And when Liana reached the last page of every story, she never said, The end. Instead, she always turned to Evangeline and asked, What do you suppose happens next?
Happy endings can be caught, but they are difficult to hold on to. They are dreams that want to escape the night. They are treasure with wings. They are wild, feral, reckless things that need to be constantly chased, or they will certainly run away.
“You’re asking me for a favor?” “I’m asking you to show some humanity.” Which actually felt almost as dangerous. If Jacks did this for free, it would be easier to once again think he was something he was not. But, from the unfeeling look on his face, that clearly wouldn’t be an issue. “You’re asking for the wrong thing,” he said.
Jacks’s chest was heaving, his clothes were soaked, his hair was a mess across his face—yet in that moment, Evangeline knew he would carry her through more than just freezing waters. He would pull her through fire if he had to, haul her from the clutches of war, from falling cities and breaking worlds. And for one brittle heartbeat, Evangeline understood why so many girls had died from his lips.
“No, Jacks. You can’t go around murdering people because they’re a problem.”
Jacks dropped a heavy arm around her shoulders, sending a shock straight through her as he pulled her suddenly close. “Want me to kill any of them for you?” “No, they’re just gossiping.” “Then what if I merely give them the urge to cut out their own tongues?” he asked, flashing one of his dimples.
Jacks gave her an impressive scowl. “Some of these people deserve to die, you know.” “But it’s LaLa’s party,” she reminded him. He looked as if he wanted to keep arguing. It was actually impressive the way he held on to his scowl as they went down flight after flight of steps to the great dining hall of Slaughterwood Castle. “Can you at least try to smile?” she asked. He flashed his teeth. “That looks predatory.” “I am predatory. So is everyone else here,” he whispered.
“Still think you know what I need?” He pressed in closer, lips nearly grazing her jaw and sending a shiver over her skin as he whispered, “I’m not a human, Evangeline. And I’m not your friend, or your husband, or your lover.” “I never said you were,” she breathed. “Then don’t try to make me act like it. It doesn’t end well.” The fingers under her skirt turned rough and something vicious flashed in his eyes. Enough to make her finally feel a spike of fear. “This doesn’t end well.” His fingers pressed harder.
“Help me open it and you’ll see.” Luc jumped off the tomb, shoved the heavy lid, and turned to her with a satisfied smile as the marble thunked to the ground. “Can I bite you now?” “No, Luc, I’m never going to let you bite me.” “Never say never, Eva.” He flashed a hopeful smile made of fangs before peering into the box. “Are you sure this is the right coffin?”
“I’m not a bad person—but I don’t want to die.”
“Jacks—” His name came out like a sob. She knew he wasn’t a savior, but she didn’t want a savior just then. She didn’t want someone to hold her while she cried and tell her it would be all right. She wanted fury, she wanted rage, she wanted a villain to tell her she’d done exactly what she needed to do.
“It hurts, Jacks.” “I know, love. I’m going to take you somewhere safe.”
“You’re good at this,” she murmured. “Do you often travel with girls who’ve been flayed?” This earned her a soft laugh. “No.” Then quietly, as he ran a cloth along her lower back, just below the dip in her waist, “Would you be jealous if I did?” I’m not a jealous person was what Evangeline intended to say, but instead the words “Of course” came out. Jacks laughed, louder this time. Embarrassment surged through her. “That’s not what I meant to say.” “It’s all right. I’d probably kill another man if I found him with you like this.” Jacks’s hands pressed harder as they went to her shoulders and,

Out of the corner of her eye, she thought she saw him smile. And for a second, nothing hurt.
“He’d been stabbed in the back, and I foolishly thought I could save him. His mother, Honora, was the greatest healer in all the North. And I believed if I could just get him to her fast enough, then she could mend him. But…” He trailed off. She could see on his face he hadn’t been fast enough. “Life is not a kind storyteller. And I’m not meant to be a savior.”
“I mean … it’s just one night,” he said softly. “In the morning, you can forget it. You can go back to pretending you don’t like me, and I can pretend that I don’t care. But for tonight, let me pretend you’re mine.”
She couldn’t deny that she wanted him. Just enough to keep her from pulling away every time he touched her. Enough to keep his name near the tip of her tongue even when he wasn’t in the room. The physical attraction had always been there, but her pull toward him had been increasing ever since the night they’d jumped off that cliff together. Because she’d never actually stopped falling.
She knew it would happen; it always did, Jacks always left, which made this even more foolish, and yet right now, she didn’t want to be smart. She just wanted to be his. She meant to say, For tonight, I’m yours, but all that came out was “I’m yours.”
“Don’t worry, Jacks, I would never inconvenience you by dying.”
He held her so tightly it hurt, but this pain she didn’t mind. She’d let him crush her, let him break her, just as long as he never let her go.
“I swear this is what I really want.” He spoke each word like a vow. “I want to erase every moment you and I have spent together, every word you’ve said to me, and every time I’ve touched you, because if I don’t, I’ll kill you, just like I killed the Fox.”
She hadn’t wanted that to be Jacks’s story—she wanted to be his story.
She wouldn’t want that life.” “I don’t care what she wants!” roared the Fate. “I don’t want her dead. She saved you, you need to save her.”
“I am saving her,” the queen said quietly. “It is kinder to let her die a human than to sacrifice her soul for immortality.”
“That is not a small mistake to fix. If you do this, Time will take something equally valuable from you.” The Fate gave the queen a look more vicious than any curse. “There is nothing of equal value to me.”
