Category:Non-fiction books about the African-American civil rights movement

[edit]
The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
The result of the discussion was: rename to Category:Non-fiction books about the civil rights movement per WP:C2C. Dissatisfaction over ambiguity should be addressed with a discussion to rename the parent category. (non-admin closure) Compassionate727 (T·C) 18:37, 10 September 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Nominator's rationale: To align this new category with the name of the topic, Civil rights movement, per WP:CATNAME. Randy Kryn (talk) 12:29, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Yes, the name of the main article should certainly be either Civil Rights Movement or 1954-1968 Civil Rights Movement. The CRM was a unified series of events initiated, directed, and organized by the same handful of people with a successfully achieved planned and announced goal: to nonviolently end legal segregation in the United States. As for this category, as long as the name on Wikipedia is lowercased then the categories referring to it should, unfortunately, do the same. Randy Kryn (talk) 00:41, 21 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Oppose, rather keep "African-American" in the category name, just civil rights movement is very generic. Category names should sometimes be less ambiguous than article names, and this is such an occasion. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:13, 21 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    • Hello Marcocapelle. Not even close to a generic name. The Civil Rights Movement seems as central to American and world history as World War I, World War II, the American Civil War, the American Revolution, on and on. It has a beginning, an ending, and goals, strategies and tactics initiated, run, directed, and organized by the same small number of people over a 14-year period (including a very intense seven years, 1960-1966). Since WP:CATNAME "dictates" what the name should be though, the requested move follows category guidelines. If I were going to also ignore CATNAME I'd go, of course, with the uppercase 'Nonfiction books about the Civil Rights Movement', which Marcocapelle endorsed above. Randy Kryn (talk) 23:06, 21 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
      • Outside of the United States it is a more generic concept which makes a disambiguator fairly common, e.g. [1]. Although in this example it is "American" rather than "African-American". Note that I fully understand that the article here on en.wp does not have a disambiguator, simply because a large amount of readers live in the United States. Marcocapelle (talk) 04:07, 22 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Comment – For what it's worth, as a native English speaker from outside of the American bubble, I would generally hear it referred to as "the American civil rights movement". I don't think "African-" is a necessary disambiguator. We do sometimes disambiguate categories even when the article is (supposedly) the primary topic. There are other civil rights movements. Based on the names of the other civil rights movement articles, the main category for this one should be Category:Civil rights movement (1954–1968) and subcategories would follow that disambiguation. Mclay1 (talk) 14:27, 27 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    Mclay1, agreed that the name should include the years, and the main article used to be capitalized as a proper name. There are many 'civil rights movements' but only one 'Civil Rights Movement', proper name, which occurred in America between 1954 and 1968 and was organized and otherwise run throughout by the same relatively few people. Randy Kryn (talk) 15:02, 27 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
    The idea that there's only one "Civil Rights Movement" is an American bias (even if it comes from someone from outside of America due to cultural imperialism). People from Northern Ireland, for example, would refer to the civil rights movement in their country as "the civil rights movement". They're not going to draw a distinction between theirs and another country's based on capital letters. Mclay1 (talk) 15:57, 27 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
  • Rename per parent category Category:Works about the civil rights movement. If you don't like the name of the parent category, the solution is to propose renaming the entire category tree, not by creating confusion one by one (and I would likely support such a rename of the entire tree). Having one (and only one) category with extra disambiguation where there is consensus to avoid that disambiguation is a WP:LOCALCONSENSUS issue, and I would urge us to avoid that. Part of consensus is doing your best to uphold it even when you disagree with it, and I commend Randy Kryn for doing so.

    I would add that having this one category with a more clear name actually makes the names of other categories less clear: I could certainly see myself placing a work about an unrelated civil rights movement in Category:Works about the civil rights movement thinking if it was about the American civil rights movement it would say so like its subcategory Category:Non-fiction books about the African-American civil rights movement. Best, HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 22:52, 28 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Let's just expand this discussion to be about the whole tree then and tag those other categories. Mclay1 (talk) 01:54, 31 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Nominator's rationale: Unjustified redirect made in 2008. Unsystematic compared to other European countries Estopedist1 (talk) 05:13, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
 Comment:: once you are redirecting, please suppress the string "Template:Latvia-edu-stub" to keep Wikipedia database cleaner Estopedist1 (talk) 05:14, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Estopedist1: Are you suggesting redirect suppression? There's no need to do that just for the sake of the database; redirects are cheap. jlwoodwa (talk) 05:52, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@Jlwoodwa: yes: redirect suppression Estopedist1 (talk) 05:54, 20 August 2024 (UTC)[reply]
