L. Neil Smith (full name Lester Neil Smith III) was a prolific science-fiction writer, most of whose books take place in the alternate reality of the North American Confederacy. In the Star Wars universe, he has written Lando Calrissian and the Mindharp of Sharu, Lando Calrissian and the Flamewind of Oseon, and Lando Calrissian and the Starcave of ThonBoka. They would later be reprinted in an omnibus edition, The Lando Calrissian Adventures. Smith is a prominent Libertarian and political activist; his novels Pallas, The Forge of the Elders, and The Probability Broach each won the Libertarian Futurist Society's annual Prometheus Award for best libertarian science fiction novel. Smith passed away on August 27, 2021 in Fort Collins at age 75.
