Raising two half-breed teenagers as a widowed witch is just the beginning of my midlife crisis.

My husband got into a fight and plunged off a bridge,
Leaving me to raise our two children on my own.
After struggling for the last fourteen years,
I pack up my kids and move in with my crazy old aunt in Carlton.
I land a waitressing gig,
And the moment I meet the head chef,
His deep green eyes have me spellbound.
Drew may be a single parent like me,
But with his bad boy looks and mischievous smile,
I know he’ll be nothing but trouble—
Especially when I hear he’s a bear shifter, just like my late husband.
His unusual last name sounds strangely familiar, though.
Intuition has me pull the police report for my husband’s case,
But it burst into flames in my hands when I saw the name of the suspect:
The same one belonging to the man I can’t resist.
Drew swears he didn’t kill him, but I don’t believe him.
Until my dead husband shows up at the restaurant alive and well—
With a new mate and two kids.

Steamy shifter love scenes and an HEA inside! No cheating or cliffhanger in this standalone romance. Readers 18+.

This one was interesting on a couple of fronts. First Shannon being a witch and connected to the old lady with the food cards. The old lady is a hoot and was great in this one! I found it interesting how Shannon's past came back to haunt her and the connection she had to Drew beyond their attraction when working together.

Things got a bit crazy at the end, but Shannon did what she needed to, even the hard parts and there were multiple hard parts. I was glad when she and Drew were able to work things out and have a bright future together.

Story: Shannon (h), a widowed witch, moves to Carlton with her two half-breed teenagers to live with her eccentric aunt. Struggling to make ends meet, she lands a job as a waitress at The Warehouse, where she meets Drew (H), the head chef, and a fellow single parent. Despite their instant attraction, Shannon is wary of Drew's bad boy image and discovers he's a bear shifter like her late husband. When she uncovers a connection between Drew and her husband's death, tensions rise. However, the situation takes a surprising turn when Shannon's supposedly deceased husband shows up alive with a new family. As secrets unravel and pasts collide, Shannon and Drew must navigate trust, betrayal, and newfound revelations to forge a future together. Hot and steamy witch-bear shifter, later in life, fated mates romance about resilience, overcoming challenges, and the complexities of family dynamics in the midst of magical upheaval.

Audio: Narrator D.C. Cole does a great job with Drew and other male voices, and a good job with Shannon’s voice - I personally prefer a female narrator is used to voice female voices. The audio quality is good and there were no issues.

This was messy and inconsistent with its pacing, story, and characters. The characters acted the most annoying way possible in the situation at every turn, and the book was constantly filled with characters' thought process to how they should feel about something, back tracking on it, and then thinking everything through again for pages at a time of nothing being accomplished.

One of the taglines of the story is that the ML was involved with the FL's ex's death, but that piece of the story lasted for maybe three pages and had no impact, so it was obviously added just to give some intrigue to the story description.

All in all, a not good read I had to force myself to finish because it was short enough that it felt stupid not to finish it.

Neither Drew nor Shannon could explain the pull towards each other or the electric current that passed through them when they touched. However, what they didn’t know was that they were already connected in the past and once this is discovered, it would take them on a wild and bumpy ride, prior to them accepting their fated life together. This is a beautifully written take about betrayal, fated lovers, secrets, tryst issues and the benefits of honest communication. I really enjoyed reading this story and can’t wait to read the next book in the series.

Shannon moves to town with her 2 kids; she is living with her aunt. Shannon is a witch, and her dead husband was a bear. She goes to work at the restaurant with Drew the chef and they are instantly attracted to each other. Drew is also a single parent, and they spend a little time together; her kids have to tell her he is a bear shifter. Drew and Shannon are not interested in being together and when Shannon finds out he was in Seatle when her husband died that's not good.

An enjoyable read with Shifters and mates, and trouble around every corner. Nothing will keep these mates apart except miscommunication.

The pages kept turning because I wanted to know what happened.

These books are quick and easy reads.

Keeping a secret has never been so big.

This book is part of the Shifter Nation: Fated Over Forty series and the main characters are Shannon Wood, single mother to teenagers Kinsley and Liam, and Drew Proval, a bear shifter and single father to ten year old Emma. Shannon has moved her kids back from Portland, to the small town of Carlton, to stay with her crazy old aunt, Lenora Millhouse, after Liam had some issues with his magic at school. Both her kids are part witch from her and part bear shifter from their dead father Jason. She goes for an interview for a job as a server at The Warehouse, with Chase Thompson, he owner of the brewery and attached restaurant. They brew craft beers and have a huge following in town and without, getting ever more popular and also busy. Drew is the chef in the kitchen of The Warehouse, but used to live in Portland until he got fed up with the pack and city life. The local alpha of the Thompson clan is Chris and he helps out where necessary, with all shifters and their families. Unlike how life was run in Portland. Shannon has been alone since her drunken husband picked a fight with the wrong people and fell off a bridge, never to be seen. She was pregnant with Liam at the time and Kinsley was only a toddler. She has had to work hard to make ends meet and neglected her magical side and didn’t have the knowledge to pass any training onto her kids when it comes to magic, which is hence why they moved in with Leonora, even if it is a bit cramped.
Drew and Shannon are drawn to each other, as Chase shows her around and he ends up having a cooking accident, being saved by Shannon’s quick response! Chase offers her the job and she starts almost immediately. Even though Drew is drawn to her, he doesn’t want a relationship, as he needs to care for his daughter and not do what his ex-wife is doing, by parading around a never ending line of new suitors Emma is supposed to get along with. But being a good work colleague and driving her home after her car breaks down, soon sees them in a clinch. Drew’s appearance, with his multitude of tattoos and then finding out he is a bear shifter like her ex, put her off making any sort of move on a relationship with Drew and when she finds out that his name is linked to her past, she doesn’t feel she can trust him! The police report for her late husband’s death has Drew’s name on it and her magic goes haywire with all the emotion. Lenora has a job to teach Liam what comes almost naturally for Kinsley, but also warns Shannon not to ignore her magical side! A huge shock is coming for Shannon, and arrives at her place of work, leaving her unable to believe what she is seeing and with someone willing to pull her back into her old life, for their own selfish purposes. Shannon wants to stand on her own two feet and doesn’t like when anyone, even Drew, tries to stand up for her or protect her, and with her crazy old aunt ready with a shotgun, there is really no need. Her kids are going to have to decide what to do with this shocking development and Drew has to deal with his first hand taste of magic and the secrets Shannon held back from him. He can’t judge her for not telling him she was a witch, since he has his own secret side he has kept hidden from her, but it certainly doesn’t help the romance sparkle until they can get everything off their chests. A HEA ending once the shocks diminish and a new family joins the Thompson clan in their time of need, with all helping out. I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.

Bear’s Midlife Witch is the eighth story in the Shifter Nation: Fated Over Forty series and delivers an intriguing, and tense romance with a few unexpected twists along the way.

Shannon has returned to Carlton to live with her aunt in the hopes of helping her son get his magic under control. She’s a witch with unusually strong abilities, however, she’s also let her magic just sit there mostly unused as she goes about life raising two children on her own after her husband’s death. With a teenage son whose magic isn’t exactly stable and a teenage daughter who loves to annoy her younger brother with her own abilities, well, life is hectic enough without tossing a romance into the mix.

Drew is handling fatherhood on his own and is very protective of his daughter. So, he sticks with creating delicious meals as a chef and leaves the romance for the other folks to worry about since he has enough on his plate right now. But that notion goes out the window when Shannon begins working at the brewery and the attraction is instant. Yet, she’s a witch and he’s a bear shifter both with kids… no way this is ever going to work, right?

I had fun with Bear’s Midlife Witch. The story is solid, exactly what I expect from this author, and those curveballs, well, that just made Shannon and Drew’s journey all the more interesting. I love the little glimpses of the town, the food trucks, and some of the folks we met in earlier books. Those kinds of details matter to me, just as secondary characters that can stand on their own always make a story more interesting to me. There were moments when I would have loved to have a stern conversation with Shannon and Drew, but they had to discover some things the hard way – like not always believing the worst before you know all the facts.

If you love a good, solid Shifter Romance with sizzling chemistry, shenanigans galore, twists and turns to the story, and characters that leap off the page then you’ll love Bear’s Midlife Witch and feel right at home in this series.

Shannon has moved in with her Aunt Leonora, otherwise known as ‘that scary lady!’ Her husband died a while ago and her children are now teenagers, attitudes an all. She interviews for a waitressing job, which she gets and notices the hunk of a chef called Drew.
Drew nearly burns something important when he first sees Shannon and is drawn to her but unsure why.
Shannon is a witch but has neglected her talent and is hoping her aunt can help her son with his magic. When she finds out Drew is a bear shifter like her dead husband and Drew finds out she is a witch, they argue and sling hateful words at each other. She is trying to protect herself and he is trying to protect his daughter.
This was a great story: Shannon and Drew both have demons they need to sleigh and learn to trust each other especially when their past comes back!
A sensitive, insightful story about surviving, trust and finding new love.
I highly recommend this series; it is so much fun.

The world is a small place even for shifters.

Drew has settled back in town with his daughter and working at The Warehouse. Life is good. Shannon has just moved back with her two children to live with Aunt Lenora while they get things figured out. The loss of her husband years ago has been a struggle but as her children come to grips with their powers a few ops arise.

The instant attraction between Drew and Shannon shocks them both. They struggle against it and how it would fit into their lives. There is a link to their past that comes to light that could destroy everything they are trying to create. Can they survive what it will mean to both of them in the present and the future?

I loved Drew and Shannon’s story. It was real with the ups and downs we face in life. How to deal with surprises along the way that you can never see coming. Forgiveness and kindness to those who need it. Recognizing that everyone deserves a chance to be more than they think they can.

Great Addition to the Series!

Shannon has struggled to raise her two children after her husband was killed. Now they are both older and she wants to get them out of the big city and into a safer environment. She moves to Carlton to live with her aunt Lenora. She has lost touch with her witch because she has been just trying to survive.

Drew Prowlx is the chef at The Warehouse, a restaurant and brew house. He is the father of a 10 year old daughter that he shares custody with his ex, and a bear shifter. He is content with his life until he meets Shannon when she comes to work at the restaurant. They are both drawn to each other, even though they both tell themselves this isn’t a good time to start a relationship. They are just starting a relationship when the past rears it’s ugly head! Will their fledgling relationship survive?.

Meg Ripley does it again. Another feel good story in the fated Over Forty series, book eight to be exact. Hope that the Thompson clan does not run out of shifters that need mates. All the books are written as standalones including Bear's Midlife Witch, but I personally have certainly enjoyed reading them all as they were written. In Bear's Midlife Witch we meet Shannon and her two children. Shannon is a witch and her children are witches and bear shifters. She gets a job at The Warehouse, a brewery and restaurant. She meets Drew there, he is the head chef. Ms. Ripley does a great job with her characters and story line. Her characters seem like they are just ordinary people but they all have an extra ability. These books always make me feel good, the people are great and familiar from past books. The plots are interesting and every once in a while there is something I did not see coming.

This was an awesome book and the storyline had me turning the pages and to watch Shannon and Drew struggle with parenthood just makes it so much better. Shannon is a witch who married a bear shifter but who is now widower with two teenage kids with her son having trouble controlling his magic and his sister giving him a hard time and when it gets out of control and he burns down his bully’s locker and so they move back to Carlton with her crazy aunty Lenora and lands a job at the brewery as a waitress. Drew is a single dad and bear shifter and is a chef at the brewery where he meets Shannon the gorgeous new waitress and the hot chemistry that’s burning between them is off the charts but can they get past there issues and have a future together or not. There is so much more to this book and I didn’t want to spoil it anymore. Great book.

Shannon is a witch, she moved to town to live with her aunt who is also a witch so she can help her son with his magic. She ends up getting a job in the local bar, where she meets Drew who is the chef.
She feels like she knows his name somehow, but isn't sure why.
Drew feels a connection to Shannon and knows she is his mate. But both have children to think of and don't want to get into a relationship.
However, Drew has more of a connection to Shannon than he realises, as he was connected to the death of her husband.
Will Shannon believe that Drew was not involved in her husbands death. Shannon knows he is a bear shifter, but what will Drew think about his mate being a witch.

I enjoyed reading this book and would recommend it.

"Everything needed to get easier, or she was going to break."

There is a special kind of magic in Shannon and Drew's story as they face the all too relatable struggles of trying to figure out when to open up about themselves how much to the one they think they might be starting a relationship with... add the complication of kids, and when to share how much about their relationship, and this story is a sweet tribute to the challenges of parenthood, as well as the joys. It respects the hard conversations and decisions... and remembers that parents are real, vibrant, people too.

This done in one Kindle Unlimited quick read is a solid stand alone book. Characters from other books in the series appear in this story, but instead of being part of an overarching arc, this is part of an interesting, close knit community.

A good fated mate romance, Bear’s Midlife Witch is an interconnected standalone in Meg Ripley’s Fated After Forty series. As my introduction to the series, not bad at all. I love a fated mate romance as much as I do a shifter and/or single parent one, and this one checks a lot of boxes. Including a more mature heroine and hero. I truly enjoyed this book and am looking forward to checking out more of the series and from Meg Ripley.
While I did find Shannon and Drew’s romance a little underdeveloped against the backdrop of everything else happening in the story, the narrative is definitely complex, involving secrets, deceptions, and all kinds of complications that build up the world and community in Carlton a great deal. Still a very satisfying read, and the couples’ chemistry, histories, and personalities make it clear enough that they belong together.

I loved the twists. The slow burn to the romance and the steam.
The storyline was good. Lots of intrigue .Well written.
I also liked that Meg included the other Main characters of the previous books.
Shannon is a strong witch. It comes naturally to her but she hasn't really used her magic for quite some time. She has two children both witch and bear shifter. She has raised them from a very young age. Doing the best she can.
Drew is a bear shifter. He has a young daughter . He's not looking for love. Just working and raising his daughter.
Loved the chemistry when they met. Drew knew she was his true mate, but did not want to pursue anything because (see above)
Loved the journey to their wonderful HEA.

HEA
Standalone, interconnected characters
*over 18 readers only*
Shifter romance, over age 40 characters
3rd person narration
Single Parent

Trigger warnings
Faked death

Shannon moves to town and gets a job as a waitress where Drew is the chef. She takes one look at his tattoos and piercing scars and knows he's hot but not for her. She's a witch, raising two children with magical abilities and needs stability for them. Then there's a confrontation between her and Drew where she accuses him of killing her dead husband and not telling her he's a bear *RIGHT BEFORE THE DEAD HUSBAND WALKS IN*. It all kicks off from there, with an epic battle her kids are involved in and a huge fight with her and Drew and the dead-not-dead husband.
Each of these books follows one couple's journey to love. The characters carry over into other books, with very few typos or trigger issues.

Drew is a bear shifter and Siegal father. He's a chef at the brewery. When Shannon came to town and got a job at the brewery as a waitress, he knew he met his fated mate. Shannon is a witch and a single mom. She meets Drew and the attraction was intense. When Shannon's dead husband appears out of no where with another family, all heck breaks loose and Drew and Shannon will have to face the issues.
I liked all the characters, Drew is protective and stubborn. Shannon is stubborn but caring. This book is whimsical, steamy, tons of drama, a touch of danger, and fated mates.

The narrator, D. C. Cole done a wonderful job with the narration.

We've met Drew in previous books of the Fated Over Forty series. He's a very sweet man, welcoming and easy-going. He meets Shannon, who's just beginning to breath again after years of struggling. I really enjoyed how easy their relationship started, how they bantered, teased each other: their first meeting is delightful! But the past will make a very unwanted comeback, planting doubts and pain that will take time and much introspection to resolve. A light good read, although I find that the path leading to their reunion could have been more elaborate. It left me wanting. Otherwise, lovely story!.

A Love Worth Fighting For -
Neither Drew nor Shannon could explain the pull towards each other or the electric current that passed through them when they touched. However, what they didn’t know was that they were already connected in the past and once this is discovered, it would take them on a wild and bumpy ride, prior to them accepting their fated life together. This is a beautifully written take about betrayal, fated lovers, secrets, tryst issues and the benefits of honest communication. Short novella packed with interesting characters & drama. Widow starting over again, staying with her aunt. Finds job in local bar, massive sparks with the chef. She’s so as keen to get involved with anyone after spending so many years on her own struggling after her husband’s death, but they both find it hard to deny the pull they feel towards each other. Then there’s an unexpected visit from the past threatens to split them up. Enjoyed this, just enough suspense & drama to keep you turning the pages. Didn’t really see the twist coming!.

After the death of her husband and struggling, Shannon moved to town with her kids, to live with her aunt. Needing a job, Shannon interviewed at the restaurant and started right away but not before have a fun yet awkward meetings with Drew in the kitchen.

Good Story with electric chemistry, Shannon and Drew both struggle with the idea of dating, even though they feel the pull. Danger and drama sneak up when Shannon's dead husband shows up. Throw in a few hidden secrets about who they are, and you have a story that you don't want to put down.

Drew Proulx and Shannon Wood have quite a bit in common. At first glance they’re 40-something age bracket, work in food service at the Warehouse where he’s the chef and she’s a waitress, they’re both single parents and are insanely attracted to each other. They’re also keeping secrets from each other. He’s a bear shifter and she’s a witch. But there’s more.

Shannon can’t figure out what about Drew that’s so familiar but it comes out… Drew’s the reason she’s a widow! And he’s a bear shifter! Following Shannon to her next stop, Drew’s angry! Shannon’s a witch and didn’t tell him!

This is the next one in the Fated Over Forty series and it certainly doesn't disappoint. Shannon has moved to Carlton with her two kids and is staying with her aunt, Lenora. She gets a job at The Warehouse and meets Drew, but secrets and the past haunt them and they have to overcome them before they and their families can move on. A beautiful, well written story that had me hooked from beginning to end. I love the characters in this series and look forward to the next one.

After struggling for years windowed mother of two Shannon moves her and her teenage children to Carlton to reconnect with her aunt Lenora. Finding a job at the brewery she has an instant connection with the head chef Drew. What starts off as a beautiful intense attraction suddenly turns cold when a ghost from her past suddenly shows up and ultimatley puts her and her children's powers to the test.
What an unexpected twist that brought this story to life. A brilliant read as always Meg!.

I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review. I really liked the different story lines twisting together into one after diverging. Shannon and Drew are attracted to each other but problems arise when the shared past they had but was unknown was revealed. However what everyone thought happened didn't. I liked Drew's protectiveness and how both Shannon and her son Liam came into their powers. In the end Drew and Shannon are together merging their families. I liked how the community came together to help the stranded mother and her kids.
