Hello, my name is Rachel Aaron, and I write the Heartstriker books, a new Urban Fantasy series about misfit dragons, starting with Nice Dragons Finish Last. I also wrote The Legend of Eli Monpress fantasy series for Orbit Books about a wizard thief and the poor bastards who have to try and stop him. PLUS I'm also the author of the new, rolicking fun Science Fiction romance Fortune's Pawn under the name Rachel Bach.
I was born in Atlanta, but I currently live a lovely, nerdy, bookish life in Denver, CO with my lightspeed son, perpetually understanding husband, and far too many plants. Besides my own books, the internet knows me best for writing very fast. The best way to get to know me is probably to read my blog or follow me on Twitter.
3.5 « Motherhood is cruel, which is why I must be crueler ».
Heartstrikers series: Book 1 - Nice Dragons Finish Last: 3.75 (4*) Book 1.5 - Mother of the Year: 3.50 (3*) Book 2 - One Good Dragon Deserves Another: 3.75 (4*) Book 3 - No Good Dragon Goes Unpunished: 4.25 (4*) Book 4 - A Dragon of a Different Color: 3.50 (3*) Book 5 - Last Dragon Standing: to be read
A short of Bethesda being interviewed by a talk show host dragon. It gives, maybe, a little history of the Heartstrikers but mainly it is Bethesda being herself. Not particularly nice and very into herself. It was interesting.
There's nothing wrong with Mother of the Year. It's mildly funny and it's a quick read. Mostly, I feel meh about it because there's nothing essential in it, a common issue I have with bonus novellas in series. Very rarely do they really feel worth the time to read, even if they're short like this one.
Lots of funny and interesting tidbits from the Heartstrikers world. Bethesda is a horrible person (dragon) but is so blatant about it, and unashamed, that she says these outrageous things and makes me laugh in horror.
As usual i check the loc points when i open a book on my Kindle. This one said 800, so was obviously a short, but i was rather disappointed when it suddenly ended after 242 loc points and i find the rest is just a marketing exercise for a future book in the series. It's a very short, short masquerading as a normal short.
But, ho hum, it was free for signing up to the mailing list so maybe i shouldn't moan too much. But just as you're getting into Bethesda's character and you're really looking forward to the other 3/4's of the 800 loc points being filled with even more revealing stuff, you realise you're not getting what you hoped so much for.
So what's the 242 loc points about? Bethesda gets interviewed on another dragon's chat show.
Sadly, only a little bit of background into Bethesda's character, and her attitude towards her children, before moving onto the rest of the series: i so wished there was more.
Heartstrikers #1.5 The very best thing about this short is that it is very short. Only one quarter of the entire length of the book is the actual short. The rest of it is a preview for the third book in this series.
I suppose my deep loathing of Bethesda is the main reason that I don't like this short. It's an interview with her and know it is somewhat amusing, the topic repels me at every turn.

A very short little look into Bethesda, who is categorically never going to be 'Mother of the Year'. It gives a little background for how Bethesda raised her small army of dragon children and is mildly entertaining. The short length - 25 pages odd - and format means that there isn't a lot here though, so it is a quick and free bonus read.
This wasn't bad, but it was pointless. I don't feel like we learn anything new about Bethesda by reading this and it doesn't add anything to the plot. If you're a huge fan of the series you'll probably still enjoy it and it's very short which is a bonus in this case.
A little, semi-entertaining blurb of a story, focused solely on Bethesda. If you came looking for the inside scoop on Julius, prepare for disappointment.
