PsyCop #1

Among the Living

Rate this book
Victor Bayne, the psychic half of a PsyCop team, is a gay medium who’s more concerned with flying under the radar than in making waves.

He hooks up with handsome Jacob Marks, a non-psychic (or “Stiff”) from an adjacent precinct at his ex-partner’s retirement party and it seems like his dubious luck has taken a turn for the better. But then a serial killer surfaces who can change his appearance to match any witness’ idea of the world’s hottest guy.

Solving murders is a snap when you can ask the victims whodunit, but this killer’s not leaving any spirits behind.

Among the Living is told from the perspective of Victor Bayne, a cop in Chicago’s Paranormal Investigation Unit. He is a Class 5 medium, with the ability to communicate with the dead. At the start of the story, Victor is attending a retirement party for his former partner, Maurice. He nearly crashes head first into Detective Jacob Marks, who eventually becomes his lover, and gets called in to investigate a very unusual homicide.

Victor is assisted by his new partner, Lisa Gutierrez, a cop who is not quite what she appears to be, Jacob, and his partner, Carolyn, a psychic investigator who is able to detect lies.

This is a very well-written, fun, fast-paced and suspenseful story that is the first in a series. Victor is not very comfortable conversing with the dead and takes pills to suppress his abilities. He is flawed, lacks self-esteem, hates shopping for clothes and is self-centered. Jacob is gorgeous, sexy, a sharp dresser, and hot for Victor. These two very different guys made a perfect pair, and I enjoyed every moment with them as they successfully solve a series of homicides and develop a relationship.

There are a few well-written sex scenes, but Among the Living is not a traditional romance where the main focus is on the physical and emotional relationship. Jacob and Vic are busy guys...there are crimes to solve and wayward spirits to deal with, but they do make time for love.

I am very very excited about this series. I love the character of Vic and the psycop world that Jordan Castillo Price created. This review won't be very long because I only have generalized gushy, lovey stuff to say about this series thus far. My main complaint is that I wish the book was longer. I could have used another 100 pages. I'm going to keep reading each book in the series because this first book just left me wanting more!

Writing tidbit: I was initially going to make Vic more dramatically paranormal. First idea was he could be a genie who wasn't allowed to do wishes for himself. Then, a half-demon. But I found the more "normal" I made him (if you could call him that), the more the story came alive.

I opened my eyes again to keep myself with Marks, anchored in the present, among the living.

"Stop it, Marks. You're killing me."
He sat back on his heels, still fully clothed, and licked his lips. "Why don't you call me Jacob?" he suggested.

"New partner lined up yet?"
I wondered if "partner" was also supposed to be flirtatious, as in "sexual partner." But even my Auracel-addled mind figured that'd be a pretty far stretch.

 photo 974fc368-80ca-41aa-abcf-40cf92f1ebc6_zpsecaa9d7e.png

Victor Bayne is a psychic medium and part of the PsyCop unit solving murders.

A pair of opposites forms a Paranormal Investigation Unit. The Psychs--psychic cops--do the psychic stuff, just like you'd expect. And the Stiffs--look, I didn't name 'em--are oblivious to any psychic interference a sixth-sensory gifted criminal might throw out there.

Vic is at his soon-to-be-ex partner's home, celebrating Maurice's retirement when he's on the lookout for the bathroom and runs into hotshot Detective Jacob Marks, the golden child of the Twelfth Precinct Sex Crimes Unit.

"So," Marks said, deftly swerving his bulging pecs around my shoulder as he maneuvered past me. I stood there gaping and trying not to choke. "Lost your stiff."
A comment about the crassness of calling Maurice a Stiff stuck somewhere around the last Auracel, as I realized that Marks not only knew who I was and what I did, but that he seemed to be flirting with me. Detective Marks--queer? Who knew? And besides, he was a Stiff, too.

Baba drools a little bit now because that dude is sexy as sin! Jacob is big with a ripped body, dark eyes and close-cropped dark hair, a neat goatee and olive skin. As a nice bonus, he sure knows how to choose the right clothes that emphasize his delectable body. It's easy for him to do the switch from a classy and expensive suit to cool jeans, a sexy T-shirt and a leather jacket. Ok, back to the story before I get lost here.

Vic and Jacob did not waste any time in that tiny bathroom and got down to business by jacking each other off. I must admit that I didn't know if I should be annoyed or amused but I got stuck with the latter. I was actually hoping for some kind of build up when I started Among the Living, but I got over my irritation fast enough. I couldn't help and smile all the time. It's fascinating to try and keep up with Vic's quick mind and Jacob took care of my need to ogle at something someone scrumptious. As many of you know I'm so not into that PNR stuff and I'd be lying if I said I didn't need a little bit of time to get used to that part of the story. The soul-sucker villain wasn't quite my cup of tea. Oh well, what did interest me the most are Vic and Jacob anyway and I'm happy that I can have my fill in the near future.

There is something to say about reading bad books. Don't throw any rotten tomatoes at me now because I'm not talking about the PsyCop series. As a matter of fact, without having read two books in a row that didn't appeal to me, I would not have jumped on Vic and Jacob. I did browse Amazon and my GR shelves for an hour and had a hard time to decide what to read. Eventually though these two guys did end my book funk and I'm happy that I had such a great start to my new reading year.

Jordan's writing is great and kept me glued to the pages. Vic is totally endearing, witty and hilarious and Jacob's hot physique is the icing on the cake. Boy, I can't wait to see what's going to happen when they actually do the deed because what I've witnessed so far was extremely sexy and enticing, i.e. the scene against the window. I'm really looking forward to getting to know these two MCs better because I WANT more background information.

I'm back among the living. My book funk is over.

Recommended read.

So each cop is paired with some sort of psychic cop. Sounds pretty fun, huh? Well, it is!
Plus, sexy gay men getting lucky.
The only problem with this book? Too short. Much like this review. Take that for irony!

I saw many people complaining about the lack of romance in this story and I disagree with them. 😌 I do think this is a very interesting and engaging mystery/thriller story about a psychic detective with splash of romance. This is a very short novella under 100 pages and there’s no way that author could explore everything and construct a well-established relationship while trying to solve a mystery murder. 🙃 And please remember that this is only the very first book in a “9 books” series and I believe we will see the relationship growth between Bayne and Marks. 😉 My only complaint with the novella is the very first scene where Bayne and Marks first hooked up. It seemed very out of the blue. But I guess we will see why Marks decided to suddenly pursue Bayne after many years in the coming books. Hopefully! 😁

I was surprised by how interesting and mystical the book is. I was hooked. I just couldn’t guess who or what the murderer is and it was very intriguing listening how these detectives worked together to solve the mystery. 👍 And I think Marks’ overprotectiveness towards Bayne is sweet and charming. An all- round American sweetheart boyfriend! 😍 We would have to wait and see whether he’ll be able to penetrate somewhat preserved Bayne’s heart or not in the coming books. Gomez Pugh did an excellent job narrating this story. 👏 He did distinct voices for all characters and his voice was clear and soothing. All the qualities I look for in a great narrator. 😊 I think I’m definitely hooked with the series. I’m very happy that this story is a complete episode rather than ending up as a cliffhanger. I think it’s easier for readers to explore each story since it would be like watching a mystery thriller series. Overall, Jordan Castillo Price did an excellent job writing this mystery shortie and Gomez Pugh also did a stellar job narrating this one. ❤️ I just hope they won’t change the narrator. 😌

I’m so mad at myself!

Why, WHY, did I wait this long to start this series?!

If a book could tick off every checkbox of what I find entertaining in a read, “Among the Living” does just that.

Cops. Check
Hot cops. Check
Hot cops with guns. Check
Quirky anti-hero MC. Check
Something scary. Check
Something funny. Check
Something sweet. Check
Makes fun of itself. Check.
Great writing. Check.
Potential for more (series). Check

I love, love, LOVE VICTOR BAYNE!!!! (and I honestly have no idea why) He hears dead people talking, and is sloppy, and is unsure of himself, and is traumatized, and drugs himself up to shut out the voices...he's a hot mess. But there's something just COOL about him (<-I realize I sound like uber-dork…but he IS…SO COOL!)

In Vic’s shadow, Jacob Marks is a bit on the bland side. BUT, I think there’s some potential there. And his crush on Victor is adorable (predictably, I’m the sucker that awwww’d at his response to Victor’s jealousy of the incubus). I like this pairing better than Adrien/Jake, better than Tony/Mac, better than Jory/Sam…better than any of the other wimpy-weird-dude/hot-alpha-cop couple out there…and that’s saying a lot for me.

Just the concept of the PsyCop is FUN...and the different "gifts" that each of them has ("si/no"...I want this!) is clever. Ok, so the whole white ball of light thing kind of threw me…but even Victor makes fun of it a bit when he’s doing it…so I can live with that.

Strong characters, original storyline, amazing writing...and so much more to inhale! As Jay-Z would say..."on to the next one..."

Excellent. I think one of the pleasures of JCP's work is her sense of proportion. These stories have an unerring balance between the logical and the paranormal, the humorous and the dramatic, the romantic and the hot and sexy. This series gives us Victor Bayne, the most human, and in some ways ordinary, powerful psychic you could hope to meet. Vic sees ghosts, speaks to them, figures out who killed them, sometimes convinces them to pass on, and he's a cop, but that doesn't make him either confident or commanding. Vic's a bit of a hot mess. After spending his formative years in a "training" facility for psychics that was more experimental lab, he still has a limited grasp on the nuances of his abilities. He also has a boatload of baggage, an addiction to Psy-blocking drugs, and a drive for justice and compassion that push him beyond his limits.

As the series opens, he's moved into a new law enforcement arm - the PsyCops - where a non-psychic "Stiff" is paired with each psychic, for stability and safety. At his ex-partner's retirement party, he hooks up with tall, dark, and handsome Jacob, another Stiff, and then ends up partnered with him. Their relationship, which begins with sex, will continue to build and unfold throughout the series.

Solving a serial killer case is tough, even with the help of ghosts, when you have a killer whose appearance changes, and who doesn't leave spirits behind. Figuring out a balancing act between personal attraction and professional compatibility is almost harder. This book has both intriguing plot and world-building, and the beginnings of what will be a wonderful relationship to watch unfold.

Vic has a dark sense of humor, and a self-deprecating realness that sits alongside his powerful (and yet somewhat uncharted) talent. He's one of my favorite characters (and voice perfectly by Gomez Pugh, if you like audio.) There are a bunch of short stories too (many brought together in a recent collection, but beware of spoilering yourself reading ahead in the shorts.) If you like paranormal, fallible characters who learn and grow and change, a lot of plot and some heat that's not the main focus— try this series. I finished the second before even taking time off to review the first. And am still engaged with this series as book 13 releases. Highly recommended.

I mostly loved this. My one complaint would be about how Vic and Jacob’s relationship starts. Between there being no build up to it and not having Jacob’s pov, I had a hard time feeling the chemistry between these two. Since both MCs are very likeable, I’m hoping that will change as I continue with the series. I’m very much looking forward to more crazy, spooky cases.

You know that moment when you read the first book in a series, and you do a little happy dance because you just discovered something amazing?

I'm so there right now. The only thing better than reading this book was the realization that there is a whole series ready and waiting for me :)

It was a stupid idea anyway, trying to scare off a demon by putting him in a bubble like Glenda the Good Witch. What I needed was to a house to drop on him.
It is rare for a book to hook me as quickly as this one did. Perhaps it was the anticipation... I've been ready and willing to read the PsyCop series for ages, but you know how out of control a TBR can become. I'm so glad I finally picked up these books!

The paranormal aspects were rooted in a world so well-crafted and believable, I think even those readers who aren't fans of fantasy could easily find themselves enthralled by this series.

There was a sweet connection between the MCs,
...but no insta-love.
We were treated to copious amounts of incredibly hot sex,
...but the plot took center stage.

Everything was perfectly balanced to create an amazing story. I will absolutely be continuing this series.

Victor Bayne
I was a fifth-level medium. That was almost as high as you could go [...] So I could hear, and sometimes see, the dead. And they seemed to sense it and be sure they talked my ear off. Thing was, they never knew shit.
Medium, Introvert, & Charmingly Neurotic.

The story was told from the sole POV of Victor, and I quickly fell for his character. Vic talks to dead people, or rather, dead people talk to him... Whether he wants them to or not. Turns out ghosts are regular chatterboxes when they come across a human that can hear them.

Vic's talents have made him an indispensable homicide investigator as the psychic half of a PsyCop team. Unfortunately, his partner, Maurice, has just retired from the force, and Vic finds himself faced with the prospect of being paired up with a new 'stiff' i.e. a detective without psychic abilities.

Victor Bayne might be a gifted psychic, but he's just about hopeless in every other area in life. He's a walking calamity; he has no friends, no family, no fashion sense, and he has a habit of popping pills to keep the ghosts quiet.

He's awkward... Adorably awkward... He knows it will be a challenge to cultivate a working relationship with a new partner. He doesn't make friends, can barely make living acquaintances, and lovers? Ha!

This explains why he is completely blindsided when he winds up on the receiving end of a gorgeous detective's attention.

Jacob Marks
He knows who I am. And he knows what I do. And he's willing to jack me off anyway.
Detective, Golden Boy, & Surprisingly Adorable.

Jacob is the 'stiff' in a PsyCop partnership in a completely separate precinct from Vic. He's a star detective working with his partner Carolyn - a human polygraph.

When Jacob runs into Vic at Maurice's retirement party, there's a whole lot of heat between the two. Their brief hookup in the bathroom ends with a knock on the door - It's the Sergeant - before either man can process what just happened between them, it's back to work.

There's a murder to solve...

When a serial killer strikes on the border of two Chicago precincts, Vic and Jacob wind up working the case together... Awesomeness ensues...

Looking back at the page count - a brief 89ish pages - I can hardly believe Jordan Castillo Price managed to pack so much into this story. It didn't feel rushed, and not a word was wasted. The pacing was perfection.

The story flowed beautifully - a combination of detective work, sex, suspense, paranormal, and the perfect amount of humor.

The world-building was brilliant, the characters were well crafted, but it was definitely the humor that hooked me.

I'll always be a sucker for a book that can make me smile and laugh.

I really hate threesomes when one of the participants is dead.
I could have plucked a dozen little quips like that to illustrate the quirky humor that saturates the book.

This is the kind of story that leaves you smiling, satisfied, yet excited for more!

I'm off to read the next book!

It's there anything like the Psycop series? So original and enthralling, it caught my attention from the very first page, just snap! Victor is such an interesting person, he can't be fitted into a neat category, is he a white knight or an antihero? He would say, nothing like that, he's just trying to live his life and deal with his admittedly scary talent and help people as well as he can. He doesn't consider himself particularly courageous or special, especially since his talent brings him so much grief, and being a cop and gay definitely brings it's own set of obstacles. And when you add the amazingly sexy and practically perfect Jacob Marks to the equation, Victor Bayne has a lot on his plate. This book is engaging, and hair raising, with Vic's point of view planting the reader right smack into the scary life he leads, as a medium. I enjoyed the heck out of this, and the steamy scenes are raw and passionate, which always makes me happy. Vic is now firmly planted in the book boyfriend library.

As I said in an update, thanks to the not so great reviews of book eight for making me look at other reviews for this series and give it a try! Funny how that worked out. 🤷🏻‍♀️😂

I’m very late to the party. So anything I have to say has been said a thousand times and said better. But this was fun! Paranormal is a specific mood for me. So I suppose the mood was right. I don’t know that I’ll binge all of them in a row. It depends on that mood. But my library does seem to have most of them and I’m for sure going to read book two next at least.

Vic was such a funny character. Kind of prickly. Kind of quirky. I liked him pretty much immediately. And related to how he continued to spill stuff on himself. Him going to SaverPlus for new blazers cracked me up. Jacob I liked right away too. I found him to be the perfect match for Vic and I loved how flustered he made Vic. 🤣 I look forward to seeing how that relationship will develop. It’s very much at the lust phase right now but I didn’t feel like it was insta-love or anything. More they are kind of feeling each other out.

**Spoiler in paragraph below. But most have read this so it doesn’t matter.**

The mystery really held my interest too. An incubus that makes the person or witness see them as the most attractive person they can imagine? So that no one person is seeing the same guy? You just know I’d be describing the victim going off with David Tennant. 😂 The side characters were also great which is always a plus. If I’m going to invest in a long series, I need that.

So yeah. A promising start!

Vic is my everything and Gomez Pugh (the narrator) is perfection.

And I'm upping this from 4 to 5 stars. When you've reread/listened to a book 2, 3 or, perhaps, 10 times, it's a 5 star read, friends.

[WARNING: The following may be a bit of a spoiler if you've never read the series or, you know, a romance.]

Every time I read or listen to any book in this series I find something new to love. In this one it occurred to me for the first time exactly why Vic allows himself to fall so in love with Jacob. Vic may have a low opinion of his own attractiveness but I don't, and while I do think that there are a lot of men out there who'd be freaked out by his abilities, there are a lot who wouldn't be, or who'd at least go along with it because they loved Vic. To them it'd be like a bad habit they had to accept. But that the thing, Jacob doesn't JUST love Vic, he truly believes in his abilities.

JCP gives a big hint about that in Among the Living, the first book in her Psycop series. I was listening to the audio, so I didn't mark where it happened, but Jacob and Vic have a conversation about what Vic needs in a non-psychic partner. (If you haven't read this series, psychics are always paired with "Stiffs" or non-psychic partners.) Vic thinks about his old partner Maurice and what he did for him--which is that he believed Vic saw ghosts. When Vic stood there and it looked like he was talking to the air or himself, he truly believed that Vic was conversing with the dead.

And that's one reason Vic and Jacob's relationship will work. When Vic says there are no ghosts in his apartment, Jacob believes him unquestioningly. When other plotty stuff comes up in later books, Jacob simply believes him.

It makes me so happy for Vic. He truly deserves that kind of love.

PsyCop?
I stumbled in blind, having no clue what exactly this was.
Cops? Yeahhh, I’m a sucker for a man in uniform packing heat, and with the rabid followers I figured what the hell, let’s see what the fuss is all about.
Less than 100 pages and its quite clear why everywhere I look friends are inhaling and raving about this series.
As my girl Abby would say, “PsyCops is more addicting that pistachios.” What? Seriously do you know anyone that has only read the first one?
No way. Not possible. It’s that good.

So this is the deal….
There is a detective with psychic powers and then you add a stiff (non-psychic partner) and boom—you have yourself a PsyCop team.

Victor Bayne
I think he is simply adorable! It’s funny that I immediately link him to sweet, lovable and endearing, since he is a bit of a junkie. Yet for some reason, I just can’t help but love him. He’s insecure, shy and a bit of slob; but some how he turns it all into appeal.
He is just so ordinary despite the fact that he is anything but.
The sixth sense gift Victor possesses is most definitely a curse to him. He wants nothing more than to disappear into the shadows, yet sadly for him the shadows hold all sorts of boogie monsters and frightening freaks. He has nowhere to hide, nowhere to run, and does his best to numbly slog along.

Jacob Marks
Love at first sight. *sigh* He's a tall, dark drink of handsome, however these characteristics take the back seat to his heart. When he wants something, he gets it. When he’s after someone, he catches them. When he loves somebody, he loves them like they have never been loved before. Sexy, intimidating and he sucks the air out of the room with one step inside. I gotta say, I’m a bit jealous Vic, but alas he and I would never have worked out…mainly because I’ve got girly bits, but my own sharp shooter would never have allowed it. ;)

If anyone deserves to be worshiped I believe it is Vic.
His past pulsates with pain, he is scrabbling to stay afloat in the present and his future is murky. And I am completely vested to see where his future leads.
I thought Maurice was fabulous and I liked his new partner Lisa as well. What a bizarre talent she has!
Captivating world, brilliant characters and fantastic writing….
what more could you ask for?
More? Oh, well then you are in luck, for this is just the beginning.
Hop on the crazy-ghost-filled train with me, I have a premonition it’s going to be an unforgettable ride!

4.5 Stars!

Picked this up as a freebie (thanks Line) and it was really good. I don't read a lot of paranormal but sometimes want something different.

Nice mix of romance and suspense. I am really intrigued by Jacob and Vic. Despite this one being short, there was some nice steam. And good banter.

I'm definitely intrigued and plan to continue on with the series.

I wonder if I would have loved it more if I had read it instead of listening to the audioversion...

Gordon Pugh's narration itself was a bit flat and monotone and I had to struggle not to be miles away, needless to say getting tired while driving is not the best idea ever. What he did great, though, was giving Jacob a sexy as hell voice and that was to die for.

The story was okay for me, albeit nothing to write home about. This is the first in a series, so I guess the worldbuilding will develop over time, but since it was the first book I would have enjoyed more explanations as an introduction into this world. I loved Vic's dry and sometimes sarcastic humor, though.

Now that was pretty darn good! I enjoyed the premise and the world building.

Two drawbacks for me and my tastes:
1. It's short. A novella I'd say. I find it very difficult to really immerse myself in a short story.
2. Both MCs seemed older. 40's, 50's ? I'm not sure since it wasn't really stated. My preference is for younger characters.

But, I don't know... I really liked the world created here and I think I might try more in this series.

I have seen this series recommended a lot, and since it went on KU this month, I figured it was time to give it a shot. The premise sounded neat, and a good urban fantasy (with romance subplot) is a fun read.

Unfortunately, this ended up very much not working for me, for several reasons.

The writing

This book being from 2006, I was prepared to give it some leeway on old timey attitudes and such, but it ended up being too much for me to want to deal with. Slurs, misogyny, all around weird attitudes…it built up to an untenable level. I guess I’d have hoped, since the author is still continuing this series(!), they could have doubled back to remove some of the obvious slurs? Maybe?

In addition to that weirdness, the two victims that Bayne visited were promptly declared queer for the most bizarre reasons. Check these quotes:

I then noticed that Blakewood had a little collection of miniature furniture with Scotty dogs painted on it, arranged on a semicircular shelf in the corner. Yeah. He was queer.

Having miniature dog figurines is gay. ???

when it occurred to me that a dead queer might very well be hanging out near the fridge.

Why do queer dudes hang out by fridges

Ryan Carson was a junior architect at a high-priced firm that dealt with gigantic corporate clients. His duplex was probably worth a cool half-mil, and the interior looked like a great big Ikea display. Queer.

IKEA is queer. ??????????????

These ones I cannot chalk up to old 2006 attitudes, because they do not make sense at all. What is this even trying to say?!

There’s other nonsensical statements peppered in, I just could not follow them or figure out what they were trying to say. (see my highlights)

Characters

I found the characters to be very flat. I know it’s early in the book, but I expect something, at least for the POV character. Bayne just sort of floats through life declaring furniture gay, and judging women’s suits. Marks has no personality yet, but he hasn’t been on page much except to pill search Baynes mouth with his tongue. Their connection is non existent to me, even during their oddly timed bathroom hookup.

Communication??

I was frequently lost on logical connections during conversations. Did I miss a step? The characters react in ways that don’t make sense to me, like in this snippet, where Marks just asked Bayne if he needed any particular type of support at the crime scene:

“General backup is fine,” I said. Marks gave me a withering look. I wasn’t trying to be cagey. It just came out that way.

…what? That’s not cagey at all. Why is he mad?

Overall, while this book is a favorite of many, it very much did not work for me. The premise sounded neat, but I am not willing to ford through the weirdness to find out if it gets better. There’s better urban fantasy out there I will enjoy.

3 1/2 Stars - A great start - I'm convinced!!

Book #1

The first novella in the PsyCop paranormal crime series about Victor Bayne, the psychic half a PsyCop team (a gay medium) and the tough gorgeous (quite sexy) cop Jacob Marks.

***********************************************************

I listened to the audiobooks (this one 3 hrs) narrated in a perfect way —for me— by Gomez Pugh.

I started these books on a vacation trip and finished this first one next to two weeks ago. I more or less listened to both of the first two in one go. — The second one was even better (#2 - Criss Cross (4 stars)).

It's a little too late for a proper review now, so short and sweet:

I LIKE - just to put on the play button for part two immediately

Wow, excellent start! I really enjoyed Victor and am already in love with big-softy Jacob and the whole idea of the Psychic Cops is incredibly fascinating. One small issue with this book in particular is that the actual murder case they worked on didn't hold much interest for me. But with so many books in this series, there are many, many more to come, so I'm not at all worried.

I'm moving on to the next book! I plan to do a more comprehensive review of the characters when I am finished with the series, unless I end up losing interest, like I did with the Matter of Time series.

Big fun! Thanks for your comments of encouragement GR buddies!

AHHH!!! So good but so short! I can’t believe I waited so long to start this series — I added it back in 2014 — but there’s more to read now, so I’m super-happy!!! 😍

This is just my kind of series — spooky, sexy, fast-paced, with a quirky, self-depreciating MC and his smokin’ hot love interest. Vic and Jacob, oh my goodness…

LOVED IT, want more, NOW!

3,5 stars

Second read May 2022 (although I did try quite a few times before, but never made it to the end)

I still agree that the scenario and the characters are intriguing, and the plot itself really caught my attention, but there is no discernable relationship development, no romance as such.
Things between Victor and Jacob simply happen 'on the side'.
Which, ultimately, left me pretty unsatisfied. As did the shortness of the book. So downgraded to 3,5 stars from 4.

original review

This is a fab start to this series.

The set up is intriguing - psychic policemen working along the work force to solve crimes. Drugs that have been developed to keep them 'untroubled' by paranormal beings outside work, scary creatures that threaten humanity (if you have watched the TV show 'Grimm' you kind of know what I mean.)

I really liked Vic. Although a top medium he is so insecure about himself, who he is and how anyone can accept him for himself, it is painful. And he is near his forties. I wanted to know more about him. A lot more!
Jacob has a thing for Vic right from the beginning, but I have no idea why. The guys definitely have a connection, but (so far - and there is hope for more!) I never found out why Jacob is so much into Vic.

Saying that - I liked these two, and I liked them together. But I felt that the book was too short to really give me all the answer I wanted.

Is that something we are going to find out in the course of the series? Hope so!

Quick review. First; I am not one to read paranormal books. I am a self proclaimed lazy reader and do not want to spend time on the world building. That being said, HOLYMOTHERFUCKINGSHITBALLS I am in love with this story! It was nothing like I expected. I was so easy to settle into, inside Vic's head and what was going on both inside and out of it. It was so veray easy for me to fall in love with Jacob. How could I not? That man turned me into a huge pile of goo more than once but those last lines of the book were just so damn swoony. Ugh.

The paranormal aspect is intriguing and the whole thing is just written so well. The medium aspect is something I have watched on TV before, when I watched TV, so it was fun to see the odd bits and hookers that show up nagging Vic when he doesn't need it. Talk to the hand. I have no idea where any of this story will go. If Vic will get to work with Jacob again or not but those two are smoking together.

~I put this on my list of new authors I haven't read.
~I put this on my list to challenge myself to read outside my comfort zone. I put this on my list hoping that I would at least be able to "get" what all the fuss was about.
~I put this on my list after many others but it was the right time for me and I am hooked.

Oh so very hooked.

I’m addicted! And hell…a bit in love too. Among the Living by Jordan Castillo Price blends day to day hassles and routine with the creeps and chills of the paranormal. A story and world that had me smiling one minute and shivering the next.

”Nothingness had never been so scary.”

Victor Bayne is a PsyCop with the ability to see and communicate with the dead whether he feels up for chatting or not. The dead drop by his apartment, haunt his days & nights and every move. Hell he can even conjure up the spirit of a dead goldfish! Detective Bayne investigates and solves crimes by talking to the victims. *shiver* Think about that for a minute. He interviews people just murdered. The creeps were so matter of fact here, but whenever I stopped to think about the crime scenes, emotions, and souls---the shivers would dance up and down my spine! Ordinary errands were filled with ghosts in store aisles, highways littered with spirits, or echoes of the dead at parties. Voices, feelings, and sights followed Victor around nonstop. How can he keep it all straight? Alive or dead? How does one stay alive inside when he hears more from the dead than the living?

Then we meet Detective Jacob Marks! He’ll keep the heat and heart pumping!

”He was a big, strapping guy with a deep voice and a piercing gaze that could nail you to the wall.”

Jacob and Victor end up working a serial killer case together. A killer that leaves no traces or souls behind. Can Victor and Jacob solve the crime before another victim is taken? Will Victor ever buy a suit that fits? And will Victor find a partner to work and play with? Haha….You are going to have to dive in to find out!

My only disappointment with this little gem was the Big Bad showdown. That’s it? That's all you've got? Haha…A little anti-climactic. But I got over it in a hurry because the killer didn’t hold my heart. It was all about Victor. He got under my skin in such a quiet way. A very addictive, fascinating mix of power and sadness. I can’t get a handle on him. So lonely and unsure of himself. The dead show more emotion than he does at times. What’s going on in his head and heart? I need more! I need to know.

A quick read and introduction to this world that had me diving for the BUY button. More! More please.
