Decoe (デコー Dekō?) is a character that appears in the Sonic X anime series and its comic series published by Archie Comics. He is one of Dr. Eggman's personal humanoid assistant robots, whom he aids in his schemes for domination.

History[]

Anime[]

New World Saga[]

Decoe and Bocoe were with Dr. Eggman in his base when it came under attack by Sonic in his attempts to rescue Cream and Cheese and retrieve the Chaos Emeralds. However, when Sonic caused an E-13 Guardbot to damage the energy amplifier that Eggman had placed the Chaos Emeralds in, it triggered Chaos Control, sending Decoe and his cohorts to Earth.[6]

Once there, Eggman decided to launch his takeover of Earth and add it to the Eggman Empire.[7] Decoe and Bocoe stayed in the meantime by Eggman's side while at his headquarters, with Decoe offering the cards of the E-Series robots for Eggman to choose from whenever he launched one of his attacks.[8][9][10][11][12]

When Eggman sent E-51 Intelligente to brainwash the students at Station Square Elementary School, Decoe kept a close eye on him for the doctor, who got upset when Intelligente deviated from his original task after befriended the students instead of enslaving them.[10] Decoe would also alert Eggman to an ambush on E-90 Super Sweeper after Eggman sent the latter into space to steal satellites.[11] Sometime later, Decoe detected a Chaos Emerald reaction in the Diamond Stadium. Coming along with Eggman on his hunt for the Emerald this time around, Decoe and Bocoe ended up playing a baseball game alongside Eggman's E-21 Ballios against Sonic and his friends, with the winner getting to claim the Chaos Emerald. Although Decoe's team could not beat Sonic's team, Eggman still managed to escape with the Chaos Emerald.[13]

When G.U.N. launched their attack on Eggman's headquarters while Eggman was away hunting for a Chaos Emerald, Decoe and Bocoe manned the defenses of the headquarters from G.U.N.[14] When they noticed what they assumed to be another G.U.N. aircraft approaching the base, they attempted to shoot it down, unaware that it was Eggman returning in his Egg Mobile. Once Eggman got back inside, he thoroughly chewed out Decoe and Bocoe for their stupidity before taking over the defenses himself, while Decoe and Bocoe sealed a G.U.N. commando team in the power room when they discovered them, unaware the commandos had already planted explosives to take out Eggman's base. Thanks to Sonic defeating E-18 Guerra-Hard and retrieving the two Chaos Emeralds Eggman had collected, along with providing an escape route for the G.U.N. commandos, Knuckles, and Rouge, Decoe was left to be stuck inside the base when it was destroyed by the planted explosives.[12]

Chaos Emerald Saga[]

Despite Eggman losing his headquarters, he recovered by launching the Egg Fort, with Decoe and Bocoe acting as his co-pilots, allowing them to pursue Sonic and his enemies around the world. Their first act after deploying their new base was to attack Station Square with E-42 Toroles and E-43 Falcons. However, they were beaten by Sonic, who made the Egg Fort crash into the ocean.[15] Despite the Egg Fort now stuck underwater, Bocoe and Decoe attempted to repair it. In the meantime, Eggman discovered another Chaos Emerald nearby and unleashed E-57 Clurken to deal with Sonic, only for Sonic to take down E-57 and escape with the Emerald.[16]

Decoe and Bocoe later went to Oriental City where they saw Knuckles looking for someone named Hawk, which they promptly reported to Eggman, who decided to investigate this.[17] After the Egg Fort and X Tornado later shoot each other down over the African Savannah, Bocoe and Decoe went after Sonic in E-65 Gorru-Gaooh. However, their ability to camouflage E-65 through the fauna around them failed when they attempted to attack Sonic in a construction site, where the heavy construction equipment would not blend with E-65, which allowing Sonic to destroy it.[18]

Eventually, the Egg Fort was damaged beyond repair, and Eggman prepared to launch his Egg Fort II, but Decoe and Bocoe both objected to some of the various names Eggman suggested for the fort's three parts before they finally launched it to confront Sonic while he was on a vacation to the glaciers on the Thorndyke Family yacht. However, they were soundly beaten by Sonic and the Thorndyke Family's maid, Ella, who had chased Bokkun all the way back to Eggman in retribution for blowing a bomb up in her face.[19]

While hanging out in the Egg Fort II, Decoe saw Eggman get contacted by Jerome Wise, who needed the doctor to force Sonic into competing in a race. After Decoe aided in convincing Eggman to help Wise (who offered them a reward that Decoe liked), Decoe helped Eggman remodel a robot that made Sonic compete in the race. Later, while Decoe was comforting Bokkun after a traumatic experience, E-45 Sumo-Man, who Eggman had sent after Sonic, came crashing into the Egg Fort II, leaving Decoe buried in the rubble.[4] Decoe and Bocoe later joined Eggman on a hike in the mountains of Japan, only to find themselves fighting Sonic when they found his friends there, whom they suspected of looking for a Chaos Emerald. They thus launched E-66 Da-Dai-Oh to face them, only for Sonic to beat them once more.[20] The evil trio later notice a beam of light coming from Filmdom City and realized it was a Chaos Emerald. They thus had the Egg Fort II literally crash the sound stage where the Thorndyke family and Sonic and co. were. There, Decoe pursued Knuckles until Eggman attained the Chaos Emerald and unleashed E-74 Weazo to attack the Thorndykes and Sonic's friends. After Knuckles and Sonic destroyed E-74, Decoe retreated with Eggman and Bocoe, having attained their primary objective in the Chaos Emerald.[21]

Eventually, Decoe, Bocoe and Eggman began observing Sonic after catching him in doing a non-stop run. Rather than using this opportunity to attack Sonic however, Eggman kept procrastinating, much to Decoe's dismay.[22] It was not until later, when Christopher Thorndyke and Knuckles approached the Egg Fort II with a white flag that Decoe and Bocoe would listen in. As it turned out, the two heroes wanted to request a truce with Eggman in the hopes of helping Sonic, Eggman, and everyone else get back to their world. After they left, Eggman made it clear that he only agreed to the truce in order to attain the Chaos Emeralds and complete his conquest of Earth. When Chris and Knuckles returned with their Emeralds as a sign of goodwill, Eggman revealed his treachery and ejected Knuckles from the ship. While Chris was taken hostage, Eggman had Decoe and Bocoe to set a course to rendezvous with E-77 Lucky, who had found the final Chaos Emerald.[23]

During the fight with Sonic and G.U.N. that followed, Chris complained to Eggman that the Chaos Emeralds did not belong to him. Decoe was quick to order Chris silent, leading to the two of them bickering until they saw Sonic soar over them and reach Lucky. After that, Eggman ordered Decoe and Bocoe to transform the Egg Fort II into the E-99 Eggsterminator. With the power of the six Chaos Emeralds he possessed, Eggman had the Eggsterminator beat Sonic into a battered pulp. However, Decoe, Eggman and Bocoe grew frightened when the Eggsterminator began to beat Sonic mercilessly due to an overcharge from the Emeralds. Unable stomach this, Eggman ordered the Eggsterminator to stand down, but the behemoth delivered a final drop-kick that knocked Sonic into the ocean. After Chris broke free from his restraints and grabbed the Emeralds, there was little Decoe or Bocoe could do before Knuckles broke in to save Chris, only to find Rouge had escaped with him in the confusion. After Chris caused Rouge to drop the Emeralds into the ocean however, the Eggsterminator grabbed her and Chris and tried to crush them. However, when the Eggsterminator's fist holding Chris and Rouge got shattered, Decoe and Bocoe turned to Eggman for orders. However, Eggman took no action, having realized that the Chaos Emeralds were transforming Sonic into Super Sonic, and Chaos Control was about to occur. Emerging, Super Sonic reduced the Eggsterminator into a fiery wreck within seconds. However, Eggman, Decoe and Bocoe escaped the explosion, crash-landing on Angel Island.[24]

Chaos Saga[]

Six months since losing the Eggsterminator to Super Sonic, Decoe had been aiding Eggman in setting up his Final Egg base in the Mystic Ruins and building his new E-Series robots in E-101 Beta, E-102 Gamma, E-103 Delta, and E-104 Epsilon, before setting off in the Egg Carrier to unleashed Chaos on Station Square.[25] When Sonic and Tails later defeated Chaos in Windy Valley after it had become Chaos 4, Decoe and Bocoe armed the Egg Carrier's weapons to shoot down the X Tornado.[26]

Later when Beta, Gamma, Delta, and Epsilon returned with several frogs, when it is discovered that only Gamma succeeded with finding and capturing Froggy, who had swallowed part of Chaos along with a Chaos Emerald, Decoe and Bocoe had to carry out the sad duty of sending Beta, Delta, and Epsilon away. When the X Tornado attacked again, Decoe and Bocoe armed the Egg Carrier's weapons, but were unprepared for when Tails revealed the X Tornado's Battle Armor Mode and managed to crash the aircraft on the Egg Carrier.[27] After Sonic and Knuckles were able to defeat Chaos 6 and rescue Big, Froggy, and Chris, Eggman fled back to the Final Egg while Decoe and Bocoe were left on the crashing Egg Carrier.[28] They later encountered Amy Rose when she returned to the Egg Carrier to find the family of her Flicky friend, Lily, but both they and ZERO were soundly beaten by Amy and her Piko Piko Hammer.[29]

Decoe and Bocoe later picked up Eggman following his reveal to Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles that Chaos was still alive and had double-crossed him, taking him back to what was left of Final Egg to launch the Egg Carrier 2 to confront Chaos, who by this point had acquired all seven Chaos Emeralds and transformed into Perfect Chaos. When the Egg Carrier 2 reached Station Square, now flooded by Perfect Chaos, Decoe and Bocoe, on Eggman's order, opened fire on Perfect Chaos. However, the beast took out their missiles before destroying the Egg Carrier 2 with a single attack. Eggman, Decoe and Bocoe escaped on the Egg Mobile however, and later bore witness to Sonic using the Chaos Emeralds to become Super Sonic to defeat Perfect Chaos. However, during the fight, Eggman and his lackeys slip away to plan their next scheme.[30]

Shadow Saga[]

Having failed with Chaos, Decoe and Bocoe stood by Eggman when he decided to hack into the secure databases of G.U.N. to download information from them, coming across the remnants of his grandfather, Professor Gerald Robotnik, and Project Shadow, in the process. Though Decoe and Bocoe worried about Eggman trying to hack into the government's databanks as that would draw the attention of G.U.N., they nevertheless joined Eggman when he raided Prison Island to find the capsule containing the ultimate creature, Shadow the Hedgehog.[31]

With Shadow's help, Eggman was able to frame Sonic and have him arrested and incarcerated, which he would celebrate with Decoe and Bocoe. Shortly thereafter, Rouge arrived to join Eggman, and offered a Chaos Emerald as her way of pledging her allegiance.[32] With Rouge and Shadow on his side, Eggman went back to Prison Island to steal the Chaos Emeralds held there. There, Decoe and Bocoe contacted Eggman to debrief him on the upgraded security system, although Eggman was not worried about it. During the events that followed, Eggman and his crew escaped with the Emeralds while Prison Island was destroyed.[33]

Now in possession of six Chaos Emeralds, Decoe headed to Space Colony ARK with Eggman, Bocoe, Rogue and Shadow to take control of the Eclipse Cannon. With it, Eggman managed to threaten the Earth into submission.[34] When Sonic and his crew later made it onboard the Space Colony ARK to stop the Eclipse Cannon, Decoe, Eggman and Bocoe ambushed the heroes and took Amy hostage. When Sonic then tried to save Amy, Eggman would trap Sonic in a capsule set to explode and rejected him into space. With Sonic seemingly gone, Decoe, Eggman and Bocoe faced the wrath of Tails, who attacked them with the X Cyclone. Despite being armed with the Egg Mobile, the evil trio was still defeated by Tails. However, Eggman managed to snatch the seventh Chaos Emerald Tails had and headed to the cannon. There, Decoe and Bocoe helped Eggman prepare the Eclipse Cannon, although the ongoing damage dealt to it by Sonic (who had surived the explosion) and Shadow made it difficult.[35] When Eggman tried firing the Eclipse Cannon anyway, he instead triggered his grandfather's doomsday program, which send the ARK crashing towards Earth to destroy the planet as payback for the death of his granddaughter, Maria.[35][36]

With time running out, Decoe and Bocoe aided Sonic and Knuckles by taking the Master Emerald to the room onboard the ARK where the Chaos Emeralds were being stored in hopes of shutting down the Emeralds and stopping the ARK's descend. There, they found their path blocked by the Bio Lizard. Shadow soon arrived to deal with it though, allowing Decoe and Bocoe to set the Master Emerald before the Chaos Emeralds so Knuckles could render them inert. Afterwards, when the Bio Lizard fused itself to the Eclipse Cannon to complete Robotnik's revenge as the Final Lizard, Decoe and Bocoe watched with everyone else as Super Sonic and Super Shadow destroyed it and used Chaos Control to restore the ARK to a stable orbit. Afterward, Decoe and Bocoe returned to Earth in a shuttle with Eggman to plan his next scheme.[36]

Egg Moon Saga[]

For Eggman's next plan, he appeared to have turned over a new leaf and rebuilt the half of the Moon he destroyed with the Eclipse Cannon, turning it into the Egg Moon.[37] However, this was a ploy to use the Egg Moon to cause a never-ending eclipse of the Sun.[38] Using a cover story that the Egg Moon was malfunctioning and needed repairs, Eggman offered his Sunshine Balls as a temporary remedy. This gained Decoe, Eggman and Bocoe, support from the public, along with the permission to meet the President at the White House.[39] However, during a moment alone, Eggman revealed to Decoe and Bocoe that the Sunshine Balls were carrying a hidden brainwashing signal, to turn the public against Sonic and like Eggman. The plan was soon exposed however when Topaz reported the truth to the President.[38]

With Eggman's plan uncovered, Decoe watched Eggman take the President and Christina Cooper hostage, so he could take over the White House. However, the X Tornado soon crashed into the building, and in the confusion, Decoe, Eggman and Bocoe lost their hostages. Forced out of the White House, Decoe, Eggman and Bocoe had to flee when they got pursued by police, but a trap set up by Sonic, Chris, Tails, and Amy led to Eggman being knocked out, and both he and his robot lackeys getting arrested and imprisoned by the authorities.[38]

Emerl Saga[]

While in jail, Decoe, Eggman and Bocoe grew very discontent with the treatment they received. However, Eggman assured his complaining sidekicks that Bokkun was on his way to break them out. When Bokkun arrived however, he revealed that he blew it with Eggman's planned rescue attempt.[40] Moving on with Eggman's next plan, Decoe and Bocoe assisted Eggman with planting chips in the appliances made by Thorndyke Industries, causing them to turn evil and revolt. This kept Sonic and his friends busy while Bokkun busted Decoe and the others out of prison.[41]

Now free, Decoe and his cohorts set up base underneath Station Square. There, Decoe and Bocoe paid Eggman a visit after he imprisoned Mister Stewart and his former students in the base. At first, the two of them suspected Stewart of being a spy until the children dashed their theory. When Chris then tried to ask them about Eggman's next plan, the robots refused to answer them (mainly because Eggman did not tell them) before leaving to cry after being reminded of how miserable their lives were. Decoe, Eggman and Bocoe later tried attacking Stewart and the children with the Egg Spider when they tried to escape. However, a surprise assault from Sonic, Rouge and Emerl resulted in the trio's defeat. Although the trio then tried to escape in the Egg Mobile, the vehicle ended up blowing up in their faces. However, the explosion forced the heroes to retreat.[42]

Some time later, when the President sat up the Chaos Emerald Martial Arts Mash-Up tournament to lure Eggman out, Decoe and Bocoe would ditch a supply run Eggman sent them out on to take part in the competition. However, they were forced to flee during the competition when confronted by the police.[43] Eventually, the whole army would pursue them. Although the robotic duo eventually escaped the army, they got chewed out by Eggman for causing such an inconvenience. After then seeing Emerl go on a ramapage on live TV, Decoe, Eggman and Bocoe went to Station Square to observe the destruction he caused.[44]

Homebound Saga[]

Using the Egg Battleship, Decoe, Eggman and Bocoe captured the Seahawk, whose communication equipment was used by Eggman to find the location of an ancient map to Murasia. Decoe and Bocoe were subsequently dispatched to receive the map from Dr. Cadberry.[45] Using disguises, the robots got the drop on the doctor and got away with the map,[45] despite Knuckles giving chase to try and get it back.[46] With the map, Eggman pinpointed Murasia, which, as Eggman predicted, lay on top of a hotspot, which Eggman planned to use to trigger world-wide volcanic eruptions with so he could bring the world to ruin and build the Eggman Empire on top of the remains. When the evil trio arrived at the island that marked the entrance to Murasia though, they met Sonic and his crew, whom Decoe and Bocoe opened fire at until the GUN Fort V3 arrived and overpowered the Egg Battleship. While Decoe began to panic, Eggman revealed to the heroes that he held the crew of the Seahawk hostage onboard his ship to prevent further attacks. When that failed to make much of a difference, Decoe and his crew tried heading for Murasia, only to come under even heavier fire. With the Egg Battleship on its last legs, Eggman decided to use the weapon ment for setting off the volcanos against the heroes in spite of Decoe and Bocoe's attempt to dissuade him. Unfortunately, it backfired, and Decoe and his crew soon got cornered by their hostages, who had been freed by Rouge. Using a distraction however, Decoe, Eggman, Bocoe and Bokkun fled towards Musaia in the Egg Mobile.[45]

Making their way into the underground caves hosting Murasia, Decoe and Bocoe were sent on a food run by Eggman, much to their displeasure. However, they soon ended by being chased by Mothmacin. While running for their lives, Chris tried to save the robotic duo, only to end up running from Mothmacin with them. Eventually, they ended up at Eggman's camp, where Eggman took Chris hostage. The two robots then helped Eggman locate the hotspot in Murasia. As Eggman set the detonator to trigger the hotspot however, the group got attacked by Mongroun. While running for their lives, Decoe and Bocoe discovered that Eggman had left them behind. When Chris then went after Eggman's detonator to stop it, only for Mongroun to target him, Decoe and Bocoe decided to help him. However, they ended up getting smashed to pieces by Mongroun.[47] Fortunately, their remains were salvaged and put back together by Tails and Chuck.[48]

After Sonic and his crew stopped Eggman's plan from coming to fruition and began heading home, Decoe and Bocoe revealed themselves to the heroes and announced that they had had it with Eggman and that they were joining Sonic's side now.[47]

No longer wanted by the authorities, Decoe and Bocoe were only left to do volunteer work, which they used to work for the Thorndyke family.[5] While doing their shopping for them however, Chris asked them to take him to Eggman so he could ask him if he was behind the Time Suspension Phenomenon. Although the robots were against it, they ultimately decided to help Chris, and summoned Bokkun with their Bokkun Beacon formation. After Decoe and Bocoe struck a deal with Bokkun, the robot agreed to take them to Eggman. There, Chris got the truth from Eggman: that the Time Suspension Phenomenon was not his doing. As Chris then left in grief, Decoe and Bocoe was kept from following him by Eggman, who knew Chris needed to sort this out on his own.[49] Following this incident, Decoe and Bocoe returned to Eggman's side. However, they soon came under attack when their base in Mystic Ruins got assaulted by rogue G.U.N. robots. Thanks to the unexpected help from Sonic however, who provided them with protection, Decoe, Eggman and Bocoe managed to launch the Grand Egg Imperial, which was able to fend off the attack from G.U.N. Soon after, the evil trio got sent back to Sonic's world by Project Homebound.[50]

With Sonic having not returned with them, Eggman began flying about in the Grand Egg Imperial with Decoe, Bocoe and Bokkun to call him out, angering Sonic's friends, resulting in Amy and Tails attacking the Grand Egg Imperial until Eggman launched a heat-seeking missile at Tails. When he intended to self-destruct it however, Decoe warned him that they never installed the self-destruct mechanism. However, Super Sonic soon returned, destroyed the missile, then the Grand Egg Imperial, leaving Eggman, Decoe, Bocoe, and Bokkun to retreat in the Egg Mobile in disgrace. However, the group agreed that with Sonic back, they could resume their rivalry with Sonic and his friends.[51]

Metarex Saga[]

Decoe remained in Eggman's service during the war with the Metarex and their leader, Dark Oak. Eventually, Eggman allied with the Metarex for some time until he discovered their true intentions. Decoe, Eggman, Becoe and Bokkun would then ally with Sonic and his friends, just in time the final battle with Final Mova that saw the death of Dark Oak, and Cosmo, who sacrificed herself to ensure Dark Oak's destruction.

Back on Sonic's world, Decoe was with Eggman when he provided Chris with the means to return home to Earth and his family in the form of the Hurry and Go Home Version 1. After Chris departed, Eggman prepared to restart his rivalry with Sonic and his friends, which Decoe, Bocoe, and Bokkun all agreed with.

Archie Comics[]

Personality[]

Decoe does not have much in the way of personality, but is somewhat absent-minded, clumsy and stupid, often providing comic relief. He tends to constantly reflect on their constant failures and insult Dr. Eggman behind his back and is constantly irritated by Bokkun. He has a common dream with Bocoe of being able to combine into a powerful battle robot (Decoe-Bocoe Cross), but it is merely a fantasy.[47]

Powers and abilities[]

Decoe has a degree of piloting skills in various subjects, enabling him to run Eggman's various machinery.

Decoe is able to "combine" with Bocoe in various ways to give themselves other functionalities. The "Bokkun Beacon" is where Bocoe sits on top of Decoe and gives them the ability to summon Bokkun via a light signal sent from Bocoe's eyes, and the "Decoe Bocoe Bazzoka Fire" is where they physically join together to form a powerful energy cannon.[52]

Decoe also has high hand-to-hand combat skills, being able to disable Black Narcissus together with Bocoe.

Trivia[]

  • Decoe's name sterns from the Japanese word "dekoboko" (凸凹), meaning unevenness, roughness, ruggedness; it also describes something bumpy, jagged.
    • The symbol on Decoe's chest represents the kanji "凸" in the word "dekoboko".
  • In the early promo for Sonic X, Decoe had a more serious and robotic appearance, in contrast to his cartoonish look and behavior in the final version.
  • According to Eggman, Decoe can be self-destructed, although it never happened.
  • Decoe has a Bark the Polar Bear doll in the Sonic X comic series published by Archie Comics.
  • The 1991 anime Kinkyū Hasshin Saver Kids was produced by the same studio as Sonic X, Tokyo Movie Shinsha or TMS Entertainment. The show featured two robots called Omega and Epsilon, with designs nearly exact to that of Decoe and Bocoe.
    • In fact, Decoe's Japanese voice actor also voiced Epsilon.
  • It is unknown whether or not Decoe can rust. Most of the time in Sonic X, he would complain about rusting, but in "Cruise Blues" he stated he was incapable of corrosion, which could also be considered rusting.
  • In the Korean dub, he is called as "Ultung".
