You need a strong stomach for some of these scenes, but I just couldn’t put it down. The romance was the slowest slowburn as we’re inundated with mysteries and more questions at every turn, but I appreciated that the romance itself was not as dark as the overall plot. Lillia and Devryk were quite sweet and hot together. My only qualm was that their relationship seemed very much hinged on lust and attraction instead of a deep emotional connection. But this is common with forbidden romance tropes.
I would recommend this if you’re looking for an intriguing, dark thriller with spice....more

It’s so unique and the romance is so incredibly sweet with the perfect amount of toxic, jealous, obsessive/possessive tendencies to really stir shit up. I loved both Atticus and Reid, for very different reasons. There were definitely quite a few red flags between them but it all somehow came together and worked. Just a whirlwind of a book that keeps you on your toes with all the feels.

Great plot and hilarious, I laughed out loud many times. Misery is such a likable heroine. Her banter and jokes, and the way she hates (and adores) the cat and the kid, is just so damn funny. Suspenseful, angsty, action-packed, heart-wrenching, and emotional. The truth is out, Carter knows about the operation that will save thousands of trafficked slaves, and he knows that his brother and Nathan have been lying to him all along. He is gutted and devastated. But he doesn’t even have time to really come to terms with those feelings of betrayal because they still have a dangerous mission to complete.
The trust and relationship between Carter and Nathan (Travis) is broken and feels irreparable. But I love how the author still gives us hope that things will eventually work out between them. I cannot wait to read the final book. I am so attached to these characters, I’m going to miss them when I’m finished. ...more

I was interested to read a story about a recovering sex addict but Rayne wasn’t really addicted to sex, he was addicted to conning men out of money by having sex with them. So it didn’t really make sense that he had to abstain from masturbation while in recovery.
I really loved Mike’s possessiveness when it came to Rayne. This felt very damsel in distress, swoon-worthy in the first half but the second half dragged and the drama felt too convenient and over the top. This would have been much better if the last 100 pages didn’t exist....more

On the surface it’s a second-chance/forced-proximity romance between two centuries-old vampires who drifted apart long ago but are now brought back together, trapped in the underground catacombs, hunted by an unknown dangerous force.
Their personal story and renewed romance slowly unfolds in a very bizarre, dream-like way, shrouded in the horror of their surroundings with monsters and creatures.
I loved the constant push and pull of their anger/resentment toward one another mashed with their obvious underlying love that never truly went away. Just a beautiful, hauntingly-creepy story.
“As we walked — ascending from the narrow, cobbled avenues of the old market to the brutal face of the city proper, the blare of modern streets assailing us — I was as much thankful for Bonifacio’s presence as I yearned to fling him into traffic.”
“As far as my other options, well, I supposed there was loneliness, suicide, or imprisoning Cassio in an oversized birdcage and begging him to take me back until the seas rose, the sun burst, and hell froze over, for I knew beyond a shadow of a doubt that no force on earth could compel my Cassiodorus to do that which he did not perform of his own volition. I usually love the themes here— jealous/possessive/instalove/obsession/protection —but this just had that over-the-top meathead masculine, ‘70s Miami Vice feel that is not attractive to me. Daniel May brings this strange, dark, and at times desperate world to life with beautiful, introspective writing. One of my favorite reads of the year.
Nerva and Pascal, sons of rival mob bosses, were married young in secret before horrific events separated them. Now, ten years later they’re reunited under less than ideal circumstances, both hardened and destroyed by what they have endured. This story slowly unravels their history as they struggle to find their lost humanity and the love they thought they lost forever. There is so much plot here—action, violence, dark humor, horror, betrayal, forgiveness, death—but there is also a subtle romance that is heartbreakingly beautiful.
Definitely read Blood Sports first to get the full picture of the world these men live in, and Nerva’s background. The writing is… a lot. There’s no other way to describe it. You have to love intricate plots to appreciate this series. It’s complicated and dark, but emotional, brilliant, and never boring.

The intensity just never lets up and I lost count of how many times I cried. The author just whips you back and forth between anxiety, revulsion, and sweet tenderness and hot lust. I don’t know how she managed to make such a dark story sweetly romantic but she succeeded. It’s genius how she slowly warms you up to the depravity so that you don’t even realize you’re in a vat of boiling hot brutality… but cannot stop reading.
Carter is a 22 yr old student, kidnapped and sold into sex slavery by a sadistic group of human traffickers.
Nathan is a major kingpin in the sex slave trade. But he’s also an undercover agent for an elite government agency trying to dismantle the trade! And Carter just happens to be another agent’s little brother. He has no choice but to buy Carter as his personal sex slave in order to save him, but he has to make it look realistic— public rape, degradation, torture, and domination for weeks/months on end and Carter cannot know who he truly is. And OMG, Nathan LOATHES himself for it. Nathan, a sweet man at his core, has made himself into a monster and you truly feel for him.
The story is told in dual POV so you get both sides of these broken, traumatized men. As difficult as this was to read, it was expertly written and I absolutely loved it. A top read of the year for sure. It ends in a cliffhanger and I am jumping into book 2 immediately.
“This is the confusing man who buys sex slaves but treats them kindly. This is the sad boy so starved for touch he just might beg the man for more of it.”
“Dipping sauce? Did his rapist just ask him if he’d like dipping sauce with his chicken nuggets from fucking McDonalds?”
