Adrian J. Johnson (Red Masque Media) People who vote for Lantern Sam, thank you. I read the book. It's great! It deserves to be a Newbery 2015!

message 2: by Kim (new)

Kim B. I'll keep an eye out for it!

message 3: by Ceane (new)

Ceane Several books on this list are not eligible--is there someone monitoring the list that can remove them?

See Paper Towns, TFIOS, My Father's Dragon, two Penderwicks, Cosmic,
and the Heir Chronicle books. Maybe others--these are just the ones I know.

I do monitor this list every few days and all of these ineligible books have just been added. They have been removed.

PLEASE only add books that you know are eligible. IF it has not been published in 2014 then IT IS NOT ELIGIBLE. If you do not understand the criteria please follow the link that I posted to read the regulations.

Before nominating a book, keep in mind these criteria:
1. The book must have been published in 2014.
2. The author must be a citizen or resident of the US.
3. The intended audience must be only children up to and including the age of 14. (Most YA books are intended for an older audience and should be more appropriately nominated for the Michael L. Printz Award).

message 5: by DaNae (new)

DaNae Another book that is not eligible is Ophelia and the Marvelous Boy. The author is Australian

Kathy DaNae wrote: "Another book that is not eligible is Ophelia and the Marvelous Boy. The author is Australian"

Thank you DaNae, it has been removed.

message 7: by Betsy (new)

Betsy The Girl Who Could Fly was originally published in 2008. FYI.

message 8: by Becky (new)

Becky B Messenger, Book Thief and The Reluctant Assassain are not eligible.

message 9: by Kathy (new)

Kathy Thank you for your enthusiasm and your love of children's literature. This list is highlighting the best of the best thus far in 2014.
Unfortunately, I had to delete "Boy on the Wooden Box" as it is ineligible. Published in 2013. Please only nominate books if they meet the criteria. Thanks!

message 10: by Rainbowheart (new)

Rainbowheart Some books that might not be eligible?

Sparky by Jenny Offill (picture book)
Hurricane Boy by Laura Roach Dragon (small press, added by author)
Will Poole's Island by Tim Weed (small press, added by author, appears to be YA, not middle grade)

message 11: by Betsy (new)

Betsy Picture books are eligible, as it happens. They don't win as often but they are considered based on their text alone. So Sparky could potentially have a chance.

Self published titles are indeed considered by the chair of whichever committee the book is submitted.
Thanks for your input!

message 13: by Kim (new)

Kim B. The Summer of May, Out of My Mind, May B., and The Sun Trail are ineligible since they were not published in 2014.

message 14: by Becky (new)

Becky B See You at Harry's was published in 2012. It isn't eligible.

message 15: by Kim (new)

Kim B. Ah, missed that one! Thanks!

message 16: by Ben (new)

Ben Seipel Trying to add Emma Trevayne's "Flights and Chimes and Mysterious Times," but it won't add. She is American and it was first published in May 2014. Can anyone help?

message 17: by Kathy (new)

Kathy Ben wrote: "Trying to add Emma Trevayne's "Flights and Chimes and Mysterious Times," but it won't add. She is American and it was first published in May 2014. Can anyone help?"

Added it Ben.

message 18: by Carmen (new)

Carmen Wondering why there seem to be so few titles with male protagonists on this list! I'm thrilled to see so many strong, female leads, but what about the boys? (Just glad that my students are generally pretty open to reading books with protagonists of any gender.)

message 19: by Wendy (new)

Wendy I haven't stopped to count how many books have boy protagonists, but it probably reflects the reading preferences of people on Goodreads more than anything else. It may surprise some to know that there are historically more Newbery winners with boy protagonists than girl protagonists.

message 20: by Wendy (new)

Wendy I just spent a long time deleting many books that shouldn't have been added, before I realized most of them were added by the same member. I've asked her to remove her votes and I hope she does. Unfortunately, with this site being so big now, in the future it might be necessary for whoever starts the list to make themselves the only one who can add books. Others can suggest books in the comments. It will take an hour for someone to get rid of all the inappropriate books at this point.

message 21: by Kathy (new)

Kathy I have spent a great deal of time deleting her books also. It almost seems malicious as I have posted the rules numerous times and she had added books from 10-20 years ago.

message 22: by Renaee (new)

Renaee Smith I don't know what the rules are besides having a book published in 2014 which this book is. The title is The Great Compost Heap by Renaee Smith. It is a children's book about composting.

message 23: by Kathy (new)

Kathy ...and the 2015 Newbery has been awarded to:

"The Crossover,” written by Kwame Alexander, published by Houghton Mifflin Harcourt.

Two Newbery Honor Books also were named:
“El Deafo” by Cece Bell, illustrated by Cece Bell and published by Amulet Books, an imprint of ABRAMS.

“Brown Girl Dreaming,” written by Jacqueline Woodson and published by Nancy Paulsen Books, an imprint of Penguin Group (USA) LLC.

message 24: by DaNae (new)

DaNae Feeling pretty prophetic that I was the one to add THE CROSSOVER to this list. Just wish I'd had faith in my beloved EL DEAFO.

message 25: by Josiah (new)

Josiah Was 365 Days of Wonder by R.J. Palacio eligible for the 2015 Newbery awards? It contains a lot of new material, but also has hundreds of quotes that originated from other sources.

message 26: by Henryetta (new)

Henryetta These books were added and need removing. #68-"Harry Potter & the Sorcerer's Stone" (1997); #117-"Tuck Everlasting" (1975); #120-"The Book Thief" (2006). Please everyone read and follow the instructions. Thank you.

message 27: by Rainbowheart (new)

Rainbowheart Thanks for the heads up! Someone flooded this list with a bunch of non-2014 releases. I deleted the ones you mentioned as well as some others, but let me know if you notice anything else.
