How insane would an author and illustrator have to be to undertake this?
But you guys, this book was fantastic! It treated the subject of Scary Mother Nature fairly and without any hype. It was actually almost comforting, definitely hopeful and empowering.
Through the eyes of two children, we watch a regular family enjoying a regular summer day when a storm blows in, bringing a tornado. Everyone knows what to do, and even though they're scared, they do what needs to be done and take care of each other through it all.
I would love to see this as a series, where families are prepared for and confidently survive a house fire, a flood, an ice storm, coming upon a wild animal, all the scary things we inevitably encounter depending upon where we live....more
I read The Stand in high school, almost as soon as it came out. It instantly became a favorite. I've seen the TV versions, which paled in comparison to the immensity and density of this tome, but I have to admit the miniseries with Gary Sinise, Molly Ringwald and Rob Lowe pretty much nailed it.
08-Mar-2023: I'm re-reading now with a friend who has had no exposure to the book or screen versions. We're planning to bounce back and forth between the 1100+ page book and the 48 hour audiobook, to maintain focus.
How did I find someone who has managed to escape four decades of the hype? I'm still a little baffled, but glad to have him along on this epic quest.
