Penguinator[1] (ペンギネーター[2],Penginētā?), later known in Japan as Pen Pen (ペンペン[3][4],Pen Pen?), is an enemy that appears in the Sonic the Hedgehog series. It is a mass-produced, penguin-based Badnik created by Dr. Eggman that attacks via sliding towards its target.
Based on penguins, the Penguinators have a black body covered in blue armor with long arm plates and a pair of black eyes with a yellow beak between them. Their silver bellies have an orange line across their lower section, and they have thin, orange feet.
In Sonic Lost World, the Penguinators' design remained mostly the same, the only difference being their eyes which had been colored cyan.
In gameplay, they slowly waddle back and forth. When the player gets close though, the Penguinators will charge towards the playable character by belly sliding to attack. The player can easily dodge this attack, but the Penguinators will only turn around and repeat their attack. Regardless, the Penguinators can be defeated easily with a Spin Jump or Spin Attack. Also, upon their destruction, they will release an Amimal.
Sonic Rivals 2[]
In Sonic Rivals 2, the Penguinator appears as a collectible card that the player receives after getting the high score in Sunset Forest Zone Act 3. It also unlocks the same Zone's Chao Detector.
In the Wii U/PC version, Penguinators appear either alone or in groups in Frozen FactoryZone 4 and Silent Forest Zone 3. Overall, they use their attack patterns from Sonic the Hedgehog 3. In the 2.5D sections of the Zones, they waddle back and forth, but will attempt to slide into the player when approached. However, some Penguinators will keep repeating their attacks, even when the playable character is not close by. In the 3D pipe sections, the Penguinators initially stand still, but will start belly sliding towards the playable character once they are approached.
In the Nintendo 3DS version of the game, Penguinators appear in Frozen Factory. In the 3D sections, they generally appear as stationary obstacles during the Snowboarding sections or will charge towards Sonic when he is approaching. In the 2.5D sections, they use the same attack pattern from the Wii U/PC version.
In the Wii U/PC version, the Penguinators appear either alone or in groups in Frozen Factory Zone 4 and Silent Forest Zone 3, while they appear primarily throughout Frozen Factory in the Nintendo 3DS version. Also, when a Penguinator is destroyed in any of the versions of Sonic Lost World, it will release an Animal.
Personality[]
While built to serve as work drones, Penguinators possess a degree of sentience and personality traits. These traits include fawning over Dr. Eggman and trying to give him a great birthday on their own volition.[5]
Powers and abilities[]
Penguinators attack by charging towards their targets with belly sliding, as their regular speed is too slow.
In the Sonic the Comic series and its spin-offs published by Fleetway Editions, the Penguinators are a part of Dr. Robotnik's Badnik army and are among the first generations of Badniks the doctor produced.
In the Sonic Adventures story books, Robotnik sent numerous Badniks (including Penguinators) on a huge chase after Sonic and Tails when they escaped from his spaceship. One Penguinator also acted as Robotnik's right-hand assistant throughout the storyline.
In the Sonic the Hedgehog comic series and its spin-offs published by IDW Publishing, a Penguinator, along with many other Badniks worked together to give Dr. Eggman a nice birthday by trying to destroy Sonic for him. However, they were ordered to return to base by Eggman before they could commence their attack.[5]
Trivia[]
In LEGO Dimensions, Penguinators appear in the Ice Cap Zone portion of the Sonic the Hedgehog World. They remain stationary when approached and make no attempt to attack, even when provoked.
