Olivie Blake's writing is like nothing else. And some people are gonna love it and some people are gonna hate but I feel like you really can't deny how innovative and refreshing it feels.

This was an absolutely beautiful story spanning 400 years and three different generations of women in the Weyward family line. At its core, it's a story of survival and strength and also women. Loved it!
I will say the bugs grossed me out, the visuals were a little too spot-on. ...more

Pros: felt like an accurate portrayal of Texas high society - I wish there were more scenes of this
Cons: I never quite understood why Cece was all up Joan’s butt (but I think that’s the point of the book too so idk)...more

Aaah I really really wanted to like this one but idk something about it fell flat for me? Maybe it’s because I felt no connection to either character Aaah I really really wanted to like this one but idk something about it fell flat for me? Maybe it’s because I felt no connection to either character
Like I knew the stories were devastatingly brutal instances of survival but I was just reading them not actually feeling them if that makes sense?

Two things I really enjoyed 1. The style of writing - an almost wry and humorous combo of fiction and historical context at the same time 2. The layout - first the family tree with many similar names, the deaths and each chapter is a death and those are further split into stages of life and then just how the focus of each chapter is the “death” but Grames gives you the background leading up to each one so it just feels like this beautiful fully fleshed out story
Totally did not just finish this at work…haha. Anyways this was an unexpected good read of mine, it’s been on my shelf for a long time (shoutout Emmi Totally did not just finish this at work…haha. Initially I got an icky feeling from Anders and his motives for going back to Frick Island (journalism, Piper) but that’s just who his character is: he’s human and he’s flawed but he’s human. He’s also not your typical romance male main character: he’s awkward he’s scared of bugs he has a cowlick LOL.
