The World War II fiction bug bit Gail after she penned a memoir. Since then, she's written eight novels, with two more waiting in the wings. You can count on her make-do Greatest Generation characters to exhibit tenacity and spunk (or 'pluck' if they're British) in the face of grave danger and distress.

The best compliment her stories have ever received is that her heroines and heroes receive no easy ways out of pat answers. But just as in real life, doubts and challenges produce real strength and hone honest faith.

Recently, she added several nonfiction titles to her list. She instructed college expository writing, edits, and facilitates writing workshops. She and her husband split their time between Iowa and Arizona Rim Country.

I've never written a mystery before, so this is an opportunity to use ingenuity in a new way. Also working on the sequel to With Each New Dawn, deep in the heart of Southern France, 1944.(less)

I went to Algona, about 2 hours from where we live, and spoke with locals who still have childhood memories of the POW camp. The veterans in town have created a museum with plenty of opportunities for
research, so I spent an afternoon there poring over newspaper articles, which led me to the local library. There, I found a book about the camp with special emphasis on following the Geneva Convention. and THEN about a year later, I discovered a book about many POW camps, written by an Iowa author, and learned even more about the overall process. I enjoyed the search for answers. Thanks for asking. (less)

Desiderata by Max Ehrmann
“You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,

Collected Poems and Translations by Ralph Waldo Emerson
“Write it on your heart
that every day is the best day in the year.
He is rich who owns the day, and no one owns the day
who allows it to be invaded with fret and anxiety.

Finish every day and be done with it.
You have done what you could.
Some blunders and absurdities, no doubt crept in.
Forget them as soon as you can, tomorrow is a new day;
begin it well and serenely, with too high a spirit
to be cumbered with your old nonsense.

This new day is too dear,
with its hopes and invitations,
to waste a moment on the yesterdays.”
