Jessica Stratton’s long-cherished dream of opening her own Folk Art gallery in an idyllic Cape Cod setting finally comes true. However, her start-up is anything but smooth sailing.
Her ten-year marriage hits the rocks and, when the hunk next door to her shop – a brooding ecologist on a mission to save the planet – proves too irresistible to ignore, she’s got to relearn the rules of the dating game while working overtime to lure clients to her boutique.
Unfortunately, someone’s already far too interested in a 19th century example of advertising art in her collection and will go to any means – legal or illegal – to acquire it.
Maybe the planet isn’t the only thing that has to be saved…

Lovely mature romance
I loved this quick fun beach read. As I age, so does my taste, so it was nice to read a 30-something’s happily ever after. For those who have spent time on Cape Cod, or who enjoy antiques and/or American folk art, this will also feel like coming home.
The heroine’s self-discovery even as she uncovers (ahem, excuse the pun) a terrible truth about her marriage, is well depicted and well paced. There is a hint of enemies to lovers in this story with the hero. And the heroine’s best friend is a hoot. All in all, while quite different than French Ghost, Ms LaBalme’s characters again made the book and kept me reading.

In a short, romantic read, Jessica bounces from happy to shattered wife to enamored of her sexy new neighbor. Thankfully, she also has her new folk art gallery to concentrate on. But the ecologist next door rattles her brain and body, even as an unscrupulous acquaintance attempts to further upend her life. In the opening of a new series, Corinne LaBalme offers light romance in picturesque Cape Cod to savor in the waning days of summer.

Jessica Stratton’s idyllic life secure in a solid marriage and a successful career as a partner with her husband in a gallery suddenly blows up in her face. She discovers a shocking secret about her spouse on the eve of their tenth wedding anniversary, and instead of a celebration, her marriage goes up in smoke. She seeks refuge at her summer home on Cape Cod to pick up the pieces of her shattered life and figure out what to do next. A chance meeting with a hunky neighbor and a decision to open her own Folk Art Gallery at her summer home change everything.

Author Corinne LaBalme has written an engaging tale with a well-written plot that moves at a comfortable pace. The story is driven by love, loss, betrayal of trust, and the inner strength one must summon to face reality when everything one believes in turns out to be a lie.
Part romance, part mystery, part redemption, and a second chance at love and life, Summer People does not disappoint. LaBalme has created a cast of flawed, but believable characters who drive the plot, and readers find themselves rooting for them right from the first page. The author creates enough conflict with a backstory and throws in a couple of clever red herrings to keep readers turning the pages to see how it all turns out. LaBalme’s detailed description of Cape Cod and the lifestyle there add to the authenticity of the story.

Summer People will capture the imagination of readers who enjoy a love story fueled by strife and believe that when one door closes, another one opens if we are brave enough to grasp the handle of the door.

This thoroughly enjoyable beach read has more than earned the five-star rating this reader has given it.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

This was the perfect book for me to read as I am headed to Cape Cod to spend the weekend with dear college friends.

The main character, Jessica, lives in Boston and works at an art gallery owned by her husband, Max. Her dream is to open her own gallery to showcase the American Folk Art she has been collecting for years. Her dream becomes a reality when she decides to not rent out their Cape Cod house for the summer and open her own gallery there.

On the night of their 10th wedding anniversary, Jessica discovers a devastating secret about her husband. This secret ends their marriage. Enter Rick, the neighbor across the street from her home and now gallery in Cape Cod. I think you know where this is going.

This is an easy read because it is a such a sweet story.

I received an advance copy of this book from the author and Voracious Readers Only.

Jessica Stratton and her husband are successful gallery owners in Boston, but Jessica fantasizes about opening her own folk art gallery in Cape Cod. Her marital relationship of ten years is polite but rather vanilla, and on their anniversary, she learns why. Shocked and devastated by her husband’s secret, Jessica retreats to her beloved Cape Cod to jumpstart her gallery dream. But it’s not easy to start over, and Jessica struggles to reconcile with her past while facing the challenges of starting a new business, a new life, and possibly a new romance. LaBalme crafts a story that moves breezily through the small town vibrancy of Cape Cod with vivid descriptions of folk art and thirty-something characters that feel so real, you’d swear you’ve met them. Summer People is an effortlessly comforting novel about starting over and allowing yourself to find love again when everything you’ve known is turned upside down.

Summer People by Corinne LaBalme is a sweet romance.

This book is perfect for a relaxing summer day. The descriptions of the scenery made me want to move there immediately. I love small towns where everyone knows everyone and has good neighbors. This story is full of them. The plot is entertaining with the slow-build romance, Jessica's evaluation of her life, and the mystery towards the end. The characters were terrific. They had
good chemistry even though we didn't see any intimate scenes between them. Nadia was my favorite, she was the friend we all need in our lives, crazy and witty at the same time. The part that I liked the most was the secret about the statue.

If you like a quick enjoyable read then this book is for you. I will rate it with 4 stars.

Sweet romance. The setting and characters in this story will have you longing for antiquing trips through the seaside towns dotting the Massachusetts coast. This story has fun characters, some who deserve to be despised, and wonderful settings. The author has you breathing in the ocean air while your toes wriggle through the sand, making this the perfect summer read. Pull up a beach chair and let the sweet romance unfold.

I was sent a copy for review by voraciousreaders only. This is an ideal beach read. A sweet story with heartache and romance following Jessica fulfilling a dream which had been vetoed for so long, helped along her journey by a sexy neighbour. Easy to follow and get engrossed with the characters, well worth a read.

It was a great beach read. I liked how there was a little drama mixed into the storyline. There were parts I didn’t see coming so it was a fun surprise. I would read another book by this author again and I would recommend this book to other people.

A marriage in tatters, a hunky next-door neighbor, and someone willing to steal antiquities, Jessica’s not sure her dream on the Cape is worth all the strife and peril. Jessica’s finally launching her folk art gallery in Cape Cod. With the approval of her husband and the support of her friend, Nancy, she’s ready for any and all challenges. Or is she? It’s a rocky start and Jessica’s not prepared for it all. She learns a terrible secret from her husband and the betrayal is visceral. Her marriage in shambles, she turns to her sexy neighbor for comfort. But dating again is fraught with complications. Thank goodness for Nancy. It’s difficult starting over but Jessica soon learns what it means to be summer people.

Summer People is an emotional romance about fulfilling your dreams, starting over, and falling in love. From the very beginning, I connected with Jessica. She’s a woman who is about to start her own gallery and frankly, she’s nervous. When she mistakes her next-door neighbor for a criminal, it’s hilarious. I kept rooting for her, even after one epic fail after another. Life is never smooth, especially when you’re shooting for the moon. Jessica has the strength of many but doesn’t quite believe in herself. In walks BFF Nancy. She is my favorite character. Nancy, that is. She is the lifeline in all things and has a wicked sense of humor. She guides Jessica every step of the way. The friendship these two women share is realistic, heartfelt, and endearing. The romance between Jessica and Rick (next-door neighbor) starts off as enemies to lovers but morphs into friends to lovers. I enjoyed the slow-burn aspect of their romance. Jessica is still ‘happily married’ when they first meet. This couple has obstacles to overcome, including trust issues, but the emotional journey they take makes for an unputdownable read. Corinne LaBalme is a talented writer who crafts stories that are familiar yet have a twist here and there to make it unique. You’ll fall in love with Summer People, just as I did.

Author Corinne LaBalme has cracked it again with this wonderfully sweet and engaging story.

Its Jessica’s tenth wedding anniversary. Excited at the prospect of upcoming celebrations with her wealthy husband Max, she has made all the arrangements. Then disaster strikes. The home she rents out has been burgled, or has it? When she finds handsome stranger, Rick, camping out in her home. Jessica immediately assumes the worst. Determined not to be walked all over she confronts the ‘unwanted lodger’ Rick. It doesn’t go well.

Jessica is happily married, or so she thinks. Eddie, an old school friend has arrived at the marital home. Eddie is one of those characters you really love to hate. Nasty, snide, and with ulterior motives he is out to ruin Jessica’s plans and her life.

Meanwhile, though the chemistry between Rick and her is almost palpable, and there are more encounters, she remains loyal to her husband. With a tiny paper-trail of imagined wishful thinking and hints of mystery, the story is woven.
This really is a lovely read. I recommend you put it on the top of your TBR list.

After a reading hiatus, I was relieved and thrilled that the first book of the new year that I recently finished, Summer People by Corinne LaBalme, inspired me to write this review.

The synopsis stated that Jessica’s marriage was “hitting the rocks”. The reason the heroine’s marriage was falling apart was unexpected. It was an interesting plot thread that remained solid throughout the story. I was thankful the hero, Rick, lived next door to Jessica. It just so happens he was gorgeous and available.

Rick is a prime example of a true hero. He bailed Jessica out of a few humorous situations. I know I mentioned he is a hunk, but did I mention he can cook? He’s my kind of book boyfriend!

The cast of characters are well-developed and one of my favorites was Nancy, who is friends with Jessica and Rick’s landlord. I enjoyed the relationship between Jessica and Nancy because they demonstrated what it is to be a best friend.

I was delighted that my interest was captured so quickly when the story started. If you’ve ever listened to one of those self-help CDs and rolled your eyes at them, then the beginning of this book might crack you up like it did me. I was entertained from the beginning to the end and still find myself smiling as I reflect on this romance story.

There is a suspenseful plot thread referred to in the synopsis about someone who is far too interested in a piece of Jessica’s art collection. This particular person will go to any means to acquire it. This wrongdoer really knew how to raise my blood pressure.

The romance between Jessica and Rick was sweet, heartwarming and endearing. They certainly went through their share of trials and tribulations which made their happily ever after extra rewarding for me.

I haven’t any reservations in recommending this entertaining read. Summer People was a win for me. Happy Reading.

I admit I am a sucker for these books where a woman decides to start over on an island and finds true love. But this one is just a little different.

Jessica already owns this charming old house on Cape Cod and rents it out during the summers. This summer, for fun, she decides to switch things up and finally open an antique store featuring the Americana pieces she loves and her hoity-toity husband won't allow in his fancy Boston gallery.

She knows there's something off in her marriage, but can't quite put her finger on it.

And as long as she believes she has a real marriage, she is not pursuing the hottie across the street.

And oh, how I love the first time they meet.

Rick as as you'd expect - the gorgeous friendly and helpful guy who is doing his own do-over and was badly hurt in a previous relationship. And he can't help but be attracted to Jessica, even though he can't quite figure her out.

They do strike up quite the friendship, which is necessary for the stable foundation, especially after being so badly burned. And Jessica is able to find some inner strength that has been stifled for years.

Throw in a conniving little weasel of a man and you get a hint of a thriller as well.

Kudos to the author for taking this trope and making it all her own. I was thoroughly entertained on a cold and rainy evening.

Prepare to be swept into a gorgeous, vivid setting and follow along as Jessica Stratton navigates her life after the demise of her marriage and the opening of her art gallery. This author knows how to craft a compelling, emotional story that grips readers from the first page and drops them into a page-turning ride filled with surprises, humor, romance, and suspense. LaBalme follows "French Ghost" with a delicious and delightfully satisfying story of loves lost, found, and thwarted by an archly drawn villain whose greed exceeds his common sense. The heroine, Jessica, is easy to root for and her love interest, Rick, is such a satisfying heart throb! LaBalme deftly puts obstacles in Jessica's way and it's a delight to follow her as she finally achieves her happily ever after. The New England scenery offers a wonderful, authentic backdrop to this story told with grace and humor.

I used to live in Boston so reading summer people was like a trip back for me. I wish I could have experienced a romance as hot as Jessica's there but at least I can live vicariously through hers. Everyone in Boston loves to travel to the Cape to go antiquing. It was a fun read with twist and turns that kept you guessing. You also learned a bit about antiques. But no romance would be complete without a sexy leading man, and Rick fits the bill. Let me just say you are in for a fun ride filled with bumps along the way.

With a swirl of characters, LaBalme, etches a landscape of Cape Cod with swift strokes of Boston in the background. This is a page-turner full of laughs with deep longing in several characters all playing out simultaneously; Jessica finds herself in conflict between following her true self and remaining the person she’s pretended to be for nearly ten years. With laugh out loud moments, intrigue, and a tricky villain on the horizon, three men seem to want to do or undue Jessica and Wilder House Antiques. As for me, I wanted more chapters, so I guess I’ll be waiting for book two.

Deception, romance, and more! I thought that the plot for this story was interesting, and it included a plot line I didn’t expect. With that being said, there were some things that confused me a little as I was reading. The story seemed a bit rushed, and I didn’t feel like I had any closure about what happened to Jessica’s husband. I think it could’ve been explained a little better, but otherwise the story was good.

I picked up this book to help pass the boredom of a long flight, and what a good choice that had been. I hardly wanted to touch down. This gentle but engaging story absorbed me for hours, instilling in me a longing to visit Cape Cod, drink in the atmosphere of the coastal community where Jessica Statton started her new business, suffered a humiliating breakup and found happiness by falling for her dreamy neighbour. But, don't be fooled, this charming tale is not without grit and drama!

I haven't read this yet and it's not in my typical genre (but I must admit for a college class I once had to read a plethora of Nora Roberts books) but I know someone who would love this being that it's set in Cape Cod and romance based. Also the cover is an absolute beauty! I'm sure this will make a good summer Gift for the beach!

In a bewildering personal and political moment, this book was the reprieve I needed: the writing feels like a fresh breeze from the ocean. Everyone who has ever needed to rebuild him or herself after a breakup will identify with Rick and Jessica.

Persistently laugh-out-loud funny, Corinne LaBalme is one of my favourite writers, living or dead.
