Breaking up is hard to do. At least the first few times.

Even though Molly Grant has only a handful of relationships behind her, she’s already been through more divorces than she can count.

At the premier Manhattan law firm where she’s a matrimonial attorney, the hours are long, the bosses tyrannical, and the bonuses stratospheric. Her clients are rich, famous, and used to getting their way. Molly’s job—and primary concern in life—is to work as hard as possible to make sure they do. Until she meets the client who changes everything...

Fern Walker is the desperate former wife of a ruthless media mogul. Her powerful ex is slowly pushing her out of her young children’s lives, and she fears losing them forever. Molly—haunted by an incident from her own past—finds herself unable to walk away from Fern and sets out to help her. She just needs to do it without her bosses finding out.

Now, as complications both professional and personal stack up, Molly can only hope that her own wits, heart, and instincts are enough—both in and out of court.

The Love Wars, by L. Alison Heller: the book you would get if Jane Austen had gone to law school and settled in to write at a Brooklyn Cafe. It's quick, funny, sharp and romantic. Perfectly paced, laugh-out-loud hilarious, with a Mr. Darcy-surprise that will make you do a dance on your couch. I couldn't put it down. Can you tell I loved this book?!

I received a copy of The Love Wars by L. Alison Heller in exchange for an honest review.

What an incredible book! I love a smart chick lit book, and I think that is just what The Love Wars is. Molly Grant is a strong heroine, and her story was a blast to follow. It was interesting how much I learned from the book, mainly about law and the processes that go on during a divorce and the dynamics of a law firm. There’s a bit of romance thrown in between the pages, but that is not the focal part of the story, and I really enjoyed that. I zipped through this book in just over a day, and had to keep tweeting the author to let her know how much I was loving it. Another favorite to add to the list!

Witty and entertaining! The Love Wars is a great "escapist" novel that I became fully immersed in from beginning to end!

Molly Grant is an attorney at a high-powered and prestigious New York law firm, Bacon & Payne. After spending a few years in corporate law, she moves into the firms matrimonial department where she gets a real taste of the inner workings of the divorces of Manhattan's elite. One of her first encounters in with the ex-wife of a high-powered New York businessmen, who wants full custody of her kids in a case that screams parental alienation. When Bacon Payne won't take the case, and Molly can't find an attorney who will, she takes matters into her own hands.

I loved this book! Molly has a lot of pluck, and it made for a great read!

Cleverly written with a smart storyline and a cast of captivating characters, "The Love Wars" is one of those sassy summertime novels that will keep the reader entertained to the very end.

As a former paralegal, I found the legal workings of the story to be fascinating, and it reminded me of why I was really happy to not be working for a divorce attorney back then!

I highly recommend "The Love Wars" for those looking for a fast-moving read.

I won a copy of this book through the Goodreads First Reads program.

I am totally blown away by this book!!!! I LOVED it! I read it VERY VERY fast and I have to say, it really hit home with me. This book touched a VERY personal place in my heart. I myself was taken through an awful custody battle and unlike Fern in the book, I could not find an attorney to take my case without thousands of dollars and I ended up losing my children. They were taken by the state and I now have been diagnosed with PTSD, Major Depressive Disorder, Generalized Anxiety Disorder, on top of being diagnosed with OCD. Losing your kids is such a terrible and emotional thing and I was so touched that inclusive in the story were cute sentimental times with Molly but the base part of the book was Molly standing up for what she believed in to HELP a mother who needed it. I was brought to tears several times remembering my loss and how it affected me and I was so grateful that even in someone's imagination, there are kind civil attorney's who love their work and know they have to be there to stand up for those who do NOT have the money too.

Thanks so much for this tiny bit of inspiration. Even though I already lost my life, maybe someone else can still keep theirs.

The Love Wars was a 5 star read. From start to finish a joy to read and I can't say that about many books right now.

Molly Grant is a matrimonial attorney at a prestigious Manhattan law firm that caters to the rich and famous. One client changes everything for Molly and she begins to re-examine her career and who she represents. I don't want to spoil the book for anyone who is considering reading so I will leave it at that.

Finally, a heroine to root for. Molly is smart, funny and just a good person. I've read some chick-lit lately that main characters just annoy me. Hard to believe premises and heroines that are just impossible to relate to. Not so in The Love Wars which is a breathe of fresh air. It is hard to believe this is Ms. Heller's first book. Well written, witty and fast paced this doesn't read like an author's first attempt.

I would highly recommend this book and look forward to future books by Ms. Heller.

When I sat down to read the Love Wars, I fell in love with Molly Grant right away. I have a soft spot for chick-lit but I usually hate the main characters. They all seem to be ditzy or have a knack for being on one side or the other of cheating, which drives me insane. Molly Grant is smart, relatable, and doesn't find her way into the pants of a married man. Molly's story focuses more on her crazy boss and helping out someone in need.

I found myself taking local trains to/from work because I wanted to spend more time with The Love Wars. With summer right around the corner, I recommend adding Alison Heller's debut to your summer beach read list.

Part of the fun of THE LOVE WARS is that there's more emphasis on Molly Grant's job than I expected. The romance subplot is secondary, maybe even tertiary. It's all about Molly finding out what kind of lawyer she wants to be. I also loved that THE LOVE WARS didn't humiliate her as some chick lit loves to do. She embroils herself in a wacky scheme, but she manages to do so without breaking the law or otherwise setting herself up for a truly horrid fall.

But I have no idea what playing cards have to do with the price of beans in Cairo.

I saw a friend give this novel a good review so I decided to pick it up. I was pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed it!! While its still technically a chick-lit novel it has a bit more substance to sink your teeth into along with a heroine that you don't want to throttle! Win!!

Definitely add this to your list to read this summer, you won't be sorry.

Any book that makes me laugh out loud in public gets 4 stars from me. Ms. Heller does well to engage the reader in the life and work of a lawyer without burdening us with too much lawyer jargon. I loved the eccentrics of the main character Molly. She's lovable and entertaining. There's a hint of romance and quite a few comical moments. Great fictional read with a good grasp of reality interwoven.

This book was about a lawyer realizing that in order to make it to the top she would have to hurt people along the way. However, she is not willing to do this and risks getting in trouble. Along with some romance this made for a book I didn't want to put down!

Think of the movies, The War of the Roses and add in a health dose of The Devil Wears Prada and you have the recipe for the novel, The Love Wars by author L. Alison Heller. We all remember the novels or stories that showcase a hardworking newbie attorney working their way up the difficult corporate law field with the best of intentions at heart. This is exactly the case for Molly Grant who lives in New York City working for one of the most prestigious law firms Bacon Payne. Their client base is some of the wealthiest people in the world and when Molly finds that working on the bottom rung a little too long, she opts to work for the Matrimonial Division.

Here under the leadership of high powered attorney Lillian Starling who handled all the firms high-profile divorce cases. It was here you either were on top of her list of favorites, called her 'girls' or you were on top of her hit list meaning you won't last a day once you make it there. Molly just hopes to last long enough to secure what's known as a Payne-ment, which is a bonus equivalent to a years salary so she can pay off the law school loan her parents have had to take out to send her to school. Just under two years to go and she'll have it in the bag and life will get much easier to bear. For now, however it means jumping when Lillian asks her to jump and to not ask how high but to already know how high and to exceed those expectations, working anything less than 16 hour days is unheard of and if you make one simple mistake you can count your career at Bacon Payne a good-bye.

Molly starts to question working for some of this highly demanding clients who seem to think she is there strictly to appease them at all costs instead of handing their law cases. When she finds herself dealing with the wife of one of their clients, Fern Walker. When Lillian asks her to oversee some of the issues regarding the child custody arrangement between the Walkers, Molly finds herself facing a dilemma that probably tries most legitimate attorneys. Is it possible to still work for Bacon Payne and work a legal case against one of their clients? Everything Molly has ever worked for is on the line, but after an episode in Molly's past, she finds that she might have to bend the rules a lot to make up for a possible second chance to do something noble and worthwhile instead of merely winning another divorce case.

I received The Love Wars by L. Alison Heller compliments of Penguins Publishing and Book Sparks Book Tours for my honest review and received no monetary compensation for a favorable review. This is a great look at what the world of high-profile family law looks like from the outside. It seems that even though the cases are similar, in the world of the rich and wealthy, no demand is too small for some. It shows you what can ultimately happen when good people stand up for those that need it the most. I'd rate this one a 4 out of 5 stars due to my personal rating system. The book does contain some profanity and thus the reason for a lower rating. If you ever wanted to know what working for a law firm that deals with the high profile cases looks like, you might just want to pick this one up. Truly some of the things that the attorneys have to work with are a bit on the outrageous side and really makes you wonder just how true this novel might be to the real world. I know personally I could not work for Bacon Payne. I think sometimes people fail to remember the innocent people that will become collateral damage in the process of some divorce cases.

Molly Grant a different type of heroine. She is a lawyer with a conscious. She is smart, easy to relate to, warm, caring and because of the conscious she just may succeed in the cutthroat business of being a lawyer. Things happen for reasons I like to think and when things happen to Molly it is no different. Not one that is really into Chick-Lit per say I found this to be a very entertaining story. It shows that perhaps there are some lawyers out there that do have a heart just like Molly.

Molly may soon find herself out of a job. Trying to make her life have more meaning she takes a new job in the law firm she works for. There was an incident in law school; her parents struggled to help her pay for law school and Molly find that her loans have become quite overwhelming. Life just has a way of sucking every so often. She finds that no matter how much you work to get ahead it seems as if you get further behind. So therefore a new job may be what she needs. With a new job comes a new boss, Lillian…a real barracuda. I found her to be way too intense. She needed to lighten up a little. But, I guess she didn’t get where she is at being too soft. Lillian tends to be rather moody, changes her mind allot which equates into longer hours and much more work. Molly thinks she needs to just stick it out for five years grab her bonus and all her money troubles will be righted. As there new person in the Marriage department Molly finds she doesn’t fell she will make it to that five year mark. When Lillian dumps Fern in Molly’s lap, Molly rethinks her whole purpose of being a lawyer. Thus she becomes the lawyer with a conscious.

I really enjoyed this story. A great book to add to your list of summer reads for the beach or if you don’t have plans something to curl up with and enjoy. The characters all with unique personalities were a little on the quirky side. But they were there to help Molly and proved to be really good friends at work and outside of work. How many can say that about their co-workers. Ms. Heller shows that there is always hope for the underdog that you just have to find the right person to help. She gives Molly that never gives up attitude. It was fun to see how things unfolded as Molly took on a client she was to have gotten rid of. Ms. Heller took her insight about lawyers and gave us a more realistic side with a touch of humor thrown in. She took the ordinary and expanded on it to create just the right balance of humor making us think that just maybe lawyers are real people after all.

A really light story with a humorous look into what happens when you try to take on to much while struggling with your regular work load and the one that your heart tells you not to give up on. You can’t help but fall for Molly, her co-workers and yes even Lillian. A delightfully entertaining story with substance.

Molly Grant is employed as a corporate lawyer for the prestigious law firm of Bacon Payne; she’s okay with the 16 hour days because that’s the cost of earning one’s way into partner status. One day she hears a conversation in the elevator and soon thereafter applies to work in the Divorce Department. No, this isn’t a bleak, suffering, painful novel; Molly describes her work in a light manner that is both amusing at the foolish demands and counter-demands of couples ending a marriage; satire at the laws that dictate who gets what material goods; and poignant moments when one is on the brink of losing a child and Molly is bold enough to put on her fighting style for the sake of what is truly right and wrong and not just “billable.”
Upon entry into the marital real of legal affairs at Bacon Payne, Molly meets Lillian Starling, a high power, driven attorney who either totally loves her “girls” or fires them with the most absolutely withering phrases and insults, with no in-between moments. When Molly meets Fern Walker and hears her story, she is reminded of another request for help from a threatened mother years ago and how cavalierly she was turned away since protecting an abused spouse was not the area of the facility where Molly was then interning. Deciding to represent Fern Walker is risky because Fern’s husband is a very high profile customer of Bacon Payne. Fern knows there’s a conflict of interest and yet believes she can manage it by starting her own firm. There’s another bonus in that Molly would get the chance to represent needy clients and not the rich snobs who constantly range from cajoling, insulting and bossy ordering snobs.
How Molly can manage to do her normal work, pay off her college loans her parents assumed for her dream career, and juggle friends and dates is funny, cool, and interesting. For there are elements of the law that aren’t dry and boring but instead specifically designed to be neutral in order to protect a wife or husband from losing a child, an event that could quite literally destroy that person forever.
Molly also forms new relationships with colleagues that are honest, straight-forward, challenging, and more reflective of the family-like atmosphere of many law firms that succeed because of successful lawyers and a collegial team spirit and an additional touch of spicy appeal.
The Love Wars is a fascinating look at divorce law and the lawyers and clients who pass through its gates briefly but with all the drama of a high speed roller coaster. L. Alison Heller presents the topic and gutsy, intelligent characters with panache and an obviously personal knowledge of the subject. This may be her first novel but it is definitely a successful endeavor and will leave readers eagerly anticipating more and better of this author with a definite, unique style! Well done, indeed, L. Alison Heller!

Molly Grant is an attorney at one of the largest and most popular Law Firms for the Rich and famous in New York City, sometimes even just the rich! She begins in the Corporate Division but finds that it is too lack luster for her taste, so she takes swift action to join the Matrimonial Division. The believes that handling divorces and all that comes along with it; from child support, alimony, custody and dividing assets was more her style.

The entire novel takes place within the confines of the Bacon Payne’s Law Firm building, various court rooms with occasional moves to other locations. These other locations include her home, occasional restaurants, bars and even manicure salons. I believe that they are in the book so minutely to show just how much Molly’s life revolves around her work at Bacon Payne. Molly works late in to the evenings and often found at the office on weekends.

It is hard to believe she has time for any stimulation outside of Bacon Payne. But, those travels are always full of banter and wit that leave you laughing out loud.

Her parents are beyond proud of her accomplishments. Molly hopes to give back to her them for all that they did to help for her to attend college and law school.

Her immediate plan is to make it to her 5-year anniversary with the Law Firm, because it comes with an enormous bonus. This bonus would help her finish off her educational loans and firm up a less stressful life for her parents and herself.

In strolls Fern Walker to try to get help with visitation rights to her own children, which she is being alienated from. She has not seen them since divorcing her husband. Molly’s boss Lillian refuses to take on this job, but Molly was not so eager to let Fern walk away without the proper help and guidance she needs; even if that means taking on the case pro bono herself.

Molly’s work life begins to spiral out of control at work, due to Fern’s case. Seeing all that Molly went through to help Fern Walker, your belief in the humanity of Lawyers, if you ever doubted they had a heart; is shining through!

If she is caught working the Fern Walker case, her five year bonus is in jeopardy; and she may even lose her job. But, to Molly this is a case that needs to be won; mostly, due to something she neglected to do in her past. This is more personal to her than she realizes.

Molly has such a great heart, that you cannot help but root for her and the people helping her, especially Henry. He is one of the Lawyers at Bacon Payne that knows what she is up to with the Walker vs. Walker case

And, there is a love story for Molly too, that may not end up in Divorce Court! Enjoy!

Molly Grant works as a matrimonial attorney in a firm known for being tough on their new lawyers--so tough that they earn a large bonus if they survive five years on the job, money Molly desperately needs to pay of her school debts and repay her parents who've struggled to help her financially. But Molly doesn't really fit in with the demanding clients, detached lawyers, and her extremely scary boss. One wrong move, and her boss will turn on her, and Molly will lose everything she's worked so hard for.

The problem is Fern Walker, ex-wife of a powerful man who is intentionally depriving her of their children, and poisoning them against their mother. Without help, Fern will lose them for good, but Molly is told not to get involved.

But she can't turn away from this helpless woman, and decides to take a big risk--to be Fern's lawyer, and hide it from her boss. Failure will have permanent consequences for both their futures, so Molly has to win--and keep under the radar.

Molly isn't the stereotypical shark of a lawyer verbally attacking witnesses and hunting for money. She's trying to keep her head down, to take care of her parents, and yet she worries about people it isn't her job to be concerned about. Trapped between what she's told to do and what's the right thing to do, she makes the choice that leaves the reader rooting for her. No matter how impossible her chances of success seem, she keeps going. An often-funny read, despite the frightening bosses and self-centered clients.

I received a copy of The Love Wars by L. Alison Heller in exchange for an honest review.

I absolutely loved this book, it kept me turning the pages until the very end.

Molly is an attorney at a top notch law firm in Manhattan with some really egotistical bosses and lots of long hours and the pay to go with it. Then – in walks the ex wife (Fern) of a really mean media mogul and Fern really needs someone to represent her because she is being alienated from her children by her ex-husband.

It was a very realistic representation of a child custody case, and I loved how Molly rose to the task. She wanted her “career” plans to work, but at what cost, with everything getting much more complicated than she anticipated. The other characters were spot on and there were some great surprises and I really loved the way the story played out.

I would absolutely recommend!

great read! I know nothing about divorce law and was fascinated by the characters and crazy culture surrounding such a vulnerable time for people. I love that the author, L. Alison Heller is actually a divorce lawyer and used her past experiences to composite some memorable characters for both the divorcees and firm coworkers.

Her main character, Molly, was such a down to earth, likable character. It felt like I could have been in her shoes if I found myself in that world of the matrimonial group. A clever, strong and yet self-conscious character whom I wanted to see make if out of the story on top.

The story was both funny and full of surprises. And despite the backdrop of divorce, I was rooting for love to prevail. Don't be surprised if this one doesn't last long in your Summer book bag, you won't want to put it down.

I received a free copy of this novel in exchange for my honest review. Molly Grant works at a posh law firm with the Matrimonial Group. Their clients are rich, famous people that must have their way. Her co-workers, Liz, Rachel, Hope, Henry, and Everett do all they can to appease their boss Lillian.

This was a great chick-lit novel! I loved the fact that she went rogue to help her client Fern. Her coworkers are like her best friends. This is a great summer read, full of laughter and Molly is one character everyone will fall in love with. There's even some possible romance in the mix. All in all, a must read!

Whenever I am reading a book that I stay up a little too late to finish the next chapter and I'm both pleased and satisfied with the ending, that's a book it's going to get 4-5 stars regardless of a few flaws. The Love Wars fits this criteria.

I was looking for a light and entertaining read, and came across this book. I enjoyed the concept and I appreciated that Molly, the main character, played out nicely as a compliment and intelligent young lady. I constantly expected her to have some sort of "being clumsy or irresponsible" or some such thing that we often see in these types of characters. I was pleased that did not happen. Fun story great easy read.

I won this book from Goodreads First Reads and I absolutely adored it.
It was impossible to not like Molly. I don't read a lot of 'chick-lit' because the characters tend to all be the same and have the same annoying traits that make me question whether or not I've read this book before. Molly, on the other hand, is smart and self-aware. She isn't perfect, she is realistic.
I definitely recommend this to any former chick-lit lovers out there who have become bored of the genre. The Love Wars just might be for you.

This story was amazing. I thoroughly enjoyed the strong female characters. I liked that the focus was on Molly and her job. Her personal life was a secondary part of the story. It was great to see her be so independent. I don't think Heller intended to write Molly as an example for young women, but I think she would be a good one!

I read this book at a time when my life was extremely busy and yet it kept my attention. The book kept calling me back to it! It was a nice "get away".

Wonderful book! Read it in 8 hours, I couldn't put it down. Molly is a very likeable, relatable character. There was lots of humor in the situations Molly finds herself in, yet the topic of divorce and custody are treated with the seriousness they deserve. Can't wait to read Heller's next book!
