Lore[]

Upbringing[]

Katarina was born the eldest daughter of Marcus Du Couteau, and while her sister Cassiopeia often won the attention of their mother, Katarina was raised under the tutelage and guidance of her father to become one of the most precise assassins in all of Noxus. General Du Couteau was a strict teacher who was difficult to impress, and after years of training Katarina hoped to win her father's approval and the approval of the empire by performing exceedingly complex missions, even testing different poisons on herself to test her own resistance to them.

One day, Katarina was tasked with assassinating an enemy line officer known as Demetrius, but seeing the task as a waste of her talents, Katarina disobeyed orders and instead assassinated the enemy commander. However, this proved to be a terrible error of judgment, as Demetrius took charge of the enemy forces and killed dozens of Noxian soldiers, nearly costing the general his life.

Furious with his daughter's disobedience, Marcus sent his adoptive son and protege, the assassin known as Talon, to kill Katarina. Their battle was brief and Katarina left the encounter with her life intact, but with a new scar over her left eye. Six hours later, Katarina killed Demetrius as a recognition of her own failure, with her scar as a permanent reminder of it. Humbled by the consequences, Katarina realized she had lost her father's favor, but hoped to someday redeem herself in both his eyes and the empire by putting her talents to good use.

The Sinister Blade[]

Following a coup, Grand General Boram Darkwill was publicly executed by the demonic magic of Jericho Swain, who seized power and established the Trifarix in Darkwill's place. Four years later, Katarina's father mysteriously went missing, and Katarina assumed he had been killed. Still, as a supporter of the new regime, Katarina made certain to make her skills known to Swain, and in time, rose to a position as one of his most loyal and deadly assassins. She spent the next few years eliminating Swain's political rivals, cutting down rogue warbands, and silencing those who still believed in Darkwill's reign. This, Katarina believed, was to ensure a brighter future for a Noxus without tyrants or prejudice, where all people in the empire would be given the chance to thrive.

Most recently, Katarina was assigned on a covert mission to the Great City of Demacia, where she was to assassinate Luxanna Crownguard and King Jarvan III during the chaos of Sylas' Mage Rebellion. Before setting out, however, she was shocked to discover that her father, Marcus Du Couteau, was alive, and had in fact faked his own death on Swain's orders. Mistrustful of Swain, Marcus advised Katarina the Grand General had likely betrayed them both and intended for her to die, but she decided to follow through on her mission anyway.

Upon finding Lux, who Swain had deemed a threat to Noxus, Katarina decided against killing her, as she sympathized with the rejection the young mage felt from her family, and realized Lux did not agree with the corrupt hierarchy of Demacian society. Nonetheless, she judged King Jarvan III to be both a tyrant and a traitor to his people, as he oppressed the mages just because they had the strength to overthrow him. After sneaking into his saferoom, Katarina killed the king and escaped undetected by the Demacian guards, who then pinned the blame on Sylas and his rebellion.

After killing Jarvan III, Katarina proceeded to try and escape from Demacia, she climbed to the highest tower of the castle and saw that the only way out was the great gates of the city which were closing due to Sylas attack. However, her escape attempt was interrupted by the arrival of Garen, who was told that she was a mage and was helping Sylas by Jaredin. The two engaged in a short but fierce fight that abruptly ended after they witnessed an explosion that signalled the start of the mage rebellion. Seeing that they couldn't stay longer, the two parted ways, and Katarina re-focused on trying to escape Demacia.

As she continued climbing and jumping across the roofs of the city, grateful for the tremendous distraction that Lux was causing, Katarina found a winged guardian with her silver wing, Katarina stealthily put her dagger to his throat. The guardian warned him that if he killed him, his silverwing would not obey her, since the bird was only loyal to him. Katarina, smiling, began to force the soldier to give orders to his bird and the two flew out of the city. But out of nowhere the arrow from a crossbow ended up hitting the rider, alarming her mount, which got upset and threw Katarina from her back but not before scratching her in the ribs and breaking one of her daggers. It is revealed that Captain Jaredan was responsible for shooting that arrow.

Katarina fell abruptly to the ground, remaining unconscious till the next day, when she found out she had fortunately landed on a magical snail in one of Demacia's magical forests. She quickly made it back to the teahouse to tell Drann of her adventures, and the two discuss the person who Captain Jaredan actually is along with who was really in the wrong. Realising that things may not be what she thought, Katarina resolved to return to her home to confront Talon about the truth.

When Katarina confronted her brother, she quickly realised her fears were true. Her father had been home and Talon had helped him. The two started fighting with Talon taking the upperhand. Before he could deal the fatal blow with Katarina's dagger, she took her broken dagger and cut his right eye. As she leaves the mansion, she says to her brother that she wishes that he would follow his own path instead of following her father's orders blindly, vowing that she will end his life if he chose not to.

After spending the night at Drann's Tea House, Katarina and Drann perform a bonding ritual to link her to her new blades. This connection enables her to teleport to the weapons and vice versa. Intent on protecting Swain from her father, she heads towards Swain's quarters. When her father arrives, a final battle ensues, shrouded in smoke and lasting for an arduous duration. Ultimately, Katarina emerges victorious. In a desperate attempt to eliminate Swain, Marcus decides to sacrifice himself by igniting a Wolf's Maw, an explosive capable of obliterating the entire structure along with Swain and Katarina. In order to prevent this, Katarina swiftly hurls the explosive out of Marcus' grasp using her dagger. Sacrificing herself in turn, she then throws her blade, intending to teleport to it before the device detonates.

However, Swain unexpectedly intervenes. Seizing the explosive from Katarina, he redirects the impending blast with his demonic powers toward her father, instantly incinerating him. In the aftermath of the battle, Swain mentions that Katarina is his failsafe, the only person who could kill him if his demon would take control of him. After fully embracing her role as Swain's assassin, she kills Jaredan two months later in Northern Freljord.

Gameplay[]

In game, Katarina is an assassin-type character, using high mobility and damage output to dart past enemy lines. Her passive, Voracity, reduces the cooldown of her abilities when enemies she damages die. Katarina can use Bouncing Blade to throw ricocheting daggers at enemies, Preparation to gain movement speed, and Shunpo to dash to targets. Katarina can also use her ultimate, Death Lotus, to throw a flurry of blades around her in a circular motion.

Personality[]

In her youth, Katarina was a hotheaded individual with an aggressive approach when facing her enemies, always ambitious and eager to prove her worth to her father. This, however, was deemed reckless by her family, and since then, Katarina has worked to reevaluate her approach in her missions, to both fulfill her duty to Noxus and to redeem herself in her father's eyes. Feeling rejected by most of her family, Katarina embraces the new Trifarian regime of Swain, which she believes has changed Noxus for the better. She denounces Darkwill as a needlessly-brutal tyrant, and trusts Swain to eliminate all prejudice in the empire, despite the terrifying dark magic he wields (which led the rest of her family to align with the Black Rose).

Katarina's loyalty to Noxus is unwavering, and she hopes to die in battle for the empire one day. In contrast with Talon, Katarina believes in honorable combat over deadly efficiency, as she often gives her opponents a chance to fight back if she respects them enough (even at the risk of her own life). Their differing methods make them rivals, with Katarina often defying her father and Talon remaining loyal to him. Despite this, Katarina has expressed willingness to forgive her brother, and doesn't seek revenge for his assassination attempts against her. She also shows mercy to Lux against her orders, as she believed Lux would make a "good Noxian". Her villainous actions aside, Katarina believes they are morally justified and for the greater good of Noxus.
