I think delusion is an absolutely necessary ingredient to get anything creative or out of the ordinary done ever. Without a healthy dose of delusion I don't think a single novel would have been written, a sculpture created, an Olympics swimming race won or even a new cafe opened. Writers, by nature, are going to be slightly more delusional than others because we're dreamers, we imagine the unlikely, that's how we create fiction.
I remember two years back speaking to a relative of mine about a book I was writing and vividly recall this look of pity on her face, like she thought 'poor dear'. I got a strong sense that she thought I was delusional and plain silly for thinking I could be a writer. For a long time, I questioned it to. But the best tool for me has been putting my work out there - Wattpad has been the most amazing platform to discover there is an audience for my work.
Rather than hoping my delusion becomes a reality, I'd prefer to keep on being deluded, to dream bigger and to imagine greater. My greater worry would be becoming less delusional ...(less)

Often I write from 5am-7am before the kids wake and then whatever periods I can steal throughout the day or in the evening. I find that I can't sustain this all the time though ... I might work like this for 4 months and then take some time out!!(less)

“Crowdfunding is the new black.”

Topics Mentioning This Author

“The thing is, work has simply swamped my whole existence. Slowly but surely it's robbed me of my mother, my wife, and everything that meant anything to me. It's like a germ planted in the skull that devours the brain, spreads to the trunk and the limbs, and destroys the entire body in time. No sooner am I out of bed in the morning than work clamps down on me and pins me to my desk before I've even had a breath of fresh air. It follows me to lunch and I find myself chewing over sentences as I'm chewing my food. It goes with me when I go out, eats out of my plate at dinner and shares my pillow in bed at night. It's so extremely merciless that once the process of creation is started, it's impossible for me to stop it, and it goes on growing and working even when I'm asleep. ... Outside that, nothing, nobody exists.”
Émile Zola, The Masterpiece

“Under the horizon, under the bowl of the earth, giant wheels have started turning, monstrous conveyer belts are winding, toothed gears are pulling the sun down and the moon up. The day is tired, it has folded its white wings, flies west-ward, big, in loose clothes, it waves a sleeve, releases stars, blesses the people walking on the chilling earth: good-bye, good-bye, I'll come again tomorrow.”
Tatyana Tolstoya

“I turn sentences around. That’s my life. I write a sentence and then I turn it around. Then I look at it and I turn it around again. Then I have lunch. Then I come back in and write another sentence. Then I have tea and turn the new sentence around. Then I read the two sentences over and turn them both around. Then I lie down on my sofa and think. Then I get up and throw them out and start from the beginning. And if I knock off from this routine for as long as a day, I’m frantic with boredom and a sense of waste. Sundays I have breakfast late and read the papers with Hope. Then we go for a walk in the hills, and I'm haunted by the loss of all that good time. I wake up Sunday mornings and I'm nearly crazy at the prospect of all those unusable hours. I'm restless, I'm bad-tempered, but she's a human being too, you see, so I go. To avoid trouble she makes me leave my watch at home. The result is that I look at my wrist instead. We're walking, she's talking, then I look at my wrist - and that generally does it, if my foul mood hasn't already. She throws in the sponge and we come home. And at home what is there to distinguish Sunday from Thursday? I sit back down at my little Olivetti and start looking at sentences and turning them around. And I ask myself, Why is there no way but this for me to fill my hours?”
Philip Roth

“All great literature is one of two stories; a man goes on a journey or a stranger comes to town.”
Leo Tolstoy

“Whoever wants music instead of noise, joy instead of pleasure, soul instead of gold, creative work instead of business, passion instead of foolery, finds no home in this trivial world of ours.”
Hermann Hesse
