Poppy thought the summer would last forever. Then she was diagnosed with terminal cancer. Now Poppy's only hope for survival is James, her friend and secret love. A vampire in the Night World, James can make Poppy immortal. But first they both must risk everything to go against the laws of Night World.
L.J. SMITH, Lisa Jane Smith, is the New York Times #1 Bestselling author of The Vampire Diaries, The Secret Circle, The Forbidden Game, Dark Visions, Wildworld and Night World series. She has written over two dozen books for children and young adults, and has enjoyed writing every one of them. She lives in the Bay Area of California, with a backyard that is full of flowers, which she adores, especially with many different shades of roses.
She loves to visit a friend's little cabin in the Point Reyes National Seashore area, which has lots of trees, lots of animals, lots of beaches to walk on, and lots of places to hike. Once, while hiking, she saw a snow-white buck which allowed her to follow it nearly half a mile. She also likes to collect things: angels (they remind her of her late mother), tiny boxes from different countries or of fanciful shape, nineteenth century children's literature, and books about quantum physics--especially about the mystery of the dark energy in the universe. A militant optimist, she is also part of the Velociraptor Sisterhood (a fancy way of saying that she likes to read, write and discuss books with strong female characters), and she has traveled extensively in Europe and the Far East. The two countries she loves to visit most are Great Britain, with its historic monuments and amazing country landscapes, and Japan, with its bustling urban life and exquisite mountain scenery.
Her favorite current writer is Terry Pratchett, the author of the Discworld series, for its wild and witty satires on life, death, war, love, assassins, coppers, and Australia. Her favorite classical writer is Jane Austen. Her favorite poets are Robert Frost and Emily Dickinson. Her favorite movies are The Seven Samurai and Avatar (analyze that!). She doesn't have a favorite TV show, because she doesn't have time to watch TV (and only owns one for playing movies).
Her favorite people are her readers, each of whom she cherishes with deep and lasting affection.
Note: L. J. Smith wrote books 1-7 of The Vampire Diaries series. After that, a ghostwriter took over the rest of the series. L. J. wrote books 1-3 of The Secret Circle series. Poppy North is a typical sixteen-year old--she gets through school by being smarter than her teachers; likes to irritate her straight-laced twin brother, Phil; listens to New Age and techno music; has a secret crush on her best friend, James; and wakes up on the first morning of summer vacation before her senior year of high-school with nothing more paramount on her mind than what she can do with an entire summer spent with James.
Until the pain in her abdomen, which has steadily been increasing, working its way around to her back, keeping her awake at night, and causing her to lose weight, sends her to the doctor. Who then sends her to the hospital for tests. Where doctors then inform her that she has pancreatic cancer--the kind that will kill you within three weeks to three months.
Poppy, of course, isn't ready to die. Watching the reaction of her family--twin brother Phil, her mother, and step-father Cliff--only brings the truth closer to home. Poppy is going to die, there's nothing anyone can do about it, and it's going to be painful.
Except there is someone who can do something about it. James Rasmussen, her best friend from El Camino High School, her secret crush, a boy who now tells her something impossible--he's a lamia, a boy who was born a vampire, a member of the Night World, and he can change Poppy into a vampire to avoid certain death.
Of course Poppy doesn't believe him at first, but then what choice does she have? There's always been something different about James, and now she knows exactly what the difference is. So she agrees to become a vampire, knowing she'll have to leave her family behind, but knowing it's the only way to avoid certain death.
What follows is a fast-moving, interesting story about Poppy's immersion into becoming a vampire, the toll it takes on her brother, Phil, who finds out what they're doing, and the danger it puts James in. Because there are only two rules of the Night World: Never let the humans know it exists, and never fall in love with one of them. James has broken both of those rules.
What a great start to the Night World series! Towards the end of the book we meet some other interesting characters, which I'm guessing will play major roles in future books, so I can't wait to get started on the next read.
❝I don't know the right way to say it. I feel like somebody in a bad horror movie." he shrugged, and said without turning. "I know how this sounds, but ... Poppy, I'm a vampire.❞
I rarely read any vampire books now because they all pretty much suck. this is my second go into a vampire series, and so far it ain't bad 💁🏻
not brilliant but intriguing enough to keep you going, with its mix of ambient mystery and G-rated romance. so if you're looking for some spicy sauce, you won't find it here. you'd imagine right, because they'revampiresbut. no.
I do want to learn about the other creatures, so I'm hoping maybe in the next books. I'm kind of intrigued about Ash.
I decided to reread this series a couple years ago, but I didn't make it very far for some reason. This series has always been my least favorite of all Smith's work (except for her first two fantasy novels, which aren't really my jam), but it made an impact on me as a young teen nonetheless.
This book was different than it was in my memory (it had been a looooonnngggg time since I'd read it). For one thing, Poppy and James' relationship wasn't as nice and harmless as I'd always believed. He treats her like a legit child. Gross, man. However, this book was way sexier than I remembered. There are references to exactly what kind of wrestling James likes, and he and Poppy are basically necking all the time. I have no idea how this stuff passed over my head when I was younger.
Smith's prose is awesome. It's so easy to read. And she is the BEST YA AUTHOR EVER THE END.
Here's a portrait I did of James a million years ago ...
Not a very good book, but a lot of fun. I figure what better time to read a classic YA paranormal than spooky season. Now this story wasn't anything spectacular - the plot is rushed, the characterization is one dimensional, and the relationships are under-developed, but I just had a fun time read it. It's like a lifetime or hallmark movie - fun and engaging while it lasts, but not really something that will stick with you. And that's okay, because it provided the perfect level of escapism without making me frustrated or angry at anything, so I'm counting this as a win. And the covers are to die for.
Excited to move on to the next one. I just know the story will only get better from here. I really hope that her brother Phillip makes an appearance somewhere throughout the remainder of the series. I really fell in love with him. :)
2023 Re-reading Update: I still adore this story to bits! Although definitely meant to be a light fantasy story, the Night World series is just incredibly captivating and has this otherwordly charm that you cannot help but fall in love with.
There's something incredibly beautiful about L. J. Smith's writing. It's unlike any of the modern YA books I have read--probably because this book was written before I was born--but Smith has this way of captivating you with the simplicity of her narration, interesting though not necessarily unique plot, and well-developed characters you cannot help but want to have more of. Secret Vampire was a short yet sweet story, and I loved the relationship between the characters, and the workings of the magic system and the Night World, which we will no doubt get to see more of in the later books.
This is my second time reading this, the first being probably fifteen years ago. I have to say, I liked it more when I was a teenager, which makes sense because this is definitely geared toward a younger audience. Poppy is sixteen and pretty naive, she also has juvenile reactions to things. One second she's in love with James, then one comment from Phil and she hates James and never wants to see him again.
Poppy and James do have a pretty cute relationship overall though and I liked how things worked out. Also, Phil is a bit irritating at first, but he's protective of his sister and just wants her to be safe. James is strange and with Poppy's crush, I get him not wanting her around James.
This definitely makes me want to read the rest of the books in the series, though I'm bummed we may never get the conclusion after everything that happened with L.J. Smith and the publisher.
The first of L.J. Smith's Night World series, in which a hidden society of vampires, witches and shape-shifters struggles to keep the knowledge of their existence from the humans around them, Secret Vampire is essentially a supernatural "Romeo and Juliet" tale. It follows the story of sixteen-year-old Poppy North, who discovers that she is dying of cancer, and her best friend James Rasmussen, who (unbeknownst to her) is a vampire and Night World member, with the ability to "save" her.
Narrative tension abounds, as Poppy struggles with the decision to become a vampire, and James seeks to circumnavigate Night World law, which forbids its members from revealing their existence to humans, or from falling in love with them. Yes, you read that right! This series is all about the redemptive power of (forbidden!) love, and every title focuses on a different Human/Night-Worlder romance...
This series made its debut in 1996, when I was running the children's section of a large bookstore, and I picked up the first title mostly out of curiosity. I had never really read any vampire fiction before, but it was rapidly becoming apparent to me that it was an immensely popular genre with younger readers. I am certainly glad I gave L.J. Smith a chance, because I discovered a series of well-written books, with engaging characters, suspenseful plots, and (ahem!) very romantic sensibilities. Yes, there's quite a bit of teen "cheese," but it's such good fun! I sometimes find it ironic that I was never able to appreciate teen fiction as a teenager, but that's another story altogether.
Buddy Read with Deborah. I didn't enjoy it that much either. actual rating 2.5 stars. This was a fast and entertaining read, but a little too simple and maybe a bit juvenile for me. I may have loved it at 14 though and I think it would be a perfect read for young girls around that age.
Not really what I was expecting, but still very good, not that much for me as an adult, but definitely better YA than most of what I’ve seen. Of course there is a lot of romance and that was my first surprise I didn’t expected it to be as much about the relationship as it was. But it’s an interesting relationship, even more if you think is was written in 1996, a teenagers having cancer and everything surrounding it was kind of «new» or at least less frequent at the time, the author also didn’t fall into stupid clichés, stereotypes and tropes, like instalove or the love triangle. My second surprise and worst deception was the fantasy/supernatural element. The story isn’t as much focus on it as I would have wanted it to be. Those elements are well developed but always introduce in a weird way. Everyone just accept it too easily. The last thing I want to talk about was the characters who were likeable and interesting, and the writing which was more than good for this genre, very fluid, fast paced, not too flowery for no reason, etc. For me it would be a 3 stars, very fast read, enjoyable but not enough to get me going with the series. But for younger reader, both boys and girls, I think this can offer a fun ride and really take the transition between middle grade and YA, since it’s really easy to get into and kind of small. So I gave it a fair 4 stars. Not what I was expecting but in a strange way maybe better than what I was expecting!
I quickly got into this story. Poppy was lively and playful and a bit bouncy. Phil I didn't like at first, but he came to grow on me. James, I couldn't quite decide. I liked him, but still have reservations. This book is dated. You can easily tell it is a 90's style teen novel. Pre Young Adult genre lol. Short and interesting and fast to read. I really felt for the dilemma Poppy was in but I am not sure on how she reacted at times. I look forward to learning more of this Night World and hope to see more of these characters.
As an adult I rated this as a 2 star. The story had potential and the characters are likable. Poppy was well developed and we learned about James as we read the book. Phil, Poppy’s twin brother acted in many ways that any brother who cared for his sister would act. Phil also did some things a sane person would not if the situations were real. I feel the mother and step-father should have played a bigger role in the story. It was like they were there only because Poppy is a teenager and they HAD to be there. From a teenager point of view the brother was brave and amazing, maybe a little too involved but acceptable. The lack of parents except during important stuff (Poppy’s diagnosis) was acceptable and enjoyable. As an adult I was a little board with the book. I was a little more than half way into the book and I thought there was not going to be any action with the little amount of pages I have left to read. Once the action started, it moved so fast the book was over. Questions were left unanswered, one I thought was important to the story. What was the dream about? From a teenager point of view, the book probably moved quickly and exactly how it should have. The end of the book explanation is probably accepted with no questions left over. As someone who reads many vampire stories, it is the typical male vampire/ female human love story. I saw some similarities with this series and newer released vampire series. Some examples of this are character similarities (vampires going outside during the day) and even character names (Quinn, Claudine, and Eric). I will say Eric might not be anything as it is a common name but it was pretty odd considering the other two names. It makes me wonder if the other two authors read this story before writing their own series. As a mother, I like is how L.J. Smith wrote about Poppy being in love with James but did not make or imply they had a sexual relationship. Young teens are faced with enough sexual media that it is nice to have one talk about emotions. In my personal opinion James should have been a little more aggressive considering he is a vampire and all.
Unlike another favorite series from those days, which I re-read in recent years and then questioned my middle grade taste in books, this series is still as amazing as the day I read it.
This is a short read, but it is utterly satisfying. There’s the star-crossed lovers, the villain, and vampires and witches galore! I seriously can’t wait to dive into the rest of these books. Who knows, maybe by the time I re-read the last of them, there will finally be a new release date set for the final book in the series. It’s only 17 years past due.
I love this book and how each character has a personality that gets built on. I also enjoy the happy positive personality of Poppy. I was also happy with the ending and this is my second time reading this so I will say that the characters will be back and you will know why later in the books if you read them.
COME ON!
Dalykai, kurie man itin patiko tai:
- labai greitai besivystantis siužetas. Tai labai geras dalykas, nes išlaiko dėmesį ir nesukelia kančių „kada gi baigsis ta knyga po velnių...“ - skyriai labai trumpi. Tai taip pat pliusas, nes neįkyri skaitymas ir negalvojo vėl „kada gi baigsis...etc“ - knyga apie 200psl. Tad greitai susiskaito ir nereikia kankintis su ja mėnesių mėnesius. (man užteko apie 3 dienų)
APIBENDRINIMAS: įdomi, lengvai skaitoma, greitas veiksmas, įdomūs veikėjai, tik neįdomi liga xD (už tai numažinu vertinimą).
4 Stars I would recommend Secret Vampire for any teen girl because in encompasses a wide variety of genres into one book without going too heavily into any of them.
Among some of my favorites. Outstanding literary work. The characters are well developed, interesting. The liked characters are likable and the hated are unlikable. The writing is captivating enough to keep you interested until the end and leave you wanting more. It has a fairly original or uniquely well-developed plot. The pretense and romance were well balanced and done with properly distributed amounts of hints, behaviors, and chemistry. Not so much predictable if at all. Overall, loved it, I recommend reading!!

OKay....so this wasn't good by any means, but it was thoroughly entertaining and a very quick read. So basically, if you have any secret (or not so secret) love for shit TV shows like vampire diaries, this is right up your alley. L.J. Smith just has the teen vampire thing DOWN. I actually haven't read the Vampire Diaries books, so I don't know what they are like compared to the TV series, but as ridiculous as that is, I have a soft spot for teen vampires. Who doesn't love Damon Salvatore?? And thats kind of how I think I am going to feel about Ash in this series. I am not a fan ATM, but I'm sure something will change. None of these characters have any complexity or very compelling qualities, but its the kind of thing where you continue because you need to know what kind of hijinks they get into. How far will it go?
29 October 2020 I read it again! There's so much you realise and so many characters that we'll see in the later books!
19 May 2019 Secret Vampire is book 1 in the Night World series.
Poppy learns that she is suffering from an illness with no cure. James has a way to help her but this will mean she won't be able to see her family ever again.
I cannot get tired of reading this series!
17 December 2017 Re-read this book after quite some time. Absolutely love this series!
I kindof re read this book and I am feeling really nostalgic about it. This was my first of the Night world series. And so it holds a dear place in my heart. This was the book that led me into the NIGHT WORLD, The world that I thrive to live in.
Yes my fav L J Smith series is the Night World, and it means everything to me. It is a part of who I am.A world full of soulmates searching for each other and learning that above all LOVE is all that matters, This is also my best Fantasy read ever too.
Buddy read with Laura, i hope you like it more than I did.
This book was a total let down, the only thing I like about it is that it's fast paced. The plot is way to shallow with very little world building. The characters are boring and annoying, the main character is sooooo annoying like grow up already.
For a PNR, The love is almost non existent and not much is said about the vampire world, they kissed just once in the whole book 😞😞, like seriously.
I stood staring at my bookshelf two nights ago trying to decide what to read. My heart grabbed hold of Night World and was thrown back into a world of vampires, werewolves, and witches.
I'm not gonna lie to you, this is your basic teenage vampire story.
Poppy knows she's dying. She asks her best friend, James, to dig up some info on cancer. He realizes there's only one way to save her......turn her into a vampire. James knows there will be consequences to his actions, but he can't lose her. He and Poppy have been friends since Kindergarten. She's his best friend and he truly loves her. But the Night World Elders really don't care about love. They care about keeping their secret society from humans. That being said, James has broken several of their rules. He told a human about the Night World, he turned Poppy without any approval, and he loves the little mortal girl.
Yeah, so this is a nine book series and I devoured this one in a little over a day.
