She lives in the shadows but learns beauty can thrive in the dark.
When her older brother passes away after a rapid illness, Marianne Fox drops out of college to care for her broken-hearted mother. Only her mother can’t accept James’s sudden death, forcing Mari into an isolated existence, where she loses contact with everyone and slips out of the social grid. Working as a freelance fact checker and proofreader keeps her busy, dealing with her demanding author, Eric Summers. It leaves her time to care for her mother and their pup, Bear, and she can hide away from the world.
Mari doesn’t mind the dark and lonely nights in their farmhouse. She’s developed a rational way of dealing with things that go bump in the night, even faced with the derelict Rosewood Hall across the cornfields and Mr. Raggerty—the scarecrow that haunted her since she was a kid. As the lights flicker to life in Rosewood, Mari' is intrigued by her new neighbors. The derelict manor, practically crumbling into the earth, now seems to hold a glimmer of life. She meets the charming Ash Martin, the new tenant, who introduces her to his sister, Clover, a girl with a rare allergy to light. Clover's world, a dream-like realm of beauty, music, and shadows, captivates Mari. Surrounded by her plants and flowers that bloom under the moon, Clover lives a life that Mari could only dream of. Enthralled by her new friends, Mari is drawn into the enigmatic life of Ash and Clover. Clover believes in the magic of botany, that it can cure her illness, but Mari soon uncovers a darker truth. Something lurks in Rosewood's dark shadows: stone maidens with their faces covered, broken mirrors, and covered-up portraits. Clover is getting closer to finding her cure, walking in the daylight and growing stronger, while Mari grows sick, weak, and drained of life. Ash’s kisses are deadly, and she needs to stay away from Rosewood. Forced to confront her old life, bury old secrets, Mari must learn to believe in what she sees before she disappears into the shadows.
A gothic psychological horror from the author of The Wild Spirit Series.
Victoria lives in the UK, in rural Essex, with her husband, two daughters, and one very mischievous Bengal called Bella. She is the author of the YA book series Wild Spirit and writes mystery, fantasy, and gothic books for adults and teens. When she isn't writing and making up tales to scare her kids, you'll find her walking, reading, re-watching Buffy the Vampire slayer and running her children around like a taxi service.
Read over one VERY spooky night, this book is on my top recommendations for the year now.
Atmospheric it gave me goosebumps several times and left me unsettled (so NO sleep once I was done)
Mari lives in isolation. Mari accepted dark things happen, trauma stays with you like a tattoo and sometimes it's best to only rely on yourself. The deserted Rosewood Hall across the cornfields have haunted Mari since she was young, and she's found coping methods- but when new neighbors arrive, Mari opens herself to some friend. While Clover and Ash bring light to Mari's world everything is not as it seems. Mari uncovers secrets and scares and I literally could not stop reading last night.
Released TODAY, it is now available with Kindle and paperback on Amazon. I loved it enough that I need a physical copy, but thank Book Sirens and the author for the opportunity to read and review prior to release.
I received this as an advanced readers copy & I am telling you right now- GO & GET THIS BOOK WHEN IT COMES OUT IN OCTOBER.
I love many books but few can ever knock my top favorites out of there spot but I think this has been my favorite read of the year. I didn’t sleep because I was too busy devouring every word.
tragedy, hope & loneliness can create a deadly concoction. There is so much real and raw emotion woven into the entire story. I had my thoughts & ideas but was pleasantly surprised when I didn’t see certain things coming.
I will absolutely be getting a physical copy to enjoy over and over. I think this is also a perfect story for a fall read.
I felt like there were multiple parts where I was grieving and reeling right along side Mari. This was one of the biggest selling points to me outside of the mystery because I have a lot of trouble connecting with MCs a lot of the time.
Creepy and atmospheric and full of subtle tension at the perfect moments. This is a book you’ll want to pick up on a crisp autumn night and devour through the evening (preferably in front of a fireplace)! This was fast paced and despite that, I felt like I got to know the character of Mari so well. It was a refreshing take on the overly done tropes of horror perfectly blended with atmospheric prose and all the spooky vibes. 10/10
Wow! Another fantastic book by Victoria Wren. I think I loved this even more than the Wild Spirit series. It’s so magical and dark in ways I wasn’t expecting. The lore is deep and beautifully crafted, and though it was a slow burn, it came to such a satisfying conclusion. I loved the hints from Wren’s other books too, a little bonus tidbit for the fans that paid off very nicely! I really think Victoria was born to be a writer and I’ll read anything that she writes!
I had the honour of reading this book in its early days, and now I've finished it as a complete book. What a wonder to behold. It's out October 22nd!!
Victoria is the author of one of my favourite fantasy series', Wild Spirit. This book being set in the same universe was just perfect. Little snippets here and there, but still a new situation and new characters.
Mari's life is not so good. Her father is not in the picture. Her brother has passed away from a quick and cruel disease. Her mother is consumed by grief. Her best friend no longer her best friend for some serious accusations that were made against her brother while he was alive. Mari lives in darkness, proofreading for an author from the comfort of her home. She does have the terrifying Mr. Raggety outside her window though, and the gothic manor house in the distance. It's there she meets Ash. A newcomer. A distraction. He has a sister, Clover, who suffers from an illness where she can't go in the light. Desperate to find a cure, Clover attempts anything possible.
Weird towns. Missing people. Rainy stormy days. Mari is in for one hell of a ride. The truth about the town, it's present, it's past, it's residents... is all about to be revealed. It won't be pretty and Mari will be right in the middle.
A gothic horror set for new adults, this is an gripping and eerie tale. Mari is a relatable character and her emotions sweep through the pages. You can understand how her vulnerability makes her do potentially dangerous things. Sometimes you want to shout at her, sometimes you want to hug her.
When I read this the first time, the plot twist shocked me. I didn't expect it. Victoria reveals it slowly. Making you believe one thing, then changing it, then second guessing yourself again. Making you feel like Mari herself with all the confusion and questions. From romance to horror to romance to folklore and creepy historical tales... This book has something for everyone.
A beaut of its genre and I highly recommend. Especially to those who love fantasy on the dark side. This book is truly a dream. I love it now, and I'd have loved it as a teen.
This is the perfect spooky season read! Such a unique concept and beautifully executed. It was very atmospheric and haunting. It may you feel sympathy for the characters, but things weren’t all that they seemed! It kept you guessing about what type of “monster” she was dealing with and it made me have to keep reading because I needed to find out 🤣. It also covers a few dark themes, so check the triggers before reading! Recommend gothic horror read
Thank you, Victoria Wren, for the ARC of Night Blooming. This was my first YA gothic horror, and I loved it! I’m used to more adult storylines associated with gothic horror, so it was interesting to see it from a younger perspective. I really enjoyed the portrayal of the adage: people will show you what/ who they are. The pacing was perfect, the spooky factor was there, and I thoroughly enjoyed the plot and twists!

First of all, can we just admire that gorgeous cover? Secondly, I did not expect to enjoy this book as much as I did. Yes, I sort of guessed what was going on, but I was swept up in the drama and story. Brilliantly written. Gripping and eerie. My first book by this author. I may have to check out the Wild Spirit Series as I've seen it around a lot. Highly recommended for lovers of YA, horror and gothic thrillers.
Received this ARC ahead of publication in exchange for my review. The intended demographic is 'young adult '. Due to be published 22/10/2024.
I love horror and it's such a huge genre with a ton of different avenues that it can explore to get the desired effect of giving a scare. I loved the subtlety of this one as it took you along a slow journey through Mari's adventure as the horrors unwind.
There are a number of themes to explore with Mari and these were done sensitively and in a way that helped build your relationship with her as a character. I liked her and was hoping to see her come through the darkness and back into the light! The themes relating to Marie's relationships with family and friends run well and in parallel to the supernatural/horror theme. The issues she experiences does help to fuel some of the negative goings on too essentially showing us that Mari's way of dealing with things adds to her vulnerability and feeds the darkness around her.
There was certainly some good hooks to provide some scares to a younger audience. I'm a seasoned horror fiend so it's hard to get a scare out of me but I did enjoy reading this. Loved the scarecrow and can understand Mari's feelings about him.
[ARC Review - I received this copy in exchange for an honest review]
This book, perfect for the spooky season, masterfully blends mystery, psychological horror, and a powerful exploration of grief, loss, and loneliness. The main character resonated deeply with me, and I found myself fully immersed in the atmospheric world-building. The plot was enticing, and the subtle Cedar Wood references beautifully interwoven as the story's developed.
I loved the satisfaction of seeing a favourite character reappear, adding depth to the story's universe. The twist was dark and well-executed, and I devoured the final 20%, rooting hard for the protagonist. The power of friendship was a major theme, adding emotional weight to the thriller aspects.
Unlike many mysteries with vague or unsatisfying conclusions, this book offered a perfect ending—tying up enough loose ends while still leaving me wanting more. The protagonist's arc felt complete, yet her story seems far from over.
This is one of my favourite reads of 2024, and I can’t wait for the author’s next work. I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a spooky, seamless blend of contemporary and supernatural storytelling.
I wasn’t sure what to expect exactly when I picked out this book but I was intrigued. It was one wild ride that I am so happy to have been on! The characters were so thought out and felt complete. The plot was there and so good! It kept me on my toes, at first I was like ok I think I know what’s going on…. But I was not even close! Mari broke my heart, her and Zara’s story shattered me but the healing between them was everything! I am so looking forwarded to hopefully A LOT of adventures for Mari, Evan and Gabriel! I gave it 4 stars instead of 5 because of how long it took me to get into the book. Don’t let that scare you though because once I was in, I was in 100%!
Thank you so much to the author and BookSirens for allowing me to get my hands on this early!

I've been somewhat addicted to Victoria Wren's books for a while now. Her Wild Spirit series was utterly captivating (seriously, go read those if you haven't) so I was curious to see how this new venture would go. Needless to say, I wasn't disappointed. This gothic tale ticks so many boxes that you'd want for a creepy, atmospheric read. Compelling characters, themes of loneliness, creepy secrets and surprise twists. It's got everything. There are also some amazing surprises that fans of Victoria's other works will be thrilled about!
Overall, this is an outstanding book, one that really showcases Victoria's prowess as an author. She's able to create real characters that you immediately identify and empathise with, all set against fantastic world building that hooks you in from the instant you start reading. Absolutely love this book, and can't wait for what's next from Victoria Wren!
This was my first book by Victoria Wren and it was a great one to start with! Loved the creepy atmosphere that went throughout the whole book and that suspense had me wondering the whole time about what would become of Mari! Had a feeling Ash and Clover would end up being something along the lines of what Wren created them to be (trying not to spoil anything) but I’m glad she didn’t go the stereotypical route most writers would with that type of character. Overall good read that’s definitely perfect for October! 🎃 So grab your fuzzy blanket, apple cider/hot chocolate, curl up by the fire and read this book! 👻
Thank you to Victoria Wren and Booksirens for the ARC!
I received this as an ARC in return for my honest review.
Night Blooming by Victoria Wren is a gothic horror novel set in a secluded farmhouse. The story revolves around Marianne Fox, who is struggling to cope with grief and the mysterious presence of a neighboring mansion. As Marianne delves deeper into the mansion's secrets, she uncovers a dark history and a sinister force that threatens her own safety.
The novel explores themes of loss, isolation, and the supernatural, with a focus on creating a chilling and atmospheric setting.
I found it to be a bit predictable, but I'm also pretty good at guessing twists in books. This was overall a good read, and I'd be interested to see if there is a series.
"It was disconcerting just how comfortable the shadows had become."
I confess that this story is one of my favorite gothic stories. I loved it from the beginning to the end... A very atmospheric story that raises many emotions and captures the interest from the beginning! It is worth reading especially on a fall evening with burning candles and the wind blowing strongly outside... Don't miss it!
The opening chapter to this had my heart rate through the roof the one thing that scares me is scarecrows in cornfields, so I had high hopes. While the story was good I was expecting more. The concept and characters were really interesting. It was a good read just not what I thought I was going to get.

Victoria Wren has an incredible knack for writing the macabre and the beautiful. This book dripped gothic atmosphere with its crumbling mansions, cracked mirrors, and creeping monsters.
I loved that Mari was such an isolated character, it made her relationship with Ash and Clover all the more interesting. I honestly couldn’t predict what was going to to happen next or how everything was connected which made for a fantastic read.
Perfect for fans of Erin Craig’s The House Of Roots and Ruin.
Oh. My. God. This was a fantastic read! I don't usually go for horror/ thriller because I'm that rare type of person who watched The Ring and was so bored I don't remember much. But this story pulls you in, keeps you guessing, and is filled with amazing descriptions.
There is definitely suspense, and moments where you might forget to breathe as you get wrapped up in the tension.
Mari is a loner. She did it to herself and has created excuses around why she allows herself to be cut off from society. However, when brother and sister, Ash and clover, move next door, she is forced out of her self-imposed confinement. Ash pushes her outside of her comfort zone making her confront her fears and guilt head-on. But, something isn't quite right about the siblings. Can straight-laced, unbelieving Mari allow herself to see the truth before it's too late?
If you loved the Wild Spirit series, this will add a whole new layer to that realm. And if you haven't read that series yet, you'll be entranced enough to find out what it's all about. But don't worry, you won't miss anything starting with this book. It's a story all on it's own.
Being this my first novel by Victoria Wren I can understand why she's popular within the YA world.
Marianne Fox is a 19 year-old girl living alone with her sick mother after her eldest brother passes away as a result of a terrible illness. She's got used to living in the dark and isolated from the world ever since. Having dropped out from college, she makes a living as a proofreader and editor, a job that can keep her away from any in-person contact.
Although she's hardly content with living such a life, she's somehow resigned to living it until some people move to the nearby and in really bad shape manor (the Rosewood manor). It is then that she meets Ash Martin and shortly after his sister Clover, a girl with a very rare skin disease and who works with plants trying to find a cure to her disease. The Martins seem to bring some joy to Marianne's life, but the more she gets to know them, the weaker she starts to feel.
Who are really the Martins and how are they linked to Marianne's feeling sick? What might be hidden behind their too-good-to-be-true appearance? Isolated from all the ones who once cared for her and with a sick mother, there doesn't seem to be much hope. It looks like only by being resilient will Marianne be able to save the day.
Considering the fact the book characters in the novel are youngsters, I sometimes felt upset about Marianne's actions and decisions, but one has to keep in mind we were also teenagers once, right?
Something that caught my attention prior to start reading the novel is the warning from the writer about the mention of some difficult topics like rape, cancer, and dealing with grief. Our society nowadays has become quite sensitive and/or reluctant to hear, see or read about certain topics, but just because such society decides to ignore all of it that doesn't make it nonexistent. However, if reading about any of the above mentioned makes you ill, then you may as well decide not to read this book.

"Night Blooming" took me on a captivating journey that was darker than I initially anticipated. The book delves into themes of isolation and introspection, exploring the depths of Mari's character in a hauntingly beautiful way. Wren’s writing style is nothing short of lyrical; her prose flows effortlessly, painting vivid imagery that immerses you in the story.
Mari’s isolation really struck a chord with me. Her struggles felt authentic and raw, making her a compelling protagonist whose journey I was eager to follow. The darkness woven throughout the narrative added a layer of complexity that kept me on my toes—there were moments that surprised me with their intensity, enhancing the emotional weight of the story.
Wren’s ability to craft such an evocative atmosphere and the rich character development made this a memorable read. This was such a beautifully dark tale that will linger in your mind, and I can't wait to see where Wren takes her storytelling next. Four stars!

This was an incredible book and I was very impressed with the writing skill that the author had! I loved the depth that the characters had and how complex Mari’s character was! That aspect alone made her much more realistic and relatable.
The plot was very intense, especially in the last seventy pages or so! I seriously couldn’t put it down for those last several chapters!
The only reason this book gets four stars from me and not five is that I don’t really love the thriller/horror genre as much as other genres so it was a little hard for me to get into. But I know people who love horror will absolutely devour this book!

I recieved this book for free as an arc in exchange for an honest review. Thanks to booksirens and the author.
What an original story! I feel like the author grabbed concepts and ideas that already exist, but she made something completely new and original!! She added botany to the plot, which was great. I dont think ive ever read something like this. She made me fall in love with all the characters, she made me understand them even when they were wrong, which is a really hard thing to do. Its hard to make people like the ugly characters, but she managed to do it. This is a great great book. I will keep up with the author, she did something great here! Definitely loved it.
Loved this book!! If you're looking for a short, gothic novel this fall, I highly recommend!! Great character development/growth, talked about important issues (there are trigger warnings at the beginning of the book as well), nothing frustrated me (like no 'annoying tropes' or anything like that), it was exciting (esp the second half !!), and I liked the references to her other series (thou you can read this without reading her other series!). *received an advanced digital copy for an honest review*
What a fantastic read, enjoyed every moment of reading this book. If you are a fan of gothic stories with a spooky atmosphere, this book is for you. This was one of very few books where I really felt for the main character, the grief, the isolation made me feel emotional at times. I loved the mystery aspect of it and couldn’t wait to find out what was going on, last but not least, the book cover is just gorgeous! I will look into reading more books from this author.

This was a book which I, just, couldn’t put down. The plot drew me in from the start and wouldn’t let me go. Mari’s home life helped to establish her character, which was beautifully crafted and developed further as the story progressed. From the first time I ‘met’ Ash and Clover, I was aware that something wasn’t right, but I wasn’t prepared for the horror that was the real Ash and Clover. I enjoyed the slow buildup which lead to the explosion of horror at the end of the story. A great book; true horror; this is a book which can be read multiple times, and always enjoy.
The whole time I was reading this story, I kept getting Stephen King vibes. The whole thing is creepy with people not really being what they appear to be. Not to mention, Mari’s past and especially her present dealing with her mother after her brother died and losing her best friend in the process. I have the feeling this is one story I won’t be forgetting for a long, long time and just hope I don’t have nightmares about it. It’s very well written and the plot moves right along.
The twist and turns that I didn't see coming have made this a great spooky season read! It has all the gloomy weather, mysterious new neighbors, rundown old mansions, and a girl allergic to sunlight. What could you possibly want more in a gothic novel this time of year! I highly recommend this book. I haven't read this author before but I'm adding her series to my TBR because I very much enjoy her writing style!
It felt flat. The most interesting secret will be explored on the second book, which is unfair. The main plot, explained on the synopsis starts halfway through the book, and then you are like “what is going on?” and the end. So… It was… a reading… It looked interesting. But the theme, gothic? 100%
The perfect fall read. Mysterious and captivating. This book will keep you drawn into the mysterious life of Mari during her time of grief. She clings onto her new neighbors that move into what she believed to be an abandoned house. Mari finds herself drawn to the intriguing life of Ash and Clover. What's their story?
