Lorena Cassady was born in Greenwich, Connecticut and now lives in Oaxaca, Mexico.

A former Zen Buddhist nun whose new book EVERY BUDDHA, SAME PRICE records her misadventures at Kim Son Monastery and Plum Village, France, 25 years ago. A spiritual travel book that well documents the ironies, pitfalls, joys and slapstick stumbles of life in the monastery.

I moved to Mexico at the end of a process of becoming bilingual and realizing that I loved the place after many visits to Chiapas and Oaxaca. It is the most evocative and fascinating place I've ever been. I am surrounded by Zapotec and Mixtec ruins, 17th century churches, beautiful art and architecture, and many vibrant indigenous cultures. I also found that I need some distance from my own culture to stay sane.(less)

Memoirists told me I had to tell the truth and nothing but the truth (which is an unexamined proposition, since no one is endowed with perfect, factual memory) and fiction did not define what I was doing since something over 50% of the book was memoir and a record of historical events. I call "Her Perilous Journey" a picaresque memoir because that's what it is, and for me it honestly represents what the reader should expect. Hope I answered your question.(less)

“I met Rob in Austin, Texas. He was hitchhiking to California and I was driving to California, so it seemed like a perfect match. He had long blond hair and blue eyes and golden skin and so did I. It was like falling in love with myself.”
Lorena Cassady

“I saw the priest take note of the time. What time was it? Then I felt his finger on my forehead. And I realized, whatever time it was, that it was the last moment of my life as an Episcopalian.”
Lorena Cassady, Her Perilous Journey

“When you got back to his apartment, the flamenco dancers were still stomping around in the restaurant upstairs. Moriarity pushed a bottle of cheap Sauterne and sliced salami across the kitchen table. A large cockroach fell from the top of the refrigerator and landed with a click on the scarred linoleum floor. You lifted both your feet and curled your toes.”

“The history of the United States is a history of settler colonialism—the founding of a state based on the ideology of white supremacy, the widespread practice of African slavery, and a policy of genocide and land theft.”
Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, An Indigenous Peoples' History of the United States

“Columbus Day is still a federal holiday despite Columbus never having set foot on any territory ever claimed by the United States.”

Freya Barrington Hi Lorena,

My latest book, Gozo Is the Grass Greener has just been released.

Check it out here on Goodreads;

https://www.goodreads.com/author/show...

Or visit my blogsite;

www.gozoisthegrassgreener.blogspot.com

Gozo is one of the Maltese islands and currently very popular and topical due to Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt making a movie there!

Many thanks Lorena -

All the best

Freya

Melinda Thank you Lorena for your friendship. I look forward to reading your reviews. Pleasure to meet you, I look forward to discussing books and much more! Happy reading Lorena! ~Melinda

Jacob Thanks for adding me, Lorena. I like your goal, although I have to admit I set aside Don Quixote earlier this year to focus on some other books and, um, haven't returned to it yet. Don't worry, I haven't given up or anything! But your picaresque project might be the thing that helps motivate me to get back to it :)

s.penkevich Thank you for the friend request and the kind words! Looking forward to discussing with you.

ReemK10 (Paper Pills) Thank you for the friend request. :)
