Fan-tas-tic! One of the best Kleypas' I've read. Why have I waited so long to read this book?
Spinster novelist Amanda Briars doesn't want to celebrate her 30th birthday as a virgin, so she decides to hire the services of Mrs. Gemma Bradshaw, a well-established madam (whom anyone who's read Worth Any Price should recognize), to find her a suitable man to take care of her, er, "problem". Unbeknownst to Amanda, Mrs. Bradshaw decides to play matchmaker and sends her publisher Jack Devlin in lieu of the male prostitue Amanda is expecting.
Jack is London's most successful publisher, the bastard child of a nobleman who's never acknowledged him. During a conversation with Mrs. Bradshaw - no, he isn't one of her customers; he's just the publisher of her book "The Sins of Madam B" - he mentions that he's just bought Ms. Briars' 1st (unpublished) novel "An Unfinished Lady" and his intention of becoming acquainted with her so they could work together and "polish" the novel for publication. Claiming a friendship with Amanda and failing to mention all the relevant facts, Mrs. Bradshaw sends Jack to Amanda's house at the specific date and time the hired prostitute should be knocking on Amanda's door. Needless to say, Amanda mistakes Jack for the prostitute and he's a little confused at first, not understanding what she's talking about. Being an intelligent man, Jack quickly realizes what's going on and is rather amused. Does he come clean and tells her who he is? Of course not! He goes with the flow and gives her the best birthday present ever. ;) However, he isn't a cad, so he doesn't take her virginity. He does leave without revealing his identity, though.
Jack knows Amanda is going to find out who he is soon enough - after all, he still wants to publish her novel and needs to discuss that project with her. He also knows he's going to have a hard time convincing her to work with him, considering how he "tricked" her on their 1st meeting. But he isn't a successful businessman for nothing and he always gets what he wants... So they start working together and what begins as a professional relationship becomes more personal and complicated than any of them expected.
I have to say, I was a little worried when I began reading this book, because the premise wasn't exactly to my liking. Amanda's bold behavior, hiring a prostitute to rid her of her virginity, seemed rather stupid to me and I was afraid she would be aquirky silly heroine who would spend the whole book doing "daring" things only to be saved by the hero. Thankfully, I was wrong. Amanda was one of the best heroines I've ever met: she was smart, assertive, sensitive and sensible. I couldn't help loving her and rooting for her HEA, even when she did something that made me raise my eyebrows in doubt. I won't give any spoilers away here; I'll just say that I usually hate when a heroine does what she did, but I found myself unable to condemn Amanda for her actions. They made sense, considering the circumstances and the time she lived in.
On his part, Jack was the stuff my dreams are made of. He was smitten with Amanda from the start - because of her work, which he truly admired and respected, because of her compelling personality and because of her plump and curvy figure. He definitely knew how to show how much he appreciated her sexy body. The love scenes in this book were sizzling hot! Some of the things that Jack did with Amanda were very kinky and I'd never seen them outside the erotica/romantica genre before. WTG, Ms. Kleypas!
The pace of this story was kind of slow, in a good way. Despite their steamy 1st meeting, Jack and Amanda's relationship didn't feel rushed. Ms. Kleypas gave them time to actually know each other, building their sexual tension to the sky before allowing them to take their relationship to the next level. Then, as I was getting ready to enjoy the HEA, an unexpected event added some heartbreaking angst to the book. I was taken aback at first, wondering where the hell that had come from, but as my heartbeat slowed down, I realized that that event made their HEA more believable. Not to mention, I really enjoyed the way Jack dealt with the situation. *lusty grin*

This started out well. Intriguing really.
Amanda, the heroine, hires a male prostitute for her 30th birthday because she has no intention of getting married anymore, believing that her time has passed. Of course there is a mix up and the hero, Jack, is the one to arrive at her house which leads her to mistake him for the other guy.
Interesting right?! Especially in a historical context. But it all kinda went downhill from there. I mean, there was nothing particularly wrong with the rest of the book, it was just fine. I didn’t really feel the connection between the two leads and the conflict wasn’t all that interesting.
What I did like was that Amanda was a successful novelist and Jack helped her go and do bigger, greater things in terms of her career. There were a lot of feminist ideas interspersed in the story.

This was my second time reading Suddenly You, but I had read it so long ago that I couldn't remember anything about the plot. Either it didn't make much of an impression, or (and this was the most likely scenario) I was going through Kleypas books too fast to savor the sweet taste.
Upon second reading, I can definitely say that this was another winner from this author. No, it wasn't my favorite book ever, but it was a really good romance from a really talented writer.
So, Amanda hires a hooker for her 30th birthday, because she doesn't want to die a virgin. <--and who can blame her? She's a successful novelist who, due to taking on the role of caregiver to her ailing parents, missed the window of opportunity to snag herself a man.
Too bad, so sad. But other than that one little thing she's mostly happy with her life. Especially the amount of freedom and independence she has because of her advanced age (30!) and the ability to make her own money.
BUT.
Due to the madam at the brothel having a wicked sense of humor, Amanda mistakes book publishing powerhouse, Jack Devlin, as her paid escort - and he doesn't bother to correct her.
And so begins a steamy romance between the spinsterish author and the dark and moody publisher.
It was an excellent book right until the end, at which point it went off the rails...like a lot of romances do. And instead of just ending when they would have both organically realized that they loved each other, the plot turned into a lot of unnecessary drama that didn't actually add anything to the story. And then, just when you thought it was over? There was yet another unnecessary piece of added drama -->
Then again, I'm the asshole who skims the love scenes in books and fast forwards through them in movies. So, maybe I'm not the best person to judge the 'romance level' for this sort of thing.
Regardless, this was still a (mostly) adorable book, and pretty much what I've come to expect from this author.

Me encanta Lisa Kleypas y esta novela es un gran exponente de lo que se le da mejor: crear personajes masculinos inolvidables, de esos que hacen arder enaguas y explotar ovarios. Y Jack Devlin, el protagonista de esta historia, no es una excepción. No solo es un sinvergüenza fuerte y guapo, sino que es un feminista avant la lettre, que trata a su mujer como una igual y se pasa por el forro de la levita las convenciones sociales, la diferencia de edad y lo que se le ponga por delante para conseguir a su amada Amanda. Y, por si fuera poco, es un hombre hecho a sí mismo, con un pasado repleto de dificultades, incluido pasar parte de su infancia en un horrendo colegio al más puro estilo David Copperfield. A ver quién es la guapa que no se enamora.
Por su parte, la protagonista es una mujer fuerte, una solterona de 30 años (considerada vieja en esa época, ahora sería una joven liberada), inteligente y exhuberante con ideas maravillosas, como esa que da pie a toda la novela, y otras no tan acertadas, que entiendo que la autora utiliza para hacer avanzar la trama, pero que a mí me han molestado por no encajar con su carácter abierto y sincero. De ahí las 4 estrellas.
Relectura para el #RetoIntimo2018 del 22 al 23 enero. Me reafirmo con Jack Devlin y le subo una estrella. On fire estoy con este maravilloso personaje.

A new book-boyfriend for me! He's half Irish, dark hair with blue eyes, loves reading and books, and empowers his woman.
"Good," he said softly. "Set the world afire. Just let me hand you the matches."

"I'll give our son the best of everything. I'm going to spoil the hell out of him, and send him to the best schools, and when he comes back from his grand tour, he's going to run Devlin's for me."
"What if we have a girl?"
"Then she'll run it for me," came his prompt reply.
"Silly man, a woman could never do such a thing."
My daughter could," he informed her.
At least it was a pretty explosion...

Jack Devlin is sexier than sin. Amanda is funny, innocent, but also smart and pragmatic. I loved both characters and felt like they made a great couple. Definitely a fun Historical Romance.

The spice had a modern vibes because both characters were independent, sexually open (to a degree lol) and really had no other motives to get buzzzzzy but for the fact that they find each other attractive. Spice is quality but so is THIS MAN!! Jack had me giggling and I just loved how he brought the serious & proper Amanda out of her shell.

My Review:
What an absolute joy it was to read this book! Jack and Amanda are wonderful characters, in and of themselves, but bring them together and you have magic!
I love the way Lisa Kleypas defines and develops her characters, making them larger than life but at the same time keeping them grounded in reality. They may have fancy houses and more money than they can spend in one lifetime, but they always have to deal with the same things we mere mortals do – life. I find that I become easily invested them, wanting them to have joy, passion and love, and this tells me that she writes people, not just characters. And her storylines are believable - situations we can, in some way relate to, if not directly than because she knows how to reach us through our shared humanness.
I think my favorite thing about Jack and Amada is their independence, each one believing that they could never marry because that would mean giving up control to another person. Yet when they came together, these two fiercely opinionated and independent people, found in each other not the conflicts they had feared, but someone to share their hopes and dreams with. They helped each other through difficult times and shared in the joy of their triumphs.
Can you tell how much I love them?
It’s amazing to me that one author can consistently write stories upon stories upon stories which always bring a smile to my face and leaves me with fond memories of characters I’ve come to know as old friends. Discovering Lisa Kleypas has been one of the highlights of my reading adventures.

I have read and enjoyed this author's contemporary books. I will definitely be checking out some more of her historical

Lately, I've been let down too many times by the romance genre so I chose a tried and loved author to pick up my dragging rating. Aannnd... Finally! A well written romance with enjoyable characters and nice story. My ovaries wants to thank LK!

Nope, not a Teddy Bear with a strap on like my last unfortunate read, but a man-whore? hmm, male escort? a lord of the night! And she hits Jack-pot! *yes, I'm very proud of myself for that play with the name of hero *

I loved the characters, enjoyed their banter and the build up of their relationship. The background was a bit different than most historical romances, since these were upper-middle class characters. I don't know if this would be a 5 stars reading experience any other time but fuck that. 5 stars it is

I loved the characters, enjoyed their banter and the build up of their relationship. The background was a bit different than most historical romances, since these were upper-middle class characters. I don't know if this would be a 5 stars reading experience any other time but fuck that. 5 stars it is

I’m not sure where to start. Well, I’m still ambivalent about this one. On the one hand, it was undoubtedly an entertaining read. On the other hand, the romance aspect of this book failed me big time.
This one had an interesting plot. Not quite as original as the author’s other books I’ve read, but still good. For the most part, it was a decent read but there were a few things that ticked me off.
As I already mentioned, I wasn’t impressed with the romance part. In my opinion, Jack and Amanda’s chemistry felt totally forced. And frankly, my major problem with this aspect was Jack. I hate it when the hero chooses not to fight for the heroine just because he thinks he doesn’t deserve her. I was very disappointed in Jack. He loved her. Wanted her badly. But he dumped her! And then tried to convince himself that he did it for her own good. Why did he let his tough upbringing keep him from having a happy future with the only woman he loved? That was weak and stupid! Argh, I hate this kind of hero!
Well, perhaps he was right. Amanda deserved better than him. She deserved someone who would fight to the end of the world for her. Someone who wouldn’t hesitate at the chance to be with her every day. Someone who would never ever let her go!
And speaking of Amanda, I must admit I didn’t know what to think about her at first. She was sort of meh for me. But as I read further into the story, I began to warm up to her a little. I can’t say I totally enjoyed her character, even so, somewhere towards the end of the book, she really got better.
Due to my high expectations, this one fell somewhat flat. Although many parts of the story were good, I wanted something else. I wanted to feel the real chemistry between them. I wanted a little bit more excitement and drama. I just wished Jack could be a desirable hero whom I couldn’t say no to.
Sadly, I got none. I felt like I expected a lot but got less in return.
I’m not quite sure whether to rate this one 2 or 3 stars, but since I never once felt like putting it aside and started reading something else, I think I’m going with 3 stars.

I listened to this one on audio and had such a hard time connecting to the characters. I LOVED the beginning when Amanda hired a male escort and thought that was Jack when he arrived, so they had a passionate encounter together. However, as the story went on, I felt less and less interested in the story and thought there were way too many intimate scenes between the couple that became repetitive to me. I needed more substance to their relationship than just the physical and had trouble finding that in this book.
I thought the final conflict was resolved way too quickly, and while the story itself wasn't horrible, it's nothing memorable or exciting

Este libro fue mi debut con Lisa Kleypas, el que hizo que me enganchara con sus libros, la primera vez que lo leí me gustó mucho y esta segunda caso raro pero me gustó más que la primera ME ENCANTÓ!! Y por eso le voy a subir una estrella.
Es de los libros más sexys que he leído en romántica histórica, con unos personajes con una gran personalidad, contiene diálogos divertidos e ingeniosos, las escenas de sexo son SOOO HOT, una narración ágil y fluida es uno de mis libros favoritos de la autora
Desde la primera página me atrapó y comienza con Amanda una novelista de fama ascendente pero solterona y virgen que acude a un burdel para contratar a un gigoló para que le haga el “favocito” como regalo de su trigésimo cumpleaños. Al mero día se arrepiente y está decidida a decírselo al hombre al que acude a la cita que para su sorpresa resulta ser sexy como el infierno, cautivador y rechaza sus negativas regalándole una noche de placer pero sin que ella pierda su virginidad por que el está seguro que se volverán a ver.
Y por supuesto que se vuelven a ver, porque él no resulta ser lo que ella pensaba, sino que es uno de los editores más famosos, exitosos y sin escrúpulos de toda Inglaterra, dueño de una editorial y librería y quiere trabajar con ella.
Amanda es una protagonista, independiente, fuerte, de gran intelecto, es apasionada y divertida, una mujer muy talentosa que a pesar de estar sola ha salido adelante, es de esas mujeres adelantadas a su época, como toda mujer es insegura de sus físico. Ella quiere un hombre que sea su compañero y que le tenga afecto pero Jack le hará desear algo más.
Sólo hay una palabra para describir a Jack y es D E L I C I O S O!!! Mon Dieu Este hombre es capaz de incendiar un castillo, derretir un iceberg y hacer caer mis enaguas es perfecto para ser My future Husband, es de mis protagonistas de histórica que más me gustan, Sexy, hot, altamente follable LO QUIERO EN MI CAMA #Diositohazmeelmilagro
Lo que más me gustó de Jack aparte de que sea un experto experimentado en la cama, es juguetón, divertido un embaucador sin vergüenza con un corazón de oro y él no se da cuenta que es un gran hombre digno de ser feliz pero sobre todo apoya a Amanda la incita a que sea mejor no la limita al contrario le da alas para que ella se realice profesionalmente y me encantó cuando le dijo que no sólo se enamoró de su físico sino de su cerebro.
Oh por cierto antes de este libro leí el de Hello Stranger y siento que Lisa Kleypas se basó mucho en Jack para el personaje de Ethan aunque en lo personal me gusta más Jack.
Sin duda algunos libros de histórica son más feministas que los propios de contemporánea y este es un gran ejemplo de ello.

If you love someone you cannot help but have sex with them.
If you have great sex with someone you must love them.
If you love someone it is okay to blackmail them into having sex with you because you are meant to be together.
In addition to not agreeing with any of these underlying romantic principles and finding the initial set up entirely implausible, I found the story strangely lacking in tension or conflict. Still, it was sort of nice to see grown-up, relatively mature and rational characters instead of ones who act like hysterical and possibly retarded children, as so many romance protagonists seem to. Nice for them that they got some orgasms and marriage and stuff.

Amanda Briars is unmarried and about to turn 30-years old. She’s an accomplished novelist, independent and self sufficient in an era that’s pretty hard on women without husbands (19th century London). But, she does not want to reach that age milestone without experiencing carnal love. So, she discreetly arranges with the town’s brothel owner for a man. The next day, a gentleman shows up on her doorstep the very next day. Jack Devlin is a successful publisher, known for printing some racy material. He’s got a bit of a reputation but that’s not stopping him from trying to sign on Amanda...as a client and a lover.
I chose this book because I liked the idea of an older, independent woman in 1800s England. It turned out to be a delightful story as Amanda was smart and talented, Jack an extremely interesting and complicated man. Their first encounter was sensual and their relationship evolved slowly throughout the book. The banter was clever and funny but the serious moments were just as compelling. The later conflicts were inevitable, as we were forewarned, and they were handled well, despite a lapse in ethical behavior on Amanda’s part.
This was my first experience with the narrator, Beverley Crick, and I really enjoyed her performance. Kleypas is one of my favorite authors so I had high expectations that were more than met. I hated when the story ended as I liked being in Amanda and Jack’s world. The epilogue, however, left me in a really good place.

Me gustó, pero la verdad tenía más expectativas. A pesar de los buenos comentarios que tiene este libro en GR y de que Lisa Kleypas es mi autora favorita en romántica, me quedé con un regustillo de desencanto.
Como siempre, sus personajes son magníficos, pero sentí este libro tan corto que no alcancé a disfrutarlos como me hubiera gustado. Todo pasó tan rápido que no me alcanzaron a calar.
En todo caso, la lectura se disfruta mucho; los diálogos y las situaciones tienen el inconfundible sello Kleypas; como siempre la ambientación de época es impecable y tiene la originalidad de sacarnos de la ya tan manida aristocracia inglesa.

A- for both narration and content, that's 4.5 stars founded up.
I was really pleased to see that some of Lisa Kleypas’ older, previously un-recorded/out of print titles are making their way into audio format, and even moreso when Suddenly You popped up at Audible with Beverley A. Crick as the narrator. (I’m not so pleased that Tantor’s next foray into Ms. Kleypas��� backlist, Someone to Watch Over Me, uses one of the worst narrators I’ve ever heard, but that’s another story!)
Suddenly You was originally published in 2001, and it’s easy to understand why it’s such a firm favourite with many. It’s got a higher steam-quotient than some of the author’s other books dating from this period, but the thing I most enjoyed about it was the way in which the hero is so completely smitten with the heroine from the outset and is wonderfully supportive and encouraging of her throughout.
Amanda Briars is a successful novelist, a forward-thinking and independent woman who doesn’t shy away from tackling difficult subjects in her books, sometimes finding herself targeted by those who insist that her themes are not sufficiently ‘improving’ or ladylike. Those voices don’t worry her, and in the professional sphere, she’s imaginative and confident. But in the personal one, she’s a perennial wallflower. Having realised in her youth that she wasn’t much to look at, she decided to cultivate her mind instead, and after having spent several years caring for her invalid father before his death, she’s reached the age of thirty without having seen much of life and without having any admirers or lovers – she’s never even been kissed. She’s unfashionably plump, short of stature, and possessed of a riotous mass of reddish-brown curls, but although she knows she’s destined to remain a spinster, that doesn’t mean she has to live the rest of her life without experiencing the thrill of passion. So she discreetly approaches the madam of London’s most high-class brothel and asks her to procure her some male company for the evening of her thirtieth birthday a few days hence.
But by the time her birthday comes around, Amanda has changed her mind. As a woman whose livelihood depends to an extent on public opinion, the possibility of discovery and ruin are playing on her mind, so when she opens the door to her ‘present’, she tells him of her change of heart and offers payment – but he very charmingly refuses to accept either, and somehow, she ends up inviting him in for a drink. He’s absolutely gorgeous of course, and Amanda finds herself reluctantly drawn to him, even though her rational mind tells her that it’s his job to flatter a woman and make her feel wanted. She tells him she knows she’s not a beauty and that he shouldn’t try to pretend otherwise but can’t help the stirring of pleasure deep inside each time he makes it clear he finds her attractive. Realising suddenly that this is one night on which she might say and do anything she wants because she’ll never see this man again, Amanda decides to allow herself to be seduced.
Jack Devlin, the bastard son of a dissolute nobleman and an Irish housemaid, has worked hard to make something of his life and is looking to expand his successful publishing business. To this end, he makes his way to the home of novelist Amanda Briers with the intention of speaking to her about his plans to publish her work – and instead finds himself mistaken for the prostitute she has hired for the evening. Surprised that a woman as lovely as Amanda would need to do such a thing, slightly amused at the mistake and immediately smitten, Jack decides to play along. It’s clear from the start that he’s attracted to Amanda’s mind as well as her lush body; before he even met her he liked and admired her work and he quickly realises that for all her intelligence and skill as a writer, Amanda lacks self-confidence and deserves to be seen and treated as the desirable woman she is.
Jack knows, of course, that his deception will become apparent pretty quickly, especially as he still intends to approach Amanda about publishing her work. Naturally, she’s not at all pleased at having been deceived and at first tries to refuse to have anything to do with Jack or his business. Beverley A. Crick does a splendid job with the narration of this audiobook, which I’m sure will come as no surprise to anyone who is familiar with her work. Her pacing is just right, her delivery is smooth and easy on the ear, and her performances are always emotionally resonant, pulling the listener right into the story and the characters’ experiences. Most importantly for a romance audio, she is able to convey the intimacy necessary to create a believable connection between the hero and heroine and performs both characters extremely well. Jack is half Irish and the text indicates that his speech is accented; the accent Ms. Crick employs is accurate and consistent (in spite of the odd wobble!) and she makes him sound masculine and sexy, while her portrayal of Amanda encompasses her fierce intelligence as well as her vulnerabilities. Secondary characters are performed and differentiated appropriately throughout, and as always, she’s spot on in the more romantic and emotional moments. In a year that’s been sadly bereft of good historical romance in both print and audio, Suddenly You was delight to listen to, and I’m more than happy to recommend it.

I was really pleased to see that some of Lisa Kleypas’ older, previously un-recorded/out of print titles are making their way into audio format, and even moreso when Suddenly You popped up at Audible with Beverley A. Crick as the narrator. (I’m not so pleased that Tantor’s next foray into Ms. Kleypas��� backlist, Someone to Watch Over Me, uses one of the worst narrators I’ve ever heard, but that’s another story!)
Suddenly You was originally published in 2001, and it’s easy to understand why it’s such a firm favourite with many. It’s got a higher steam-quotient than some of the author’s other books dating from this period, but the thing I most enjoyed about it was the way in which the hero is so completely smitten with the heroine from the outset and is wonderfully supportive and encouraging of her throughout.
Amanda Briars is a successful novelist, a forward-thinking and independent woman who doesn’t shy away from tackling difficult subjects in her books, sometimes finding herself targeted by those who insist that her themes are not sufficiently ‘improving’ or ladylike. Those voices don’t worry her, and in the professional sphere, she’s imaginative and confident. But in the personal one, she’s a perennial wallflower. Having realised in her youth that she wasn’t much to look at, she decided to cultivate her mind instead, and after having spent several years caring for her invalid father before his death, she’s reached the age of thirty without having seen much of life and without having any admirers or lovers – she’s never even been kissed. She’s unfashionably plump, short of stature, and possessed of a riotous mass of reddish-brown curls, but although she knows she’s destined to remain a spinster, that doesn’t mean she has to live the rest of her life without experiencing the thrill of passion. So she discreetly approaches the madam of London’s most high-class brothel and asks her to procure her some male company for the evening of her thirtieth birthday a few days hence.
But by the time her birthday comes around, Amanda has changed her mind. As a woman whose livelihood depends to an extent on public opinion, the possibility of discovery and ruin are playing on her mind, so when she opens the door to her ‘present’, she tells him of her change of heart and offers payment – but he very charmingly refuses to accept either, and somehow, she ends up inviting him in for a drink. She tells him she knows she’s not a beauty and that he shouldn’t try to pretend otherwise but can’t help the stirring of pleasure deep inside each time he makes it clear he finds her attractive. Realising suddenly that this is one night on which she might say and do anything she wants because she’ll never see this man again, Amanda decides to allow herself to be seduced.
Jack Devlin, the bastard son of a dissolute nobleman and an Irish housemaid, has worked hard to make something of his life and is looking to expand his successful publishing business. To this end, he makes his way to the home of novelist Amanda Briers with the intention of speaking to her about his plans to publish her work – and instead finds himself mistaken for the prostitute she has hired for the evening. Surprised that a woman as lovely as Amanda would need to do such a thing, slightly amused at the mistake and immediately smitten, Jack decides to play along. It’s clear from the start that he’s attracted to Amanda’s mind as well as her lush body; before he even met her he liked and admired her work and he quickly realises that for all her intelligence and skill as a writer, Amanda lacks self-confidence and deserves to be seen and treated as the desirable woman she is.

Le dí las 5 la primera vez que lo leí. Seguramente ahora le bajaría una estrella ya que al final creo que el tema "hot" se alarga innecesariamente y Lisa Kleypas soluciona temas mediante el sexo que hubiera preferido que fueran conversaciones más desarrolladas.
Pese a esto, destaco los siguientes temas:
Ella destaca por su carácter moderno, su físico tan opuesto a la época pero, ante todo, por su decisión de contratar un gigoló. Creo que tan solo (con ese prólogo) ya merece la pena leerlo
Él es de esos protagonistas que me gustan tanto y con los que, según mi opinión, Lisa Kleypas acierta tanto. Un irlandés desvergonzado, guapo y con un pasado que ha sabido superar. La historia entre ellos me ha gustado, pese a ese primer encuentro memorable es de esas relaciones que evolucionan con la historia.

This was another atypical historical romance featuring a 30 year old heroine, and let me tell you I am all for more of this - it helps me feel not so old myself lol! The heroine in this book is feeling her years too, only she decides to celebrate her birthday by hiring a male prostitute to rid herself of her pesky virginity. That's something I can't say I have ever done, so kudos to her for an original birthday gift to herself, LOL! Jack ends up being quite a bit more then she ordered and I enjoyed their relationship. The ending was very surprising for a story that was pretty lighthearted up until that point. This isn't as fun/light-hearted as Kleypas' later books, but is still a good read.

I would become a pariah, whereas you would receive a mere slap on the wrist.” Amanda’s 30th birthday is nearing and yet she has never been touched by a man. Resigned to her fate of spinsterhood, she wants to at least experience a night of passion. On her birthday, a man appeared at her doorway, and believing that he might be the man she hired – she pulls him inside. Jack Devlin only wanted to call on Amanda to discuss a possible business with her but when she mistakes him for the man she hired for her 30th birthday, Jack decided to play along with it. Although not completely giving Amanda what she desires, he lets her have a taste. And soon, they meet again. Amanda was surprised and embarrassed when she discovers that the very same Jack who gave her pleasure is the notorious businessman and most successful publisher John Devlin whom she despises.
Suddenly You is a historical romance stand-alone written by Lisa Kleypas. I love her. She writes good novels. She has written some of my favorites: Secrets of a Summer night and Devil in Winter, so naturally, I had high expectations for this one.
Meet Amanda Briars: She is a fairly known novelist. She is sensible, independent, and intelligent. A country-bred girl, she moved to London when both of her parents finally passed away. Her work as an author is what gives her the money needed to support her lifestyle. She is happy with her situation: spinsterhood although she does admit that having a companion would be nice enough. But of course, she harbors no illusions that she has any chance to get married for she is 30 years old and that must mean that her child-bearing days are gone.
Meet John Devlin: As a nobleman’s bastard, he a had rough past. With a loan from his father, he started his publishing business. His reputation is not the best, for it is known that he was not fair when it comes to his business dealings. Now, he is London’s most successful businessman, and yet nothing seems to satisfy his soul.
The main characters first meet during Amanda’s 30th birthday when she believed that Jack was the man she hired for that night. Jack went to Amanda’s townhouse intending to make her write for his publishing company and he was surprised to find out that she had been expecting someone else instead. Although confused, he decided to play the part and let Amanda take her pleasure, but of course, he did not let Amanda give her virtue to him. And then, they meet again during Mr. Talbot’s party. But it was obvious that no introduction is needed when they seem to already know each other: at least he knows her. Amanda does not like John Devlin as a businessman and thinks he’s a scoundrel while Jack had taken a liking to her. When they decided to work with each other, their desire for each other is apparent. And what comes with passion and desire is a scandalous affair…a few conflicts here and there and finally a HEA after countless banging.
I loved the heroine. Especially during the beginning of the book. She is someone with who I identified. She was independent and liked her life as it was: for she has no need of a husband and thinks it would be intolerable to have one. She was straightforward and had a no-nonsense attitude. And when she had this internal dialogue, “No one had ever said such things to her before. People were intimidated by her self-possession and no-nonsense demeanor. No man would ever dream of calling her adorable, sweet, darling….” I feel like Lisa Kleypas wrote her character especially for me because Amanda is quite literally me. If I was a character in a book, I would probably be her. Although towards the end, Amanda’s character seemed to take a 360 turn. The sensible Amanda suddenly was gone. And I was so annoyed! Because she was written so well then suddenly…blah.
I loved the hero. It is no surprise, though. I love me some self-made men in historical romance land. He was responsible, caring, and a better man than what people give him credit for. And of course, what’s a hero in an HR without some traumatizing past and the decision to never marry unless circumstances call for it. He was honestly a good hero. What a man! And he certainly was naughty and very H word all the time.
I liked this story, alright. It was entertaining. Amanda and Jack had some nice chemistry. I was honestly expecting a completely different story, I thought it would be the usual “her reputation is at stake I have to marry her” type of marriage but it was the “oh no she has my baby in her belly I have to marry her”. I was surprised but I liked it. This book is just as well-written as other Lisa Kleypas books. But the problem I had was that it had so many sensual scenes. I have no problem with passion when it comes to romance books, for god’s sake it is a romance book, but this one had sex overload. It felt like rather than emotional connection, it focused too much on their physical desire for each other which of course I did not like so much because I prefer emotional connection over bed scene any time. I just have to see that the characters are truly connected with each other for me to believe their love for each other.
And although I loved Amanda, she was so judgemental towards Jack at the beginning. What particularly annoyed me about her is when she decided not to tell Jack about her situation, it was so dumb! And so out of character, she was written as someone who is sensible and frankly, what she did what dumbness overload. I am just glad they got that over with. Jack had faults too, of course, it was obvious that he adored her and yet he was too blind to realize and was almost too late! Also, their first separation was so frustrating. If a happy ending was not required in romance, I would think that they won’t end up with each other because neither of them does anything to fix things and talk to each other and my patience was wearing thin!
The last 3 chapters felt rushed. I think Kleypas could’ve added one or two more chapters so it does not feel like the conflict they had toward the end was just glossed over. What I liked, however, and I admit had me giggling was when Amanda discovered the truth about Jack’s age. I understand her, I too would break down if I married a man younger than me. But Jack’s response was so cute and the whole time I’m just smiling and jealous because I need him in my life. Oh, he was so sweet to her! I must admit, I was shocked too when his real age was revealed. It was such a funny scene but the way he comforts her just made my heart go *sigh*. They annoyed me but I love how they comfort one another and eventually realized that they were perfectly meant for each other.
Overall, it was an enjoyable book and was on the spicier side so if one likes reading that, I think they’ll enjoy this. However, one or two scenes about that are just enough for me so when there was more I was not particularly happy. And as usual, it is a well-written book by Lisa Kleypas which is just what I expected. Amanda and Jack were characters that I genuinely liked although both were annoying at times. My favorite part is Jack’s age reveal. I can’t get over how funny it was. It definitely fits his character to lie about something like that.

Yo soy reacia a los clichés. Sin embargo, Kleypas es capaz de transformar uno en una obra maestra. Sencillamente asombroso el trasfondo de esta historia.

Not my favorite... I hate Jack. HATE him. He was a manipulative little shit. And Amanda was so weak. Jack would kiss her and she would melt at his feet. And Im just here sitting on my couch like "girl get a freaking grip. Have some damn pride."
I feel like I would have really liked the story if I wasn't so mad about how Jack treated Amanda. He kissed and undressed her under false pretenses when they first met. He used that information to blackmail her into working for him. He used her inexperience in sex to make her do what he wanted. He saw it all as a game. If someone ever talked to me the way he talked to Amanda, he would be missing a few teeth. Jack just didn't think about her feelings at all. That is one of the downsides in reading both POVs. I knew he never had any intention of marrying her or loving her. I just could not stand anything about him.
Psh and Amanda wasn't any better. She was an idiot. She let him walk all over her.
Interesting storyline but I hated the characters. So I had a hard time not throwing my kindle.

Eh... I had big hopes and dreams for this one because everyone else seems to love it but it felt really cheesy and forced to me. Virgin... blah blah doesn't know she is pretty... blah blah. It just didn't bring anything to the table for me personally.
I also wasn't in the mood for this type of book when I read it so maybe that was part of the problem. I had really high expectations... unrealistically high I think. I'm going to try another Lisa Kleypas book because everyone raves about her. Maybe a contemporary one would do the trick?

WOW, qué maravillas escribe la Kleypas! A pesar de ser muy diferente a otras de las novelas que he leído de ella, ésta me ha parecido más erótica, más sexual y no me ha decepcionado en absoluto.
