For fans of epic fantasy with adventure and romance, Curse of Shadows reveals a world of unique magic, breathtaking action and unforgettable love.
Amassia teeters on the brink of the next Great Dying.
The second sun has returned as our Bone Throwers foresaw--casting the nine realms into war.
My name is Ash, and I fell in the battle for Baiseen. But I’m awake now, slowly putting the pieces back together.
My Heir has lost his throne
My sailor is gone.
And there is an emptiness inside me I can’t explain.
Amid the chaos, someone must collect the original twelve whistle bones from all corners of the world. Marcus is named to lead the cause, but with his volatile phantom, he’ll need diplomacy as much as his sword. And we are not the only ones to seek the bones.
Yet succeed we must.
Because if we don’t, it will be death to all…

The Amassia series is best enjoyed in order. Reading Order: Book #1 Crown of Bones Book #2 Curse of Shadows

“It’s simple. Whoever holds the crown, holds the future of all the realms in their hands.”
Curse of Shadows picks up a few weeks after the end of Crown of Bones. Marcus and his group are back in Baiseen, where they are working on rebuilding the capital city after the attack of Tann. Marcus is still reeling from the discovery that his brother is now the heir to the throne, but he is soon given a new purpose and tasked with the mission to gather all the original Whistle Bones before Tann can do so. The survival of all the realms depends on it.
As in the first book, there are chapters from different characters, namely Marcus, Ash, and Kaylin, but there are also new perspectives added, which allowed us to see the bigger picture at times, and also to get to know some characters more in-depth. One of the new perspectives was particularly intriguing to me, as I considered them as one of the “villains” of the story even though their goal is not to be evil and they actually have good intentions. While I understand that this character will probably have a bigger role to play in the next book, I am still wondering what exactly they are responsible for, and how much they will impact our heroes’ quest.
The world-building also expands in this book, as Marcus and his group have to travel all around Amassia to collect the whistle bones. We can see different people with different cultures and ways, and I like how the author also weaved mythology, prophecies, and history of the realms in this book, without making it too heavy on the details, or having massive info-dumps. The magic system with the savant being able to raise phantoms is still very interesting to me. I love it, and I loved seeing how Marcus and his phantom struggled because Der’al has such a feisty and strong personality.
I liked that there was more than one villain to face in this sequel, and I liked Atikis, but I find it sad that we had no backstory at all and knew nothing about him before he first appeared in this book. Clearly, he is a renowned high savant, known and feared by all, but we never heard his name before he arrived in Baiseen. He is an intriguing character, but the threat would have felt more real I think if we’d known about him and his reputation before.
The rest of the characters are as well developed as in the first book. They have depth and personality, and I liked following them around the realms. Ash is still strong-willed, driven, and very loyal to her friends, but also to her beliefs and her intuitions. She struggles as she has memory issues after the battle happening at the end of Crown of Bones, and she feels like she is missing a vital part of herself. Still, she learns to trust herself more in this book, and we can see how Marcus comes to realize that she deserves more recognition for all her knowledge and her hard work.
Marcus is becoming more likable too in this book since he is a little less self-centered. In the first book, it was all about him controlling his phantom so he could fulfill his destiny. Now, he realizes that there is more to his life than his status and the recognition of his people. He also has no choice but to see that there are much bigger problems coming their way than him losing his status as an heir.
Kaylin remained my favorite character, alongside Ash. He is still this roguish, mysterious, and very attractive sailor, and I love their dynamic and their complicity. They bring a hint of sweet romance to the series, but as in the first book, romance is not the main focus at all. They know their mission, and they know they can’t put their feelings first if it means endangering their quest, but they are also very “grown-up” about their relationship. They don’t hide their feelings for each other, they have mature conversations and can make good choices about their relationship and their mission.
One of my criticisms of the first book was that the bigger picture or main plot didn’t become clear until the last part of the book. The plot was more straightforward and clearer in this book. From the very beginning, we know what Marcus’ mission will be, and who are their main enemies. There is action, fighting scenes, betrayal, and abductions, a hint of sweet romance, and the last part of the book broke my heart a little bit. After the 70% mark, I was desperate to know how things would unfurl for Ash, Kaylin, and Marcus, and I kept reading “just one more chapter” to see how it would end.
I think this is an underrated fantasy series that deserves to be known. I loved both books, and I am already looking forward to the third book, even though I know it’s going to be a long wait.
Curse of Shadows is done and dusted! At the printers right this minute to get to Tantor Audio and bookshelves by the release date - December 6, 2022.
I am so excited! And grateful, especially for everyone's patience and enthusiasm.
AND! I just got the news that Curse of Shadows is on @netgalley right now. Requires the publisher's permission but they are letting reviewers through now.
I'm feeling so good about this story!
Thank you for checking in. xxKim
*** I am editing, editing, editing. I think the book might actually be too long right now, but I am loving it. Can't wait for you all to read, and hear what you think!
I will update you all as we go.
Still not sure of the release date but I'll have that as soon as I hear.
Thanks for all the wonderful support, insights and Amassia love.
I loved this book! I have looked forward to reading this book since the moment I finished the previous book in the series, Crown of Bones. I was in a bit of a reading slump with nothing really grabbing my attention until I started reading this book and I was immediately captivated. I love this group of characters and the magic system in this world is incredibly interesting. I really enjoyed this newest adventure.
The book is told from several different points of view and I loved getting to see the perspectives of the various characters. This book picks up shortly after the events of the first book so this is a series that really should be read in order. A second sun has risen and The Great Dying is imminent. Marcus is no longer the Heri but he has been given the task of collecting twelve whistle bones from various lands. Marcus, Ash, Kaylin, Piper, and the rest of the crew have quite the task ahead of them and there are those that would do whatever they can to stop them.
This story was very exciting. I love the magic of the story and the fact that anything could happen at any given time just takes things to the next level. The characters in this story are incredibly well done. I wanted to see good things happen for Ash, Kaylin, Marcus, and the rest of the group. There were plenty of twists and turns in the story and while I was able to figure out some of them, there were others that took me completely by surprise. This was one of those books that was almost impossible to set aside once I picked it up.
I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend this series to others. I have found it to be an incredibly entertaining and original series. While I wouldn’t say this book ended on a cliffhanger, I feel like I need to get my hands on the next book in this series just as soon as possible!
I received a digital review copy of this book from Entangled: Teen.
Initial Thoughts Okay, I need to get my hands on the next book as soon as possible. This book was just as exciting as I had hoped it would be. Marcus, Ash, Piper, and the rest of the characters definitely have their work cut out for them in this installment. There were a few things that I figured out before they were revealed in the story but there were some surprises as well.
I just finished rereading while writing book three. At first, it was all business, for the continuity of the plot, but I kept disappearing into the pages.
I guess that's not such a bad thing.
It's pure joy to immerse in this world. I am so grateful for it, and these characters!
I have to give a lot of credit to A.K. Wilder. Because of her, I’m a YA fantasy reader and fan. Reading Curse of Shadows put me in a happy place, where I was able to forget the real world. In doing so, I was teleported to Amassia, a planet consisting of seven continents, which now forms a single landmass. It’s a world of savants and phantoms. Where two suns have appeared, heralding the next Great Dying. Where a band of seemingly misfits have the fate of the world on their shoulders.
Curse of Shadows is the second book in the Amassia series. This is not a standalone read. Crown of Bones needs to be read first. I thought Crown of Bones was a great story. Somehow, A.K. managed to make Curse of Shadows even better. Where Crown of Bones left readers with tons of questions and possible theories, Curse of Shadows answered those questions but created a couple of pretty big ones. She amped up the story, as well as the violence.
Deception is the theme of Curse of Shadows. This was an intense and gripping story. So much happens within the pages of this book. There are twists and turns. A.K. takes the characters and readers on an emotional rollercoaster. Getting to the end gave me a sense of relief. Of happiness. Of anticipation for what is to come next.

This one picks up right where Crown of Bones ended and holy heck I haven’t been this excited to read a sequel for a while! First of all, it’s EMBARRASSING how much I cried while reading this one, seriously.. umm excuse YOU @a.k.wilder for that. Anyways, tears aside, once again we have a book where the author goes above and beyond with the details to ensure that you understand the magic that’s happening in their world, and I’m HERE. FOR. IT. This back is jam picked with information, so get settled in for a long read cause you’re all about to LEARN, SON. I enjoyed the first book a lot, but I LOVED this one. LOVED.
Magic, betrayals, fights, emotional rollercoaster, this book is a whole damn vibe and I don’t know why more people aren’t talking about it in all honesty. What are we all doing? Can we please collectively start spamming people with this book? The holidays are right around the corner and I’ve already got a copy of this ordered for 4 people (along with the first book)… they WILL like it.
Thank you to Entangled Teen and NetGalley for the e-arc.
A high stakes adventurous quest that takes us across Amassia with a diverse and badass cast of characters!
I won't hold it against Wilder that I had to wait a very long time for this sequel. I loved every minute of immersing myself back into this world with these characters and have to say It was adventurous rollercoaster for my emotions.
It picks up right where Crown of Bones left off with the group traveling with Heir Marcus Adicio facing off with Tann and protecting the sanctuary and whistle bone. By the throw of the bones it is decided that this group will go on yet another quest this time to save the world from the Great Dying.
I loved that we get to continue on with these amazing band of characters, getting to see even more character development and growth as they face many challenges along the way. One of my favorite things that Wilder does in this series is telling the story from multiple POVs. It really gives depth to the story and adds a unique element of being able to know what is going on in other parts of the world in a parallel timeline that create and add to the overall story. I also love getting to see more of the characters personalities to come through. Especially Salila! She is my favorite! Ash continues to be strong willed and starts to learn to have some more faith in herself. The complexity of her relationship with Kailyn and Marcus definitely add a fun element to the story. We also get the addition of so many characters from their travels as well as some more POVs.
We are given so much action as well as personal turmoil as the heroes are faced with multiple villains and challenges. There is more information shared on the Mar as well as the lore of the world and whistle bones thread throughout the book. Up until the very end I had no idea what was going to happen or where the story was going. I had to really process my emotions over the last few chapters because so much happened in such a short time.
Overall, I could not get enough of this world and these characters. I was on the edge of my seat the whole time never knowing the fate of the characters. I was feeling all of my emotions, from the banter between Kailyn and Ash, to the arguing between Deral and Marcus to the heart flutters Salila gives Marcus! Not to mention the heart wrenching moments that came at the end in many forms. I am so excited to see where this story goes with the reveals that came at the end that definitely threw me for a loop and surprised the hell out of me.
This is such an underrated series. Wilder crafts such a beautiful world, dynamic characters and entwines so many moving plot lines while still giving the vibe of a classic fantasy quest!
This is the continuation of the series and it starts from book 1s cliffhanger. It starts fast with so much fighting and searching for power. Ash and Kaylin are getting closer. They both seem to be holding some things back. Though Ash is not aware. Marcus returns home to many surprises and is sent on a quest. There's so many powers and politics at work.
This book is so fast paced. It's told through so many of the characters' povs. Right when I think I know who is the one behind everything their pov trips me up.
This book also has a bit of a cliffhanger to go into the next book with some racing hearts and some open questions like what the heck? Ash is my favorite character but I do like the tortured ones usually. Those she trusted were lying to her so I feel she might shift dramatically in the next book.
Marcus with his crew are still searching for the whistle bones while the other power plays are happening right under their noses. I am really enjoying De'ral and Salila's relationship as they are both very powerful beings but also the banter between De'ral and Marcus as he tries to control his phantom is great.
I still don't know what Brogal, Rhiannon and Teern are planning. Anyone have any ideas?
Thank you entangled_publishing and netgalley for the eARC for the honest and voluntary review.
Thanks to Netgalley and Entangled Teen for providing me with an e-arc of this book.
Reading the first book in this series was such an adventure and I was very excited to read book 2! It didn't disappoint to say the least and after this ending I can.not.wait for book 3 to come out!
This story starts off pretty much right where the first book ended. I don't want to spoil too much but in this book we follow Marcus, Ash, Kaylin and their friends on new adventures. The future of their world may well depend on them...
I loved reading this book a lot. It's fast paced, has lots of action and it has plot twists I didn't see coming. I'd recommend this series to anyone who is looking for a great YA fantasy series full of adventures, love and friendship!
This book was everything and more that a second book can be! The storyline was so well done, the characters are enjoyable and keep growing throughout the series, and the plot kept you intrigued throughout the whole story! This book was wonderful and can't wait until the next one comes out! This is an underrated series in my opinion and it deserves so much more attention than it's gotten so far, but it is wonderfully done. Highly recommend to anyone who wants a great story!
Wow!!! What a great follow up to the first book. Talk about dark, adventurous and thrilling. Cannot wait to continue this series! Absolutely adore Ash!
I sincerely appreciate Entangled Teen and NetGalley for the review copy. All opinions expressed are my own.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for the free E-ARC in return for an honest review.
I really wanted to love this, but honestly it feels as though this sequel has a case of second-book syndrome. The first book was such a ride, but the characters I loved in book 1 felt completely different than in this sequel. It caused me to be disinterested in the book at times, which I found really sad because book one was so interesting! I really wanted to like this one, but sadly it wasn't it for me.
When I saw the ARC of this book available on Netgalley… I’ve never sent a request so fast. This book is one of my most anticipated releases for this year and, oh man, it was everything I could have hoped for. If I could rate these books higher than five stars, I most definitely would. Pre-ordered because I need this one on my shelf. I’m just so excited about this book and so grateful that it lived up to all my hopes and expectations.
Curse of Shadows picks up right where we left off in the first book, Crown of Bones. Our reluctant heroes are back in Baiseen after their harrowing journey and adventures of Aku. The Bone Throwers have tasked Marcus with a new quest, and the group must embark to find the original whistle bones and save all of Amassia from the Next Great Dying.
We have a few new perspectives added that the story is being told from. I really liked this choice that the author made as it allowed us to get to know other characters better. The relationships are blossoming and give you all the feels. All of the characters have such depth and relatability. One person I wish I could have gotten to know more is the villain, Atikis. I feel like there is more to his back story than we are told and it would have made him, as a threat, feel more real.
The lore and world-building are so rich and intricate. From prophecies, to magic systems, to political kingdoms, this series has it all. I love everything about this story world and I’m very pleased that we get so much detail about it. The scenes are remarkably painted with vivid detail.
All the perilous adventures that we loved in the first book continue in this second installment. And there are so many more surprises that are yet to come and to be revealed along the way. If you love a book that has multiple plots intertwining, then this is a fantasy series for you. The author has put some series work into developing the plot arcs and it really shines through.
The tension that builds throughout this second book is tantalizing and kept me turning the pages. And, amazingly, it’s not over yet, which means I have even more to look forward to with these characters I love and the thrilling adventures they endure. I feel like we’ve hit the precipice in this story and I can’t wait for a legendary conclusion to the saga. I’m not sure if this is going to be a trilogy or more, but either way, I’m permanently along for the ride.
And OH EM GEE the last section of this book is shattering! I was reeling trying to process the emotional intensity of the events and reveals. I can’t wait for the next one. This story just gets better and better as the layers are piled on and unfolded. This is an epic second book and you don’t want to miss it. So many times the second books can be disappointing, but not this one. If you are an avid young adult (or even adult) fantasy reader and you haven’t picked up this series yet, go get it immediately. It’s amazing and you’ll love it as much as I do.
I think this is one of the most underrated fantasy series right now. Seriously, where is the hype for this masterpiece? I, for one, will be sharing my love for it with anyone who will listen. Entangled, my message to you, step it up on the marketing for these books, sheesh. And to my fellow readers who love this also, let’s get the word out there on all the socials. I just really can’t believe it's not more popular because it checks all the boxes for expert narrative crafting and enjoyable reading experience. Also, kudos to the cover designer(s) because wow are they gorgeous and eye-catching.
Huge thank you to Netgalley and Entangled Teen for gifting me with an advanced copy of this amazing book! I voluntarily read and reviewed it. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Oof. This book was long and sure felt long. There was just so much that could have been trimmed from the story so I didn’t feel like it was dragging.
As for the story itself, I was bummed from the start. The end of book one was a huge reveal and a battle starting. I was so excited to see where that was going. I expected book 2 to pick up right where we left off but instead it was weeks after the battle ended and Ash had completely forgotten the reveal. I was instantly disappointed and that feeling carried throughout the book. And then it took the whole second book for the reveal to happen again.
The concept of this story is great. I liked the magic system and I was loving the blossoming romances. The romances in this book definitely took a back burner to the incredibly drawn out plot. Honestly, it was what was keeping me around and it wasn’t strong enough in this book. There were so many storylines going on at some points that I was confused and just not into it.
I’m really disappointed and even though I still have so many questions, I can’t take another 18 hour book that barley moves the storyline forward. I’ll probably just read a synopsis online for the next book.
The storyline is very fast paced. I liked this better than the first one.
All characters are very likeable.
This book is very unique in my opinion. Phantoms, Mar, Magic, Side romance and friendship
Ash is my favorite character, she's so ughhhh.
Kaylin also, where can I find him in my life he will do anything for ashh.
Marcus character arc is such a surprise in the first book, I don't really like him very whiny and self centered there's still some in this one but I can tolerate it.
Salila is becoming my favorite character in this book also.
The gang Piper, Belair, Samsen(? I'm not sure) I love them.
I hope there's a 3rd book. I just want to know what will happen to the gang.
While reading it, I just want to get to the next page to know what's happening.

Curse of Shadows is the second installment in author A.K. Wilder's The Amassia Series. The story takes place on a world known as Amassia. Much like our Earth, is the third planet from the Sun. Like our Earth, there were once 7 continents that have, over millennia, formed a single landmass surrounded by the sea. As the story begins, it appears that the prophecy of the Great Dying is here. Amassia teeters on the brink of the next Great Dying. There is now a second Sun in the Sky which will eventually kill everyone and everything on the planet unless it can be stopped.
Ok. I'm in absolute freaking love! I enjoyed Crown of Bones but holy hell did Curse of Shadows take the cake, crown and whole darn show. Action packed, excellent world building, well done plot shockers, emotion... Everything I love in a well rounded fantasy. I literally finished 450 pages in less than two days with NO audiobook y'all. Who am I??
This is book two and I feel that almost anything could be a possible spoiler so I won't go into much detail. The characters from Crown of Bones journey into this novel with perfect ease. This journey was even more so harrowing and addictive than the first. And the reveals!! It's like you know in the back of your mind what's going to happen but you're still in disbelief as things happen. This as a total 5 star for me. A.K. Wilder, I am utterly here for the next round!
Thank you Entangled Teen! I want to shove this novel in everyone's face right now and just squeal with unsupressed excitement. This beauty releases tomorrow! Y'all get ready!!!
When I read "Crown of Bones," I was thoroughly impressed with the creativity of AK Wilder's world and characters, but this book stunned me all the more! There's nothing like it anywhere! I love Ash! And Kaylin even more! 🔥 You have to read this book! It kept me hooked through the whole thing with both expected and unexpected surprises.
On and on and on and on we go. It just kept going. Sure there was a lot going on, I would argue there was too much going on. It was one thing after the other and as soon as it happened we pivoted 180 and went the other way.
It seemed like a lot to keep up with. Still all the loveable characters. Still heart wrenching Marcus who just cannot catch a break.....
A bone chilling wonder of an epic adventure that spans the world and back again Curse of Shadows is that rare book that pulls you in and keeps you at the edge of your seat as you wait to see which of our characters will make it home, who is truly good and who makes you cry at their betrayal.
While our main characters Ash, Marcus, and Kaylan are the obvious stars of this tale the beautiful world building and lush imagery, and unique cultures are a character in themselves, each new location has a feel and sense all its own, with beauty and horrors all their own that will have our trio watching their backs at every turn.
With multiple points of view that provide seamless storytelling and a flow that's so natural and easy to read it keeps you glued to the pages waiting to see which of the bones will be found and what will happen if they are. After a few chapters I didn't even need the distinction of which character we were following, they each have a voice that's all their own and makes for a truly enjoyable reading experience.
All of that being said this is a big book, but in the best sense of the way, there's so much to take in and enjoy, so many moments of holding your breath to see who makes it out of a fight, and so many tears as we say hello and goodbye in so many different ways the people we meet along the way.
The magic system is described in a mesmerizing way I've never seen before with the phantoms being another star of this epic adventure.
Even with the few little clues that were woven through the book I was surprised at the ending, where and how everyone ended up, it may just be me but it felt right. While this is truly a book of adventure and epic quests it's also the story of found family, love and loss, life and death.
Thank you to Entangled Publishing and NetGalley for providing an advance copy of this book, I have voluntarily read and reviewed it.
Usually, book two doesn't quite measure up to the first in a series but Curse of Shadows managed to hold its own. With intrigue, betrayal, and romance this story kept me entertained from beginning to end, but what really boosted this to a 5-star read for me was the plot at the end which quite literally made my jaw drop! Needless to say, I'll be pre-ordering book three as soon as available
Curse of Shadows is the second in a ya fantasy trilogy, kicking things off with two types of memory loss. For one, protagonist Ash is suffering from amnesia following the big battle that ended book one. To make matters worse, no one was with her who could explain what caused it. The second bout of amnesia was my own. It seemed sometimes to be taking me too long to pick up the main pieces of the story again, but in my opinion, the author includes enough little clues and nudges for you to work things out eventually.
In this sequel, we see our merry band of characters, once only students but now the potential heroes the world needs, set out on a quest by sea. Seeking ancient magical artifacts that will require diplomacy and bargaining with some of the most powerful leaders in the world, they also race two others trying to collect the same items. There are chases, battles, and manipulations to spare along the route. And the stakes make these challenges yet more stressful. With the arrival of a second sun on the horizon, the world is experiencing a sort of accelerated climate change called The Great Dying, so you know it's ominous. On that front, the commentary on the real world is basic but not unreasonable.
Perhaps my favorite aspect of the book is Ash's romance with Kaylin and their secret line of communication. When that link is severed, it's the first of many tests. I appreciate that much of the drama comes from external sources here rather than self-sabotage or poor emotional regulation. The love story smacks of sweet devotion, a welcome balm to angstier stories on the market-- and this despite secrets both intentional and not that leave some barriers between them.
There were other aspects of the book I didn't enjoy as much. For one: Marcus. As another main POV, I don't remember finding him so frustrating in the first book. We open on him having a tantrum over losing his throne. His arc of trying to learn a semblance of control or even just collaboration with his phantom continues. There's also what I think might be a new or at least amplified dismissiveness towards non-savants, including his best friend, Ash. Though he has twinges of regret for how he might hurt her specifically with his comments, we're not yet at a point where we see him question his overall worldview, something that might develop in the series finale if we're lucky.
In terms of other characters, what I recall as a lively main cast falls a bit flat in this sequel. They orbit Ash, Kaylin, and Marcus without offering much nuance or emotion to the story. It seems more like they offer specific functions to the company on the quest rather than anything deeper. And the quest is a pretty straightforward affair, i.e. sail here, get the thing, fight some guys, wash, rinse, repeat. Despite the constant flow of action, the formulaic nature of the quest didn't hold my interest as much as I'd like. I could tell that the intended emotional impact of the story wasn't reaching me, either, because even a section on grief didn't stir much up in me-- a topic that rarely fails to get an emotional reaction.
I will say there's a cool twist right at the end-- not the first one but the second one. We get one reveal that's so clearly spelled out to the readers throughout both books that it was honestly just a relief to have it out in the open. For the second one, though, I was expecting ~something~ but didn't realize just how deep the secret went, so that was a cool moment. There's one more book to come, and it'll be interesting to see how things wrap up for Ash & Co on the world-saving front. Thanks to Entangled Teen for my copy to read and review!
I did enjoy, though. I love the cover, the adventure (kind of), the dual POV, and the short chapters (though there were quite about that were pretty lengthy and I didn't really like that cause it was unexpected).
I wasn't a fan of the whole Saliha, Marcus, and De'ral thing - kind of odd. I didn't really like the Marcus and Saliha thing either, like I felt it came out of nowhere. I would have been fine if Salia had this like "claim" thing to Marcus instead and would just mess with him, and then they slowly have a thing over the books. But no, she and him both kind of had feelings for each other right away.
Same with Ash and Kaylin. There's a bit better, and I know it's the second book, but even in the first book, I feel like it was pretty instant love. I mean, in the first quarter of this book, they both realize they love each other - I know Kaylin did, at least. I'm like, why you guys don't you know each that much.
Don't get me wrong, I think they're cute, but it was also really cheesy.
Marcus annoyed me, though I did feel a bit bad for him when De'ral does his own thing and honestly treats him pretty shit and ends up doing something really stupid. This does ask the question : Are phantoms their own beigns/can they be? I think.
The other characters and their interaction, none of them feel fleshed out? Marcus, Ashley, Kaylin, and Saliha are the ones I feel like have the most character, but even they struggle a little and seem so plain? I didn't know, but Piper, Samsen, Tyche, and Belair just feel kind of their and they way they all interact as group is so boring - I don't feel like their friends or even comrades that have been through a lot already together.
Tann and Atikis were boring at the end. The idea of them - great, love it - actual execution, did not enjoy. We kept hearing about Tann, Tann, and Tann, and I don't even remember a description of him, and he was gone in like 2 seconds. I mean, it made sense, but there was such build-up, and for what?
Atikis was a little better. I did actually enjoy that fight scene with him and Saliha. Saliha jumping out a window in a fur coat - I did like that scene, and I was able to visualize it pretty well.
Now, once again, I don't know what it is, but when Wilder describes settings, I can imagine them for the life of me. I don't know what it is, but I just can't wrap my mind around it.
I honestly don't really get how Ash didn't know she was Savant. I mean the inner voice? I feel like that's something in this world (even non savant), know that phantoms and savant talk to each other in their minds - maybe not, and I overanyzled. I just feel like for Ash, an inner voice should have made her suspicious.
Then again, she also like never questioned Master Brogal, and it was so stupid. How can she trust him so much, especially after how he's treated her. It was very annoying to read. Like I get in the beginning and being with him, she's not got going to, but I feel that throughout the book, there were clear signs that he shouldn't be trusted.
Rihannons, okay - I mean the straight-up murders of both the magistrates were pretty interesting. Though I feel like Petens happened too quickly.
The last chapter (Kaylin's POV) was really interesting. I still don't really get what he is, I think he's supposed to be a phantom - the Mar are Phantoms? I think that's what that chapter was saying, but I wasn't sure.
So I am still interested to see how this story goes - I don't know about buying it, but watch the 3rd will be super good, and I'll regret not buying it lol.

The writing is beautiful, the characters feel like real people and the plot defies description. I mean check out this synopsis:
Amassia teeters on the brink of the next Great Dying.
The second sun has returned as our Bone Throwers foresaw--casting the nine realms into war.
My name is Ash, and I fell in the battle for Baiseen. But I’m awake now, slowly putting the pieces back together.
My Heir has lost his throne.
Because if we don’t, it will be death to all… It gives me goosebumps! And, even better, the book lives up to the hype.
Curse of Shadows picks up right where Crown of Bones leaves off. Some pretty big things happened at the end of CoB, so I was a little disappointed to find out there were some secrets that managed to get hidden again (no spoilers in case you haven't read the first book). I'm not sure what I expected, but I struggled with the first part of the book. To me, it felt a little slow (the last part of CoB was so tense and fast moving) and I didn't think I was going to be able to get back in to the story. Luckily, it picks up about a third of the way through, and by the time I was halfway done, I couldn't put it down.
True to form, Wilder writes another crazy rollercoaster of a twisted book. There are so many secrets and plots and sub-plots that I am not kidding when I say it's impossible to know who to trust. I do love that just when I thought I knew where things were heading, everything blows up and it turns out I didn't know half of what I thought I did. The last chapter was mind blowing!
I did not love that so much of the plot(s) revolve around poor communication. I find that trope frustrating, but I will say that Wilder makes it work here. I am also on the fence about all the POVs here. It makes the story richer and you get to see more of the action rather than just getting told what happened, but in some places it slowed the plot down and drug things out. And this was a massive book, not just in length but in information. Even so, I can't wait to reread it. And I am already wishing for the next book.
Seriously, if you haven't read this series yet, you need to!
I received an ARC from Netgalley, but all opinions are freely given.
While I thoroughly enjoyed the first book in the series, this one had me pinned to the pages all the way to the last page.
Ash is not herself. Not only are there massive holes in her memory, but she feels as if a part of her has been ripped away. But there are bigger concerns as Marcus, the Heir, has been side-stepped for his rightful place on the throne, and the next Great Dying is approaching. Now, the task switches to collecting the bones to form the crown and the only means of saving the world before others do.
This is not a stand-alone and continues where book one left off. While book one ends in a cliff-hanger, this one starts with a settled state, leaving Ash with the consequences of the last event. But she...nor anyone else...isn't sure what happened. Luckily, this frustrating state doesn't hold through the entire read (which I feared it might), and instead, it's only a stepping stone in another amazing adventure.
There are plots and subplots twisting and turning, new characters to love and hate mixing with the 'old' ones from book one, and so many surprises. The intrigue splits and spins as various fronts join with their own goals concerning the Great Dying and the bones. Some, who were thought to be important, fade, while others, who seemed weak are suddenly showing their true faces. This isn't only in comparison with book one's events, but within these pages too. It's packed, it's fast-paced, and it's very well woven.
The characters gain depth and take some unexpected turns, which promises even more excitement in the next book. Ash's lack of clarity in the beginning, allowed other characters to slide further to the front and gain more depth. A few new ones also joined the plot...and these added new points of view to the mix as well. I would have liked to get to know a little more about some of the villains, and there are still a few loose ends after Ash comes back to center stage in the later part of the book. But all of this just had me eager to dive into the next novel and see where it all leads...because so far, it's been amazing.
I received a DRC and already find this to be one of the better series I've read this year.
Ash fell during the battle of Baiseen – but they didn't stay lost. Though it certainly feels like they have lost over such a short time span. Somebody will have to get back up and put the world together again.
It looks like someone is going to have to be Ash. And so a quest begins, with many others (friends and foes) hoping to complete the same task – for their own gain, naturally.
“Sometimes, the heart is afraid to speak, for fear of breaking the spell ," my wise inner voice says.”
My Review:
Ohhhh! Curse of Shadows is the second novel in the Amassia series, and I have been looking forward to this release! It's a creative take on fantasy worlds, and that worldbuilding is perfection! Obviously, I have a lot of good things to say about this book.
The trick is putting my thoughts into non-spoilery words, which is a challenge for this particular review. I guess I have a lot of feelings this time around! This isn't too much of a surprise because Curse of Shadows will put readers on one heck of an emotional roller coaster. Seriously, get those tissues ready. Expect a few strange looks from those around you because keeping your emotions in check will NOT happen. Speaking from experience here.
Highlights Fantasy World Worldbuilding Multiple POV Secrets galore
Thanks to Entangled: Teen and #NetGalley for making this book available for review. All opinions expressed are my own.
