Splatoon 3 (スプラトゥーン 3 Supuratūn 3?) is a third-person shooter developed and published by Nintendo and launched on the 9th of September 2022. It is the sequel to 2017's Splatoon 2, and like its predecessor, was released exclusively for the Nintendo Switch.
The game also has a demo that was released on August 25th, 2022. The demo was playable on August 27th, 2022, from 9:00 AM Pacific Time (12:00 PM Eastern) until 9:00 PM Pacific Time (12:00 AM, August 28th Eastern)
History[]
Splatoon 3 is developed and published by Nintendo. The game was first announced in a Nintendo Direct on February 17th, 2021, with a planned release in 2022.
Plot[]
Splatoon 3 takes place five years after the events of Splatoon 2, in a city named Splatsville (also known as the "city of chaos"), stationed within a region called the Splatlands. It is located far away from Inkopolis (the main setting of the first two games in the Splatoon series). With the development of Splatsville increased rapidly, one and a half years after the events of the Splatocalypse, more Inklings and Octolings started to move to the city.
Gameplay[]
Players will have access to new movement techniques to dodge and expand the possibilities of attacks. A "squid roll" allows them to leap and twirl out of their ink, and a "squid surge" allows them to quickly swim up ink-covered walls and jump out at the top.
A new type of Spawn Point is used during online battles: an espresso maker-like cube called a Spawner Drone. It floats above the stage, allowing players to aim at their desired deployment location. After choosing where to deploy, the spawn point launches players to that location in their swim form. Regular spawn points can still be seen on Scorch Gorge but concealed in a tarp and not confirmed to be usable.
Splatoon 3 also has Amiibo, like in Splatoon and Splatoon 2.
Announcement Trailer Details[]
The game seems to have taken a twist as the terrain is now a dry desert. The trailer kicks off with the presumed player looking at an Inkling with a hood, goggles and dust mask over their face.
You then choose your species, Inkling or Octoling. You are no longer gender locked, instead you have "styles". It seems that Octolings are now normalized as you have a choice between both of them with no additional cost. Your character then removes their dust mask as you choose their skin tone. After that, the Inkling/Octoling removes their goggles, and you get to pick their eye color. The choices you see seem to have quite a variety, as some of the options are multicolored or even tricolored. We don't get to see many of these, however, as the player in the trailer immediately goes to the simple yellow toned eyes with a bit of red around. They then remove their hood, and you can choose from several different hairstyles. Then the Inkling stands up and you can pick from several different legwear options. As you finish customizing your character, it then switches to the Smallfry next to them. The only customization option for the "little buddy", is simply the hairstyle.
After you have completed customizing to your heart's extent, the Inkling/Octoling gets up and heads to a train that leads to the new hub, Splatsville.
New Content[]
Splatoon 3 will introduce some new main weapons, such as a bow named the Tri-Stringer and a window wiper weapon named Splatana Wiper, which are variants of the new weapon classes: Stringers and Splatanas.
There are also new special weapons: the Zipcaster, the Big Bubbler, the Crab Tank, the Killer Wail 5.1, the Reefslider, the Tacticooler, the Trizooka and the Wave Breaker.
Replacing respawn machines, there is now an espresso machine-inspired floating cube that your player stands on called a Spawner Drone.
A Smallfry was shown in the trailer named "Little Buddy", functioning as a companion of some sort. However, as seen in the trailers, it will not accompany you in online battle modes.
Modes[]
Splat Zones[]
Two teams fight to keep control of specially marked zones on the map by covering them with their ink. When all Zones are under a team's control, the team's timer counts down toward zero. The timer will stop if the opposing team takes control of the Zones, and their timer will begin to count down. Both teams start at 100 on their counters. The team whose timer gets to zero wins the match. After 5 minutes, if neither team gets their timer to zero, the team who got their timer the lowest wins.
Tower Control[]
Players compete for control of a central Tower platform, which will move through the stage towards enemy territory along a path when a player stands on it. If the Tower is overtaken by an opponent, it will reverse direction. There are some spots on the map where the tower will stand still. The player on the tower must stay on it until the countdown is over to pass the control. If the team doesn't complete the control, after some seconds the countdown will recover, and it will need to be completed again. Whichever team rides the tower to their respective goal spot at the end of the path wins.
Rainmaker[]
Players compete for control of the Rainmaker, a unique weapon used only in this mode. The goal is to take it into the enemy base and place it on a pedestal, ending with a knockout if either team does so. The Rainmaker is very heavy, preventing the user from performing a Super Jump, but can fire ink tornadoes similar to those of the Trizooka.
Clam Blitz[]
The objective of Clam Blitz is to pick up clams, which are scattered around the stage, and deposit them into the shielded goal near the opposing team's base. Players picking up clams may choose to build the Power Clam needed to break open the opponent's goal or toss the clams to teammates so that they can build the Power Clam; completed Power Clams can also be tossed between teammates, as carrying them introduces a risk to the carrier by showing the location of the carrier to all opponents.
X Battle[]
X Battle is a mode for high rank players. It was first announced during the Splatoon 3 Direct and was slated to be released sometime after the game's launch. In the Chill Season trailer released by Nintendo on November 14, 2022, X Battle and X Rank were slated to be released sometime during Chill Season (12/1/22 - 3/1/23). On December 1, 2022, X Battles and X Ranks were released alongside the Chill Season and 2.0.0 update.
Salmon Run Next Wave[]
In the February 9th, 2022, Splatoon 3 Nintendo Direct, Salmon Run has been confirmed for Splatoon 3 as Salmon Run: Next Wave. There are new bosses, stages, and mechanics, such as Egg Cannons, King Salmonids, and Big Runs. The Direct also revealed that the mode can be played at any time, rather than being available on a set schedule.
Table Turf Battle[]
A turn-based competitive card minigame that includes over 150 cards. Each player is given a starter deck that can be built upon with found card packs. It can be found at the Table Turf Battle Dojo in Splatsville.
Return of the Mammalians[]

Big Run is a limited-time event in Splatoon 3 where the Salmon Run game mode is played on the Stages used for Turf War and Anarchy Battle. Every few months or so, Salmonids will invade Splatsville, giving players a chance to play Salmon Run on the normal battle stages.

Bonerattle Arena | Bonerattle Arena is the final map for Salmon Run, a place of exile that’s been modified into an arena, Salmonids battle day and night here to see who’s strongest and are equally eager to fight anyone after their eggs. | Fresh Season 2024 |
Big Run[]
Big Run is an occasional event during Salmon Run Next Wave, in which the Salmonids invade the Splatlands or Inkopolis. Different multiplayer stages get selected to be invaded by the Salmonids, which causes the layout to change during the event, and for water to flood the stage.
Name | Image | Description | First Appearance |
---|---|---|---|
Wahoo World | There are also ten Gushers that Salmonids come out of across the stage. Multiple inkable boxes with a Grizzco logo pattern were added to the stage and allow for added vertical mobility.
The Mudmouth Eruptions, Goldie Seeking, Cohock Charge, and Giant Tornado occurrences can't occur during Big Run. |
"Chill Season 2022" | |
Inkblot Art Academy | Five Gushers are placed throughout the stage to allow Salmonids to spawn during normal and low tides; at normal tide, only one is active, while four are active at low tide.
As usual for Big Run, Mudmouth Eruptions, Goldie Seeking, Cohock Charge, and Giant Tornado are unavailable; unusually, The Griller can occur during low tide. |
"Fresh Season 2023" | |
Undertow Spillway | Its layout adds many inkable blocks, plus ten Gushers which the Salmonids use to enter the stage. Six Gushers are active at low tide, three at medium tide, and two at high tide.
For this Big Run only, the Egg Basket's hitbox is expanded downward due to its placement on raised platforms across all tides. The only Known Occurrences that can occur on this stage are Fog, The Mothership, and Rush. |
"Sizzle Season 2023" | |
Um'ami Ruins | Its layout adds gushers which the Salmonids use to enter the stage. Just like Undertow Spillway, the Egg Basket's hitbox is extended downward due to its position on raised platforms during normal and low tides. All Known Occurrences that happen during Big Runs can occur. | "Drizzle Season 2023" | |
Barnacle & Dime | Its layout adds gushers which the Salmonids use to enter the stage. The Egg Basket's hitbox is extended downward due to its placement on a tall platform during low tide. All Known Occurrences that can take place during Big Runs may occur. | "Chill Season 2023" | |
Eeltail Alley | The water level does not change between tides due to it being positioned far below the stage normally, meaning Salmonids can only enter the stage through Gushers. The bridge in the center of the stage is "broken" like in certain Anarchy Battle layouts, with grate platforms replacing parts that are solid ground in the original layout. | "Fresh Season 2024" | |
BIG Big Run | Is a special event were all previous Big Run stages are taken over by Salmonids at the same time with the three King Salmonids: Cohozuna, Horrorboros and Megalodontia being fought at the same time as The Triumvirate. During extra wave the player will receive two special weapons. | "Sizzle Season 2024" |

Special Weapons[]
- Trizooka: A modified version of the Inkzooka from Splatoon, it has a powerful shot that fires three big globs of ink that travel in an arc before hitting the ground, instead of an ink tornado and can be fired three times in total each use.
- Zipcaster: With tentacles that stretch way out and stick to walls, you can zip around and cause mad chaos. To conceal your identity, when the ink runs out, you'll be returned to where you first transformed.
- Tenta Missiles: The Tenta Missiles allow users to lock on to opponents before firing ten to twenty missiles between the locked-on targets.
- Ink Storm: The Ink Storm creates a rain cloud of ink. The rain cloud gradually drifts above the map, inking the ground and damaging any enemies beneath it. This special can be activated and then held indefinitely if it is not thrown.
- Booyah Bomb: The user holds up a glowing ball of ink that charges up over time and can be thrown once fully charged to make an ink explosion, which is made larger by charging up more. The user and their teammates can use the "Booyah!" signal to charge up faster.
- Ink Vac: It's equipped with a massive nozzle which inhales the ink from opponents' attacks and then launches it back with a counterattack. The more attacks it inhales, the more powerful it becomes.
- Killer Wail 5.1: A modified version of the Killer Wail from Splatoon. The six floating megaphones fire wall-piercing beams, similar to the Sting Ray and the original Killer Wail. The speakers do not fire at the same time and tend to target slowly towards the user's opponents on their own.
- Inkjet: Gives its user the ability to hover in the air and shoot powerful blaster-like projectiles. Once it expires, the user automatically Super Jumps back to where they first activated it.
- Ultra Stamp: The Ultra Stamp is a large hammer which can be slammed repeatedly while advancing forwards and also has a jump attack. The weapon can also be thrown as a long-range attack, ending the special early.
- Crab Tank: When piloting this multi-legged vehicle, it has two firing modes, one shoots a ball of ink that explodes on contact, similar to the Explosher, and a second mode that shoots bullets similar to Shooters or Splatlings. It curls up into a ball to move faster and climb up walls, inking the surface as it moves, similar to the Baller.
- Splashdown: The Splashdown causes its user to jump up and strike the ground with heavy force, causing an ink explosion around them. Its effectiveness increases when activated from great heights, including while Super Jumping. It's currently only available in the story mode.
- Kraken Royale: A modified version of the Kraken from Splatoon, it has received a new charge attack to which its one-hit splat properties have been transferred; it otherwise requires two hits to splat enemies.
- Super Chump: Launch decoys that explode in a shower of ink after a set time or when attacked by enemies similar to Marina's Hyperbomb Prototypes from Splatoon 2'.
- Triple Splashdown: A modified version of the Splashdown from Splatoon 2, it generates two massive fists made of ink and allows the player to jump and splash down alongside them.
- Splattercolor Screen: A massive wall that anyone can walk through the wall, but enemies that do will lose the ability to see color due to the ocular monochromatic enhancement and will take damage. However, for the deploying team, the screen is not a shield and will not stop incoming ink!

Trivia[]
- The two mascot colors of Splatoon 3 are yellow and indigo, while grey also serves as a main theme color. Turquoise also seems to be the third mascot color.
- The theme of Splatoon 3, chaos, was decided based on the results of Chaos VS. Order Splatfest from Splatoon 2.[2]
- The main theme song for the game is Clickbait, composed by the in-game band C-Side.
- In the Splatoon 3 Hero Mode trailer, there is what seems to be a hidden image of Flounder Heights, which confirmed its return.
- Splatoon 3 Won Best Multiplayer at the 2022 Game Awards, beating Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, Overwatch 2, and MultiVersus.
- As a reference to the game being the third in the series, the number three is a recurring theme in the game, similarly to eight being a theme in the Octo Expansion. For example:
- The protagonist of Return of the Mammalians is named Agent 3.
- The most prominent bands in the game, C-Side and Deep Cut, each have three members.
- One of C-Side's songs is named Triple Dip.
- Splatfests feature three teams, Tricolor Turf Wars, and 333x battles.
- Several weapons introduced in the game are named after and associated with the number three, namely the Tri-Stringer (which fires three shots at once), the Trizooka (which can fire three times, each shot consisting of three blasts), and the Triple Inkstrike (which has three uses before expiring). Additionally, the Wave Breaker fires three shockwaves before it vanishes.
- Multiple new gear items are named to fit this theme, such as the Tri-Shred Tee.
- The model of the Octobot King used by DJ Octavio in Return of the Mammalians is called the Octobot King L3.Gs.
- Mr. Grizz's original name, as revealed in the Alterna Logs, was "Bear #03", and he is given the title of "The Ursine Anomaly #03" in Return of the Mammalians.
- The time limit in the final boss battle of Return of the Mammalians is 3:33, and the final mission of the mode, After Alterna, has an entry fee of 333 Power Eggs and first-time clear reward of 3333 Power Eggs.
- Three pieces of treasure are collected in Return of the Mammalians.
- In Tableturf Battle, CPU opponents each have three difficulty ranks, and must be defeated in a rank three times to unlock the next rank. Additionally, non-jellyfish CPU opponents reward sleeves after being defeated 30 times on the third difficulty rank.
- In Salmon Run Next Wave, the maximum hazard level is 333%.
- Octolings draw a "3" in the air when trying a brush at Ammo Knights.
