In Cold Comfort the player aids a Deferi ship after a Breen attack and learns from a captured H'ren, that the Breen intend to find the Preserver Archive.
Synopsis[]
In the Raveh System the player finds a disabled Deferi ship asking for medical assistance. The ship had been attacked by the Fifth Order of the Breen Confederacy, but the crew managed to repel the invaders and even capture some of the aggressors. The captain beams over to a medical trauma center.
In the medical bay, Dr. Cossa is treating the injured Deferi. According to him the Breen were intent on hurting civilians, there are many wounded.
The player begins to treat a patient at table 7 for a disruptor wound. She has been hit by a Breen rifle on her left and is suffering pain. Since she is allergic to metorapan, the standard treatment for this condition, the player has to give her the less modern bicaridine for the pain before treating the wound with a protoplaser.
Dr. Cossa is assigning the player to another Deferi at table 3, suffering from disorientation. He is reliving memories and cannot answer any questions. An hyperencephalogram from a neural scanner reveals a cortical implant in his brain causing increased neural activity. An injection of anetrizine reduces the effects of the implant, so that the patient can regain consciousness.
Since the implant cannot be removed without risking the patient's life, Dr. Cossa asks the player to interrogate some Breen in the ship's holding facility. There only one of the three prisoners is willing to talk. The highest ranking Breen prisoner is gloating that Thot Trel will conquer the Alpha Quadrant. Another prisoner refuses to talk at all. Finally, a H'ren called Tran is willing to discuss the attack, but does not want his superior to listen. After the player activates an acoustic dampening field, he reveals that the Breen were attacking the ship to retrieve information. Tran does not agree with his superiors' decision to attack civilian targets and regrets his actions involving fitting the subspace implants. Thus he is willing to share the information necessary to remove them. The player learns the Breen were probing random civilians for childhood memories. Tran does not know why.
With the additional information, Dr. Cossa will be able to remove the implant. From the patient he has learned, that the Breen wanted to retrieve childhood rhymes and songs. Obviously, the Breen are after the Preserver Archive, a legendary hidden place, where the Preservers stored their technology and records.
Before the player leaves, Tran wants to talk to him again. Tran reveals that there are more Breen like him willing to stop the bloodshed. Therefore he asks for asylum from the player's faction for him and others willing to defect. The player's ship is sending a transmission to coordinates provided by Tran, offering the other Breen to join the player's faction.

Notes[]
- The mission goal incorrectly states that the Raveh System is in the "Defera Sector", which itself is incorrectly named. It is actually in the Raveh Sector.
- After completing this mission Federation players can contact Jiro Sugihara while still inside the Orellius Sector Block to acquire & complete “The Breen Connection”.
- The ship you help in this mission is not given any name. Also the classification is vague. Ambassador Surah calls it a Deferi Transport, the mission description a Freighter, the ground map Deferi Ship and your Science Officer a Deferi Frigate. In fact it is larger than a frigate, but smaller than a transport. It appears to be the same class of ship as the Jeska, but with only the hull strength of the smaller frigate.
- Bicaridine and Anetrizine should be used for the two patients, respectively.
- The mission is a non-combat mission.
