I'm mad about the middle ages and love writing this series of medieval whodunits featuring nun sleuth Hildegard of Meaux. When I started with Hangman Blind I thought Hildegard would become an abbess but then she joined the Cistercians who only allowed women to be prioresses so she's had to put up with that. It surprises me that I'm writing historical novels at all, especially ones involving crime, as before this I wrote contemporary plays and romance. I'm doubtful about putting too much violence in the stories as there is already so much in the world and I don't like the idea of adding to it, even if only in the imagination, but then, it's part of that world too so it cannot be avoided. I would love to write a book shadowing every year of R ...more

It was the Merciless Parliament of 1388 that made me want people to know something about it and about the courage of real people who had to face such injustice at that time. How would we have acted if we'd been living then? I like to think we'd have done the right thing, but who knows?(less)

For me it's more a question of how to get all the necessary chores done to make space to write. Working at home means that I'm on call most of the time and it's very hard to say no. Writers have too many related tasks to do these days, writing a blog, going on twitter, having a look at Good Reads and so on. It eats into the time and takes energy out of the creative process. My best solution is to set aside specific time for these things and then find a good cafe where they're friendly to writers. What do other writers do, I wonder?(less)

What would you be eating in 1388?

Medieval food can be really surprising. It wasn't all thin gruel, pottage and a handful of beans. If the cookery books are to be believed at least some people, the townsfolk, the manorial lords for instance, ate well and loved special recipes which were gathered for the first time by Richard II's master chef at Eltham Palace. There were dozens of different meats, not only venison, but hare, peacoc Read more of this blog post »

“doubt whether any of us can say too much.  Saying too little is worse.  Hiding resentment and confusion in our hearts seems to me to be a sin against ourselves as well as against truth.”
