Kublai Khan[N 1] is an American metalcore band from Sherman, Texas. The group formed in the summer of 2009[7] they have released five albums, and two EPs.

Career

[edit]

Kublai Khan self-released their first EP, Youth War, in 2010.[8] In February 2014, Kublai Khan signed to Artery Recordings.[9] On April 29, 2014, the band released their debut full-length album titled Balancing Survival and Happiness.[10] The album was listed in Alternative Press' "The Best Albums of 2014 so far" list.[11][12] On November 27, 2015, Kublai Khan released their second album titled New Strength.[13][14][15] In July 2017, Kublai Khan signed to Rise Records, and on September 29, 2017, they released their third full-length album titled Nomad.[16] In 2019, the band released their fourth full-length album Absolute.

In February 2022, the band announced the upcoming release of their new EP Lowest Form of Animal, which was later released on April 1, 2022. The single, Swan Song (feat. Scott Vogel) is the most successful song from that release.

In 2023, their single Theory of Mind was released and has become one of their biggest songs to date.

In 2024, they released the single, Low Tech, which received a similar reception to Theory of Mind. The band also released an alternate version of the Lamb of God song, Another Nail In Your Coffin, featuring themselves and Malevolence.

On September 20th, 2024, the band released their fifth album Exhibition Of Prowess.

Musical style and lyrics

[edit]

Kublai Khan play a style of metalcore reminiscent of the early 1990s metallic hardcore scene (Integrity, Earth Crisis, All Out War, Hatebreed). The band employs heavy, slow breakdowns, heavily downtuned guitars (sometimes 7 string guitars tuned to drop G#) and raspy vocals.

They also touch on socially conscious issues such as racism ("Color Code", "No Kin"), human rights, violent police profiling or brutality ("True Fear"), organized religion ("B.C."), depression ("Belligerent"), social anxiety ("The Hammer"),[17] and violence against women/the sex trade ("Swan Song").[18]
