I needed more from the characters, I felt like I didn't get anything from them or know their personalities. I just wanted a whole lot more from this story.

A prequel novella which serves as an introduction to the world of the Saberian people after an atrocity takes place forcing a King to stand in the place of a Queen.
This story read more like a paranormal/urban fantasy than a sci-fi romance, but was still enjoyable. This alien race has a sabertooth inside them that they can shift into. The Sabertooth has its own personality and quirks. I was slightly disappointed because I was hoping for some alien smut! We did get a steamy scene, but I believe so much more is to come in the second book!
I really enjoyed that the author told the story through various characters. I found the way it was told from mainly one character, Arana, but had chapters that told other things going on that he was not a part of from the other POVs. The fact that it was just sporadic and not alternating added to the overall feel of the book. I found the relationship between Arana and his Saber, Beast to be entertaining. We do not get much on the other character which I was slightly disappointed with, they just made small cameos. It mainly just focused on Arana and his own personal struggles.
We did get to see some other aliens and space travel, but it was very brief. The world and rituals behind the Sabers were interesting, but I wanted more.
Overall, it was a unique story that had elements and story telling that was intriguing to me. I was not expecting that there would be little romance/sex, but believe with the cliff hanger and that the next book is suppose to be a MFMM reverse harem will be what I was hoping for in this one. It definitely ended with a cliff hanger, and by that it just kind of stopped. Although it was missing some of those things I expected going into this, it was a quick read and pulled me in enough that I want to continue with the next book and see how they solve the problems. I know this is vague but it was a short story and didn't want to give too much away.

I was pleasantly surprised with Rust's book that took me for a wild, creepy ride that shocked me and was full of secrets and twists.
I am one who has a weird fascination with the strange, creepy and macabre. Mainly it consists of watching horror movies , haunted houses, or going exploring in the middle of the night. I love the exhilaration that comes from scaring myself. Sadly I have not found many books that give me chills and make me second guess the noises I hear in the middle of the night. Although it wasn't the entire book, I definitely was getting creepy, chilly vibes at the beginning of the book and I really appreciated that.
I really enjoyed Rust's writing style and the voice that she created for Chessie. I felt like I was best friends with Chessie and that she was sitting next to me telling a story. The writing was just so easy and created a fast paced read that I flew through. I was driven by wanted to know what was going on and what was going to happen. Rust did a great job at sprinkling twists and secrets that kept the story moving forward. She was very straightforward with the writing that there was no unnecessary fluff.
The paranormal elements are not seen very often in young adult, at least the books I have read. It was a unique addition to the overall story and I think Rust did so well with those elements. There was a moment at the end where I almost completely gave up on the book. I thought I would mark it lower because of that moment, but it redeemed itself! There was a nice and casual romance that was not insta-lovey or too cheesy. I really liked the characters and how their stories unfold.
Overall I found this to be a very quick and creepy read. If you are looking for a fun, unique story that involves some paranormal elements, creepy voices, and axe murder house and secrets. This is the book for you. It is not a book that will be the next modern classic. But is such an enjoyable, fun read that will keep you on the edge of your seat and your heart pounding.

Aislinn is such a relatable FMC and I appreciated the neurodivergent rep. I liked seeing her work through the transition of now being next in line. I also loved her interactions with her father. The time she spent in the smithy learning hand talk was some of my favorite! Her and Hakon are just so adorable. All the stolen glances, just so swoony! I was obsessed with how growly he was regarding her! I also loved seeing the hard of hearing rep. I grew up with a mom who similarly was mostly deaf in one ear and I lip read because of that. It has given us a way to communicate in public now without others knowing! I could just go on forever on how much I loved these two and just how pure this romance was!
Of course I can’t forget to mention wülf! I love that Wendel includes cute animal sidekicks. There were so many new characters introduced that I am hoping to see in future books and possible get their own! But cannot wait for Allarion and his stabby unicorn! ...more
