I thought we as a society are over these kind of stories.
Not a single woman in their right minds would be enjoying these kind of plots right?

this book basically consists of Takkun trying to rape our main character (after she clearly said that she did not give her consent) and this is not the type of book i want to read in 2022, thank you very much.

My eyes are burning

Can I kick Takkun's face? This is hateful, detestable, and abominable!! Gawd, I hated the guy's guts!! You don't own women, just because you're an eligible bachelor!! This is sexual exploitation—no, this is rape!! You just pounce and pounce like a wild tiger on the poor homeless, jobless Yae. I know it's fake marriage... but man! You don't do that. Man, I was mostly thinking of Yor and Loid Forger's fake marriage and saw this, and was like "Ooh, it's the whole concept. I need to see this!" But no. I'm so disappointed!! I don't usually read josei and then I saw this... this just strengthens my resolve to not read another. So, adios. I won't read the next volume.

Or maybe I will to see how far this goes...

Sendo Yae is a 29-year-old woman who just lost her home and her job within the span of a few days. In spite of this misfortune, she ends up meeting her childhood friend Natsume Takumi who is now a successful architect and therefore lives a comfortable life. In exchange for free accommodation, Takumi asks Yae to act as his fake wife.

I was curious about this one since I’m a sucker for the fake relationship/marriage of convenience trope and was excited since I hate the last one I’ve read (Yes, I’m talking about you Happy Marriage!). I have yet to find a manga with this trope that I like. Unfortunately, this one wasn’t for me.

First, I’m not a big fan of the art. I find the character design of Takumi weird, but it didn’t stop me from reading the rest. The fact that Yae and Takumi are childhood friends makes the relationship a little bit less awkward than if they were perfect strangers but still, the personalities of the characters are way too cliché for me. Takumi is your handsome, rich and sexy guy while Yae is your naïve and innocent woman. I just wish that the author adds something a little bit more original to the storyline rather than doing something that has already been done.

I’ll read the second and third volumes because I wonder if it’s just the first volume or if the storyline improves in the next installments.

this manga was very uncomfortable to read, we are essentially thrown into the story as the reader with no buildup or backstory to the main couple’s meeting and no true semblance of who yae is. then we’re introduced to this creep takkun who was apparently friends with yae when they were kids but we’re ever only told this never shown. these two don’t share any inside jokes, memories or even treat each other with familiarity. this manga could’ve been so cute if they over hauled takkun’s rapey tendencies and gave him a personality besides smirking and being a rich asshole.

There are a number of sexual advances he makes in this book while yae has told him to stop or no and he continues anyway only really stopping if his phone rings or something. It’s crazy how this man says she was his first love because i could’ve saw that being used in a normal story with a normal ml who is cold within the fake marriage with yae bc he did have feelings for her once upon a time and she isn’t like the girls he’s been with as an adult bc she knew him when he wasn’t a wealthy architect. soooo many missed opportunities to make this story cute and not uncomfortable to read but they weren’t taken for the sake of ?? i don’t even know.

overall this was disappointing but a one star bc the almost sex scenes read as almost SA.

The rich playboy hero is a pushy asshole that contrives endless situations where our "average" heroine is out of her depth. It's absolutely ridiculous - and not particularly good - but I'm sure fans of the tropes will enjoy it.

I usually HATE stories, especially josei or shoujo manga, where there are consent issues. However — I actually like the chemistry between the main characters and the (potential of the as yet to be revealed) history they have. I don’t like the wilting-wallflower heroine type who gets flustered yet still turned-on during “smexytimes,” but I want to hope there’s more room for growth for her. As for the “hero” — he is one of those rich, successful, and arrogant types, but I do think it will be revealed further that he has quite a soft spot for the heroine. It’s not the best smutty manga out there, but there’s hope for it to get better in the volumes ahead.

A guide how to not treat women

Just as a warning there is non consensual groping and partial nudity in this series but then again it was designed for older women so be warned if such things bother you.

Honestly even being childhood friends the fake husband of the story is coming off not only as a control freak to poor Yae but for some reason is unable to say no to other people at the same time setting the basic plot for this tale of sexual misconduct. Yae might have made some bad life choices finding herself unable to pay her rent as she loses her temporary job but when her childhood friend unexpectedly finds her at rock bottom and uses her as an excuse to avoid women who want him the cringe fest begins as he hires her to be his wife in name only. This man named Takumi is a successful architect but does not discuss poor Yae's feelings in the slightest as he pushes himself upon her like she were some kind of prostitute though at least so far he has not attempted to completely dominate her yet.

I am sure there are some people that enjoy stories about men dominating women but I just felt sorry for poor Yae who is at a difficult point in her life at 29 and she is not only forced into this fake marriage but when she had a chance and tried to seek out her independence was stopped by Takumi. I am hopeful eventually Takumi will realize how inappropriate striping and fondling others are without consent and that he truly cares for Yae but learns to let love shine through but I suppose if they actually got married the series wouldn't be about a fake marriage so that may never happen. Either way I am not going to stick around to see what happens next but for those that are curious or enjoy this genre I wish you the best on your future readings. :)

A lot of manga titles make no sense. This one is self-explanatory: down-on-her-luck Yae reunites with a childhood friend, Takumi, who suggests she play his fake wife so that he can deter all his female admirers. Yae is desperate enough to agree, thinking there won’t be a problem.

She quickly learns two things: Takumi’s life as a successful architect has propelled him to a world unlike what Yae is used to, and he’s also far more comfortable with physical intimacy.

Unlike in a lot of similar stories, this fake relationship is not one between strangers (like in Happy Marriage?!) nor between best friends who need to lie for some reason. The two hail from the same small town but haven’t been in contact for six years. This adds both a level of intimacy and awkwardness that I think helps the story. Yae is neither enthralled with him or hates his guts; she knows Takumi well enough to agree to such a plot in the first place but he’s also the kind of lech that she would have avoided otherwise.

Yes, even the author says that “this manga’s Takumi is a creep.” He freely admits to Yae he has played the field and is only stopping because they’re a pain and interfering with work. However, he’s up for some fun with Yae. Our Fake Marriage includes quite a few risqué scenes of Takumi touching Yae, but she’s clearly uncomfortable even though her body reacts. Although he has stopped based on Yae’s reactions, he is still sexually aggressive and has narcissistic tendencies.

Those traits aren’t uncommon for male leads in female-oriented manga, but when the author introduces her male lead is a jerk, you know he’s definitely a jerk. Yes, there’s a more-than-slight possibility that what Yae is assuming are cover stories about their relationship are actually nuggets of truth. At the same time, though, I find it hard to believe that if he’s liked Yae for years he would have fallen out of contact with her and not been at least popping up and teasing her.

I think it’s these six years that will be key to the manga. Yae surely had a reason to come to Tokyo, but why has she been stuck as a part-timer? Why did their meetups stop? How much romantic experience has she had? I have a lot of questions that will help fill in the rather rushed setup. For now, the manga is content with Yae going to events as Takumi’s wife and him getting randy. Including glamping, which I only learned was a thing today.

Like a lot of similar heroines, Yae is naïve and bit too practical (eating salt to save money). But she also has a lot of relatable haplessness instead of just being an incompetent waif or some kind of freaky bad luck magnet. The look that Yae has when she realizes that she was utterly turned down for a job and the swirl of questions of what went wrong with her interview…been there, done that way too many times. Her comedic expressions add a lot of charm to the manga.

Speaking of looks, Yae also looks like a dead ringer for some of the shoujo heroines drawn by Natsumi Ando. Except maybe for Yae’s choice in undergarments, the characters look closer to being teenagers rather than adults near their 30s. This is Tokina’s first long-running series, so perhaps we’ll see things change as the manga gets spicier.

And no doubt it will get spicier. While Our Fake Marriage will concentrate on Yae and Takumi getting closer (in more ways than one), I still want to know about their shared and independent histories. Don’t necessarily need an explanation for his womanizing, but Takumi is in need of being more endearing to readers.

I think I can safely say that I have outgrow this type of manga. Our protagonist loses her apartment (her friend was crappy tbh) and job in the same day and runs into a childhood friend at her lowest moment. He offers her a place to stay in exchange of her pretending to his wife to ward off women. (Literally my favorite type of trope).

Except that is all I liked about it. Besides that one scene where she gets all dolled up for the party (she looked amazing). Everything else was just bleh.

I am grateful I was able to read this for free.

Ah, another josei romance with an asshole hero that's somehow ridiculously easy to read. Fun fact, a couple panels from this manga are featured in My Boy in Blue Vol. 13, which is why I picked it up in the first place.

Don’t have much to say on this one. It wasn’t what I was expecting, but it was entirely enjoyable! Loved Yae and Takumi and their friendship turned into fake relationship/marriage. I’m excited to see where Vol 2 goes!

It's the same old cliched ass trope with the added bonus of an ML who can't keep his hands to himself, EVER.
I'm debating on whether I read another volume or two in hopes that it gets better.

If there’s a prize out there for “number of non-consensual / molestation / almost-rape scenes” a story can have, then this manga deserves it. Wow. These stories made me extremely uncomfortable. Male characters like Takumi who force themselves on women and writers who portray that as attractive are not my cup of tea. I’d give this zero stars if I could. Two thumbs down.

I’ll take “Sweat and Soap” over this title any day. Consent is important.

To be honest, I hated this. Not only did it move insanely fast but it game off very rapey vibes, and I just can’t hang with that. I don’t think I will continue the series because honestly, I’m afraid it will only get worse. I mean in like 150 some odd pages he has tried to violate her I believe 5 times and each time she has said no. I just can’t hang, I’m sorry.

I am Very embarrassed I ended up reading this…
I just could not like anybody in this story at all and I absolutely detest the Main male character (MMc)..
This is one of those stories where it’s not to my liking at all and I only was able to finish it because it’s hard to take your eyes off of all the horrible things happening. So in other words, this was a train wreck I couldn’t stop looking at.
Spoilers and ranting ahead (and also several throw up emojis):

[This review is for the entire series]

I picked this up out of a whim, because I was curious after hearing about the adaptation. 😭 This is far from what I expected, I thought it's going to be funny and wholesome (like Yor and Loid Forger's relationship).

This is so problematic. 🤧 There were several instances where the male lead kept forcing himself on Yae. I didn't feel any "romance" between them at all. Takkun is a walking red flag. He's such an arrogant and domineering jerk. There's nothing I can say to defend him at all. Sure, there were some instances where he showed some "care" toward Yae. But, none of that will ever be enough to make up for sexual harassment and rape. 🚩🚩🚩

Yae, the female protagonist, has no personality besides being stupid. She doesn't even stands up for herself. There were multiple instances when Yae could've just said "no", not just to Takkun but to other guys who kept on making a move on her. I have no idea why she still chooses to stay with Takkun??? 😭

There's also just so many cliché and tropes to the point that it becomes repetitive by the end of the 10th volume. (Although, it does get at least tolerable and more wholesome towards the latest volumes.)

I have no idea why I kept reading this series?? 🤧

I don't know, maybe because it's my first time reading a josei manga. Or, maybe because this absurdity is exactly what I need right now to take my mind off my own real life problems??? This is just perfect for escapism. I kind of feel bad for rating this low because I read all the extra notes from the author about her process, the trips she went to, and all the effort she put into this series. I still want to support her, but this story is just not for me.

EDIT: I just watched the first few episodes of the live action and I liked it better than the source material. The drama adaptation added more backstory to Takkun and Yae. It helped their characters to be more fleshed out. Plus, the drama is told in both of their perspectives. Also, they basically made Takkun less of a jerk than he was at the manga.

IF YOU'RE READING THIS, just watch the drama instead.

Wow. This isn't the kind of thing any girl should read. It seriously blurs the line of consent. Our main guy character is a disgusting creep, but because he's "hot," it's ok?!?!?! Like seriously. There's literally a scene where our main guy character puts two champagne glasses in our female main characters' hands and says something like "you're not allowed to break these" then he jumps in the bath with her and starts kissing, touching, even licking her 🤮🤮
They're not even legally married (even if they were no means no, but this creep couldn't even say they were married)
Our female main character is homeless in the beginning, so he offers her his spare bedroom to "pretend" to be his wife (because somehow this disgusting creep gets too much female attention) but he ends up kissing her (without consent) trying multiple times to have sex with her even though she repeatedly doesn't let him. Rips her clothes off (even in front of other people). I am so disgusted!! This makes me sick. The author was really like, "What's consent? Is that even important? He's hot. Consent only matters if they're ugly, right?"
Do yourself a favour and don't read this garbage. I just really hope young girls never read this and think this kind of behaviour is normal or ok. Wow. I hated this.

This sounded adorable, fun, and sweet. And there were certainly moments there. And I did like the art. The plan was also funny, I mean, I don't mind fake dating/fake wedding stuff. Give me that.
But for most Takuma is a fucking dick and should burn. He constantly tries to rape Yae, yes, I would call it that as she is clearly saying no, that she doesn't want it, or tries to get away. He doesn't care. It is due to manga-magics that nothing keeps happening, but holy hell, I was so put-off. One time he even ties her to a pole. Yes. For real. Another time he just rips off her clothes. Yes. Oh, and did I mention he is a manipulative dick? She accepted the offer to be with him because she thought it was temporary and she knew Takuma from childhood. What does Takuma do? Block any attempts by Yae to get her own life back. New apartment? Nope. Job? No. It was just way too creepy.
Ugh, this left a bad taste. I just kept hoping things would get better and that he would see that he was being horrible/psychopathic. But no. I would have definitely run away so hard. Then again. I can see him just stalk her and drag her back. *shivers*

Picked up on a lazy Sunday to distract myself - I found this manga pretty fun. It deals with our heroine who is made homeless when he roommate asks her to move out. She gets an offer to pretend to be a wife to a childhood friend and love with him until she can find her place. And then we’re off to the races ...

If you’ve read this sort of romance manga before you’ll recognize the tropes - the hot successful guy who is obviously into our heroine, the clumsy average heroine who doesn’t have a clue, and almost sex scenes which are awkward (to down right wrong) if you think of them in a real world context.

This book skews into the comedy tone so the relationship doesn’t bother me as much. This worked for me - fun time reading it. Nothing very different for now but a fun read that can be found on KU.

The art is pretty nice which helps.

Going to read the next volume to see if this picks up or does anything different.
