Desert Dazzle is a scrapped Round that was set to appear in 2011 remaster of Sonic the Hedgehog CD.

Description[]

Desert Dazzle is a large desert-like area with a multitude of cacti and cow skulls, though the latter are only featured on the sides of cliffs. The salt flats in the background are a bright, sandy yellow, contrasting nicely with the darker oranges and browns that make up the cliffs in the foreground.

Development[]

Desert Dazzle was coined by the head developer for the 2011 remaster of Sonic the Hedgehog CD, Christian Whitehead, who posted the information about the Round. According to Whitehead, the Round was cut so that the game didn't stray too far from its original Sega CD port. However, an image of it is still featured in-game.[1]

It was revealed that the Sonic the Hedgehog CD levels were sorted in a folder and went through R1 (Palmtree Panic) to R8 (Metallic Madness). However, R2 was scrapped and R1 went straight to R3. Desert Dazzle was confirmed to be the replacement for R2.[2]

A level from the round itself exists in the game, but can't be accessed under normal circumstances. Only R21A exists in the game's files, meaning only the first act in the present timeline was partially completed before the round was scrapped. By modifying the game, it is possible to enter the incomplete Desert Dazzle, although it lacks objects besides the global set of items, such as rings, springs, and item boxes. As the level was not finished, if the player goes too far to the right, they will eventually wind up into a bottomless pit. The D.A. Garden theme plays in the level.

Trivia[]

  • A screenshot of this level can be accessed in the Sound Test by typing the following code: PCM:32 DA:8.
  • Desert Dazzle was based off the pre-release images of Sand Shower Zone, a cut level from Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
  • When looking at Little Planet in either the D.A. Garden or the Windows 95 version's loading screen, a desert area with a single cactus is visible. There is no other level that features this area, with the exception of Wacky Workbench's past, which shows that the factory was built in a desert-like area. Desert Dazzle would have likely fixed this disconnect.
  • Level assets intended for use in Desert Dazzle, such as the background, land tiles and objects, were incorporated into Sonic Mania's Mirage Saloon Zone.
