There are so many things wrong with this book, but I'm not wasting my time detailing all of it. I can't believe this won the 1 star - Mystery/Thriller
There are so many things wrong with this book, but I'm not wasting my time detailing all of it. I can't believe this won the Goodreads Choice Award for Winner for Best Horror. No way is this the best, and it's definitely not a horror book. It actually felt like a YA novel to me.
The big, stupid, cheesy, dumpster fire plot twist is that the (view spoiler)[super leftist snowflake atheist parents who don't allow any food that's not organic, red meat, saying "bless you" after sneezing, or celebrate Christmas end up being villains who couldn't have children of their own, so they murdered a mother (because she let her daughter have to much screen time while she painted), buried her body in the woods, and then kidnapped the daughter and forced her to become a boy to keep him for their own. (hide spoiler)] Liberal stereotypes and conservative propaganda anyone?
The scene where Mallory finds the dad (view spoiler)[drunk and sleeping in her bed with her bras everywhere (hide spoiler)] was brushed off like it wasn't a big deal.
This was such a disappointment, and I also didn't like the audiobook narrator....more
I just can't with this mess. Talk about the most deceptive title and cover, ever. I expected a dark mystery thriller, and instead, I g1 star - Mystery
I just can't with this mess. Talk about the most deceptive title and cover, ever. I expected a dark mystery thriller, and instead, I got a Mean Girls hen night with a bunch of annoying, childish, squabbling characters, stupid, ridiculous plot reveals, and an underwhelming, lame climax.
I mean seriously, the big secret is that (view spoiler)[Clare was the one who texted Nora the breakup text using James's phone back when they were teenagers instead of James, and now Clare's planning to murder her own fiance James and pinning the murder on Nora to keep the truth from coming out to protect her idolized reputation. (hide spoiler)] It was such an absurd twist and a total letdown.
This is the second mystery/thriller in a row I've read that has been a huge disappointment. I honestly can't believe they're making a movie about this book....more
This book is a train wreck. The characters are all awful, horrible people, the multiple POVs are confusing and so1.5 stars - Mystery/Suspense/Thriller
This book is a train wreck. The characters are all awful, horrible people, the multiple POVs are confusing and some end up being totally pointless, and the plot is convoluted and utterly ridiculous. There are so many serious subjects touched on in this book: rape, sexual harassment, gaslighting, cheating, voyeurism, embezzlement, depression, suicide, nature vs nurture, genealogy, women enabling men, sperm donation, IVF, miscarriages, toxic relationships, and the use of them feels disingenuous, discounted, and shallow.
(view spoiler)[The Peeping Tom cabin owner’s point of view was totally pointless and didn’t add anything to the story. I hated the way Hannah, Cricket, and Liza all coddled Mako and covered for him. When everything came out and the extent of Mako’s crimes were revealed, it still seemed like they diminished and downplayed it. And he pretty much got away with it all. I mean, he gets house arrest until his trial, and his still-pregnant wife Liza, who miraculously survived being stabbed in the belly by Trina/Cat because of him, is going to stand by her man? WTAF?! And the chapter from dead Cat’s POV looking down on everything before riding off on a motorcycle with her non-bio dad to the great beyond was so bizarre. (hide spoiler)]

This is one of those books that I feel like I must have read something different than everyone else who read it. It's highly rated and1 star - Mystery
This is one of those books that I feel like I must have read something different than everyone else who read it. It's highly rated and a lot of my GR friends liked it, but it just didn't work for me. The writing style was confusing and off-putting, the pace was slow, the plot was implausible and full of holes, and the twists/mystery reveal was ridiculous. There were so many things that just didn't make sense.
(view spoiler)[The kidnapped girl, "Delilah", that was found wasn't the real Delilah. The real Delilah was held captive in a neighbor's music studio attic for 11 years by a neighbor, Bea, who killed Delilah's mother. And we're supposed to believe that Bea's partner, Kate, never went in there or heard anything in 11 years of living together? And the police and medical examiner were so incompetent that they ruled Meredith's murder a suicide, even though she had been hit in the head by a hammer, had a knife wound to the gut, her wrists were slashed by a knife, and the daughter she had with her at the time went missing afterward? How did a coroner not catch that Shelby had been hit by a car? Why didn't Meredith tell her husband about the texts? (hide spoiler)]
I'm glad so many readers enjoyed this, but I was really disappointed....more
