I am hopeful that since it is the first book of a new series that it is just a matter of building the characters and the world that it is set in. This is a spin-off series and that may have been why I was expecting more. I am not sure how she does it, but she manages to suck you into the world she has created in her books. You are there and everything is so vivid and real. Ms. Kagawa is a true and fabulously talented storyteller -- not just an author -- and there is a difference. She has talent that is not often seen in authors. Her ability to create worlds so unlike our own -- yet so real -- is a gift beyond measure, and I am thankful that such talent exists. Julie Kagawa is so exceptionally talented. I can't really even put it into words.
The Immortal Rules, the first book in a new series called "Blood of Eden" was an excellent read. I read it in one sitting. At times I laughed and at times I cried. So many emotions from one book. One AMAZING book.
The only reason I did not give this book five stars is that it started out a bit slow. I know it is VERY difficult to create a "world" in a new series and not have it be a bit repetitive and and sometimes long-winded (and thus boring). Actually, I am not sure that many authors are able to do it -- probably only a handful. Karen Moning did an excellent job in her world building in the first Fever book -- but than again that world was not so different from our own. Julie Kagawa creates worlds that you couldn't have thought of on your own -- her imagination is so vivid and unconstrained that it is frankly a bit scary. Similar in a way to Stephen King... you wonder how the heck she can come up with these ideas. Ms. Kagawa did a VERY good job at the world building in The Immortal Rules, but not an exceptional job. A times I was a bit bored and wanted the action/story to start. She did succeed in setting up a world that will easily carry on into the next book(s) in the series. I imagine she can get quite a few books out of this "world," and keep the series a bit longer than some of her others.
