shelter from the coming storm. Suddenly, Adi was calling: “Shai! Shai!” and he knew he was in trouble for she had just discovered that he’d also rented out their kitchen floor as sleeping space. Adi demanded to know where they were supposed to sleep and when Adi answered: “the stable…” she was shocked to say the least. But, nonetheless Adi said she’d bring their dinner out to the stable. Uncle Aaron and the rest of the family enjoyed a nice dinner together and told the kids that he’d tell them more of the story every day until Christmas, but decided to tell them a bit more before bedtime. The storm was fierce with loud thunder and gusting winds. The noise woke Adi. She got up to fix a slamming shutter when she saw a man with a woman on a donkey standing outside the inn. Wrapped only in her robe she approached the couple. The man said his name was Joseph, and his wife, Mary was pregnant and feverish. Adi immediately ushered them with their donkey into the stable. Mary was burning up with a fever and about to give birth. After laying her down it wasn’t long until baby Jesus was born. What a miraculous night this had turned out to be! The following day Shai and Joseph were sitting outside sharing a bag of almonds. Shai was almost asleep when suddenly a bright light flashed through his closed eye lids. Right before him was a huge man wearing a brilliant white robe. The giant man told them his name was Uriel, an angel of the Lord. He told them that the baby Jesus was “the long promised savior of the Jews and the other people of the earth” and that He “must be raised in the ways of God so that He is prepared for His destiny. King Herod had heard of Jesus’s birth and was fearful that he would “usurp the crown of Israel from him and his heirs.” So, he had already ordered his soldiers to leave Jerusalem at sunset, march to Bethlehem and kill the baby Jesus that very night! They were warned that the soldiers would break through the doors of the inn at midnight so they therefore must run at sunset. What is going to happen now? What are Kalie and the other kids’ reaction to Uncle Aaron’s story? And where does Santa Claus enter into all this? Scott Roloff has penned a most beautiful Christmas story that every family should read together every year. For me the best way would be to read one chapter each day until Christmas just like Uncle Aaron did in the story as it helps the tension mount and gives the children lots to think about until the next installment. Thank you Mr. Roloff for writing a most precious story that can be shared again and again and again for generations to come. ...more |

She has been working as a laundress with her husband’s army unit, but when the army gets orders to march south to Tennessee, Gideon insists Heather go home to have their child under safer conditions. Heather agrees, but returns home to another kind of devastation – deaths in the family and a father who refuses to forgive her for marrying a Yankee. With nowhere else to turn, Heather seeks refuge at the Shaker Village of Harmony Hill, where her great aunt Sophrena lives. There, after many peaceful years at Harmony Hill, Sophrena is having doubts about her Shaker path. Both women are in need of love and forgiveness – whether given or received. With Christmas coming, can the miracle of a new life fill their hearts with unexpected joy? Ann H.Gabhart’s many fans will be thrilled to return to Harmony Hill at Christmastime for this stirring story of healing and hope. My Review: Heather Worth is a washerwoman for the men in the war. Following along with her husband, Gideon’s unit, she struggles day after day with the loads of trousers and coats that become filthy from crawling and laying on the ground. It is 1864 and the nation is torn apart by Civil war, but Heather’s choice to become a laundry woman allows her to stay by her beloved husband’s side. Soon Heather discovers she is pregnant and Gideon does not want his child being born on a battlefield so he sends Heather home to her mother so she can help birth her baby. After a long and arduous journey, the family farm comes into view. Sitting on the porch is her father who was not happy to see her and turned her away. He was an angry and embittered man. With nowhere else to turn, Heather ends up at Harmony Hill, a Shaker Village where her great aunt Sophrena is a sister. Heather doesn’t understand their strange beliefs or their strange ways, but they take her in and are kind to her. She longs for the peace she sees in this strange community, but can this longing really be fulfilled amid these people with their peculiar beliefs about family? As Christmas draws near, the joy of a new life and the love that is born of forgiveness may hold the answer. Christmas at Harmony Hill is a story of love, family, hope, and healing. I thoroughly enjoyed this novel and read it in one sitting, I just couldn’t put it down. “Book has been provided courtesy of Baker Publishing Group and Graf-Martin Communications, Inc. Story Description: Baker Publishing Group|September 15, 2013|Hardcover|ISBN: 978-0-8007-1965-4 Rachel Milligan is caring for her seven-year-old niece, H Story Description: Baker Publishing Group|September 15, 2013|Hardcover|ISBN: 978-0-8007-1965-4 Rachel Milligan is caring for her seven-year-old niece, Holly, at her home in Chicago when she receives devastating news: Holly’s parents have been killed in a plane crash. Because Rachel is Holly’s only known relative, she assumes that she will be her beloved niece’s guardian. However, custody is awarded to Lydia, a distant aunt who happens to be Amish. Just a week before Christmas, Rachel takes Holly to the Amish community in the hopes of persuading Aunt Lydia to relinquish custody. Instead, Lydia sets out to teach Holly to live according to the Amish way. As family secrets emerge and old wounds are healed, Rachel realizes that she will do whatever it takes to ensure that Holly has the loving family she needs. Combining an Amish family saga with the anticipation of Christmas cheer and the promise of a budding romance, this newest Christmas story from beloved author Melody Carlson is sure to please. My Review: Thirty-five-year-old, Rachel Milligan and her seven-year-old niece, Holly were spending time together in Chicago the week before Christmas. Holly’s parents, Michael and Miri were away on vacation and Aunt Rachel was babysitting. Rachel was Michael’s sister. Holly and Rachel went out and got a beautiful evergreen Christmas tree and lugged it home and up to the forty-ninth floor to the Milligan’s apartment. They strung coloured lights and spent the rest of the day making home-made Christmas decorations to adorn the tree. Satisfied with the job they’d done, they made hot chocolate and sat beneath the tree watching the coloured lights and singing the odd Christmas carol. It was getting late and it had been a long and busy day so Rachel got Holly off to bed. Holly was so happy she was almost glowing. With Holly fast asleep, Rachel sat in Michael’s favourite chair to relax and ponder over the days’ events. Suddenly the phone rang and Rachel hurried to pick up the receiver before the ringing could wake Holly. On the other end of the line was a voice she didn’t’ recognize but what she was told would change her and Holly’s life forever. And in less than a week, Rachel and Holly would find themselves driving from Chicago to Ohio to Amish country. A Simple Christmas Wish was a story full of love, redemption, and the true meaning of the holiday spirit. Although I felt very saddened for Rachel and young Holly, I also felt the change in the characters involved in the story as the realization of what was “right” settled upon them like a fresh blanket of snow. A Simple Christmas Wish would make a great family read around the Christmas tree over a couple of evenings. I loved it!! “Book has been provided courtesy of Baker Publishing Group and Graf-Martin Communications, Inc. Story Description: Baker Publishing Group|October 1, 2013|Trade Paperback|ISBN: 978-0-7642-0898-0 Bestselling Author Lynn Austin Launches New Biblical S Story Description: Baker Publishing Group|October 1, 2013|Trade Paperback|ISBN: 978-0-7642-0898-0 Bestselling Author Lynn Austin Launches New Biblical Saga After years of watching his children and grandchildren wander from their faith, Iddo’s prayers are answered. King Cyrus is allowing God’s chosen people to return to Jerusalem. Jubilant, he joyfully prepares for their departure, only to learn that his family, grown comfortable in the pagan culture of Babylon, wants to remain. Zechariah, Iddo’s oldest grandson, feels torn between his grandfather’s ancient beliefs and the comfort and success his father enjoys in Babylon. But he soon begins to hear the voice of God, encouraging him to return to the land given to his forefathers. Bringing to life the biblical books of Ezra and Nehemiah, Return to Me tells the compelling story of Iddo and Zechariah, the women who love them, and the faithful followers who struggle to rebuild their lives in obedience to the God who beckons them home. My Review: Eighty-two-year-old, Daniel was awoken in the middle of the night by loud pounding on his door. It was two of the King’s servants come to tell him he was wanted at the palace. King Beshazzar and the queen mother were summoning him to come immediately. When Daniel arrived at the palace banquet hall, a large gathering of people were enjoying food and wine. The King asked if Daniel was one of the exiles his forefathers had brought from Judah and Daniel confirmed that he was. The King said: “I am told the spirit of the gods is in you…they say you have insight, intelligence and outstanding wisdom.” The King pointed to the wall behind him and told Daniel that the fingers of a hand had appeared and wrote markings on the wall and he wanted Daniel to tell him what it said and what it meant. Daniel stepped closer to the wall and saw they were letters and words, writing of some sort. Daniel silently prayed for wisdom. This is what these words mean Daniel said: “You have been weighed on the scales and found wanting. Your kingdom is divided and given to the Medes and the Persians.” Daniel turned away from the writing readying himself to leave. Daniel went home realizing that God had made it clear tonight, that the kingdom of Babylon was finished, Belshazzer and his father, Nabonidas were doomed. What their downfall would mean for Daniel’s own life or for his people, he couldn’t guess. Ever since the Babylonians had taken him capture in Jerusalem as a young man, his life had been in God’s hands – the same hand that had written on the wall tonight. No matter what came next, Daniel rested safely in the grasp of his Sovereign God. Iddo and Dinah lived in Babylon. Iddo was suffering from dreams and woke gasping. The nightmare had almost devoured him. Dinah tried to soothe her husband resting her head on his chest as if she thought she could calm his pounding heart. But for, Iddo, they weren’t dreams, but instead visions that made no sense in the daylight hours. He relived memories, powerful memories, as real as on the day he’d lived them as a child. Iddo got up from his mat to make something warm to drink telling, Dinah to stay in bed and keep warm. During daytime hours he could control the visions he saw in his mind’s eye, but at night when darkness descended the visions and images pounced on him again. Once they pounced, they would reduce him to the ten-year-old boy he had been when Jerusalem fell – helpless, terrified, naked, and shivering before his enemies – Forty-seven years had passed since he’d lived through that, and Iddo spent those years in Babylon. He had his wife, Dinah, children and grandchildren, all born here. But the nightmare of Jerusalem never faded, never blurred. Iddo knew it wasn’t his sons fault that they didn’t believe because when they were young, Iddo’ own faith had been too weak to support their doubts and questions. But, Iddo felt he had a redeeming grace, he would teach his 11-year-old grandson, Zechariah to believe as perhaps then, God would hear their prayers and end His people’s exile from Jerusalem. Iddo asked Dinah if she was unhappy about maybe returning to Jerusalem someday. Dinah told, Iddo that she was born in Babylon and it was the only home she’d ever known. She said she never experienced what, Iddo had, what he did or known his grief – Dinah said she wished that Rebbe Daniel and the other prophets had never offered this hope of returning to Jerusalem to him saying that Babylon would fall and they would be free from exile to return from whence they came so long ago. She asked Iddo: “What if they’re wrong and this turns out to be another loss in your life?” Iddo replied: “They won’t be wrong.” Dinah feared that if his hopes were thwarted, the disappointment would kill him. Zechariah asked his Abba how seventy years of exile had already passed when Abba wasn’t even the age of seventy. Abba explained that their captivity began before he was born and that groups of their people were forced into exile three different times in a little more than twenty years. Abba didn’t remember the first two invasions, but when Judah’s King last rebelled against the Babylonians, their armies demolished everything and brought him there. Abba told Zechariah he was ten-years-old when the Babylonians broke through the walls and destroyed the temple, and now he and Zechariah would be among those blessed to return and rebuild it. Zechariah felt pulled in two directions – Babylon was his home, Jerusalem a distant place he knew only from the Torah. After their move back to Jerusalem, Dinah was very unhappy. She didn’t want to leave Babylon but because, Iddo was her husband, she had no choice but to go with him. Jerusalem had been so destroyed that there was nothing left but ruins and rubble. Rebuilding was going to take years but, Iddo was adamant that it would be done and they would accomplish their goals for God so He would be pleased with them. As the days wore on, Dinah became more and more despondent and she was truly beginning to hate, Iddo. They used to have such a close and happy marriage but now they barely talked. Dinah missed her other children and grandchildren who had chosen to stay back in Babylon. It bothered her that, Iddo never even so much as mentioned them nor even seemed to miss them at all. Iddo, knew, Dinah was unhappy and finally confronted her, asking why she was so unhappy and what he could do to help her feel more invested in what they were doing. Dinah told, Iddo that Babylon was where she truly wanted to be. Iddo responded with: “And so now you’re simply going through the motions without love in your heart?” Dinah told, Iddo there was nothing in her heart, that her heart was still in Babylon. She then turned the tables on Iddo and asked: “Why are you enduring hardship? Why do you want to perform all these rituals at the temple? Is it love or from duty? Is it merely to appease the Almighty One because you fear more punishment if you don’t?” Iddo, didn’t know what to say. Was it true that he served God only out of fear? Could he say that he loved God or that he believed God loved him? It is clear to me that, Iddo is confused and needs to sit and do some serious praying and soul searching. To give, Iddo more food for thought, Dinah said: “Why don’t you ask Zechariah the same questions? Why don’t you explain to him why you treated him so harshly after he was attacked?” Iddo’s only response was: “I was only doing what any father would do.” Dinah couldn’t believe what she was hearing and continued: “You believe that’s how God treats us. We have to follow all the rules, do everything exactly right, or He’ll punish our smallest misstep. And so you made the boy limp up the hill for prayers when he was in pain, and you humiliated him in front of all the others…” Dinah, here has certainly given, Iddo food for thought. But, I personally have known many people who believe exactly what Dinah has said to Iddo. They believe it’s true that we are meant to never make an error, to follow all the rules without making a mistake or we can expect a huge and severe punishment from God. After years of exile the Jewish people were finally allowed to return home to Jerusalem but it wasn’t without problems as we read through the story. They faced much turmoil and many hardships that shook even the most faithful of people. Return to Me is really the story of Iddo and his grandson, Zechariah who live by faith in the midst of doubt. Book One of Austin’s ‘Restoration Chronicles’ makes for some compelling reading and I can’t wait for Book Two. Excellent job, well-done!! Thank you both to Lynn Austin and Bethany House for the advanced copy. ...more |

Joining the communal society of the Amana Colonies isn’t what Jancey Rhoder planned for her future but when unforeseen circumstances force her family to make some difficult decisions, she chooses to give up her teaching position in a Kansas City orphanage and move with her parents to Iowa. Her besotted suitor, Nathan Woodwoard, isn’t at all happy about the move and is determined to get Jancey to change her mind. And Jancey herself isn’t sure what she’s gotten herself into when the simple life of the Amana Colonies means she’ll be assigned a job and may have to give up teaching for good. Will Nathan woo her back to the city, or will she be forever changed by the mysterious events and new relationships that await her in the quiet villages on the Amana Colonies – and decide to make this unique place her forever home? My Review: Jancey Rhoder was very happy with her volunteer job teaching the children; six boys and four girls, ranging in age from five to ten years. All the children loved Jancey as much as she loved them. All the children were orphans of the Kansas City Charity Home. During her off time, Jancey dated Nathan Woodward - he hoped to marry her one day in the near future. She still lived at home with her parents but her mother was very unwell and dying. Jancey helped her father with caring for her as best she could. One evening father said that he and mother needed to speak to Jancey about something and it sounded serious. He started off by saying that they’d already made a number of changes to the house in order to accommodate her mother’s declining health. The current sitting room had once been a guest bedroom, and they’d even moved the dining table to one end of the room in order to eat their meals together when Mother couldn’t navigate the stairs. At this point, Jancey was wondering what else her father could possibly say, then he dropped a bomb – they were moving to Iowa!!!! Jancey’s mother wanted to move back to the Amana Colonies where she had roots from years before. To say the least, Jancey was shocked – what did this mean for her? Will she stay in Kansas and continue to teach? Where would she live? How would she support herself? What about Nathan? Should she go to the Amana Colonies with her parents? What about her mother’s declining health, could father care for her on his own without her? Oh dear, Jancey had so, so many questions to answer but answer them she does. A Simple Change was a most interesting read. “Book has been provided courtesy of Baker Publishing Group and Graf-Martin Communications, Inc. Deter Story Description: Baker Publishing Group|August 1, 2013|Trade Paperback|ISBN: 978-0-8007-2093-3 Rose Schrock is a plain woman with a simple plan. Determined to find a way to support her family and pay off her late husband’s debts she sets to work to convert the basement of her Amish farmhouse into an inn. While her family, especially her cranky mother-in-law, is unhappy with Rose’s big idea, her friend and neighbor, Galen King, supports the decision and he helps with the conversion. As Rose finalizes preparations for visitors, she prays. She asks God to bless each guest who stays at the Inn at Eagle Hill. As the first guest arrives and settles in, Rose is surprised to discover that her entire family is the one who receives the blessings, in the most unexpected ways. And she’s even more surprised when that guest decides to play matchmaker for Galen King. With her signature plot twists combined with gentle Amish romance, bestselling author Suzanne Woods Fisher invites readers back to Stoney Ridge for fresh stories of simple pleasures despite the complexity of life. Fisher’s tale of God’s providence and provision will delight her fans and create many new ones. Welcome to the Inn at Eagle Hill. My Review: Rose Schrock walked along the creek bordering the Pennsylvania farm and climbed the hill. It was February and she wore her husband’s huge old coat. Her golden retriever, Chase, trotted along behind her. When Rose reached the top of the hill, she sat back against a tree and surveyed the peaceful, lovely, and calm farm below. Rose had been raised not to complain, so she didn’t but so many things had gone wrong over the past little while that she was having a hard time dealing with everything. Her mother-in-law, Vera told Rose: “you can’t expect mercy” and she didn’t, she just wished things would happen slower or one at a time so she could deal with them. She needed to get back down the hill to wake her kids. Her boys were very hard to wake up but her girls would already be up. They were very helpful to Rose doing whatever chores needed to be done without complaint. But before she left the hill she had a prayer to say. She told God she was tired out, that she had four fatherless children – five actually if she knew where the oldest boy had run off two – an addle-minded mother-in-law and barely thirty-six dollars left in her bank account, and that she was fresh out of backbone and fight. She asked God for a Plan B. Rose reflected on how things could change so drastically. She used to have so many plans, she had enough money and seven months ago she had a husband, but now Dean was gone too. Thirteen-year-old, Miriam used to like visiting her grandmother’s farm, it had seemed like an adventure to adapt to the lifestyle of the Old Order Amish. But living someplace was different than visiting and, Miriam felt she came from a different world. She was raised in a Mennonite church in a large town in Pennsylvania – where her family had electricity and drove a car. Here, it was quiet. No electricity, no car, not even normal lights – just a kerosene lantern hanging from the ceiling, which hissed and gave off a flat white light. It was all different, and all new to her. Eight-year-old, Sammy was a curious and nosy little boy. He was small and stocky and always told the truth. Sammy was Miriam’s favourite brother although she would never tell anyone that. Her ten-year-old brother, Luke had his good points. He was funny, smart and a bottomless pit of good ideas to do on a Sunday afternoon, but he had a sneaky side to him, like Tobe, the oldest in the family. Delia Stoltz was married to Dr. Charles Stoltz, a prominent neurosurgeon, their only child was in his last year of vet school at Cornell and wanted for nothing. Delia was running late for her doctor’s appointment but when she arrived she could tell that something was bothering Dr. Zimmerman. When she sat down in his office, he told her: “you have cancer.” The biopsy on the breast tissue he’d done had come back positive. She doesn’t even remember driving home. When she arrived, Charles was standing there with his bags packed, she must have forgotten he had a business trip until he spouted: “I’ve fallen in love with someone else, I’m sorry, honey. I’m moving out.” Delia didn’t even have time to tell him she had cancer – Charles was gone and out the door. Rose was in the grocery store when she overheard a tourist couple commenting that there was no where to stay in town. No hotels and no bed and breakfasts. It suddenly dawned on Rose that she had her Plan B!! The basement of the farmhouse was finished off with drywall and had an exterior entrance. She could cook breakfast for guests and make some money on the side. It wouldn’t bring in enough money to totally support the family but it sure would help. Delia Stoltz was at home waiting for a call from the doctor’s office to hear the results from yesterday’s lumpectomy, waiting to hear if the margins were clear. The phone rang but it wasn’t the doctor, it was Robyn Dixon, the daughter of the Charles’s attorney – Charles was filing for a legal separation and Delia was asked to be at a meeting tomorrow at two o’clock. The following day, Delia was on her way to the lawyer’s office for the meeting when she stopped for gas. She couldn’t get the hose into the car properly and broke down in tears. A kindly woman approached to assist her. Delia apologized to the woman and swallowed back her tears saying: “I’m sorry. I’ve just had too much on my plate lately.” The woman said she understood completely and told her that she and her husband often headed to Amish Country to breathe in some fresh air and relax. The woman told Delia about Rose’s place. Delia decided right then and there that’s where she was going after seeing Charles kiss Robyn Dixon in the parking lot of the lawyer’s office. Delia, Rose and the whole family are going to get a lot more out of Delia’s visit than they bargained for – learning that you need forgiveness, love, faith, and redemption. This was a beautiful story of love and unexpected things. You’ll love the atmosphere at the Inn at Eagle Hill. “Book has been provided courtesy of Baker Publishing Group and Graf-Martin Communications, Inc. Story Description: Baker Publishing Group|March 1, 2013|Trade Paperback|ISBN: 978-0-8007-2169-5 Hosea has been charged by God with a difficult task – ma Story Description: Baker Publishing Group|March 1, 2013|Trade Paperback|ISBN: 978-0-8007-2169-5 Hosea has been charged by God with a difficult task – marry a prostitute in order to show God’s people that nature and depth of his love for Israel. When Hosea goes to Israel to proclaim God’s message, the prostitute God tells him to marry turns out to be his childhood friend, Gomer. He finds her broken and abused, unwilling to trust Hosea or his God. But when marrying Hosea becomes her only choice, Gomer does what she’s good at – she survives. Can Hosea’s love for God and God’s love for Israel heal Gomer’ broken spirit? With her potent combination of in-depth research and masterful storytelling, Mesu Andrews brings to life a complex and fascinating biblical story of the power of love and forgiveness in the face of utter betrayal. My Review: Mesu Andrews has written the most fascinating bible story yet. It is glaringly obvious the amount of research that went into this particular story. When Hosea is commanded by God to marry a prostitute to prove his love for Israel, little does Hosea know that the very prostitute he wants him to marry is none other than his childhood friend, Gomer. Gomer has been terribly used and abused and trusts no one. Hosea practically commands her to marry him which she eventually does. Although, Gomer has always been a survivor, she also can’t help but repeat her past, the only life she’s ever know – that of being a prostitute. During their long marriage she prostitutes herself time and time again but, Hosea takes her back each time. She also doesn’t believe in Hosea’s God, another lesson he must teach her. He ends up raising their children on his own with help of neighbours and eventually leaves their village to go in search of her again. It has been years since the children have seen her and they miss their mother terribly and want her to come home. Does Hosea find, Gomer? Will she return home? What does she have to do to prove to God that she has learned her lesson this time and gets it that He loves her and He is the only God? You’ll be riveted to your seat until you’ve turned the last page. This was one of the most interesting bible stories I’ve read in a while. Thank you, Mesu. I also like to say thank you to Graf-Martin for sending me a copy of this book. ...more |

In the autumn of 1941, rumors of war whisper through Rosey Corner. The town practically vibrates with apprehension, as if it is holding its breath. But for Kate Merritt, it seems life is letting out a prolonged sigh. As Kate watches her sister marry the man Kate has loved since she was fifteen, her heart is silently breaking. And even the attentions of Jay Tanner, the handsome best man, can’t draw her interest. Then suddenly, Pearl Harbor changes everything and Kate finds herself drawn to Jay in surprising ways. Could she truly be in love with him? And if he enlists, will she ever see him again? In her gentle and textured style, Ann H. Gabhart tells a timeless story of love, sacrifice and longing that will grip your heart and stir your spirit. Fans of Gabhart’s Angel Sister will love seeing Kate Merritt all grown-up, as well as other characters they have come to love. My Review: This was a beautiful story. I felt so sorry for Jay Tanner. He had no family and felt like such a worthless human being. He had come to Rosey Corner to be best man at his friend, Mike’s wedding. Mike was a preacher and for a long time tried to get Jay interested in hearing God’s word and attending church but he hadn’t been very successful. Kate Merritt had loved Mike since she was a young girl but today she would stand and watch her sister, Evie marry the man she always dreamed of marrying. At the time, Kate was dating Carl but he didn’t love him although he loved her dearly and wanted to marry her. Most people referred to him as the “hayseed.” Jay Tanner took an immediate liking to Kate and soon they were dating but when an accident occurred that left Jay smelling like a distillery, Kate thought he been drinking and was drunk when in fact he wasn’t. After going through years of her own father’s drinking she wasn’t prepared to date or marry a man who a drinker and slammed the door in Jay’s face before giving him a chance to explain. She walked away from the relationship leaving poor Jay feeling even more worthless as a human being and believing he could never do anything right. Then the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and the war was on. Jay left Rosey Corner without saying good-bye to anyone as he felt he had no one left to say good-bye too and enlisted in the army. Now he was stationed in Georgia training as a paratrooper. Kate was still at home in Rosey Corner feeling sad and lonely and missing Jay very much. She kept questioning herself but not giving Jay a chance to explain himself the night he was drunk. After many discussions with her sisters, her Mom and her Dad, she decided to drive three states away and surprise Jay with a visit, hoping beyond hope that he would forgive her and allow them to start over. Does she even find Jay when she arrives or has his ship already sailed? When she finally does locate him, will he take her back or is he too disgusted and feeling too worthless to take a second chance? Small Town Girl was a wonderful story and my heart just bled for Jay. I wanted to wrap my arms around the poor guy and tell him that I cared about him and would write to him when he went into the army. Ann H. Story Description: Baker Publishing Group|June 1, 2013|Trade Paperback|ISBN: 978-0-7642-0620-7 Emmalyne Knox and Tavin McLachlan were destined to be tog Story Description: Baker Publishing Group|June 1, 2013|Trade Paperback|ISBN: 978-0-7642-0620-7 Emmalyne Knox and Tavin McLachlan were destined to be together…until the tragic deaths of Emmalyne’s youngest sisters. Family tradition mandates that the youngest daughter should remain single to care for her parents in their old age, and now that daughter is Emmalyne. Her father unyielding, Emmalyne surrenders to her duty, heartbroken. Tavin leaves town, equally devastated. Years later, Emmalyne’s family moves, and she and Tavin meet again. Their feelings for each other are as strong as ever, but their painful past and Emmalyne’s father still stand between them. Soon both families are in the midst of the growing conflict rising between the workers at the granite quarry that Tavin’s father owns and operates. When a series of near-fatal accidents occur, Tavin must figure out who is behind the attacks before someone gets killed. Bound by obligation, yet yearning for a future together, can Emmalyne and Tavin dare to dream that God could heal a decade-long wound and change the hearts of those who would stand in the way of true love? My Review: It is April of 1886 and, Emmalyne Knox, seventeen-years-old and engaged to marry Tavin MacLachlan in just two months stood at the side of the two graves. Her two younger sisters, Doreen aged fourteen and, Lorna aged ten had been killed in a tornado. Along with the loss of her two sisters, was the loss of their family home. The house was now nothing but a pile of wood. Her mother, Rowena and father, Luthias shook hands with other mourners who had come to pay their respects. Her father’s anger was evident to everyone present. Emmalyne’s younger brother, Angus just barely twelve-years-old stood with his family not knowing what to do. Luthias was a harsh and angry man and Emmalyne had grown up fearing him. She had never witnessed or received gentleness or kindness from her father, and she seriously doubted he was capable of either. The MacLachlan family had been gracious enough to allow the Knox family to stay with them after the tornado. After all, they were just about family anyway with Emmalyne and Tavin getting married. Everyone was returning to their carriages as the grave diggers began throwing dirt atop the small caskets they had just lowered into the ground. Tavin spoke up to say he was going to walk Emmalyne back to his house when her father, Luthias interrupted and told him: “No, you won’t be doin that.” He then proclaimed: “We’re movin to Minneapolis.” Mrs. MacLaclan piped right up away and responded: “But surely nae until after the wedding…tis but a few weeks away.” Luthias replied: “There will be no weddin.” Emmalyne was stunned and Tavin asked: “What are you saying sir?” Luthias said: “I’m sayin the weddin is off. Emmalyne has a responsibility to her own family. With her younger sisters dead and her older sisters married, it falls to her to remain and care for her mother and me.” Emmalyne had forgotten all about the TRADITION! With her two youngest sisters dead, that now made HER the youngest daughter, and in the Knox family lineage that made her responsible to give up a life of her own to care for her aging parents. It had been done that way for generations. So, there definitely would be no wedding. Emmalyne fought back tears and nausea as everything she planned fell to pieces in front of her. The tornado had not only taken the lives of her sisters and destroyed their home; it had cost Emmalyne her future. Tavin tried to convince Emmalyne to elope that very night before her family left for Minneapolis in the morning, but Emmalyne said she just couldn’t go against her father’s word or the word of God. Tavin was upset and angry and told her: “Your days will be long…and no doubt very lonely” and he stormed out of the room without another word. Emmalyne cried and didn’t know what was worse, her father’s anger, God’s judgment, or Tavin’s wrath and disappointment. Somewhere in the middle of all this were the shattered remains of her heart. It would be eleven years, in 1897 before Emmalyne would see Tavin again. She was now twenty-eight-years-old yet her broken heart had never really healed, no matter the amount of time she spent in prayer or reading God’s word. Misery and suffering were her only companions. Will Emmalyne and Tavin pick up where they left off, or has Tavin already moved on and married? The Quarryman’s Daughter was a beautiful love story and showed the power of prayer and if we put our faith in God, together we can move mountains. I would like to thank Baker House Publishing for sending me a copy of this book. The opinions expressed above are purely my own and I received no remuneration for my review. ...more |

Story Description: Baker Publishing Group|May 1, 2013|Trade Paperback|ISBN: 978-0-7642-0975-8 When Meg Cole’s father dies unexpectedly, she becomes the Story Description: Baker Publishing Group|May 1, 2013|Trade Paperback|ISBN: 978-0-7642-0975-8 When Meg Cole’s father dies unexpectedly, she becomes the majority shareholder of his oil company and the single inheritor of his fortune. Though Meg is soft-spoken and tender-hearted – more interested in art than in oil – she’s forced to return home to Texas and to Whispering Creek Ranch to take up the reins of her father’s empire. The last thing she has the patience or the sanity to deal with? Her father’s thoroughbred racehorse farm. She gives its manager, Bo Porter six months to close the place down. Bo’s determined to resent the woman who’s decided to rob him of his dream. But instead of anger, Meg evokes within him a profound desire to protect. The more time he spends with her, the more he longs to overcome every obstacle that separates them – her wealth, his unworthiness, her family’s outrage – and earn the right to love her. But just when Meg begins to realize that Bo might be the one thing on the ranch worth keeping, their fragile bond is viciously broken by a force from Meg’s past. Can their love – and their belief that God can work through every circumstance – survive? My Review: William Cole was an oil man and very rich but unfortunately he was now dead. His daughter Meg always said he was a lousy father but very good at being rich. Now that he was gone it was up to Meg to step forward and pick up the reins of the business but Meg had different plans. Being home at Whispering Creek Ranch is not where Meg wanted to be. She’s just spent two weeks with Cole Oil Advisors undergoing a crash course on the family holdings. They also counselled her on Whispering Creek Ranch which included the family home and her father’s horse farm. The advisors urged her to release the Whispering Creek employees who had fit into her father’s life-style but couldn’t possibly fit into her own. As a result, Meg had already fired three people this morning and she fired her father’s chauffer – she didn’t need one. Next on her list was to fire Mr. Bo Porter who ran the thoroughbred horse farm. Mr. Porter arrived at her office and Meg was nervous and full of anxiety. When he walked into her office he was a lot younger than she though he’d be. Looking at him, Meg pegged him at around thirty to thirty-three. She also noticed he was very handsome. Meg said that she regretted to tell him that she was closing down the horse farm and offered him a severance package worth ‘triple’ what normally one would receive. Bo wasn’t interested in looking at the severance package and informed Meg that he had twenty employees working for him. Meg made it clear that all employees were to receive the same severance package in order to ensure people had ample time to find new jobs. Meg then told Bo they were to sell her father’s ninety horses. A few minutes later, Bo walked back into Meg’s office and said he couldn’t do it – sell the horses. He told her if he had six more months, then he could break even rather than losing money. Meg wasn’t happy but her resolve was slipping fast and before she knew it she told him, yes he could have six months but no more. Bo had one more request that Meg come out and see the horse farm for herself. Although she hated horses she agreed. Giving up the horse farm was going to be very difficult for Bo. As farm manager he got paid well and he put in twelve hour days, woke at the crack of dawn, and thought about horses 24/7 because it was his dream job. Bo was thinking about Meg Cole. When he’d heard people gossiping about her, he’d pictured her as a “Paris Hilton type of person.” She did look rich and she must have spent two hours getting ready that morning. Her make-up could have come straight out of a magazine ad. As much as Meg looked the part, there had been something about her that had struck him as strange for a rich girl, something he’d sensed more than seen. Beneath her appearance he detected an uncertainty, a vulnerability about her. This was bad news for him because he was a sucker for vulnerability and it made him want to protect her. Bo thought this was laughable since she was the one with all the money and power. She was the one firing him from his job. And yet he stood there in the mansion’s office, fighting the urge to help and comfort her. Bo had asked Meg to visit the ranch because he had a small hope that she might soften if she could see the place for herself, meet the staff and spend time with the horses. Over the new few months he could take her out on rides, escort her to the owner’s box at the track for races, explain to her why her father had liked it so much, and show her the farm’s earning projections over the next decade. For the sake of the people who worked at the farm, he had to try. Meg was under so much stress and was feeling anxious. Her Uncle Michael had arrived who was her father’s youngest brother. He’d just spent thirty minutes explaining an oil and gas exploration deal that Cole Oil was in the middle of negotiating. Michael told Meg not to worry that he was going to look out for her and her best interests, no matter what. But an iron grew around Meg’s chest, and her pulse quickened. She needed to escape. Quickly, she made her excuses and let herself out. The day arrived for Meg to visit the horse farm. She was dreading it. When she arrived, Bo had all of his employees lined up to meet her. She took the time to shake each person’s hand and say a few words to them. Bo then began his tour of the stables and the horses telling Meg little stories about each one. When they were done, Meg realized that her anxiety was gone “like a wisp of smoke.” Her stomach was easy, her nerves steady, and her heartbeat and respiration were normal. Astonished, she moved her gaze to Bo. HE had done this, she realized. Bo Porter had stilled the roiling inside her. She couldn’t believe it. What therapy, antacids, breathing techniques, and hours of self-talk had not been able to do for her, HE’D done. This person she scarcely knew. She just wanted to stand next to him and gratefully drink in the calm. Soon both Meg and Bo were having deep feelings for each other but they kept their thoughts to themselves. Meg is thinking that she could never have a relationship with an employee of hers and Bo is thinking Meg would believe he was just after her money. Finally, Meg decides she can no longer hide how she really feels but something terrible happens. Can their relationship – and their belief in God work through every circumstance and will they both survive? Undeniably Yours was an utterly delicious and beautiful read. The characters were so well drawn out that I felt I knew each of them personally and could draw a picture in my mind of what each of them looked like. I will definitely be recommending this scrumptious novel to everyone and plan on reading this one a second time. “Book has been provided courtesy of Baker Publishing Group and Graf-Martin Communications, Inc. Story Description: Baker Publishing Group|May 1, 2013|Trade Paperback|ISBN: 978-0-7642-1046-4 When Eve Marryat’s father is laid off from the Ford Motor Story Description: Baker Publishing Group|May 1, 2013|Trade Paperback|ISBN: 978-0-7642-1046-4 When Eve Marryat’s father is laid off from the Ford Motor Company in 1931, he is forced to support his family by leaving St. Paul, Minnesota, and moving back to his Ohio roots. Eve’s uncle Cyrus has invited the family to live and work at his Marryat Island Ballroom and Lodge. St. Paul seemed like a haven for gangsters, and Eve had grown fearful of living there. At seventeen, she considers her family to be “good people.” They aren’t lawbreakers and criminals like so many people in her old neighborhood. Thrilled to be moving to a “safe haven”, Eve is blissfully unaware that her Uncle’s lodge is a transfer station for illegal liquor smuggled from Canada. Eve settles in to work and makes new friends, including an enigmatic but affecting young man. But when the reality of her situation finally becomes clear, Eve is faced with a dilemma. How can she ignore what is happening right under their very noses? Yet can she risk everything by condemning the man whose love and generosity is keeping her and her family from ruin? My Review: Seventeen-year-old Eve Marryat left St. Paul, Minnesota on May 30, 1931 with her family. They were moving to Mercy, Ohio to live with her Uncle Cyrus. Her father was laid off from the Ford Motor Company and Uncle Cyrus had offered him a job at his Marryat Island Ballroom and Lodge. After a three day drive they arrived at the lodge. Uncle Cy’s wife, Cora, wasn’t there as she as convalescing in a tuberculosis sanitarium. This would also be the first time Eve’s father and his brother, Cy have seen each other in a number of years. They had had some type of argument back then but Eve didn’t know what it was about. Cassandra Marryat was Eve’s sister who was now twenty-five-years-old but she didn’t make the move with the family. She was married now and her home was back in St. Paul. Cassandra and Eve were not close as a lot of sisters are. Eve saw Cassandra as “silly and shallow”, a party girl tailor-made for the twenties. The years were to prove her right when Cassandra ended up pregnant without a husband, and wasn’t even sure who the father was. Too excited to sleep on her first night at the lodge, Eve wanders down the stairs and into the ballroom. She sees a record player and begins dancing and twirling until she stumbles and falls down. She backed into someone or something but couldn’t imagine what. Suddenly a hand extended into her vision. When she looked up, she fell back and stifled a scream. They guy withdrew his hand and said: “All right then…you can just get yourself up.” Eve knew what he was but had never seen one before – he was an albino. He had pale skin, stark white hair and two crimson eyes that glowed like rubies. Eve asked his name and he said it was, Jones which was his mother’s maiden name. It suddenly dawned on Eve that he was Cora’s son. When she asked Jones if Cora was his mother he responded yes. Eve asked why he wasn’t at Uncle Cy and Cora’s wedding and Jones said he had pneumonia so had to stay in Chicago with other relatives. Eve asked him why she had never heard about him before considering he’d lived there five years now and Uncle Cy have never told them either. Jones’s only response was: “It’s no secret, just because you don’t mention someone.” Eve was speechless, then felt bad at the way she acted and offered to start over. She reintroduced herself, told Jones it was nice to meet him but his features stiffened into a sneer, took one step back and said: “Yeah, I bet.” With that he turned and walked away. Eve was sitting in a rowboat one morning thinking when Jones appeared on the dock. He wanted to go out rowing in the boat Eve was sitting in. She was about to climb out when Jones told her she didn’t have to, but “just move up to the front seat” he said. Jones began to row and Eve watched the water dripping off the oars as they came up from the water. A couple of boats passed them carrying boxes marked “castor oil”. Eve asked Jones where the men would be going with castor oil and he began to laugh and shake his head. Jones informed her it was “moonshine!” Eve was astounded and started into a speech about Prohibition and how moonshine was illegal. Jones saw it as a way for the men to feed their families and told Eve there were a lot of people around the area that made moonshine. Later that evening, back in her room, Eve suddenly realized she didn’t feel safe and secure anymore. She was so happy to leave St. Paul where there were a lot of robberies, shootings, and stabbings. Eve and her family actually witnessed a man being shot which Eve still dreams about. She thought she’d feel so very safe at Marryat Lodge and was so elated to be there but this whole moonshine business burst her bubble of happiness and security. One day a man about twenty showed up at the lodge for a meal. He was basically homeless and lived in a shantytown up the river near the railroad. Uncle Cy was a kind man, he fed anyone who showed up looking for food. He never turned anyone away. When Annie, the cook, had the plate of stew with some bread and lemonade ready, Eve took it out to the man. He told her his name was Link. Soon, Eve would have more to do with Link that she thought. Right now she views him as nothing more than a bum. The whole idea of bootlegging is still very present in Eve’s mind and she wants absolutely nothing to do with it. However, it is much closer to her than she could ever have imagined and makes her lose faith in everything she believed. How is Eve possibly going to handle the devastating secret that is about to be exposed? The stunning conclusion to this story will knock your socks off and make your heart race. It was unbelievably well-done! Ann Tatlock has written a masterpiece in Sweet Mercy and I would highly recommend this book to everyone. Great writing! Story Description: Baker Publishing Group|May 1, 2013|Trade Paperback|ISBN: 978-0-8007-2181-7 Hannah Gregory is good at many things, but that list doesn Story Description: Baker Publishing Group|May 1, 2013|Trade Paperback|ISBN: 978-0-8007-2181-7 Hannah Gregory is good at many things, but that list doesn’t include following rules. So when she is forced to apply for a job as a telephone switchboard operator to support her two sisters, she knows it won’t be easy. “Hello Girls” must conduct themselves according to strict – and often bewildering rules. No talking to the other girls. No chatting with callers. No blowing your nose without first raising your hand. And absolutely no consorting with gentlemen while in training. Meanwhile, young lawyer Lincoln Cole finds himself in the unfortunate position of having to enforce the bank’s eviction of the three Gregory girls from their parent’s home. He tries to soften the blow by supporting them in small ways as they settle into another home. But fiery Hannah refuses his overtures and insists on paying back every cent of his charity. When one of Hannah’s friends finds himself on the wrong side of a jail cell, Hannah is forced to look to Lincoln for help. Will it be her chance to return to her dreams of studying law? And could she be falling in love? With historic details that bring to life the exciting first decade of the twentieth century, Lorna Seilstad weaves a charming tale of camaraderie and companionship that blossoms into love. Readers will get lost in this sweet romance and will eagerly look forward to championing each sister’s dreams. My Review: Twenty-year-old Hannah Gregory lost both of her parents from influenza and was left to care for her two sisters: Charlotte and Tessa. Money was tight and if she didn’t find a job soon the three of them would starve. Three months ago, Hannah was attending Drake University studying law, but with the death of her parents and the little money her parents left wouldn’t allow her to continue paying her education and supporting her sisters and herself. While sitting and eating dinner a knock came at the door. Hannah got up to answer it and it was man named Lincoln Cole who was there representing Iowa Bank and Trust. Unfortunately, he had come with some very bad news. Apparently her father had taken out a second mortgage on their farm and he owed the bank a large sum of money. And, in the three months since their parent’s deaths, Hannah had been unable to make any payments at all. Mr. Cole informed Hannah that the bank was foreclosing on the property but said they could take dishes, their beds, dressers and other personal items but the rest would go to auction. Hannah was very worried. How was she going to move, find a new home and start over all on her own? Hannah had seen an ad in the grocery store for a telephone operator. They called them “Hello Girls”. Hannah went for a job interview and was hired and would begin training on Monday. The nice thing was that it was a “paid” training and the three girls sure could use the money. She would earn five dollars a week during training and eight when she became a full-fledged operator. While at the interview, Hannah met another girl, Rosie Murphy who was also hired on as a Hello Girl. At the end of their day, Rosie invited Hannah to her house for tea and snacks and to meet her mother. During their walk, Hannah told Rosie about her parents passing and that the bank now owned their home so she and her sisters needed to find someplace to live. Rosie told Hannah that she could probably help. After being seated at the Murphy’s table with a plate of egg salad sandwiches and ginger cookies, Mrs. Murphy told Hannah that she had a cottage she and her sisters could rent. This was wonderful news for Hannah. And, Mrs. Murphy said she wouldn’t accept: “…a cent until you’re a bona fide operator.” Hannah was excited beyond belief for she had found a job and a small house to rent. Someone in their small town began setting fires and no one could figure out who was responsible. Within a couple of days, Walt, Hannah’s best and long-time friend had been arrested and thrown in jail. Hannah knew deep in her heart that Walt was innocent and she needed to help him. Lincoln Cole was a lawyer and had helped Hannah and her sisters move to their new home. He had felt so bad about being the one to tell her the bank was foreclosing on their home that he felt it was the least he could do. Plus, Lincoln was quite smitten with Hannah. Hannah thought over her options about how to help Walt and approached Lincoln to ask him if he’d defend Walt. Lincoln not only said yes, but he said he’d do it pro bono – for free! It didn’t take long before Hannah realized that Lincoln had much more than just a passing interest in her. And, Walt also felt the same way about Hannah. Who is the real arsonist? And, who will win Hannah’s heart? When Love Calls was a smart, sassy, funny, and addictive read. I couldn’t put this book down. Each page turned made me want to read more and more. A huge thumbs up for When Love Calls! "Book has been provided courtesy of Baker Publishing Group and Graf-Martin Communications, Inc. Trouble is…love’s looking to take care of them both. Cassidy McClare is a spunky Texas oil heiress without a fortune who would just as soon hogtie a man as look at him. Jilted by a fortune hunter, Cassidy travels west hoping a summer visit with her wealthy cousins in San Francisco will help her forget her heartache. But no sooner is she settled in beautiful California than Jamie McKenna, a handsome pauper looking to marry well, captures her heart. Can love prevail when Jamie discovers that Cassidy is poorer than he is? And can Cassidy ever learn to fully trust her heart to a man? My Review: Cassidy McClare travels to San Francisco to spend the summer with her wealthy cousins. She has broken up with her boyfriend and needs the time to heal her broken heart. Once in San Francisco she runs into the handsomest man named, Jamie McKenna but Cassidy can’t allow herself to trust him because he is gorgeous and she already knows how dangerous good-looking men can be. Jamie, on the other hand, has already made up his mind to marry, Cassidy. He thinks that she is loaded with money and he needs a rich wife to help him pay for the surgery for his crippled sister. Jamie blames himself for his sister’s condition so he just has to find a way to help her. This was a great read and I loved being able to dissect, Jamie as he had so many emotional layers to his personality. The characters in this story were well fleshed out. I will definitely recommend Love At Any Cost and give it a huge thumbs-up! "Book has been provided courtesy of Baker Publishing Group and Graf-Martin Communications, Inc. But a constant threat comes from Nicky’s drug-addicted father, who wants the boy and seems willing to do whatever it takes to get him. Dr. Micah Hatcher serves the immigrant population in Queens, but under cover of darkness he provides another service that must not be discovered lest his and his brother’s lives be in danger. When Lydia and Micah’s paths cross, they are suddenly wrapped up in each other’s callings. Through unforeseen twists and turns, they seek a refuge of safety – for Nicky, for themselves, and for the needy people God unexpectedly puts in their lives. My Review: I absolutely fell in love with this story. Lydia Eldredge and her young son, Nicky deserved to live a good life. She lived with her parents but her father was a very brusque man. He wasn’t a happy man or at peace with himself inside until he got to know Dr. Micah Hatcher, that is. Lydia and Nicky are under an ongoing threat from Nicky’s father, Nic, who is a severe drug addict. He had an ulterior motive for wanting little Nicky, not because he wanted full-time custody and to be a good father to the boy. When Lydia travels she meets a physician named Micah Hatcher who is a truly wonderful man. He has such a good heart and helps his brother, a minister, with an important mission from Russia. Little do Lydia and Micah know that their meeting is going to change both their lives forever, but what happens to, Nic and little Nicky will surprise you. Kim Vogel Sawyer’s Sweet Sanctuary is truly “sweet” and I’m keeping this one as part of my permanent collection.
