Bone Lace takes place two years before The Fifth Petal, during the time that Rafferty and Towner were separated (that's a whole story in itself). It features Towner, Ann, Zee, and the girl who was born at the end of The Lace Reader, Towner's half-sister. Wish I could have included Callie, but she hadn't yet come to town. (less)

“There is lace in every living thing: the bare branches of winter, the patterns of clouds, the surface of water as it ripples in the breeze.... Even a wild dog's matted fur shows a lacy pattern if you look at it closely enough.”
Brunonia Barry, The Lace Reader

I'll pit my God against your god any day, I say to the Calvinists. It's not their god I'm praying to.... The God I'm praying to is neither male nor female. My God is the one who exists apart from all of men's agendas, the God who takes you away when there is no possible place you can go.”
Brunonia Barry, The Lace Reader

“I realize the selfishness of children. We love them, and we revolve around their universe, but they don't revolve around ours.”
Brunonia Barry, The Lace Reader

Marialyce, My apologies, I somehow missed this for many months. Thank you so much for the kind words. I am working on my third book, and your comment is great motivation especially after a tough writing week. I was named by my maternal grandfather after his alma mater, which was Brown University. Evidently, Brunonia is Brown in latin. He was the family called a "rabid alumnus." It is my middle name which I'm using as a pen name in his honor as he was also my mentor.

Marialyce I finished The Lace Reader last night. I must say that you have to continue writing. I loved it! So intricate and the characters were wonderfully eccentric and so likable except for Cal (grrrr!!!)

PS I also recommended The Map of True Places to my library book club. They eagerly copied down the title and your name.

Curious about your first name. Is it a family name?

Wow, what a wonderful compliment! Thank you so much. That made my day.

Marialyce I recently finished your Map of True Places and I loved it. It was such a wonderful novel and I loved all the characters you wrote of. I am looking forward to reading The Lace Reader which I now have. Thank you for writing a beautiful, intelligent book for those who are dealing with elderly parents while dealing with everyday life issues. Hope there are lots more of your books in the future.
