R.I.P. Alessi is in way over his head.

It's easier said than done once Vera Monroe takes the stage under a blood-red light. The lure of the mysterious dancer can't be ignored, and they're soon hooked. However, when something sounds too good to be true, it usually is. Rip suspects she’s hiding something and forgetting his basic instincts will put his life at risk.

But sometimes rules are meant to be broken.

Mary Elizabeth was born and raised in Southern California. She is a wife, mother of four beautiful children, and dog tamer to one enthusiastic Pit Bull and a prissy Chihuahua. She's a hairstylist by day but contemporary fiction, new adult author by night.

Mary can often be found finger twirling her hair and chewing on a stick of licorice while writing and rewriting a sentence over and over until it's perfect. She discovered her talent for tale-telling accidentally, but literature is in her chokehold. And she's not letting go until every story is told.

She’s a siren before a tornado. A warning. A vixen.

Kiss of Death is a quick mafia read that’s set in the Underworld Kings world, but is also heavily tied into this author’s Hush series world. I haven’t read that series (there are currently 2 books available), but it was easy enough to follow along with Rip’s story without having read the others.

Like I said this one is quick. It took me a little over two hours (with a lot of distractions) to read it. It’s enjoyable and well written and I’m admittedly obsessed with Rip and Vera and hoping that their story continues in book 3 of Mary’s Hush series because I have a feeling it’s going to be juicy.

Does this book end on a cliffhanger? Mmm, I’d say it’s definitely a “to be continued” ending, so while this short story feels like you get a lot for your read you still are going to want more from this couple. I don’t think that’s a bad thing though, because they are hot and the angst potential is through the roof.

Mary, how dare you? How dare you leave me like this? That ending was satisfying and enfuriating at the same time because how do I gather the patience to wait for the full book on this couple?! GAH!

This was so intense and deliciously intriguing. And RIP was everything my bookish dreams are made of; intense, dangerous, and uber possessive. GAH!

*Thank you to Wildfire Marketing Solutions and the author for an ARC of this title.*

Another fun and tension-filled entry to the Underworld Kings. I haven't read anything by Mary Elizabeth before but she has peeked my interest.

Kiss of Death is about Rip who is newly in power in the Mafia and he plans to make some changes. One night a club he meets Vera, who just draws him in. There is something about her that makes him want to kiss her or destroy her, in equal measure. He knows she must be bad for him but he can't help himself.

What I liked: I thought that both Rip and Vera were very compelling. This is a short tale but I was already rooting for them. They had a crazy chemistry and it was very intense right from the first moment.

What I didn't like: Well, it was a novella length story and as I haven't read any other books in the Hush series, I was a bit confused by everything that was happening. It didn't really feel like an HEA to me and I don't see any info on if there will be more about this couple. I felt like I was left hanging.

This was a steamy little quick story... like... the forest scene... if you know, you know. I would very much be tempted to read more of this couple if the author chose to give it.

Kiss of Death was such a phenomenal short! I can’t wait to see more of this world as well as Vera and Rip!

What did I love:
1. Rip. He just has the mafia vibe I love. Loyalty to the family. Dominant. Yet, he was a bit unique in terms of how he came to be an underboss and his preferences.
2. Vera is a fiesta heroine - free spirited, tough as nails, and a bit insane. Life poured from her soul.
3. The sexual chemistry was so good between these two. It just pulsed between them, and even though this is a novella it was packed with steam.
4. The ending gave a tiny hint for Criminal, and I am going to need it ASAP.

What I didn’t love:
1. Not much. And even the thing I didn’t like was truly because it was a novella. Novella’s are hard for me. The only thing I really wished I had more of was them getting to know each other, more development for them as a couple.

Short. Steamy. A mafia must read. I loved every page.

RIP has just become a made man within the Coppola crime family, as the new Underboss he tests his power by touching something he shouldn't.

Vera Monroe is a dancer that catches everyone's eye at the gentleman's club where she works but they all know the rules...no touching. But when she sets eyes on RIP she wants to break all the rules.

The chemistry between RIP and Vera was scorching hot! These two can set fire to your kindle. There is a bit of a mystery surrounding Vera but we are left with a lot of questions on only speculations on what they may be.

This was the first book I have read by Mary Elizabeth and really enjoyed it, one thing I wasn't to crazy about was the cliffhanger 😐 I will say that this book grabbed me from the very first page and honestly if I hadn't been so invested and really enjoyed the authors writing I don't know if I would seek out the next book....but I will be on the lookout for it.

I would recommend this to anyone that is reading the Underworld Kings Series, the Hush Series, or if you enjoy Steamy Organized Crime Romances.

Happy Reading!!!

Hot and addicting! The author left me wanting more. Vera and Rip are book melting sexiness.

He's the one everyone fears. She's irresistible desire that every man wants when she walks into a room. Together they are fire.

Family first. That's his oath. As a new underboss, he is no longer just the muscle. He has power, but also responsibility and rules. Rip was never good at following rules.

Vera is a sight he can't forget. Seeing her dancing up on that stage for the first time changed everything. Even if he doesn't trust her, it doesn't stop him from wanting her. That girl definitely has secrets.

It's instant chemistry and insane connection. Just a taste of what's to come and I am left wanting more. Lines have already blurred and boundaries will be crossed. Even the mafia have rules that you are expected to follow or face the consequences.

The author writes some of the sexiest characters. She makes it so easy to be consumed by their chemistry. You'll get to catch up with your favorite characters from Tramp and Harlot too. I will be counting down to Criminal's release.

What a yummy, deliciously sexy mafia short set in Mary Elizabeth's addictive Hush world! Just the right combination of consuming chemistry, engaging storyline, and intriguing characters. You'll be ravenous for more- and hungry for the upcoming Criminal!

Kiss of Death brings us Rip, the cold, ruthless, newly minted Coppola mafia underboss, and Vera, the gentlemen's club dancer/Hush escort that captures his attentions. Her allure is undeniable, their chemistry scorching, but Rip has learned to distrust everyone and everything, including the vibrancy of fearless Vera.

This is a thrilling and fast paced novella- but still brimming with suspense and steam. I only wish we had even more- which is usually my novella take. But for such short page real estate Mary Elizabeth sparkles. I can't wait to dive back into more of the Hush world!

Kiss of Death is part of the Underworld King series, a multi-author series of mafia romance. This is the perfect novella to introduce new readers to her Hush series. And for readers who have already read the other books in her series, this is a great intro for the next two characters that Mary is going to bring us.

This review will be very brief as I don't want to accidentally give anything away. Kiss of Death shows the other side, the mafia side, of her Hush series and introduces readers to Rip.

Kiss of Death is filled with lots of tension and steam and will definitely leave readers wanting to know more.

I cannot wait for Mary to bring us Criminal, which is the continuation of this story.

it amazes me how mary elizabeth was able to pack so much heat and emotion and angst into this short novella.

i genuinely love the hush series so much, theres so much stigma with s€x workers which is honestly so sad. i love how mary elizabeth was able to really bring so much scenes that has me genuinely hooked and with so few pages!!

i loved the cameos of talent, lydia, wilder, and nicolai and though i cant wait for nicolai’s book i’m genuinely scared because my heart may not be able to handle it😩 anyways this novella was *chefs kiss* and i wss so happy to be back in the world of hush. criminal can NOT come any sooner😭✋

also i actually finished this the day i got it but i forgot to mark it as read😂

Rip is a self made who has risen to the very top, becoming the underboss and righthand man to the king of mafia, and his word went from a suggestion to law.

Watching Vera perform her pole dancing act, Rip is entranced She calls to me. She’s a siren before a tornado. A warning. A vixen.

Kiss of Death: A Mafia Romance is a novella in the Hush World.
It's a quick read and leaves you wanting more. I do hope we will get more on Rip & Vera's story, I wouldn't say it ended with a cliff hanger, but it leave me hanging with way more questions.

The majority of the story is told from Rip's POV, it's only the last chapter that we get Vera's POV and that has left me very confused, and has managed to make me very covetous for book 3 in the series, Criminal

While part of the Hush World Series, each can be read as a standalone

Kiss of Death by Mary Elizabeth was a dark mafia romance with some intriguing characters, sinful chemistry and addictive suspense. Set in Hush series universe, this novella was equally twisted, heartaching and steamy.

RIP aka Alessio has been just promoted as the underboss of Cosa Nostra in California. He has no heart and no emotions. Till he set his eyes on Vera Monroe in the most exclusive gentlemen's club in Grand Haven. That girl on pole fascinates him and he knows she is a risk.
.
This story is told from mostly RIP's POV. He has not been born in this world but his talent as a ruthless assassin helped him to find a place in Coppoli family. He is coldhearted and calculating but Vera snagged his attention. She is one of the most prized asset of Hush, the exclusive high class escort service run by Lydia Montgomery. She is beautiful. Fierce. Reckless. Full of life and different colours. She isn't afraid of RIP's dark violent side. Rather RIP makes her alive and excited. Like RIP feels possessive like an animal and crazy about her. It was a short yet fulfilling ride.
.
Mary Elizabeth's beautiful writing brought out heartache, suspense and sexy perfection in Kiss of Death.

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

Grand Haven has a new underworld king, and he's celebrating at the local gentlemen's club. But rules are rules. So this is suppose to be a standalone read in the Underworld Kings world. I have read as many books in that series as there are right now and they have all been so amazing. It's not that this book is bad. More so that it was so confusing to me. Then at the end I find out it is a novella set in the Underworld Kings world but a novella for the Hush series that Mary Elizabeth has out. I have not read either of those books and I was kind of lost a little. I don't know that world and there wasn't much of the Underworld Kings world in this book. They went to meet with the Ruin twice if I am remembering right. This is not a complete story if that is what you are expecting. I assume we will get the rest of the story in the next book in the Hush Series. This is a story about Rip and Vera who meet when she dances at the club that he is at. I assume he probably isn't suppose to take her out on a date because she works for the queen of all the ladies in the town and you have to go through her to get one of her girl. I don't know....I was a little confused. So its basically they meet they go on a date and I have to say that I get the feeling that they knew each other before this but he isn't remembering her. I could be wrong. Then the date and the end. So it's quick and I am sure I will read the book abut these two because now I have to know what the heck is actually going on but as far as standing on its own as a story it just fell super short to me.

I was worried to read this book because I didn't care for the last book. And I had a right to be worried because I didn't like this one. I'm not sure what the point of it was?????

RIP just got promoted, great. He's in a strip club and a girl catches his eye, great. He's suspicious of her and she's not afraid of him, great. Second to last chapter he finds out who she is, realizes Nico wants her, and then it ends on a cliffhanger, sigh.

The next book in the series is Talent so I'm not sure how this cliffy will be resolved, but if I'm being honest, I'm not really sure I care that much.
October 15, 2021
This book is not a standalone. I have been reading the books in the Underworld Kings series and this one sounded good. While technically a standalone in the UK series, it seems like a prequel to another a book. No HEA here, just a cliffy. I haven’t read the Hush series but I’m guessing Kiss of Death is leading up to a third book in that series? If you’ve been reading that series, you’ll definitely want to read this one.
Unfortunately, I didn’t really connect to these characters. Rip is kinda a d-bag, if I’m being honest. I still like him, don’t get me wrong. And Vera is a super intriguing character… but I just wasn’t feeling it.

This beginning look into Rip and Vera is amazing! I finished it saying “but I want more now”. The Hush world is the best and I love immersing myself in it. I truly can’t wait to see what happens in Criminal after Nico’s claim in this book. There where moments in this novella that just had my heart racing and dying to see what happened next. You need this whole series in your life! It’s a definite must read!

I need more RIP and Vera! Kiss of Death (Underworld Kings) by Mary Elizabeth is a novella in the Underworld Kings, a multi-author series of mafia romance standalones. Kiss of Death takes place in Mary’s Hush series world. You don’t need to read Tramp (Hush #1) or Harlot (Hush #2) to enjoy this novella. I read and recommended both books! This new scorching hot romance novella is FIRE! I hope we get more of Vera and RIP’s story in Criminal (Hush #3) when it releases this Fall.

3.5 - 4 Stars!

Having read Ms.Elizabeth's Hush books i instantly started looking forward to this story! I was so glad to get into another Underworld Kings installment as well! I really liked this story!

Vera and Rip's journey got my attention! I really liked the chemistry between these two and how I wasn't sure what all was going to happen in their story.

With Kiss of Death, Ms.Elizabeth has created a good read! Looking forward to more from her!

The thrilling Hush saga continues with Kiss of Death. Mary Elizabeth’s writing never ceases to amaze me. So full of life, family and epic love scenes. Kiss of Death was no different. I was able to read it in one fell swoop, because it was seriously hard to put down. The characters just speak to you. It’s as if we’re on a personal level.

I love the mouth, sass and fierceness that we get from Vera. And Rip? Well, his name says it all. Rough, rugged and sexy as sin. With his power, he has the town in the palm of his hand. Vera was a target at first, but now? Now he wants her more than anything. However, finding out that Nico wants Vera puts a wrench in Rip’s plans, although I’m hoping that he will get his way and win her over. Problem is … Rip answers to Nico, and Nico is also a very powerful man. I can’t wait to read the conclusion of this story with Criminal, coming toward the end of the year.

This is book 2.5 in the Hush series I've been reading. I wasn't super excited to it going in but it is a short novella so I thought I'd give it a go. I just can't seem to get in to it!! This is also apparently a crossover to the Underworld kings series - which looks like a massive series each book written by a different author. I don't really have much interest in pursuing that - but it is there. I probably should have just gone straight into book 3 - since I actually enjoyed the couple that it is about when their story was told in book 1, but ugh. I probably won't even read it - I just feel kinda done with this crew. Not really sure what my deal is, LOL!

Kiss of Death is a short novella that tells the story of Rip Alessi and Vera Monroe, with a majority of the chapters told through Rip’s view. Whilst still having a chapter dedicated to Vera’s POV.

Throughout the story we learn about two different things through the alternation of each chapter with what is going on in both worlds. The first being Rip and his personal business/work life, by learning about the Mafia world through his thoughts, opinions and eyes with what he sees. And the other being Rip and his personal relationship with Vera, watching it blossom into much more throughout their time together.
The story definitely ran hot and cold. One minute, serious matters, thoughts and situation/events are going on. Only to flip, blowing hot and cold, seeing as Rip couldn’t make up his mind about Vera. Despite the constant need to give into their sexual desire, which lead to some Red-Hot, Fiery and Steamy AF spice. All of which kept you on your toes in surprise, not knowing what to expect.

Unfortunately I will say there were a few times where I felt the narrative was lacking in substance, given how wordy some of the chapters were with the description.
Also, I was a little disappointed with the length of the story. Mostly because I was expecting a full length story, as opposed to the short novella it ended up being. Something I didn’t realise until I saw how many chapters the book had in total. I just felt had the story been longer, then I would’ve enjoyed it more.

Despite all that, new to me author Mary Elizabeth still managed to win me over with Kiss of Death. And now has me excited for the next book Criminal, given what was said by Nico and how the novella ended.

This is a prequel novella to Mary Elizabeth's Hush world. We see familiar characters like Ridge and Talent, and of course Lydia. RIP Alessio is a childhood friend of the Ridge brothers, and now that they're all in power, and the new generation that's going to change things up, I feel like there's a solid and interesting world ahead in this series.

RIP Alessio is the new underboss of the Coppola family, and he's used to women, violence, and now (even more) power. When he meets dancer Vera at a strip club, he's attracted to her but finds that she has some secrets too. Though this was so short, you're introduced to Rip and Vera and you can't help but want to know more about them. There's a lot of steam in this book, but that's certainly expected as it turns out that Vera is also one of Lydia's girls. There's a lot more to her backstory though, and this short prequel only gives you a taste of it. I'm totally interested in knowing WHY Vera is working for Lydia, if she's the property that the Cisneros family want back, and what's going to happen between her and Rip. Rip is a dangerous man, and I can't wait to see him exercise his power in this new underworld.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Kiss of Death was like my own wet dream. This book only had 7 chapters but Mary Elizabeth has created my new obsession. I am so in love with Rip and Vera. This book was the absolute perfect taste to have me completely addicted to this world.
Rip has just taken the oath to become the new underboss to the Coppola family. In the mafia, family and money are the only things that matter. For the most part, women aren't the priority unless they're making big money. Vera is the new stripper at the club Rip and his crew frequent. Seeing her dance immediately entrances him. Her spirit is wild and reckless. She reminded me so much of myself when I was younger, even the dancing part. Rip knows he should kill her because she's obviously trouble but obsession is a tough chain to loosen from one's mind. I will be diving into the Hush series asap because that series is all about this world and the dynamic characters. I desperately crave more from this amazing world! Again, this book is only seven chapters and I'm this obsessed? This author just put herself on my favorite authors list. This is my honest opinion, freely given.

The only flaw this entire story had was that it’s not long enough. To be fair that’s how I’ve felt about the previous stories in this world, but with this one only being a novella that feeling is even stronger. How does someone as ruthless and cold as Rip Alessi make me feel so charmed and secure in his world? His world is scary and intense and just like Vera, I feel like I want to be pulled into it all. Vera’s character is a classic Hush heroine. Mary Elizabeth writes these female characters who walk into a mans world in red bottom heels and absolutely dominates it. The world of Hush is quite possibly my favorite fiction world to be in and even though this story was short, it was still everything I needed. It reminds you that 1. Lydia Montgomery is a QUEEN, 2. Life can be fun even when it’s scary, and 3. That girls run the world. I am beyond excited for more of it all when Criminal comes out.

This is a super steamy, mafia story (short) that was very entertaining.
It takes place in the author’s Hush series (which I have read so I was excited about that.)
Rip and Vera are strong characters, together they are insanely combustible!
Both are pretty unique characters, I like Rip’s backstory.
It’s a quick glimpse into their meeting, immediate attraction and a look into the mafia and club world they live in.
I loved that he was instantly intrigued by her when he saw her dancing in the club. Insta lust/love isn’t usually a favorite of mine, but it worked in this story.
I think the author writes hot, complicated characters so well.
I hope they are in future books by the author. Both are compelling characters and together they are so crazy hot!
Short, sexy and entertaining!

Kiss of Death is an amazing mafia novella that left me wanting more, Mrs. Mary Elizabeth always knows how to create the darkest, most intense and raw stories and this is no exception, this novella is addictive from beginning to end, I love Rip and Vera.

Rip and Vera's connection is instantaneous, their scenes intense and passionate, Rip is madly attracted to Vera, but he doesn't trust her, she definitely keeps secrets, and as a new underboss in the Coppola crime family he has to be very careful.

Gahh, this novel is too short for my taste, I need more of them. And I can't wait for Criminal !!

Kiss Of Death is live, and all You need to do, is one click this baby right now!!!!
.
This book is a short novella, but Mary delivers alllllll the things that will blown Your mind away. I loved the steam, emotional part and... what is the best thing in the entire world- this story also connect with one of my fave books - Hush Series.
.
I couldn't put this novella down, not only because the story line was SO addictive, but also because, I feel obsessed with Vera and Her strong character. Just like Lydia and Camilla, she is a woman, that cannot be missed. She knows what she wants, and she takes it without hesitation. She is imperfectly perfect and RIP, as a hero made only for her... They might be matched by events, that are not easy, BUT! They are what they are - Explosive Couple, that will. shake Your world upside down.

This was a short quick read that I liked. Rip, the cold, ruthless, new Coppola mafia underboss. Vera is a dancer at a gentlemen's club she is also an escort that captures his attentions. They also had some hot chemistry but Rip has learned to distrust everyone and everything including Vera. This was a pretty good read and my first time reading this author. This book was part of the Underworld Kings. This book was well written with no errors in grammar or spelling. I am looking forward to reading more from this author.

While I wouldn't say I fell in love with the 2 mc's Vera Monroe and RIP Alessi there was definitely something there like a lil taste to have me to keep turning the pages of this novella. RIP has recently been promoted to a made man for the Coppola family and his men are celebrating at a strip club when he see's her...Vera under a red light on stage and they can't take their eyes off of each other as they share a chemistry that lights up the room, but he suspects she's keeping something from him just what it is you'll need to grab it and find out. While it is a quick read as it's part of the Underworld Kings series I know we haven't seen the last of them.
