"The Red chose me to be its protector, fine. I'm in. I'll do it. But I will not abandon the people I love most."
—Gar Logan to Dominic Mndawe [src]

Garfield "Gar" Logan (born c. 2003)[8] is a shape-shifter metahuman who formerly resided in Caulder house and a former member of the Doom Patrol under the care of Dr. Niles Caulder aka the Chief.

Seeking adventure in the outside world, Gar befriended and rescued a girl named Rachel Roth and took her in. He eventually befriended her guardians, Dick Grayson and Kory Anders. Gar later joined the Titans and accompanied them on their mission to destroy a cult known as the Organization. As the Titans gained notoriety for their heroic acts in San Francisco, it was by this time that Gar officially became known as the hero Beast Boy.

As a Titan, Gar fights against the Church of Blood and their leaders Mother Mayhem and Brother Blood all while dealing with a newly discovered connection to the mysterious plane known as The Red.

Biography

Early life

Garfield Logan was born in c. 2003 to Marie and Mark Logan.[8]

Not much is known about Gar's childhood, but both Gar's father and mother traveled the world for work and would bring him along with them. On one such occasion as a child, he was left alone at the Central City Zoo and was found by a keeper near the gorilla enclosure, when she attempted to leave he begged not to be left alone and said nothing when she tried to reassure him that she would be getting his parents. After she left, Gar appeared to suffer a sudden migraine attack and saw visions of multiple red animals. In 2017, Gar lived with his parents at a research camp in the Congo basin where Dr. Niles Caulder purposefully released a virus known as the Green Plague that killed all the camp's occupants, including Gar's parents, and left Gar as the only survivor.[9]

Gar becomes a meta-human

Gar becomes a meta-human.

After doctors abandoned the camp, believing all the residents had perished, Caulder found him and cured him, albeit with some side effects. He was then brought to America where he lived with Caulder and a number of others in Caulder house in Covington, Ohio in the United States of America.[8]

During Titans

Meeting Rachel

In 2018, Gar robbed a Visions Electronics while in the form of a tiger, stealing Xbox video games, before running away and turning back into a human form.[10] While attending Scooters Roller Skating Rink another day, Gar noticed a girl named Rachel Roth playing on a pinball machine. He instantly befriended her, complimenting her hair. However, she was pulled away and had to leave, leaving him disappointed.[11]

Cliff disciplines Rachel and Gar

Gar and Rachel are dragged to the main hall, by Cliff, demanding that she must leave.

Shortly following, Gar, as a tiger, found Rachel in a forest near Saint Paul's Convent. Having seen her blow up half of the convent and run away, he allowed her to follow him to the Caulder house. However, on the way there, they encountered hunters who had shot a deer. Despite scaring off the hunters by turning into a tiger, he gave Rachel time to grieve the death of the shot animal. Eventually reaching Caulder house, Gar sneaked Rachel into his room but they were interrupted by Cliff. Gar prompted Rachel to hide in the closet, while Gar told lies that he went out for a video game controller. Just when it was believed that Cliff was exiting the room, he quickly discovered Rachel's hiding place and dragged them both to the main hall of the house. Gar answered inquisitive questions, from Rachel, as to how Cliff came into existence, describing Caulder as the "greatest doctor in the world", and even implied that there were others who lived in the manor. After Rachel wandered off and met Larry, they all agreed to let her stay for dinner. Sent to summon Rita Farr for dinner, to no avail, Gar returned.

During dinner, they were interrupted by Caulder, who needed all of their assistance with a new patient, Shyleen Lao. Following a successful outcome, Gar was harshly scolded by Caulder for disobeying him and bringing Rachel into their residence. However, he sought interest in Rachel's ability, allowing Gar to tell him all that he knew about her. During dessert, Gar, along with everyone else, could attest to Caulder's miracles when saving their lives. With a lot of convincing Rachel agreed. Caulder proceeded to experiment on Rachel by strapping her to a medical table but Rachel chose to abort the procedure. Seeing how uncomfortable it made her, Gar began to rebel but was tranquilized. Gar regained consciousness around the time Dick and Kory came to save Rachel. Following this, Gar chose to leave with Rachel and her friends, hoping to live a more normal life.[8]

A new team

Gar stands naked in front of his friends

Gar unintentionally flashes Kory, Dick and Rachel after changing back to normal.

Making their way to Do-Si-Do Motel, they hoped to lay low. However, Gar was surprised to discover that Rachel and her friends were being pursued by enemies. It is eventually decided by Dick that they need to understand each other's abilities and they are taken to a vacant barnyard. Everyone showcased their powers, leaving Gar especially impressed with Kory. However, when it came to him, he nervously explained that he needed to be unclothed in order to shape-shift or else he would tear through his clothing. Having everyone turn away upon request, he transformed into a green tiger, leaving them all bewildered and entertained by his brief nudity. When it came to Rachel, she nearly lost control and nearly attacked them until things were back under control. Dick, on the other hand, refused to demonstrate anything.

That night, Gar and Rachel bonded. Upon being asked, Gar intricately explained how it felt to transform into a tiger, finding some amusement in it. Back inside of his hotel room, Gar was startled by the appearance of the Nuclear family, specifically Sis and Biff, who attacked Kory. Ordered by Kory to get Rachel to safety, Gar and Rachel waited in the parking lot until Kory met up with them, but they were eventually surrounded. Suddenly, they were saved at the last minute by Dick. To Gar's amazement, Dick was disguised as Robin. They pooled their resources and overpowered the Nuclear family and tied them up. Gar and Rachel interrogated Sis and Biff to no avail. Ultimately, Gar met Dick just as he was about to leave, questioning if he could ever get to meet Batman.[3]

When Dick is located, Gar was taken to a safe house where he met Jason Todd and learned that he was also a Robin. This left Gar astonished yet again.[12]

A breaking point

Gar is abused at Agnews Asylum

Gar is tasered by multiple scientists who want to be shown "what" he is.

During a meeting, Gar listened in on whether or not Rachel should be allowed to speak with Adamson privately. Given permission, it was revealed that Rachel's birth mother, Angela Azarath, was alive and being held in an asylum. Rachel begged everyone to help rescue her, including Gar, but they all implied that it was too dangerous. Gar followed her as she exited the room in a rage and revealed that he was willing to secretly help. By using Kory's uber account, they located the asylum. Although Rachel expressed that she would be worried to not be recognized, Gar attempted to reassure her that it would be opposite. Outside of the asylum, both teens observed from a safe distance when they were suddenly ambushed and tazed until they are both unconscious.

Gar is eventually drugged and put in a wheelchair where they proceed to lock him in a cage and torture him by experimenting on him with electric shocks. Being left alone, he is surprised to Rachel arrive with her mother to help rescue him. His cage was unlocked but a scientist is nearby and attempted to attack Rachel and her mother. However, Gar transformed into a tiger and instinctively mauled the scientist to death. After he snapped out of it, he regretted his actions. Eventually, Gar assisted Rachel in liberating both Dick and Kory and they all fight their way out of the asylum, giving Kory the opportunity to ignite an explosion.[13]

The following day, Gar woke up to Rachel preparing breakfast and assisted her while joking about Dick and Kory's intimacy. Angela eventually entered the kitchen and, after hugging Rachel, offered Gar a chance to bond with them. Once everyone was awake, they shared breakfast and discussed their next plan: Finding a permanent place to stay. When Angela offered them a chance to stay at her family home in Ohio, they all agreed. Unfortunately, Dick planned to be elsewhere and left Gar with the rest of the team. They each gave their farewells, sadly watching as Dick drove off.[14]

Trauma and Trigon

Kory, Rachel, and Gar reach Ohio

Kory, Rachel, and Gar reach Angela's house in Ohio.

While on a train to Ohio, Gar remained with Kory in the dining car. When Kory stepped away briefly to get alcoholic drinks, Gar enlightened that Rachel and Angela found them seats in another car. Told that it would be best to let Rachel spend time alone with her mother, Kory was not as fun as he expected her to be. Later, Gar opened up to her about attacking the scientist and feelings of remorse. Even though she understood, she told him to never feel bad about defending himself. The topic went on into a rather uncomfortable one, with Kory making implications that Gar had a crush on Rachel. Asking if he could have a shot of alcohol, he had an unfavorable reaction to it. Afterward, Kory momentarily stepped away and soon after, the train stopped moving, thus allowing Gar to nap. He was then startled awake by Kory who rushed him to find Angela and Rachel and get them off the train. After evacuating the train, Gar turned into a tiger and scared a man off, having him leave his truck. With the truck now in their possession, they picked up Kory and drove the rest of the way to Ohio.

At some point, Gar was present when Kory revealed she was having difficulties with her memories and Rachel offered to help. However, Gar got a rather unsettling feeling about it before Kory began to suddenly choke her.[14] Gar made an attempt to jog Kory's memory but failed and ended up being grabbed by the throat and thrown into Dick as he entered the house, stunning both of them. After Donna Troy subdued Kory, Gar expressed his knowledge of who she was, to which she reacted indifferently.

Rachel tries to heal Gar

Gar attains a mysterious illness that causes him to bleed internally.

After Kory fled, Gar sat with Rachel to speak about what the predicament. Although Rachel suspected that she might have been the cause of Kory's reaction, Gar insisted that it was not her fault and that Kory would return. Still doubting herself, she told Gar that he should leave before he got hurt as well. Attempting to comfort her, Rachel's demon persona reflexively lashed out at him. Meanwhile, Angela brought them both lunch to eat, Gar stepped away to clear his mind. He wandered upstairs into a bedroom and came across old photographs. However, when stumbling across a mirror, he saw what appeared to be a reflection of himself with blood around his mouth. Terrified, he exited the house and attempted to call Dick, but his phone strangely lost connection. Suddenly, he saw a gory illusion of the doctor, from the asylum, that he killed. Rachel then exited the house and approached Gar. He told her that there was something wrong with the house but wrote it off as exhaustion and returned to the house to rest. Later that night, Gar woke up feeling terribly ill. Evaluating himself in the bathroom, he collapsed and started bleeding from the mouth, nose, and ears. Through Rachel's failed attempt to heal him, Trigon was contacted and managed to heal Gar instead.[15]

Gar turns into a snake

Due to unclear circumstances, Gar silently turns into a snake after enduring extreme harm.

After making a successful recovery, Gar overheard Trigon offering Rachel a chance to side with him. Decisively, Gar denied Trigon and attempted to escape with Rachel. Gar and Rachel ran through the house, locking themselves up in a bedroom while dark Dick chased them. When looking out of the bedroom window, Gar noticed that the rest of the party, consisting of Kory, Donna, Hank, Dawn, and Jason were kept outside. Eventually, locating a secret passageway, they found themselves back in the living room, this time surrounded by the recently possessed Titans. They proceeded to assault Gar, much to Rachel's distress. When Rachel begged to Dick for it to stop, Dick picked up Gar and threw him across the room, killing him. Gar, however, somehow resurrected and transformed into a snake, sneaking up behind a now-possessed Rachel. He was able to convince her to snap out of it before reverting Dick. Gar stood on the sidelines as Rachel managed to defeat her father. Eventually, Gar, and Jason left with Dick. They headed to San Francisco, where they acquainted themselves with the old Titans' base of operations.[16]

Joining the Titans

Living in Titans Tower for the next three months, the newly-formed team began training. Using Dick's suggestion of a blindfold, Gar and Jason fought with wooden swords. However, Jason became annoyed when Gar properly hit him on the head, leading to Dick stressing the importance of the exercise. That night, Gar went to offer Rachel some food. She invited him in and they discussed how she'd been feeling different. Their conversation was interrupted when lights flickered through the window, and they joined the rest of the team in the living room as helicopters flew past the tower. They turned on the news, seeing news of a girl fleeing from police. Impressed with her skills, Dick went to retrieve her, bringing her unconsciously back to recuperate. While unconscious, Dick changed her bandage on her eye, and Gar noticed that not only did she have no eye but that the wound had healed unnaturally quick. When the girl came to, Dick talked to her, while the rest of the team discussed her in the training room. Wanting to find out who she was, Gar and Jason took her old bandage and analyzed the blood, finding her identity to be that of Rose Wilson, the daughter of Deathstroke.[4]

Gar and Jason look for Doctor Light

Gar is not so confident that he and Jason Todd should be disobeying Dick Grayson's rules.

The recent discovery is brought to Dick's attention and Gar attempted to do more research before being told by Dick that there is no need. A few moments later, Gar welcomed Hank, Donna, and Dawn into the tower upon their visit. Gar, Jason, and Rachel proceeded to have a sparring session, which was cut short due to Rachel's lost control of her powers and nearly attacked Jason. Fortunately, Gar was able to get through to Rachel and stopped her before things could escalate. Doing his job at keeping tabs on Doctor Light, a suspicious Dick asked Gar if Rachel was okay. Gar ultimately lied and kept everything a secret. As things with Doctor Light seemed to be more dire, Gar, Rachel, and Jason became somewhat curious. However, Gar witnessed Jason get ultimately disciplined for his behavior. Returning to manage the tower's computer, Gar is approached by Jason and is persuaded to secretively locate Doctor Light to prove themselves worthy. A reluctant Gar eventually gave in and the duo are led to a subway tunnel. As the two get separated momentarily, Gar heard Jason's painful screams. Frantically, he ran back to Jason's previous location and found that all that was left was a trail of blood.[17]

Gar returned to the Tower in need of assistance and ran to Rachel first. Seeing a strange cloud floating above her bed while she slept, Gar inquisitively touched it, having his wrist wounded by it. Treating it as something minor, Gar confessed that Jason was missing but was overheard by Dick. This led to Gar confessing everything to Dick and while Dick continued the search, Gar spoke to Rachel about the severity of the situation, which had everyone acting differently. As the guilt in Gar festered, he engaged in arguments with Rose and then Rachel, exchanging some unpleasant words with her. Although he meant to apologize, Jason's tracker was located and he informed the rest of the team.

The Titans react to Rose's death

Gar and the Titans enter the living room after Rachel "kills" Rose.

Upon Kory's return, she was privately briefed on what happened to Jason. Growing tired of the secrets, Gar suggested that he, Rose, and Rachel could eavesdrop on the cameras. As they are listening in, they learned some things about Deathstroke and their debate to surrender Rose. Bothered by their comments Rose attempted to escape the Tower, prompting Gar to confess to the team that they had been listening. When Rose was finally located by Gar and everyone else, she was left disfigured and seemingly dead after a confrontation with Rachel. However, her healing factor kicked in and resurrected in front of his very eyes. [5]

Meeting Conner and crossing paths with CADMUS

Following the rescue of Jason and the arrival of a young comrade, the tower was visited by a mysterious woman named Eve Watson and a dog named Krypto. Gar, who spoke to her through the intercom, was hesitant on letting her enter but was given permission by Kory.[18] Returning to bed for the rest of the day, Gar was awoken by quarreling between the Titans and Gar then was left alone at the Tower to watch after Conner Kent after hearing the Titans split up. Later then, he was awoken by Conner himself, who was naked. Gar and Conner soon bonded over their shared dark sides and played video games together, with Gar shocked by how well Conner was able to play. The following day, he took Conner for a walk outside the Tower near the park, showcasing some of his tiger powers; when Conner got a little too carried away, he was only trying to save a man who was getting arrested by the police, but then he ended up hurting several cops leaving them in critical condition. Gar was scared as he didn't know what to do, so he ran away.[19]

Sometime later, Gar looked on the computer news about Conner hurting the cops, then suddenly, Gar was alerted with Krypto ringing the doorbell. After that, he was reunited with Conner and then they all walked back to the Titans Tower, but three of them have been getting ambushed by Cadmus slap soldiers Gar then finally showed off his improved karate skills beating up a soldier, then turning into a tiger with Mercy surprised to see it through a screen. Gar then attacked another Cadmus soldier in his tiger form before getting tranquilized by Mercy. Gar was then used by Mercy as blackmail to get Conner to surrender into Cadmus' custody, and following Conner's agreement Gar passed out. He later woke up to find himself at Cadmus, wearing a tight containment suit preventing him from turning into a tiger. In a while, Mercy Graves walked in and had a conversation with him about Niles Caulder. Sometime later, he was shown watching The Wizard of Oz.[20]

Mercy was watching as a team of Cadmus scientists were conducting experiments on Gar, they removed part of his skull, exposed his brain. Their experiment preyed on Gar's subconscious resentments towards Rachel and caused him to shout insults about her. Mercy told the scientists to probe deeper, and Gar’s eyes began to turn green. Later, after they closed Gar's brain, Mercy was again watching Gar while he was in the room talking to a female Cadmus scientist. In Gar's mind, he was talking to Rachel in the Titans Tower; Mercy pressed a button and classical music began to play which triggered their control over Gar. The trigger forced him to transform into a tiger and attack the scientist in the room with him, believing she was Rachel due to their brainwashing. Mercy watched as the injured scientist begged her to let her out of the room, but Mercy just smiled as the tiger tore her colleague apart.[21]

Weaponization and fight with Subject 13

"They've weaponized Gar."
Donna Troy[src]

Gar was next shown in the same coffee shop Dick and Rachel visited in the beginning of the season, seemingly normal and buying himself a drink. Suddenly, classical music begins to play on the radio and the sound triggers him into transforming and attacking the other customers of the coffee shop; killing some. When Cadmus then collect him, Gar was confused and disorientated, and asked what he'd done. Mercy told him it was a test, and he'd done well.[22] The attack was later reported on the news and witnessed by a Cadmus employee shortly before his interrogation by Donna and Dawn.

With the coffee shop experiment a success, Gar was unleashed on Golden Gate Park where there was a fair on. As he was forced to hurt and kill attendee's of the fair, Cadmus brought in a brainwashed Conner as Subject-13 to fight him. He and Conner battle for some time, with Gar in his tiger form able to withstand many of Conner's hits before Conner finally threw Gar into a near by ride and knocked him unconscious. While the rest of the Titans distracted Conner, Rachel made it to Gar's side and after initially failing to get through to him, was able to break through his brainwashing. Gar was later seen with the Titans wrapped in a blanket and witnessed Donna's death when she saves Dawn and a little girl from the falling ferris wheel previously damaged in the fight. [23]

Gar grieved Donna alone in his room and was found by Dick. When the Titans gathered to toast in memory of Donna by drinking her favorite orange soda, Gar agrees with Kory that drink isn't bad before admitting he was actually just being nice. He gets up and noticed a ping from the Titan's laptop informing them of a disturbance in the Mission District, and the Titans subsequently head out.[23]

Some time after Cadmus's defeat, Gar and the Titans continued to fight crime. Gar and the team confronted Gizmo and a team of thieves, who planned to steal technology, but working together, Gar and the Titans easily defeated Gizmo and his henchmen. Afterwards, Gar was disappointed to find out that the police officer asking for Conner's autograph did not want his too, with the man claiming "nothing tops a super". Gar and Conner were comforted by Kory following the news of Jason's death and advised by her to never stop growing as people, as that was what led to Jason's downfall.[24] He and Conner were also excited to find themselves at Wayne Manor and the Batcave, and teased one another over it.

When Hank was trapped with a bomb in his chest, Gar kept him company and was devastated when Hank died. He attempted to comfort Conner in the wake of Hank's death, which led to an argument between the two of them. In order to keep himself occupied, Gar had cooked a pizza for the Titans and was about to serve some when Koriand'r, in a trance state, attacked him. Despite running from her, the attacks continued until Gar found himself locked in the trunk of Koriand'r's car after her visions brought her to the location where her sister, Komand'r was being held captive. Gar assisted Koriand'r in freeing Komand'r and once they had returned to the Wayne mansion, Gar laughed at Komand'r's assumption that Gar serviced Koriand'r sexually and corrected Conner when he misunderstood Komand'r's meaning of 'tending to [her] needs'.[2]

Gar advocated for rehabilitating Jason, despite the fact he had killed Hank, as the Titans hunt against the Red Hood and the Scarecrow continued. He argued with his team that they should give Jason another chance, citing his own killing spree against civilians caused by CADMUS and Mercy Grave's brainwashing as evidence to why they should. In his determination to help Jason, Gar searched his room, and eventually sought out Jason's childhood friend Molly Jensen in order to reach the Red Hood.[25]

After Dick was killed by a mob in Gotham, Gar screamed and inadvertently summoned a swarm of bats to him. As they flew around him, Gar began to transform into a bat himself, and was able to control the bats to carry Dick with him to the Lazarus Pit where he could be resurrected. While waiting for Dick to surface from the pit, Gar confided in Rachel that he was scared of what he was capable of and felt there was a psychological block preventing him from accessing his full capabilities. Rachel aided him with her own empathic powers, explaining that her drive to defeat her father came from her love for her team, her family, and reminded him that he had everything he needed; that the bats answered him because they knew he loved Dick, that he needed to help him and he didn't need to be afraid of his powers.[26]

Visiting The Red

Gar in the Red

Gar in The Red.

Upon arrival at S.T.A.R. Labs, Gar was brought to the facility's Morphology lab by Bernard Fitzmartin whom had created a suit for him enclosed within a cuff that would negate the need for Gar to strip off before every transformation. When he attempted to activate the suit for the first time however, Gar's eyes turned red and his consciousness was transported to a barren landscape of red; with only a large dead tree with offerings of animal bones hanging from its branches and a large red moon in the sky. When he came back to his senses, Gar was informed by his wary friends that he had turned into a gorilla, a velociraptor and an armadillo, and destroyed the Morphology lab: all of which Gar has no recollection of doing.[27]

Since his first visit to the Red, Gar kept hearing voices and in the middle of training Tim Drake to track, he abandoned his teammate and followed voices beckoning him. The voices seemed to overwhelm him and Gar passed out. He later accompanied Tim and Dick following Rachel's vision of a house, and while there was able to recognize the screaming sound coming from the girl as Rachel helped her as the sound of dying animals; concluding that the girl's attacker was hiding out at a slaughter house. At the slaughter house, Gar briefly sensed the masked man but dismissed it.[28]

Gar told Rachel about the Red and the voices, and although her powers had been stolen was able to share his vision with her through touch. While in the Red, Gar informed Rachel that the voices were trying to tell him something; reciting a prophecy that the whole world would fall to evil when the red moon rose.[28]

Getting answers and saving Conner's life

While discussing what to do about the snake Mother Mayhem had managed to infiltrate S.T.A.R. Labs, Gar was frustrated wondering how the snake had even gotten in. He laughed at Jinx's joke about employing Samuel L Jackson to help with their snake problem, and was then paired up with her when they went in search of the snake. As they searched, Gar told Jinx that a 'tree of bones' had talked to him, and Jinx informed him it was a metaphysical place called The Red: she described it as a place of great power and mystery. When Gar begins to feel low and scared of what it all means, Jinx reassured him that what he has is a gift and encouraged him to 'go in blind and figure it out.' Their conversation was interrupted when they came across a corpse, mutilated by the snake.

After Conner was discovered to have been infected with parasitic snakes by Mother Mayhem, Gar warns Dick that they are in over their heads and expresses fears over Conner's welfare and the impending end of the world. Dick assured him that the world was not ending and they would figure things out. A short while later, Conner under Mother Mayhem's influence pretended to be frightened and then mocked the Titans by bringing up their previous failure to save Hank, and Gar knocked him out using anesthesia. Gar and Bernard formulate a plan to destroy the snakes within Conner while leaving him unharmed, in the form of Gar transforming himself into a virus. When Dick questioned it, Gar explained that his power was to 'unzip and rearrange' his own DNA to turn himself into anything so long as it had DNA. With viruses being the most primordial form of DNA Gar was able to turn into it and duplicate himself. Dick expressed concerns about the risks involved, knowing Gar would die if Conner died, as viruses could not live without a host, or could end up stuck inside Conner's body without a way out: Gar responded that Dick had taught him too well, and asked him if their positioned were switched would he hesitate?

Virus

Gar as the virus inside Conner's body.

As a virus, Gar carried Jinx's blue ash and used it to kill the snakes inside Conner's body in a graphic procedure that nearly killed them both. Conner recovered quickly, and the Titans waited anxiously for Gar to reform himself inside a large tub of an unknown pale, viscous red fluid. Eventually Gar was able to reform himself and asked how Conner was, after being told his friend was recovering fine, Gar expressed delight in how the experience of being a virus felt and embraced Bernard, to the latter's surprise, while the Titans celebrated around them.[29]

Trigon's false reality

Gar and Rachel in Trigon's false reality

Gar and Rachel in Trigon's false reality.

In a false reality created by Trigon, Gar was in college and was sharing a college dorm with Rachel. Preemptively, they both confessed they were calling for Johnny Grayson, who had a white, stuffed tiger, given to him by Gar.[30]

Personality

Gar is a friendly, caring and selfless individual shown to be extremely protective of his friends and strangers alike; willing to risk his own safety and even lay down his life for the sake of others. Gar's loyalty to his friends is not blind however, as he is comfortable disagreeing with them when his own intuition on people conflicts with their own assessments: such as when Gar was reluctant to trust Angela and Rose despite the Titans welcoming them, and argued in Jason's favor during the Red Hood fights. Whether intentional or not, Gar is often the comic relief of the show, as even in later seasons he displays a goofy side informed by his pop culture interests and sense of humor.

While outwardly a wholesome teenager with a keen interest in video games, vintage films and other things related pop culture, including superheroes, Gar has a rebellious streak. He repeatedly snuck out of the Doom Patrol's manor to steal in order to satisfy his hobbies and nerdy interests, and disobeyed Dick's instructions to stay inside the tower with Conner and later again with Jason. He also enjoys teasing others, shown when he's training Tim and deliberately makes the other boy jump in fright by sneaking up on him and roaring.

As the show progresses, events begin to negatively affect him and as such Gar's personality takes a darker turn. Although beginning as something of a pacifist averse to violence, and expressing grief following the trauma of accidentally killing a man to defend himself and then being brainwashed into killing for Cadmus, Gar has since become indifferent to causing physical harm to others. He does not shy away from extreme violence should the need call for it, even to the extent of possibly killing his opponents; as shown when he fights the Church of Blood acolytes as a gorilla. Despite caring for his friends, Gar had internalized resentments towards them- specifically Rachel- that Cadmus were able to prey upon during their brainwashing. His once endless patience for others shows a dip by the third season, as he often snaps and gets angry at the team, even going as far as to scare Dick and tell him his excuses are "bullshit" and yelling at Kory that she and the other Titans "all suck". Gar displays traits of depression, often making dry remarks about it to others, and replying that he "wouldn't know" when Rachel asks if her good mood following the loss of her empathic powers was how it always felt not to feel the weight of everyone's problems constantly.

Powers and abilities

Powers

"You... are so much more than their Beast Boy, Gar. You are the Changeling. The true protector of The Red"
Freedom Beast to Gar [src]
  • Metahuman Physiology: As a result of his sickness from the Congo and Dr. Caulder's experimental medicine, Gar Logan's biology was altered, turning his hair green and granting him the ability to transform into different lifeforms so long as they're comprised of DNA.[29]
    • Shapeshifting:
Gar in the form of a tiger

Gar in his green tiger form

Gar is able to manipulate his own DNA to form into anything, living or extinct, so long as it is comprised of DNA.[29] It is hypothesized by Dr. Niles Caulder that this is done by unzipping his DNA and rearranging it, while the form of a tiger is psychological due to his love for them.[8] Gar is capable of transforming completely, or only partially. When partially transformed his irises turn green, his scelera turn black, and occasionally his skin also turns green. He can understand humans in his animal forms and appears to understand animals as a Human. Gar obtains the abilities and functions of the animal he turns into. After feeling fear of losing his friend, Beast Boy shifted into a bat in order to summon other ones to lift Nightwing's corpse to be revived in the Lazarus Pit which suggested that his emotions help focus his power in different animal forms.[26]
      • Superhuman Strength: Gar has above average strength, and more so in select animal forms. In human form, he is shown to be able to contend with much larger opponents or opponents with super strength such as Kory, and in tiger and gorilla forms is able to throw people around with ease.
      • Superhuman Durability: Regardless of form, Gar is shown to be extremely durable. His tiger form has a dense hide and is resistant to cold temperatures. Under CADMUS' control, he leapt through a glass window without taking any damage. He also survived getting punched and thrown around by Conner, who is a clone of Superman and was also under CADMUS' control, and recover from his superhuman attacks in a relatively short period of time without injury. His snake form was able to slither across broken glass with no discomfort. In human form, he was able to remain conscious after being electrocuted several times by asylum doctors and had a higher than average tolerance for injuries sustained by Rachel's umbrakinesis and Kory's fire.
      • Superhuman Speed: Gar's tiger form is very fast. He can quickly outrun and attack his enemies. He also ran away before a security guard could shoot him.
      • Superhuman Longevity: Due to his metahuman physiology and connection to the Red, Gar has a significantly longer life span than most people.[31]
      • Superhuman Agility: Gar is shown to be superhumanly agile in both animal and human forms. He was able to silently stalk and track Tim, and was entrusted to train him in stealth. As a tiger, he can nimbly pounce on his enemies and jump long distances in a single leap, and he easily landed on his feet after being thrown into the air by Conner.
      • Enhanced Senses: Gar's tiger form has a superhumanly olfactory sense of smell. He was able to smell the scent of a letter written for Jason sent by Molly Jensen, who he managed to track where she lived to talk to her. This may also apply to his snake form.[25]
      • Accelerated Healing Factor: Gar is able to heal from injuries at an enhanced rate, even healing from severe wounds such as having his skull broken.[21]This ability may extend to self-resurrection/resuscitation, as Gar comes back to life[4] seemingly of his own power, given Rachel did not have access to her powers at this time and Trigon had ordered his death.[16]
      • Opti-Chromatic Shifting: Gar's eyes glow green whenever he activates his powers. They turn red and faintly glow when he is communicating with The Red.
      • Dermo-Chromatic Shifting: Gar's skin turns green when he fully activates his powers.
      • Fang & Claw Protrusion: Gar is able to grow claws and/or fangs in both Human and animal forms at will through total or partial transformation.
      • Flight: In his Bat form, Gar gains the ability to fly.
      • Animal Summoning: Gar is apparently capable of summoning animals to his aid, such as when he summoned a swarm of bats with a hive mind.[15]
      • Animal Communication: Gar appears to be able to communicate with animals, shown during interactions with Krypto and with the bats he summoned.[15]
      • Psychic Immunity: Possibly due to his shapeshifting, Gar was unable to be affected by Trigon’s mind control as the rest of the Titans were.[16]
      • Self-Replication: As a virus, Gar is able to self-duplicate via the process of viral replication and carry foreign properties with him in order to infect a host.[29]
  • Connection to the Red: Gar is a prophesised being known as the Changeling, foretold as the True Protector of the Red. Due to this he holds a special connection to a universal force known as the Red and has an innate understanding of it that goes far deeper than any other person who has accessed the Red. He is able to visit it at will and use it to both traverse through time and space, but also other realities, all without the use of the Beast Helm.[7][31]
    • Connection to all Life: Through the Red as the Changeling, Gar holds a unique connection to all life in the universe.
    • Red Manipulation: Despite only just realizing his connection to the Red, Gar has potent control over the Red and was able to change its signature red color to green based off his own preference.
    • Precognition: Gar has latent psychic abilities that appear to stem from the Red that allow him to see or hear snippets of the near future.[32]
    • Time Travel: The Red allows its Avatars to traverse all of time through it.
    • Multiverse Travel: As well as connecting the Avatar to all life in their home universe, the Red also connects them to life in other universes as well. Gar is able to meet and converse with the deceased such as Jinx, and was able to rescue the Titans from the Death Realm after Brother Blood banished them there.
    • Illusions: Within the confines of the Red, Gar and other Avatars are able to create elaborate and vivid illusions created both from memories and from their imagination.
    • Empathy: Using the Red, Gar is able to sense near-by life forms and sense their feelings, such as the suffering of tortured apes.[31]
    • Other Unspecified Powers: Dominic states that Gar has an astounding influence over the Red and is capable of things none of his predecessors were. What these abilities are is unknown.

Known forms

Abilities

"Yeah, I do. I have a pretty good instinct about this kind of thing."
—Gar Logan to Rachel Roth about his intuition on people.[src]
  • Bilingual: Gar speaks at least two languages, English and French.[8][34]
  • Expert Martial Artist: Gar is a skilled mixed martial artist after having been trained with Dick Grayson since his introduction into the Titans. Gar's reflexes and agility allowed him to quickly evade several attacks by Jason Todd during his training[4], against Cadmus soldiers and many other combatants even when outnumbered.[24] He was also able to subdue Starfire[2] and defend himself from several police officers.[35] His help was even requested by Conner against the zombie hoards summoned by Mother Mayhem[36]. His combat skills seem to compromise with Boxing, Kickboxing, Karate, and Tricking.
    • Skilled Swordsman: Gar demonstrated great skill with a wooden sword that he used to train with Jason Todd[4] and was shown training with real swords at Dick Grayson's request in order to help him identify events in a section of audio.[6]
  • Physician: Having assisted Dr. Niles Caulder for years, Gar gained some level of medical knowledge, being able to assist him in Shyleen Lao's operation[8], remove intubation from Kory[13] and sedate Conner[29]
  • Intimidation:: Gar has been shown several times scaring others, either in animal forms or while partially transformed. This includes his own allies, often scaring Dick both as a joke and intentionally, Tim and Bernard.
  • Stealth: In both animal and Human forms, Gar is skilled in stealth and was entrusted by Dick to train Tim.[28]
  • Intuition: Gar has a keen sense when it comes to people and whether or not they are a threat. Shown when he was certain Rachel was inherently good despite her demonic powers and vouched for Jason during the Red Hood fights, yet distrusted Angela and Rose.[8][14] Whether this is an ability or a super power is unknown.
  • Cooking: Gar has been shown making a pizza from scratch, as well as having had prepared food for Krypto that was nice enough and of a high enough quality that Hank mistook it for Human food.[26][37]

Weaknesses

  • Power Instability: While now able to shift into many different animals having overcome previous psychological and emotional barriers preventing him from doing so, Gar currently suffers with occasional bouts of amnesia with shifting. In Lex Luthor, Gar attempted to use his suit for the first time, but; instead had his consciousness sent to the Red while his body transformed into a series of different animals and attacked the morphology lab at S.T.A.R. Labs. Once he returned to his human form, Gar had no recollection of these attacks.
  • Visions: In season four, Gar experiences debilitating visions and audio "hallucinations"; as a result of the Red attempting to communicate with him. He has had these since he was a child.[31]
  • Music Trigger: As a result of CADMUS' experimentation on him in season two, Gar's tiger form can be triggered by listening to certain classical music. It is currently unknown if this has been cured or not. [21]

Former Weaknesses

  • Power Instability: From seasons one to three, Gar struggled to transform into animals other than a tiger; unless in times of fear. After he changed back from that animal, it was locked away and he couldn't seem to transform into it again. He needed to overcome a psychological and emotional barrier that; was hindering the full potential of his powers and in the finale of season three he achieved this.[26]

Equipment

  • Beast Boy Suit: Created by Bernard Fitzmartin in the Morphology lab at S.T.A.R. Labs, Gar wears the suit at all times stored in a gauntlet on one hand. The suit is activated by pressing a button on the back of the hand and envelops his whole body.

Behind the scenes

  • In the DC comics, Beast Boy, is a regular member of both the Doom Patrol and the Teen Titans. His first appearance in the comics was DC Comics Presents #99 (November, 1965). This version of Gar is the adopted son of Rita Farr AKA Elasti-Girl and Steve Dayton aka Mento.
  • In the DC comics, Gar Logan gained his powers from a machine his father, Mark Logan used on him to save his life from Sakutia, a deadly disease that; he contracted from a green monkey. He did so by devolving his son into a green monkey. The process saved Gar's life, but permanently turned his skin and hair green, and gave him the ability to morph into any animal, including those that were extinct. This was later revealed to be a connection forged with The Red, one of the natural forces of the universe such as The Green that gives Swamp Thing his powers.
  • In September 2017, producers released an open casting call for Gar under the false character name "Jax".[38]
  • He is among three main characters who do not share their name with an episode. The others are Rachel and Tim.
  • The jacket that Gar wears resembles his costume from the comics, and the suit made by Bernard Fitzmartin in season 4 is styled after this.
    • Potter was given the choice of whether he wanted the classic white and red suit, or the black and purple suit from the Teen Titans 2003 cartoon; he opted for white and red.[39]
  • This version does not have green skin permanently and only turns when he starts transforming. Only his hair remains permanently green.
  • Showrunner Greg Walker revealed during an AMA that he considers Gar and Rachel to be siblings.
  • In October 2018, during an interview with International Business Times, Ryan Potter stated Gar is 15 years old at the beginning of the series.
  • During a Twitter post Ryan Potter implied that Gar is bisexual, however no official statement from showrunner or writers have followed nor has show content indicated this as of yet, and the actor later joked with fans that he may get into trouble for the claim.
