Missing: Prophesized warlock to the King. Has anyone seen him? Please contact your nearest guard station if you do find him.
Aidan never knew he could do magic until a cat dared him to have sex. His life truly must be tragic if even felines knew he was too pathetic to find someone to share his bed with. Unfortunately for him, the cat turned out to be his familiar, leading him not only to his First Time but also to King James, who in turn refuses to let Aidan slip through his fingers again.
For there is a prophecy: James can only truly unite the lands and bring prosperity to all if he has his trusted warlock by his side. Roping Aidan into coming home with him wasn't the happily ever after everyone had expected. Instead, it set in motion a chain of events which would lead both Aidan and James further away from home than they could have ever imagined.
It all started at the tender age of 12 for Anna Marie May when she decided that she didn't like how her then favourite book ended. She re-wrote it for her own pleasure and has been writing ever since. She lives in beautiful Ireland where stormy seas and unpredictable weather help her get into the right mood to create her stories.
If she isn't writing she is travelling, working or studying – and hoping that one day somewhere she will find the perfect cat.
What an excellent beginning to what I'm hoping will be a great fantasy series. Great world building and a well written, captivating story. Aidan grew up fairly sheltered living with his semi-kooky mother who named him after a powerful sorcerer. He was happily working at a small tavern and living with a sorcerer friend when all of a sudden a cat starts talking to him. The cat, Belze, keeps telling Aidan that he needs to get laid which was no news to him. That night after work Aidan does get his itch scratched and also finds out that according to prophecy that he is indeed the long lost sorcerer but is a warlock in this incarnation. The prophecy also states that King James, Aidan's trick, can only bring prosperity and unity to the lands if Aidan is by his side. Totally blown away by all this, Aidan begins his journey to the capital with James and Belze by his side. This story is totally driven by the character's personalities and interactions. Ms May did a wonderful job of creating and fleshing out all of the characters. Belze is funny with her cheeky attitude as Aidan's familiar. The story moved along very smoothly and kept my interest until the very last page. Watching Aidan slowly grow into his powers and love for King James was most of the story. The ending left me waiting hungrily for the next installment of this promising new series. I recommend this fun read to anyone who enjoys a good escape fantasy.
3.75 stars.....Aidan is minding his own business when his life takes a turn towards the strange. He is suddenly able to talk to a cat and is hailed by the reigning high king, James, as "his Aidan".
The story is told from Aidan's POV; his snarky and irrevent inner monologue as well as his dialogue are humorous and modern for the setting - which is developing in to a kind of alternate Camelot universe.
It will be interesting to see how well the 2nd book answers the numerous unanswered questions. Are there going to be as many books as there are - unresolved "tasks"? If so, 4 more books.....imo, this is difficult for an author to do w/o repeating themselves and sacrificing quality. We'll see.
I wasn't able to get a great feel for the MCs as they didn't seem quite fleshed out, esp. James. Maybe improvements made in the next book.
I really, really enjoyed this book. Aidan is funny and sarcastic and all he wanted to do was lose his virginity and mostly the cat was to blame for bringing that up anyway! This is the first step on a journey that is partly preordained and which leads him to learn things he had no idea about himself. I loved the relationship between James and Aidan, paticularly the humour between them. The world-building was excellent and I really have to know what happens next.
4.5. The characters drew me in right away. I really liked the world the author created. The only thing that makes me hesitate is the weird relationship between the king, future queen, and the king's best friend. Guess we'll see how that turns out in the next book.
The writing took some getting used to in the beginning, but I was soon wrapped up in this story and the world. While parts of it are very loosely based on King Arthur, this is very much an original story that sets up an interesting new series. I can't wait to read the other ones!
