From Proto-Celtic *mendo- (kid, suckling), which could ultimately be from the same root as mwyn (mild, tender),[1] though Stokes prefers a comparison to Антички Грчки μαζός (mazós, breast), Old High German manzon, Албански mεnt (suck).

Cognate with Cornish mynn, Ирски meonnán, Scottish Gaelic meann and Manx mannan.
