Idiot h goes to a galactic prison disguised as a boy to rescue her brother.
According to my records, I've read over 45 of this author's bks, altho I haven't read her in over a year and she turns out like 4-6 bks a yr. I can't believe that I had forgotten how annoying and TSTL most of her heroines were. This one might be the most TSTL yet. She went into a prison and got into non-stop trouble the second she stepped foot into that place because of her snarky big mouth. She could not STFU and then she would cry and tremble bc she was about to get raped and killed every minute. Jeez.
Usually, I can overlook the annoying h for the hotness but I didn't find the sex scenes sexy since I lot of it was public and the "I have to give you an alien anal probe to protect you" type. Not my jam.
Content warnings: lots of violence, gore, mutilations, killings, rape, attempted gang rape

25 yr old Australian PR grunt meets NFL quarterback. Debut novel by Aussie author against an American football backdrop. (More on THAT later)
It was just ok. I read worse sports romances and I read better. The H was appealing and had to do a lot of chasing. It was the h that was the problem. She blew hot-n-cold too often thruout. I can see lots of readers finding her annoying or unlikable. I certainly thought so.
As for the fact that an Aussie author is writing about American football: you should stick with what you know or get a better football advisor. There were a few mistakes that jarred me from the story and made it obvious that the author did not know the NFL. Here's some:
Fact - Quarterbacks would never have a high uniform number like 42. It is a RB or defensive back number. There is a system to the numbers that can easily be googled here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nationa...
Fact - You don't get a Super Bowl ring on the day (or even a month near) you win a SB. It takes MONTHS to design and make those rings. They are usually presented the next season....more

I first read this over 20 yrs ago and have been putting off this re-read for a very, very long time. I would have put this off forever but I recently read a new NA that was obviously a nod to Jude and the trope that she popularized, if not invented, in this bk. The "if you are an identical twin, you marry the One who can tell you apart from your twin" trope. Yay, Jude! You may be batshitcray but your legacy lingers on. :-)
Anyhoo, back to the bk . . . . I used to be a big Jude fan (before the BSC, obviously) and of the about 25 JD bks I read, Sweet Liar was the only one I had little recollection of, other than it's set in NYC and had LOTS of shopping. It took about 70 pages to get into the story and yeah, the reasons why it didn't work much for me are still the same.
Sweet Liar was originally a HC release and back in 1992, it was generally understood that you can't release a pure romance bk in HC. So, SL is half romance and half mystery with the mystery taking over by the last quarter of the bk. If I wanted to read mystery, I would read a mystery thriller. There is a reason I dont: I. Hate. Mysteries.
As for the romance part, it wasn't that good. The H is like one of those perfect males who falls instantly in love with the h. The h is a pill and in a less generous mood, one wonders what he sees in her. And the smexy times was a lot less sexier than I remembered; either wham bam or fade to black.
For long time fans like myself, the easter eggs are nice. The youngest child of the H&h in The Princess makes an appearance. Later, there is a female doctor with the same name and occupation as the h in Twin of Fire. Also making an appearance is the h from the classic A Knight in Shining Armor....more

I recently realized that I never tried this author before and wanted to see what the fuss was about. Nothing was really appealing and I see that my instincts were right the first time. Where to start?
I wanted to dnf this novel within the first 5 pages. The h is a raging bitch - which is not a dealbreaker - but she is also vacuous, dumb, immature, and has no self-awareness. Those are kinda dealbreaking for me. I couldn't deal with her as one of the narrators because I cannot trust a voice this stupid. I especially "loved" the paragraph where she boasted about her knowledge of gambling and then outright cheated, which was caught by the H. Or how about the part where she bitches about the H literally behind his back and is then surprised that he overheard her? Really? If I have to list every stupid shit she did in the few pages I read, I will be here all day.

Gee, was it hot in here? Well, the author certainly thought so since the word "hot" was using 20 times in the first 60 pages. That? Was NOT hawt. Please get a thesaurus or DIAF :-)

Magazine editor meets gorgeous millionaire on temporary assignment.
Before this, I have read all of Bay's previous works. She may not be the greatest writer but two things stand out: most of her heroines are unlikable and she writes good sex scenes. In that regard, this is typical of her style.
This novella is maybe a 100 pages and I almost couldn't finish the first 40%. The h was an editor at a fashion magazine and I cannot believe that she was any good at her job. She was so uptight and insecure and downright unprofessional. Bitchy at the drop of a hat. When she kept on rolling her eyes non-stop while on assignment, I wondered at her age. Who over the age of 16 does that? (We later learn that she is suppose to be 27.)
Then the h lets down her hair (literally and figuratively) and does a Jeckyll And Hyde and I got whiplash.
