What’s your advice for aspiring writers?

Both organizations offer amazing co…moreI highly recommend you learn the craft of writing. Join Romance Writers of America and Mystery Writers of America. Both organizations offer amazing conferences and on-line courses.

The three main areas I suggest you explore first are:
1) Characters: Know them. What do they want, why do they want it, and why they can't get it. This is known as Goal, Motivation, Conflict. Deb Dixon has a great book on this titled: GMC (Buy it off her website. The book is cheaper at that site)

2) Plotting: Purchase Syd Field's book on 3 Act Structure and Blake Snyder's Save The Cat. They'll teach you techniques in outlining your story.

3) Structure. Those two books mentioned above will also help you with the structure of your story. In addition, you'll you need to know how to structure an actual scene in a book. Buy Jack Bickham's book Scene & Sequel.

From there then you can breakdown even more and lean about POV, dialogue, emotion, grammar and punctuation, sentence structure, etc.
If you learn the craft in advance, it'll save you hours, days, months, years in rewrites and editing.
