The Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024 concluded recently in Apia, #Samoa, where Commonwealth leaders convened under the theme, “One Resilient Common Future: Transforming our Common Wealth.” During the summit, heads of government reaffirmed their commitments to addressing global economic, environmental, and security challenges, while fostering resilience, sustainable trade, and inclusive growth, emphasising empowering youth and women. In this landmark year marking the Commonwealth’s 75th anniversary, leaders celebrated the unity and diversity of the 56-member states, representing a collective of 2.7 billion people, with over 60% under 30. The Commonwealth also announced that Antigua and Barbuda would assume the role of the next Chair-in-Office and host of the subsequent #CHOGM, underscoring a shared vision for a resilient and prosperous future among all member nations. Remembrance Day, also known as Poppy Day, is observed across Commonwealth countries to honour the brave members of the armed forces who sacrificed their lives in service. Celebrated annually since the end of the First World War, #RemembranceDay uses the red poppy as a symbol of sacrifice, resilience, and tribute to fallen soldiers. The poppy's use as a wartime symbol dates back to the early 19th century during the Napoleonic campaigns when bright red poppies bloomed across fields following battles. This symbolic flower gained renewed meaning after the First World War, inspiring Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae to write the now-famous poem "In Flanders Fields." Moved by the poem, American teacher Moina Michael pledged to wear a poppy as a symbol of remembrance for fallen soldiers. The movement quickly spread internationally when Madame Guerin of France began distributing handmade poppies to raise funds for war orphans. By 1921, the Great War Veterans' Association (now the Royal Canadian Legion) officially adopted the poppy as the Flower of Remembrance. Each year, people wear the red poppy from the last Friday in October until Remembrance Day on November 11. The poppy reminds us of the courage, sacrifice, and enduring legacy of those who served in the armed forces, allowing generations to pay tribute to their memory. This day is typically celebrated with parades, cultural events, and ceremonies highlighting Maldivian independence and national pride. In a significant gathering at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024 in Apia, #Samoa, Ankita Yadav, representing the Commonwealth Chamber of Commerce met with Hon Mulipola Anarosa Ale-Molio’o, Samoa’s Minister for Women, Community, and Social Development. The encounter occurred during the Women’s Forum, a key event of the #CHOGM proceedings. Minister Ale-Molio’o delivered a powerful message, emphasizing the urgent need for action on gender equality. She stressed that the forum’s purpose extended beyond mere discussion, calling for concrete steps towards change. The Minister expressed her belief in the collective power of the attendees to drive meaningful and lasting transformation across the Commonwealth and beyond. The Women’s Forum, which concluded on 22 October 2024, was a collaborative effort between the Commonwealth Secretariat and the Samoan Government. Ankita Yadav, our representative from the Commonwealth Chamber of Commerce, recently had the opportunity to meet with Hon Myles Laroda, Member of Parliament and Minister for Social Services, Information, and Broadcasting of The Bahamas, during the Women’s Forum at the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) 2024 held in Apia, Samoa. At the forum, government, environmental groups, and civil society experts gathered to discuss strategies for closing critical gaps in representation, data, and financing to ensure women are fully engaged in climate action—from policymaking to on-the-ground implementation. Hon Myles K. LaRoda spoke passionately on the issue, drawing from the recent experiences of #TheBahamas, which faced the devastation of Hurricane Dorian, a category five storm. The forum discussions centred on the critical issue of climate change, which has taken a central role in the talks, especially for Pacific nations. Climate change emerged as a dominant theme at CHOGM. This emphasis is crucial for Pacific nations disproportionately affected by climate impacts. This was especially significant for Pacific members, with the announcement that COP 31, scheduled for 2026, will be jointly hosted by Australia and the Pacific. During the summit, Tuvalu, Fiji, and Vanuatu launched the latest report on the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty Initiative, which specifically targeted Australia’s coal and gas industries. The event took place in the stunning island nation of Samoa, bringing together leaders, policymakers, and business leaders from across the Commonwealth. The event was held in Apia, the capital of #Samoa. It featured high-level forums and vibrant discussions. These discussions focused on global issues and opportunities for collaboration among Commonwealth nations. Key Forums at #CHOGM2024: The People Forum: Focused on empowering communities with inclusive policies. The Women’s Forum: Discussed challenges and progress in women’s rights and gender equality. The Youth Forum: Engaged young leaders on topics like education, climate action, and leadership. The Business Forum: Explored innovation, sustainable business practices, and economic growth strategies. Many local businesses had the chance to showcase their products and innovations during a vibrant exhibition. This contributed to the broader conversation on building economic sustainability across the region. Prince Charles, a long-time champion of the Commonwealth, and Queen Camilla were present at the event. Their attendance symbolised global unity and added prestige to the event. One of the highlights was a session led by Commonwealth Secretary-General Patricia Scotland. She discussed ongoing efforts to reduce gender disparities and elevate women’s voices in global conversations. Music played a key role at CHOGM 2024. The Commonwealth Resounds, a network of singers, performed “Only Love” by Lorraine Lionheart, a singer-songwriter from Botswana. The song’s powerful message of unity and love resonated deeply with attendees. A photography competition added a creative element to the event. Winning photographs captured the diversity and shared aspirations of the Commonwealth. The exhibition highlighted landscapes and personal stories from across the member states. The event concluded with delegates reaffirming their commitment to creating a sustainable, resilient, and inclusive future.
