That book is "Winter's Edge," a mystery that I just finished, and the idea for it came out of a real photograph of a little girl sitting on a bed dressed in a winter coat. Her mother had left her in an asylum/hospital care ward, and taken off for parts unknown. The girl grew up in that place. I saw this photo many years ago. Then one day about five months ago, it just came up as something vital, that I had to translate, and explore.

Ideas come and I write them down, fragments that they are, and they become images and people in a story--they evolve that way, out of the fragment of the idea. I think most writers do this--inspiration comes sometimes from the most minor detail, and then suddenly that connects to a much larger concept, and territory. Even when one draws upon life experiences, they get transformed this way.

A collection of short stories, most of them in the fantasy realm--some high epic and others more alternate reality. I am exploring, collectively, the concept of redemption.

Write everyday and at the same time of day if you can.You have heard it often, and it is true, for it is a kind of mind memory--you are psyched at a subconscious level to be ready when you start. It is like playing a musical instrument--you can't do it all at once, but instead, each day brings facility. It doesn't matter so much how long you spend at it in one sitting. After a while, you'll want to expand the time, anyway.

Just doing it, having the freedom to live for a while in my imagination. It's a high all its own.

I don't experience it, actually. That is, if I am stalled because of a plot idea or a character's role, I begin writing a short story. It works every time. The book always pulls me back in... :-)
