Get as much experience as you can developing stories and characters. Try to figure out whether you're primarily a short story author or a novelist, and concentrate on one or the other (although, some people do both well!).

Don't become discouraged! The moment you receive a rejection, attach that story to another email or submission form and send it right back out!(less)

I'm working on a novel featuring my series character Mike Christopher, but I believe I'm going to concentrate on short stories after that.

Part of it is that I've always had a tough time writing novels; I've found it's difficult for me to conceive of longer plotlines.

There's also a practical side to that decision. I've pretty consistently sold my short stories to science fiction magazines. Once I have enough to create a collection, I can self-publish that collection if I can't find a "regular" publisher to put it out. And unlike an unpublished novel, those stories will already have gone through the editorial process during their respective magazine appearances. So I won't need to go to the expense of hiring an editor before putting the book out.(less)

Namwali Serpell’s THE OLD DRIFT is truly epic

Namwali Serpell’s THE OLD DRIFT has been described as "sprawling" and "epic," and it is, indeed that. The story spans over a hundred years, from 1904 to 2019. It chronicles the interactions of three families, black, brown, and white, within the landlocked nation of Zambia.

Serpell makes use of many literary tools at her disposal; she melds together elements of family relationships, psychological d Read more of this blog post »
