- The result of the discussion was: merge to Category:Jurassic Park novels. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 05:48, 30 August 2024 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: The category solely consists of redirects. (Oinkers42) (talk) 21:43, 20 August 2024 (UTC)
- Support in principle, per nom, but the category may be merged to Category:Jurassic Park novels. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:02, 21 August 2024 (UTC)
- @(Oinkers42): are you okay with merging? HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 20:55, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
- I mean, what is there to merge? (Oinkers42) (talk) 13:38, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Marcocapelle: your response? HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 15:41, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- The three redirects may still be moved to Category:Jurassic Park novels. I can't see a reason why not. Marcocapelle (talk) 17:04, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- @(Oinkers42): and your response? HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 18:30, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- I mean, I guess, but I fail to see the use for navigation. (Oinkers42) (talk) 04:38, 30 August 2024 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: merge to Category:Spouses of Massachusetts politicians. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 22:22, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: Only one article in the category. Being married to a mayor usually isn't enough for someone to be notable. JDDJS (talk to me • see what I've done) 18:16, 20 August 2024 (UTC)
- Delete per nom. Marcocapelle (talk) 20:16, 20 August 2024 (UTC)

- @JDDJS and Marcocapelle: are you alright with merging? HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 20:16, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, while the existence of Category:Spouses of Massachusetts politicians may be questionable it is certainly a proper merge target. Marcocapelle (talk) 21:00, 28 August 2024 (UTC)

- I haven't looked into this one, but like the other proposal, it could theoretically expand as time goes on, although I find it less likely. I would say it's probably ok to merge into Category:Spouses of Indiana politicians. Relinus (talk) 20:52, 21 August 2024 (UTC)
- There is Category:Spouses of United States mayors which needs to be addressed. I favor deletion as a non-defining category. Spouses of mayors of even the largest cities are not notable for that role.--User:Namiba 20:02, 23 August 2024 (UTC)

- The result of the discussion was: rename to Category:Leaders of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and purge. HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 22:23, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: Delete per WP:NONDEF. Seems to be a NYC-based fraternal order but not a well-known or even notable one. Omnis Scientia (talk) 12:42, 20 August 2024 (UTC)
- Rename Leaders of the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks and purge non-leaders. It is really strange to hear that the Benevolent and Protective Order of Elks is non-notable given that it is one of the largest fraternal organizations in the United States and multiple presidents have been members. You should actually read the article before nominating.--User:Namiba 15:51, 20 August 2024 (UTC)
- @Namiba, in my defense, I'm not from any country which has these orders. I know there are a lot of them in the U.S. but I don't know how they work or which is more important than which. Reading the article - which I did do before nominating it - didn't help much. And I would have nominated it even then because not a lot of societies have members categories.
- I will agree with your rename and purge however and will be researching more into these societies and orders. Omnis Scientia (talk) 18:17, 20 August 2024 (UTC)
- Rename and purge per Namiba, mere membership of an organization is hardly ever a defining characteristic. Marcocapelle (talk) 16:55, 20 August 2024 (UTC)

Category:Non-fiction books about the African-American civil rights movement
[edit]- The following is an archived discussion concerning one or more categories. Please do not modify it. Subsequent comments should be made on an appropriate discussion page (such as the category's talk page or in a deletion review). No further edits should be made to this section.
- The result of the discussion was: rename to Category:Non-fiction books about the civil rights movement per WP:C2C. Dissatisfaction over ambiguity should be addressed with a discussion to rename the parent category. (non-admin closure) —Compassionate727 (T·C) 18:37, 10 September 2024 (UTC)
- Nominator's rationale: To align this new category with the name of the topic, Civil rights movement, per WP:CATNAME. Randy Kryn (talk) 12:29, 20 August 2024 (UTC)
Rename, also per WP:C2C, this could perhaps have been speedied.Marcocapelle (talk) 17:01, 20 August 2024 (UTC)- Adding WP:C2C to nomination rational (per Category:Civil rights movement and struck comment). Randy Kryn (talk) 03:53, 22 August 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose rename =w After giving it a good deal of thought, I chose this name for the Category very deliberately, in order to specify the subject area with total clarity. I am fully aare of the many lengthy previous CFD discussions about this, and I adamantly reject the last one which resulted in the current utterly unsatisfactory name. Ordinarily when I create subcats, I apply whatever name is being used for the head category. So I guess you could consider it an act of civil disobedience. We should not be using a formulation which is so pathetically ambiguous and unhelpful. It should either be Category:Civil Rights Movement or Category:African-American civil rights movement (or a variant thereof). I am fine with either. That is really all I have to say on the subject. Best regards, Anomalous+0 (talk) 00:28, 21 August 2024 (UTC)
- Yes, the name of the main article should certainly be either Civil Rights Movement or 1954-1968 Civil Rights Movement. The CRM was a unified series of events initiated, directed, and organized by the same handful of people with a successfully achieved planned and announced goal: to nonviolently end legal segregation in the United States. As for this category, as long as the name on Wikipedia is lowercased then the categories referring to it should, unfortunately, do the same. Randy Kryn (talk) 00:41, 21 August 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose, rather keep "African-American" in the category name, just civil rights movement is very generic. Category names should sometimes be less ambiguous than article names, and this is such an occasion. Marcocapelle (talk) 06:13, 21 August 2024 (UTC)
- Hello Marcocapelle. Not even close to a generic name. The Civil Rights Movement seems as central to American and world history as World War I, World War II, the American Civil War, the American Revolution, on and on. It has a beginning, an ending, and goals, strategies and tactics initiated, run, directed, and organized by the same small number of people over a 14-year period (including a very intense seven years, 1960-1966). Since WP:CATNAME "dictates" what the name should be though, the requested move follows category guidelines. If I were going to also ignore CATNAME I'd go, of course, with the uppercase 'Nonfiction books about the Civil Rights Movement', which Marcocapelle endorsed above. Randy Kryn (talk) 23:06, 21 August 2024 (UTC)
- Outside of the United States it is a more generic concept which makes a disambiguator fairly common, e.g. [1]. Although in this example it is "American" rather than "African-American". Note that I fully understand that the article here on en.wp does not have a disambiguator, simply because a large amount of readers live in the United States. Marcocapelle (talk) 04:07, 22 August 2024 (UTC)

- Comment – For what it's worth, as a native English speaker from outside of the American bubble, I would generally hear it referred to as "the American civil rights movement". I don't think "African-" is a necessary disambiguator. We do sometimes disambiguate categories even when the article is (supposedly) the primary topic. There are other civil rights movements. Based on the names of the other civil rights movement articles, the main category for this one should be Category:Civil rights movement (1954–1968) and subcategories would follow that disambiguation. Mclay1 (talk) 14:27, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
- Mclay1, agreed that the name should include the years, and the main article used to be capitalized as a proper name. There are many 'civil rights movements' but only one 'Civil Rights Movement', proper name, which occurred in America between 1954 and 1968 and was organized and otherwise run throughout by the same relatively few people. Randy Kryn (talk) 15:02, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
- The idea that there's only one "Civil Rights Movement" is an American bias (even if it comes from someone from outside of America due to cultural imperialism). People from Northern Ireland, for example, would refer to the civil rights movement in their country as "the civil rights movement". They're not going to draw a distinction between theirs and another country's based on capital letters. Mclay1 (talk) 15:57, 27 August 2024 (UTC)

Rename per parent category Category:Works about the civil rights movement. If you don't like the name of the parent category, the solution is to propose renaming the entire category tree, not by creating confusion one by one (and I would likely support such a rename of the entire tree). Having one (and only one) category with extra disambiguation where there is consensus to avoid that disambiguation is a WP:LOCALCONSENSUS issue, and I would urge us to avoid that. Part of consensus is doing your best to uphold it even when you disagree with it, and I commend Randy Kryn for doing so.
I would add that having this one category with a more clear name actually makes the names of other categories less clear: I could certainly see myself placing a work about an unrelated civil rights movement in Category:Works about the civil rights movement thinking if it was about the American civil rights movement it would say so like its subcategory Category:Non-fiction books about the African-American civil rights movement. Best, HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 22:52, 28 August 2024 (UTC)
- Agree that the whole tree should be renamed. Marcocapelle (talk) 04:15, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- Let's just expand this discussion to be about the whole tree then and tag those other categories. Mclay1 (talk) 01:54, 31 August 2024 (UTC)
- Based on the source I quoted and on Mclay1's comment I would be happy with renaming to Category:Non-fiction books about the American civil rights movement (without "African-"). Marcocapelle (talk) 04:15, 29 August 2024 (UTC)
- Civil rights movement is an article with a proper name, even if editors lowercased it several years ago. The Civil Rights Movement, as I've said, is a proper name for the 1954-1968 Civil Rights Movement, so this nomination follows WP:CATNAME and WP:C2C. If editors want to change the category or category tree to a different name I'd suggest 'Non-fiction books about the 1954-1968 Civil Rights Movement' as 'American civil rights movement' is not or was not the proper name of either the movement or the name of the parent article. Thanks. Randy Kryn (talk) 13:49, 31 August 2024 (UTC)
- The name of the movement is whatever name it is given by sources, which vary, and multiple sources call it "the American civil rights movement". Mclay1 (talk) 01:18, 5 September 2024 (UTC)

- Comment, if this goes ahead, category scripts in articles need to be adapted accordingly, e.g. in article Riga Dome Choir School, while in fact neither an education nor a schools stub category exists. Is it worth the effort? Marcocapelle (talk) 05:22, 20 August 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose – Other countries use the same name format: Template:UK-edu-stub, Template:Poland-edu-stub. Better to use the broader name. Category:European school stubs is a subcategory of Category:Europe education stubs, and it would appear that, in this case, there's no need to categorise Latvian education articles more specifically. If there is, Template:Latvia-school-stub can be started as a new template. Also, why would we supress the redirect? Plenty of stub templates have redirects. See Category:Redirects to stub templates. Mclay1 (talk) 16:10, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
- Oppose. Redirects are WP:CHEAP and this is a plausible term, especially considering it has incoming links. We also should not worry about the databases. Best, HouseBlaster (talk • he/they) 17:09, 27 August 2024 (UTC)
