Another big tech company shooting themselves in the foot by making blanket policies. 🤯🔫 The same big companies have rules against outside IR35 hiring of contractors. - We won’t tax our flexible workforce properly - We won’t give you properly secure permie jobs either - We won’t offer WFH incentives So what, exactly, big tech… are you… offering? 🤔 anyone with an ounce of talent is going to have plenty of options, permanent or contract, despite the job market being somewhat volatile. A blanket policy is a blunt force tool and uses the same mantra as punishment drills in sport: to catch the odd one or two bad actors, the whole team has to do something gruelling. And this is the best that the ‘leaders’ of these massive corps can come up with? Good news is, if you’re a smaller, more agile and more sensible business who likes working with likeminded talented people.. you’ll no doubt have the right policies in place, will let people WFH, engage with contractors properly, and you’re gonna be just fine 👍

Let's talk compensation for interviewing...💬 Tech tests and live coding defiantly splits the community down the middle but yesterday I saw something I've not seen before, this particular company offer a £50 voucher for completing their technical task as they appreciate your time is valuable. 💰 🤝 Some would say if you want to go through an interview process you have to accept that you have to give up some of your time. 🤔 ⏳ Is this something that should be the norm? How are people getting on with finding Front End Developer roles? I am speaking to some serious talent in terms of Front End Development, React, Next.js and also Angular but a lot seem to be struggling to secure their next permanent role, following an unfortunate redundancy situation in their last position. I am finding that my clients and hiring managers are wanting to hire either back end or full stack (business logic) focused developers who can do front end. OR Product Design / UX who can do a bit of front end. Just wondering how others are finding their job search as a UI Developer?

What is it with job applications at the moment? 24 hours ago I posted a react developer role right before heading out for the rest of the day and I've come back this morning to 254 applicants, 57 connection requests and 42 linked in messages. Still working through them but at first glance the large majority aren't remotely suitable for various reasons including: 👉 No mention of React on the CV 👉 Not based in the right country 👉 Never worked in software or IT 👉 Not eligible to work in the UK There has to be a better way for everyone involved? It's incredibly time consuming screening applicants and filtering that list and good candidates get frustrated that they never hear back from recruiters and got lost in the shuffle. I have job board and linked in filters for out of country applicants and legal right to work in the UK + 4 pre-screening questions for react development experience but they don't seem to work. Does anyone have any ideas of better ways for this to work? Any new tools out there that can manage this? Developers, don't get bullied! Don't comprise significantly!! It's not worth it. I have had a number of conversations recently where developers have stayed with companies for short periods of time for different reasons. 1 short stint at a business can be explained so long as the rest of your CV supports it. However, don't be bullied or blinded by shiny things to compromise on your original search. The grass isn't always greener and you will be looking to move before you are settled in. - Don't move for big money at the cost of enjoyment or happiness - Don't take that promotion to be a senior too early in your career - Don't accept a role that is outside your core responsibilities if you don't feel comfortable -Don't change technologies to secure employment if you don't plan too - Don't jeopardise your working style (Hybrid, remote, flexible hours) - Don't become a people manager if you want to remain an IC It's tough at the moment but staying true to who you are will shine through and help you achieve your long-term goals. Too many short roles will harm your reputation and then blaming every company for them doesn't look great. Have a good day everyone!

Some of the BEST Software Engineers I've worked with have some of the WORST CVs I've ever seen. And some simply do not have one. The top 5% of talent are not scouting out new roles and applying to adverts... ..they're headhunted. So there's simply no need to create a CV. And that's where the job of a Recruiter comes in, to shine a spotlight on those who are unseen in the market, or to fill in the gaps on those awfully written CVs. "I saw a Senior Developer role advertised for £40,000 last week Josh" 🤯 This is what a candidate said to me yesterday. I have 45 calls lines up across Monday to Wednesday this week for a project I am working on for a SaaS company (Exciting!) One thing I noticed yesterday speaking to developers on how they are finding the market is that salary bandings are just so broad. I have seen it myself. 👀 There are companies that are paying what they need to to get the right talent in and doing some bl**dy good hiring 🔥 And then there are companies that I can't help but feel are still trying to take advantage of the market and paying way under the market value. What do you think? Are they trying to save the pennies, avoid paying more than their current staff (which need a pay rise) or do they just not have the budget? 🤷‍♂️ #softwarejobs #marketinsights #salaries

Honestly it's not rocket science!!! 🚀 If you read a CV and moan the developer doesn't state the tech stack they are using in their current role, guess how annoying it is when a developer looks at your company advert and YOU don't advertise the tech stack they'll be using 🤯 There are some good Job Adverts and there are some shocking ones. Market update; June 2024.   I’m still receiving DMs from developers either out of work or struggling to find something new.   Here’s a bit of a random dump from me, based on chats I’ve had with clients that might help. Definitely not all doom & gloom but I'm being honest also; - Applying to recession proof businesses; If you’re looking for a role, think about industries like health funds/insurance/utilities/superannuation etc; strong industries needed in our society that always have cash (usually). Whereas SAAS/product/Fintech seem to be trying to stay lean.. - CTOs; are telling me they have projects they need to kick off (platform re-architectures etc) but their CEOs aren’t giving them the budgets they need. It’s a case of doing their best with the team they have. This is another reason were seeing less roles advertised. - Doing more with less; There’s more pressure on senior & staff engineers to be able to demonstrate they have a solid understanding of tech but can also deliver at speed, meaning they have to focus on quality AND shipping, which in theory improves profit. Also with less hiring on-shore due to budget constraints, this means a leaner team, meaning existing teams have to deliver. - Junior engineers; To land roles, juniors need to show proactiveness and the ability to get things done. This would position them closer to the expectations of a mid which is what hiring managers want right now (theyre just not telling you). - Consultancies; A few businesses have reduced their local teams, to move to an outsourced model as they minimise perm headcount. This means these consulting businesses are busy and are hiring. So your Accentures/TCSs of the world could be good places to apply if you're looking? - New fin year; is approaching meaning new budgets & usually more roles. However this doesn’t mean from July 1 you’ll see a huge influx of roles posted. One CTO I chatted to has been given the same capex budget as he was for last year (not great). - Fully remote roles; becoming rarer. Most businesses require 2 days a week in office (some, not all). If remote is your jam, try to find work in startups/small businesses wheres theres flex (that said, I do know some corporates contradicting what they’re saying; letting some of their high performing contractors work interstate). - Ignore job boards; Roles are getting filled quickly due to so many candidates on the market & not even making it to the internet. Just because you don’t see a live role in a companies careers page, doesn’t mean they’re not hiring. If it’s a solid business, send them your details. - “I’m applying for roles and not hearing anything” and the likelihood is you never will unless selected for interview. Some companies will be getting 1000 applications a week for 1 role. They cant reply to everyone. Don’t take it personally. - The green banner debacle; it doesn’t make you look desperate. Demand for Intermediate-level Software Developers is decreasing, resulting in salary levels on offer declining. For the time being it appears that the days of intermediate developers securing 15% - 20% pay increases when moving jobs are over.   Current advertised salaries for software developers in the UK (3 months to June 2024) are down to 2019 levels.   Is this trend mirrored elsewhere in the world? What are the causes for this?

🤙🏼🤙🏼The results are in🤙🏼🤙🏼 🙏🏼 Two weeks ago I was privileged enough to give my talk “confident communication for developers and why it matters” at DDD South West 📊 I recently received my feedback (which 35 people who came to my talk were kind enough to give). 😳Firstly I want to thank all the people who were kind enough to come to the talk - this was my first conference talk ever and the room was much more full than I was expecting!!! I really hope I delivered some value but what does the feedback say?? 💪🏽 Well, of the 35 feedback responses, my average speaker knowledge score was ❗4.83/5❗ and my average speaker skills was ❗4.89/5❗ which is actually stonks 📈📈📈 💕 There was so much good constructive feedback, thanks to everyone who gave it, I’ll use it to improve this talk in case I give it again. 🤩 By far the kindest feedback I received was “Best talk I’ve heard in a long time! If this would have been the only thing I’ve heard this day it would still worth it!” (sic). 🔮 I’m thinking of doing more talks like this in future: to anyone who came or anyone else to be honest, what are your thoughts on similar talks on this topic??? You know what's really cool to do as an employer... ... Pay people what they're worth (irrelevant of market conditions) 💡 I'm seeing a worrying trend at the moment - Companies looking for Software Developers with 6+ years experience, but not willing to pay more than £35k 😕 Look... I understand budget restraints... And as the owner of a start-up, I get that companies pockets are only so deep! But if your pockets are only deep enough to get someone with 2-3 years' experience... Stop looking for people with 6 years+ in the hopes that they'll bite your hand off because the hiring landscape isn't all that great at the moment! If you play the game like this, yeah, you MIGHT get a quick win now, but in 12 months time, when the market shifts (as it always does) your competitors will be queuing up to pay them what they're actually worth... And you'll be left back at square one!!
