Kama Barai Geri (鎌払い蹴り Kama Barai Geri?, "Sickle Sweeping Kick")
Nata Otoshi Geri (鉈落とし蹴り Nata Otoshi Geri?, "Hatchet Dropping Kick")
Oosoto Mawashi Geri (大外回し蹴り Ōsoto Mawashi Geri?, "Big Outer Roundhouse Kick")

These three attacks collectively referred to as Roundhouse Kick, or Special Kick, are three of Ken's special attacks, introduced in Super Street Fighter II Turbo which were originally derived from Ken's prior HK animations in the original Street Fighter II (which in turn via the said Super Street Fighter II Turbo game, Ken gained new HK animations in their place). They are also used by Violent Ken in SNK vs. Capcom: SVC Chaos and by Cyborg in Street Fighter II: The Interactive Movie.

Description[]

Executed by performing a quarter-circle forward motion and pressing kick, Ken performs three different varieties of roundhouses/heavy kicks, depending on which kick button is pressed. Designed to inflict a lot of damage through the momentum of the kick, these kicks can be used to change up traditional attack routines and surprise opponents with unique two-hit combo kicks.

Nata Otoshi Geri is an outward-back-swatting kick, Kama Barai Geri is a turning inward high-sweep kick, while Oosoto Mawashi Geri is an outward back-turning kick that is the same as Ryu's far standing HK attack (which often knocks down with a single hit compared to the other two kicks). In the case of the Kama Barai Geri, it is often used as Ken's close standing medium or heavy kick attack in many cases, depending on the game.

In addition, the attack can be altered by holding the kick button in the middle of the attack. This way, he performs the Inazuma Kick (and thus also counts as a special move via also inflicting chip damage) which gives him a notable mixup game with these said kicks. In Street Fighter III, Ken can even perform an Inazuma Kick off of his standing medium kick (since it technically is his Kama Barai Geri animation).

A majority of these said kicks are combined in succession during Ken's Shippu Jinraikyaku Super Combo. By that proxy for OMEGA Mode in later versions of Street Fighter IV, the Kama Barai Geri becomes its own special attack which can also lead into both a Nata Otoshi Geri and Shippu Jinraikyaku variation on its own.

Eventually, Violent Ken in Ultra Street Fighter II re-uses these kicks in the exact same fashion prior to Super Street Fighter II Turbo as normal standing kick attacks to differentiate himself from normal Ken.

Ken's Roundhouse Kicks would eventually return as full special moves in the form of Jinrai Kick, which uses some of the same animations as follow ups from the initial kick.

Trivia[]

  • This should not be confused with the "Hard Kick", or HK, option available to every character. In Japan the naming of the attack is "Roundhouse", which was how the HK button was originally labeled on the arcade control panel overlay.
