Just as in Priory, Fallen Night features a cast of incredible characters, a wide world ruled by varying faiths and politics, and meticulous lore that I absolutely loved exploring.
Wulf might just be one of my favorite characters from any book ever; his kindness, strength, and struggles endeared him to me immediately. I also really appreciated the subtle hints of aromanticism/asexuality that I saw laced through his story. Perhaps others might disagree with that interpretation of him, since he does have a few different romantic/sexual relationships, but I felt that it was very well represented. He chooses his partners carefully and often takes a long time to come around to the idea of a relationship with them or realize how he feels. He doesn’t always pick up on others feelings for him until given an obvious sign. He wants love, but he doesn’t throw himself into it; all things that I, as a person in the aroace spectrum, loved seeing in a character.
Glorian’s story also stood out to me, particularly her growth from a terrified girl into a powerful queen. I thought it was really well navigated, especially given the length of time this book covers. I feel like it could have been easy for her to just become such a strong figure and blame it on the passage of time, but instead we see her fight to become that person through grief, pregnancy, battle, and tremendous loss. Her journey isn’t always linear and she often backtracks, sinking into the same fears that ruled her when she was young, and has to find a way out. It made her an incredibly real character and I loved the sections written from her perspective.
The other thing that I absolutely loved in this book was the queer representation and how causal it was. Trans, nonbinary, aroace, gay, lesbian, and bisexual characters were allowed to exist unapologetically in whatever position they held, which was absolutely wonderful— the queer dream, honestly. I also particularly loved that there were several queer relationships between middle aged characters, who had been together for several decades. I feel like that’s not something I’ve seen very often in many books, and it was very refreshing.

It is so inspiring learning how much heart and soul these women have put into this sport; not only on the pitch, but in meetings and lawsuits and arguments. Reading this book in 2024 is also incredibly special, I think, because you can see the legacy they’ve created. Women’s soccer has never been bigger in the US, and it is thanks to those who have been fighting for equality since 1985.
I also particularly loved that this book was entertaining no matter what the topic was. Whether it was about lawsuits, the players’ personal lives, or the game itself, Murray made each moment feel special and important. There was never a dull moment, whether or not you know the players and the sport. I will 100% be rereading this again and look forward to using some of these stories in my thesis on women in the sports industry....more
