We investigate connectivity properties of the SARS-CoV2 spike protein-human ACE2-receptor complex employing a protein side chain-based network method that allows us to span a range from atomic to global protein scales. We analyze network topology in terms of clusters and cliques obtained from averaging over snapshots of MD simulations (from D.E. Shaw Research). We demonstrate that SARS-CoV2 forms a more dominant, robust connection with the ACE2-receptor as compared to the less virulent SARS-CoV1. Globally, this stronger connectivity is reflected by our percolation analysis where the interface cluster for the SARS-CoV2-ACE2 complex persists when restricted to stronger and stronger bonds, as compared to the SARSCoV1- ACE2 complex. At the atomic level, interface clique structure reflects a stronger connectivity in the former complex. We pinpoint key functional residues in SARSCoV2 that play important roles in establishing this higher connectivity. Thus, our studies provide an objective method to map spatial connectivity of atomic level non-covalent interactions to global connectivity between any two amino acids in the complex. We also analyze specific snapshots of the MD simulations to highlight prominent variations in network topology that explore diverse conformational landscapes. Finally, we demonstrate that a majority of mutations that occur in the SARSCoV2 spike protein in variants of concern/interest (including the currently circulating JN.1) have been observed at the interface with the ACE2 receptor. Our analyses highlight the importance of interface interactions and provide a rationale for designing receptor-like peptides and proteins to combat immunity-escaping variants.

Inspired by recent advances in observational astrophysics and continued explorations in the field of analog gravity, we discuss the prospect of simulating models of cosmology within the context of synthetic mechanical lattice experiments. We focus on the physics of expanding Universe scenarios described by the Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metric. Specifically, quantizing scalar fluctuations in a background FLRW spacetime leads to a quadratic bosonic Hamiltonian with temporally varying pair production terms. Here we present a mapping that provides a one-to-one correspondence between these classes of cosmology models and physical mechanical oscillator systems. As proof-of-principle, we then perform experiments on an actual synthetic lattice system composed of such oscillators. We simulate two different FLRW expansion scenarios driven by inflationary dark energy- and matter-dominated Universes and discuss our experimental results.

Anyonic Fabry-Pérot and Mach-Zehnder interferometers have been proposed theoretically and implemented experimentally as tools to probe electric charges and statistics of anyons. The experimentally observed visibility of Aharonov-Bohm oscillations is maximal at a high transmission through an interferometer but simple theoretical expressions for the electric currents and noises are only available at low visibility. We consider an alternative version of a Mach-Zehnder interferometer, in which anyons tunnel between co-propagating chiral channels on the edges of quantum Hall liquids at the filling factors $n/(2n+1)$. We find simple exact solutions for any transmission. The solutions allow a straight-forward interpretation in terms of fractional charges and statistics.

We study the topological properties of hardcore bosons on a two-leg ladder consisting of two Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chains that are coupled via hopping and interaction. We chart out the phase diagram for the system and show that based on the relative hopping dimerization pattern along the legs, distinctly different topological phases and phase transitions can occur. When the dimerization along the legs are uniform, we find that the topological nature vanishes for even the slightest rung hopping. For staggered dimerization, the system exhibits a well defined topological character and a topological phase transition as a function of rung hopping. While the topological phase shows bond order character, the trivial phase shows the behavior of a rung-Mott insulator. For this case, the topological nature is found to survive even in the presence of finite inter-leg interactions. Moreover, we find that the critical point of the topological phase transition shifts to a higher or a lower rung hopping strength depending on the attractive or repulsive nature of the interaction. To highlight the marked effects of interactions, we propose a scheme involving a Thouless charge pump that provides insights for the topological phases characterized by a quantised particle transport through a periodic modulation of appropriate system parameters. In our studies, we show an interaction induced charge pumping following specific pumping protocols in the case of staggered dimerization.

We describe a scheme to exchange fermion parity between two pairs of Majorana bound states mediated by coupling with a centralized quantum dot. We specifically formulate such a scheme for Majorana bound states nucleated in the Josephson vortices formed in a four-fold crossroads junction of planar topological superconductors in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field. This platform yields several advantages to the execution of our scheme as compared to similar ideas proposed in wire geometries, including control over the positions of the MBS and hence, a tunable coupling with the quantum dot. We show that moving the MBS along the junctions through voltage pulses can facilitate parity exchange via a two-step process, with intermediate projective measurements of the quantum dot charge. Thus, we formulate a way to achieve single qubit operations for MBS in extended Josephson junctions through projective measurements of quantum dot charge. We also discuss the physical viability of our scheme with a particular focus on changes in quantum dot energy levels as a measurable indicator of the success of the scheme.

Progress in understanding quantum systems has been driven by the exploration of the geometry, topology, and dimensionality of ultracold atomic systems. The NASA Cold Atom Laboratory (CAL) aboard the International Space Station has enabled the study of ultracold atomic bubbles, a terrestrially-inaccessible topology. Proof-of-principle bubble experiments have been performed on CAL with an rf-dressing technique; an alternate technique (dual-species interaction-driven bubbles) has also been proposed. Both techniques can drive discovery in the next decade of fundamental physics research in microgravity.

We experimentally demonstrate that Majorana-like bound states (MLBSs) can occur in quasi-one-dimensional metamaterials, analogous to Majorana zero modes (MZM) in the Kitaev chain. In a mechanical spinner ladder system, we observe a topological phase transition and spectral-gap-protected edge MLBSs. We characterize the decaying and oscillatory nature of these MLBS pairs and their phase-dependent hybridization. It is shown that the hybridization can be tuned to yield the analogue of parity switching in MZMs, a key element of topological qubits. We find strong agreements with theory.

The microtubule is a cylindrical biological polymer that plays key roles in cellular structure, transport, and signalling. In this work, based on studies of electronic properties of polyacetelene and mechanical properties of microtubules themselves (see Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 248101), we explore the possibility that microtubules could act as topological insulators that are gapped to electronic excitations in the bulk but possess robust electronic bounds states at the tube ends. Through analyses of structural and electronic properties, we model the microtubule as a cylindrical stack of Su-Schrieffer-Heeger chains (originally proposed in the context of polyacetylene) describing electron hopping between the underlying dimerized tubulin lattice sites. We postulate that the microtubule is mostly uniform, dominated purely by GDP-bound dimers, and is capped by a disordered regime due to the presence of GTP-bound dimers as well. In the uniform region, we identify the electron hopping parameter regime in which the microtubule is a topological insulator. We then show the manner in which these topological features remain robust when the hopping parameters are disordered. We briefly mention possible biological implications for these microtubules to possess topologically robust electronic bound states.

Inspired by investigations of Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) produced in the Cold Atom Laboratory (CAL) aboard the International Space Station, we present a study of thermodynamic properties of shell-shaped BECs. Within the context of a spherically symmetric `bubble trap' potential, we study the evolution of the system from small filled spheres to hollow, large, thin shells via the tuning of trap parameters. We analyze the bubble trap spectrum and states, and track the distinct changes in spectra between radial and angular modes across the evolution. This separation of the excitation spectrum provides a basis for quantifying dimensional cross-over to quasi-2D physics at a given temperature. Using the spectral data, for a range of trap parameters, we compute the critical temperature for a fixed number of particles to form a BEC. For a set of initial temperatures, we also evaluate the change in temperature that would occur in adiabatic expansion from small filled sphere to large thin shell were the trap to be dynamically tuned. We show that the system cools during this expansion but that the decrease in critical temperature occurs more rapidly, thus resulting in depletion of any initial condensate. We contrast our spectral methods with standard semiclassical treatments, which we find must be used with caution in the thin-shell limit. With regards to interactions, using energetic considerations and corroborated through Bogoliubov treatments, we demonstrate that they would be less important for thin shells due to reduced density but vortex physics would become more predominant. Finally, we apply our treatments to traps that realistically model CAL experiments and borrow from the thermodynamic insights found in the idealized bubble case during adiabatic expansion.

Anyons, particles that are neither bosons nor fermions, were predicted in the 1980s, but strong experimental evidence for the existence of the simplest type on anyons has only emerged this year. Further theoretical and experimental advances promise to nail the existence of more exotic types on anyons, such as Majorana fermions, which would make topological quantum computation possible.

We present a formulation for investigating quench dynamics across quantum phase transitions in the presence of decoherence. We formulate decoherent dynamics induced by continuous quantum non-demolition measurements of the instantaneous Hamiltonian. We generalize the well-studied universal Kibble-Zurek behavior for linear temporal drive across the critical point. We identify a strong decoherence regime wherein the decoherence time is shorter than the standard correlation time, which varies as the inverse gap above the groundstate. In this regime, we find that the freeze-out time $\bar{t}\sim\tau^{{2\nu z}/({1+2\nu z})}$ for when the system falls out of equilibrium and the associated freeze-out length $\bar{\xi}\sim\tau^{\nu/({1+2\nu z})}$ show power-law scaling with respect to the quench rate $1/\tau$, where the exponents depend on the correlation length exponent $\nu$ and the dynamical exponent $z$ associated with the transition. The universal exponents differ from those of standard Kibble-Zurek scaling. We explicitly demonstrate this scaling behavior in the instance of a topological transition in a Chern insulator system. We show that the freeze-out time scale can be probed from the relaxation of the Hall conductivity. Furthermore, on introducing disorder to break translational invariance, we demonstrate how quenching results in regions of imbalanced excitation density characterized by an emergent length scale which also shows universal scaling. We perform numerical simulations to confirm our analytical predictions and corroborate the scaling arguments that we postulate as universal to a host of systems.

Shell-shaped hollow Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) exhibit behavior distinct from their filled counterparts and have recently attracted attention due to their potential realization in microgravity settings. Here we study distinct features of these hollow structures stemming from vortex physics and the presence of rotation. We focus on a vortex-antivortex pair as the simplest configuration allowed by the constraints on superfluid flow imposed by the closed-surface topology. In the two-dimensional limit of an infinitesimally thin shell BEC, we characterize the long-range attraction between the vortex-antivortex pair and find the critical rotation speed that stabilizes the pair against energetically relaxing towards self-annihilation. In the three-dimensional case, we contrast the bounds on vortex stability with those in the two-dimensional limit and the filled sphere BEC, and evaluate the critical rotation speed as a function of shell thickness. We thus demonstrate that analyzing vortex stabilization provides a nondestructive means of characterizing a hollow sphere BEC and distinguishing it from its filled counterpart.

In this perspective article, we present a multidisciplinary approach for characterizing protein structure networks. We first place our approach in its historical context and describe the manner in which it synthesizes concepts from quantum chemistry, biology of polymer conformations, matrix mathematics, and percolation theory. We then explicitly provide the method for constructing the protein structure network in terms of non-covalently interacting amino acid side chains and show how a mine of information can be obtained from the graph spectra of these networks. Employing suitable mathematical approaches, such as the use of a weighted, Laplacian matrix to generate the spectra, enables us to develop rigorous methods for network comparison and to identify crucial nodes responsible for the network integrity through a perturbation approach. Our scoring methods have several applications in structural biology that are elusive to conventional methods of analyses. Here, we discuss the instances of: (a) Protein structure comparison that include the details of side chain connectivity, (b) The contribution to node clustering as a function of bound ligand, explaining the global effect of local changes in phenomena such as allostery and (c) The identification of crucial amino acids for structural integrity, derived purely from the spectra of the graph. We demonstrate how our method enables us to obtain valuable information on key proteins involved in cellular functions and diseases such as GPCR and HIV protease, and discuss the biological implications. We then briefly describe how concepts from percolation theory further augment our analyses. In our concluding perspective for future developments, we suggest a further unifying approach to protein structure analyses and a judicious choice of questions to employ our methods for larger, more complex networks, such as metabolic and disease networks.

As part of the intense effort towards identifying platforms in which Majorana bound states can be realized and manipulated to perform qubit operations, we propose a topological Josephson junction architecture that achieves these capabilities and which can be experimentally implemented. The platform uses conventional superconducting electrodes deposited on a topological insulator film to form networks of proximity-coupled lateral Josephson junctions. Magnetic fields threading the network of junction barriers create Josephson vortices that host Majorana bound states localized in the junction where the local phase difference is an odd multiple of $\pi$, i.e. attached to the cores of the Josephson vortices. This enables us to manipulate the Majorana states by moving the Josephson vortices, achieving functionality exclusive to these systems in contrast to others, such as those composed of topological superconductor nanowires. We describe protocols for: 1) braiding localized Majorana states by exchange, 2) controlling the separation and hence the coupling of adjacent localized Majorana states to effect non-Abelian rotations via hybridization of the Majorana modes, and 3) reading out changes in the non-local parity correlations induced by such operations. These schemes make use of the application of current pulses and local magnetic field pulses to control the location of vortices, and measurements of the Josephson current-phase relation to reveal the presence of the Majorana bound states. We describe the architecture and schemes in the context of experiments currently underway.

In this article, we present a systematic study of quantum statistics and dynamics of a pair of anyons in the lowerst Landau level (LLL), of direct relevance to quasiparticle excitations in the quantum Hall bulk. We develop the formalism for such a two-dimensional setting of two charged particles subject to a transverse field, including fractional angular momentum states and the related algebra stemming from the anyonic boundary condition, coherent state descriptions of localized anyons, and bunching features associated with such anyons. We analyze the dynamic motion of the anyons in a harmonic trap, emphasizing phase factors emerging from exchange statistics. We then describe non-equilibrium dynamics upon the application of a saddle potential, elaborating on its role as a squeezing operator acting on LLL coherent states, and its action as a beam splitter for anyons. Employing these potential landscapes as building blocks, we analyze anyon dynamics in a quantum Hall bulk interferometer. We discuss parallels between the presented LLL setting and other realms, extensively in the context of quantum optics, whose formalism we heavily borrow from, and briefly in that of black hole phenomena.

Current state of the art devices for detecting and manipulating Majorana fermions commonly consist of networks of Majorana wires and tunnel junctions. We study a key ingredient of these networks - a topological Josephson junction with charging energy - and pinpoint crucial features for device implementation. The phase dependent tunneling term contains both the usual 2pi-periodic Josephson term and a 4pi-periodic Majorana tunneling term representing the coupling between Majoranas on both sides of the junction. In non-topological junctions when the charging energy is small compared to the Josephson tunneling scale the low energy physics is described by 2pi phase slips. By contrast, in a topological junction, due to the 4pi periodicity of the tunneling term it is usually expected that only 4pi phase slips are possible while 2pi phase slips are suppressed. However, we find that if the ratio between the strengths of the Majorana assisted tunneling and the Josephson tunneling is small, as is likely to be the case for many setups, 2pi phase slips occur and may even dominate the low energy physics. In this limit one can view the 4pi phase slips as a pair of 2pi phase slips with arbitrarily large separation. We provide an effective descriptions of the system in terms of 2pi and 4pi phase slips valid for all values of the tunneling ratio. Comparing the spectrum of the effective models with numerical simulations we determine the cross-over between the 4pi phase slip regime to 2pi phase slip dominated regime. We also discuss the role of the charging energy as well as the implications of our results on the dissipative phase transitions expected in such a system.

Motivated by recent developments in the field of plasmonics, we develop the theory of radiation from one-dimensional electron liquids, showing that the spectrum of thermal radiation emitted from the system exhibits signatures of non-Fermi liquid behavior. We derive a multipole expansion for the radiation based on the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid model. While the dipole radiation pattern is determined by the conductivity of the system, we demonstrate that the quadrupole radiation can reveal important features of the quantum liquid, such as the Luttinger parameter. Radiation offers a probe of the interactions of the system, including Mott physics as well as non-linear Luttinger liquid behavior. We show that these effects can be probed in current experiments on effectively one-dimensional electron liquids, such as carbon nanotubes.

Motivated by recent experimental realizations of topological edge states in Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) chains, we theoretically study a ladder system whose legs are comprised of two such chains. We show that the ladder hosts a rich phase diagram and related edge mode structure dictated by choice of inter-chain and intra-chain couplings. Namely, we exhibit three distinct physical regimes: a topological hosting localized zero energy edge modes, a topologically trivial phase having no edge mode structure, and a regime reminiscent of a weak topological insulator having unprotected edge modes resembling a "twin-SSH" construction. In the topological phase, the SSH ladder system acts as an analog of the Kitaev chain, which is known to support localized Majorana fermion end modes, with the difference that bound states of the SSH ladder having the same spatial wavefunction profiles correspond to Dirac fermion modes. Further, inhomogeneity in the couplings can have a drastic effect on the topological phase diagram of the ladder system. In particular for quasiperiodic variations of the inter-chain coupling, the phase diagram reproduces Hofstadter's butterfly pattern. We thus identify the SSH ladder system as a potential candidate for experimental observation of such fractal structure.

Static, dynamic, and topological properties of hollow systems differ from those that are fully filled as a result of the presence of a boundary associated with an inner surface. Hollow Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs) naturally occur in various ultracold atomic systems and possibly within neutron stars but have hitherto not been experimentally realized in isolation on Earth because of gravitational sag. Motivated by the expected first realization of fully closed BEC shells in the microgravity conditions of the Cold Atomic Laboratory aboard the International Space Station, we present a comprehensive study of spherically symmetric hollow BECs as well as the hollowing transition from a filled sphere BEC into a thin shell through central density depletion. We employ complementary analytic and numerical techniques in order to study equilibrium density profiles and the collective mode structures of condensate shells hosted by a range of trapping potentials. We identify concrete and robust signatures of the evolution from filled to hollow structures and the effects of the emergence of an inner boundary, inclusive of a dip in breathing-mode-type collective mode frequencies and a restructuring of surface mode structure across the transition. By extending our analysis to a two-dimensional transition of a disk to a ring, we show that the collective mode signatures are an essential feature of hollowing, independent of the specific geometry. Finally, we relate our work to past and ongoing experimental efforts and consider the influence of gravity on thin condensate shells. We identify the conditions under which gravitational sag is highly destructive and study the mode-mixing effects of microgravity on the collective modes of these shells.

Unequivocal signatures of Majorana zero energy modes in condensed matter systems and manipulation of the associated electron parity states are highly sought after for fundamental reasons as well as for the prospect of topological quantum computing. In this Letter, we demonstrate that a ring of Josephson coupled topological superconducting islands threaded by magnetic flux and attached to a quantum dot acts as an excellent parity-controlled probe of Majorana mode physics. As a function of flux threading through the ring, standard Josephson coupling yields a $\Phi_0=h/(2 e)$ periodic features corresponding to $2\pi$ phase difference periodicity. In contrast, Majorana mode assisted tunneling provides additional features with $2\Phi_0$ ($4\pi$ phase difference) periodicity, associated with single electron processes. We find that increasing the number of islands in the ring enhances the visibility of the desired $4\pi$ periodic components in the groundstate energy. Moreover as a unique characterization tool, tuning the occupation energy of the quantum dot allows controlled groundstate parity changes in the ring, enabling a toggling between $\Phi_0$ and $2\Phi_0$ periodicity.

Bose-Einstein condensate shells, while occurring in ultracold systems of coexisting phases and potentially within neutron stars, have yet to be realized in isolation on Earth due to the experimental challenge of overcoming gravitational sag. Motivated by the expected realization of hollow condensates by the space-based Cold Atomic Laboratory in microgravity conditions, we study a spherical condensate undergoing a topological change from a filled sphere to a hollow shell. We argue that the collective modes of the system show marked and robust signatures of this hollowing transition accompanied by the appearance of a new boundary. In particular, we demonstrate that the frequency spectrum of the breathing modes shows a pronounced depression as it evolves from the filled sphere limit to the hollowing transition. Furthermore, when the center of the system becomes hollow surface modes show a global restructuring of their spectrum due to the availability of a new, inner, surface for supporting density distortions. We pinpoint universal features of this topological transition as well as analyse the spectral evolution of collective modes in the experimentally relevant case of a bubble-trap.

In this paper we consider a layered heterostructure of an Abelian topologically ordered state (TO), such as a fractional Chern insulator/quantum Hall state with an s-wave superconductor in order to explore the existence of non-Abelian defects. In order to uncover such defects we must augment the original TO by a $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge theory sector coming from the s-wave SC. We first determine the extended TO for a wide variety of fractional quantum Hall or fractional Chern insulator heterostructures. We prove the existence of a general anyon permutation symmetry (AS) that exists in any fermionic Abelian TO state in contact with an s-wave superconductor. Physically this permutation corresponds to adding a fermion to an odd flux vortices (in units of $h/2e$) as they travel around the associated topological (twist) defect. As such, we call it a fermion parity flip AS. We consider twist defects which mutate anyons according to the fermion parity flip symmetry and show that they can be realized at domain walls between distinct gapped edges or interfaces of the TO superconducting state. We analyze the properties of such defects and show that fermion parity flip twist defects are always associated with Majorana zero modes. Our formalism also reproduces known results such as Majorana/parafermionic bound states at superconducting domain walls of topological/Fractional Chern insulators when twist defects are constructed based on charge conjugation symmetry. Finally, we briefly describe more exotic twist liquid phases obtained by gauging the AS where the twist defects become deconfined anyonic excitations.

We study the decay and oscillations of Majorana fermion wavefunctions and ground state (GS) fermion parity in one-dimensional topological superconducting lattice systems. Using a Majorana transfer matrix method, we find that Majorana wavefunction properties are encoded in the associated Lyapunov exponent, which in turn is the sum of two independent components: a `superconducting component' which characterizes the gap induced decay, and the `normal component', which determines the oscillations and response to chemical potential configurations. The topological phase transition separating phases with and without Majorana end modes is seen to be a cancellation of these two components. We show that Majorana wavefunction oscillations are completely determined by an underlying non-superconducting tight-binding model and are solely responsible for GS fermion parity switches in finite-sized systems. These observations enable us to analytically chart out wavefunction oscillations, the resultant GS parity configuration as a function of parameter space in uniform wires, and special parity switch points where degenerate zero energy Majorana modes are restored in spite of finite size effects. For disordered wires, we find that band oscillations are completely washed out leading to a second localization length for the Majorana mode and the remnant oscillations are randomized as per Anderson localization physics in normal systems. Our transfer matrix method further allows us to i) reproduce known results on the scaling of mid-gap Majorana states and demonstrate the origin of its log-normal distribution, ii) identify contrasting behavior of disorder-dependent GS parity switches for the cases of even versus odd number of lattice sites, and iii) chart out the GS parity configuration and associated parity switch points as a function of disorder strength.

In the context of an isolated three-dimensional noninteracting fermionic lattice system, we study the effects of a sudden quantum quench between a disorder-free situation and one in which disorder results in a mobility edge and associated Anderson localization. Salient post-quench features hinge upon the overlap between momentum states and post-quench eigenstates and whether these latter states are extended or localized. We find that the post-quench momentum distribution directly reflects these overlaps. For the local density, we show that disorder generically prevents the equilibration of quantum expectation values to a steady state and that the persistent fluctuations have a nonmonotonic dependence on the strength of disorder. We identify two distinct types of fluctuations, namely, temporal fluctuations describing the time-dependent fluctuations of the local density around its time average and sample-to-sample fluctuations characterizing the variations of these time averages from one realization of disorder to another. We demonstrate that both of these fluctuations vanish for extremely extended as well as extremely localized states, peaking at some intermediate value.

We study how universal properties of quantum quenches across critical points are modified by a weak coupling to thermal dissipation, focusing on the paradigmatic case of the transverse field Ising model. Beyond the standard quench-induced Kibble-Zurek defect production in the absence of the bath, the bath contributes extra thermal defects. We show that spatial correlations in the noise produced by the bath can play a crucial role: one obtains quantitatively different scaling regimes depending on whether the correlation length of the noise is smaller or larger than the Kibble-Zurek length associated with the quench speed, and the thermal length set by temperature. For the case of spatially-correlated bath noise, additional thermal defect generation is restricted to a window that is both quantum critical and excluded from the non-equilibrium regime surrounding the critical point. We map the dissipative quench problem to a set of effectively independent dissipative Landau-Zener problems. Using this mapping along with both analytic and numerical calculations allows us to find the scaling of the excess defect density produced in the quench, and suggests a generic picture for such dissipative quenches.

A highlighting feature of Majorana bound states in two-dimensional topological superconductors is that they gain a phase factor of $\pi$ upon being orbited by a vortex. This work focuses on the vortex degree of freedom itself and demonstrates that the change in the Majorana state is accompanied by a fermion parity change within the vortex. Such a parity flip is interpreted as a higher dimensional analog of the fermion parity pump mechanism in superconducting wires as well as through general topological arguments. It is demonstrated in terms of level crossings in three different situations - in i) spin-triplet paired superconductors, and in proximity-induced superconducting systems involving ii) quantum spin Hall-ferromagnet hybrids and iii) Chern insulators.

We theoretically explore quench dynamics in a finite-sized topological fermionic p-wave superconducting wire with the goal of demonstrating that topological order can have marked effects on such non-equilibrium dynamics. In the case studied here, topological order is reflected in the presence of two (nearly) isolated Majorana fermionic end bound modes together forming an electronic state that can be occupied or not, leading to two (nearly) degenerate ground states characterized by fermion parity. Our study begins with a characterization of the static properties of the finite-sized wire, including the behavior of the Majorana end modes and the form of the tunnel coupling between them; a transfer matrix approach to analytically determine the locations of the zero energy contours where this coupling vanishes; and a Pfaffian approach to map the ground state parity in the associated phase diagram. We next study the quench dynamics resulting from initializing the system in a topological ground state and then dynamically tuning one of the parameters of the Hamiltonian. For this, we develop a dynamic quantum many-body technique that invokes a Wick's theorem for Majorana fermions, vastly reducing the numerical effort given the exponentially large Hilbert space. We investigate the salient and detailed features of two dynamic quantities - the overlap between the time-evolved state and the instantaneous ground state (adiabatic fidelity) and the residual energy. When the parity of the instantaneous ground state flips successively with time, we find that the time-evolved state can dramatically switch back and forth between this state and an excited state even when the quenching is very slow, a phenomenon that we term "parity blocking". This parity blocking becomes prominently manifest as non-analytic jumps as a function of time in both dynamic quantities.

The superconducting proximity effect has played an important role in recent work searching for Majorana modes in thin semiconductor devices. Using transport measurements to quantify the changes in the semiconductor caused by the proximity effect provides a measure of dynamical processes such as screening and scattering. However, in a two terminal measurement the resistance due to the interface conductance is in series with resistance of transport in the semiconductor. Both of these change, and it is impossible to separate them without more information. We have devised a new three terminal device that provides two resistance measurements that are sufficient to extract both the junction conductance and the two dimensional sheet resistance under the superconducting contact. We have compared junctions between Nb and InAs and Nb and 30% InGaAs all grown before being removed from the ultra high vacuum molecular beam epitaxy growth system. The most transparent junctions are to InAs, where the transmission coefficient per Landauer mode is greater than 0.6. Contacts made with ex-situ deposition are substantially more opaque. We find that for the most transparent junctions, the largest fractional change as the temperature is lowered is to the resistance of the semiconductor.

We study the dynamics of a quantum spin Hall edge coupled to a magnet with its own dynamics. Using spin transfer torque principles, we analyze the interplay between spin currents in the edge state and dynamics of the axis of the magnet, and draw parallels with circuit analogies. As a highlighting feature, we show that while coupling to a magnet typically renders the edge state insulating by opening a gap, in the presence of a small potential bias, spin-transfer torque can restore perfect conductance by transferring angular momentum to the magnet. In the presence of interactions within the edge state, we employ a Luttinger liquid treatment to show that the edge, when subject to a small voltage bias, tends to form a unique dynamic rotating spin wave state that naturally couples into the dynamics of the magnet. We briefly discuss realistic physical parameters and constraints for observing this interplay between quantum spin Hall and spin-transfer torque physics.

We present a comprehensive study of two of the most experimentally relevant extensions of Kitaev's spinless model of a 1D p-wave superconductor: those involving (i) longer range hopping and superconductivity and (ii) inhomogeneous potentials. We commence with a pedagogical review of the spinless model and, as a means of characterizing topological phases exhibited by the systems studied here, we introduce bulk topological invariants as well as those derived from an explicit consideration of boundary modes. In time-reversal invariant systems, we find that the longer range hopping leads to topological phases characterized by multiple Majorana modes. In particular, we investigate a spin model, which respects a duality and maps to a fermionic model with multiple Majorana modes; we highlight the connection between these topological phases and the broken symmetry phases in the original spin model. In the presence of time-reversal symmetry breaking terms, we show that the topological phase diagram is characterized by an extended gapless regime. For the case of inhomogeneous potentials, we explore phase diagrams of periodic, quasiperiodic, and disordered systems. We present a detailed mapping between normal state localization properties of such systems and the topological phases of the corresponding superconducting systems. This powerful tool allows us to leverage the analyses of Hofstadter's butterfly and the vast literature on Anderson localization to the question of Majorana modes in superconducting quasiperiodic and disordered systems, respectively. We briefly touch upon the synergistic effects that can be expected in cases where long-range hopping and disorder are both present.

We study electronic transport in junctions consisting of a superconductor electrode and two ferromagnet (F) leads in which crossed Andreev reflections (CAR) and elastic cotunnelings are accommodated. We model the system using an extended Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk treatment with a key modification that accounts for spin-dependent interfacial barriers (SDIB). We compute current-voltage relations as a function of parameters characterizing the SDIB, magnetization in the F leads, geometry of the junction, and temperature. Our results reveal a rich range of significantly altered physics due to a combination of interfering spin-dependent scattering processes and population imbalance in the ferromagnets, such as a significant enhancement in CAR current and a sign change in the relative difference between resistance of two cases having a antiparallel or parallel alignment of the magnetization in the F leads, respectively. Our model accounts for the surprising experimental findings of positive relative resistance by M. Colci et al. [Phys. Rev. B 85, 180512(R) (2012)] as well as previously measured negative relative resistance results, both within sufficiently large parameter regions.

We present a unified study of the effect of periodic, quasiperiodic and disordered potentials on topological phases that are characterized by Majorana end modes in 1D p-wave superconducting systems. We define a topological invariant derived from the equations of motion for Majorana modes and, as our first application, employ it to characterize the phase diagram for simple periodic structures. Our general result is a relation between the topological invariant and the normal state localization length. This link allows us to leverage the considerable literature on localization physics and obtain the topological phase diagrams and their salient features for quasiperiodic and disordered systems for the entire region of parameter space.

We explore a spin Josephson effect in a system of two ferromagnets coupled by a tunnel junction formed of 2D time-reversal invariant topological insulators. In analogy with the more commonly studied instance of the Josephson effect for charge in superconductors, we investigate properties of the phase-coherent \it spin current resulting from the misalignment of the in-plane magnetization angles of the two ferromagnets. We show that the topological insulating barrier offers the exciting prospect of hosting a \it fractional spin Josephson effect mediated by bound states at the ferromagnet-topological insulator interface. We provide multiple perspectives to understand the $4\pi$ periodic nature of this effect. We discuss several measurable consequences, such as, the generation of a transverse voltage signal which allows for purely electrical measurements, an inverse of this effect where an applied voltage gives rise to a transverse spin-current, and a fractional AC spin-Josephson effect.

We study the fractionalization of an electron tunneling into a strongly interacting electronic one-dimensional ring. As a complement to transport measurements in quantum wires connected to leads, we propose non-invasive measures involving the magnetic field profile around the ring to probe this fractionalization. In particular, we show that the magnetic-field squared produced by the electron and the power that it would induce in a detector exhibit anisotropic profiles that depend on the degree of fractionalization. We contrast true fractionalization with two other scenarios which could mimic it -- quantum superposition and classical probabilistic electron insertion. We show that the proposed field-dependent measures and those of the persistent current can distinguish between these three scenarios.

We provide a characterization of tunneling between coupled topological insulators in 2D and 3D under the influence of a ferromagnetic layer. We explore conditions for such systems to exhibit integer quantum Hall physics and localized fractional charge, also taking into account interaction effects for the 2D case. We show that the effects of tunneling are topologically equivalent to a certain deformation or folding of the sample geometry. Our key advance is the realization that the quantum Hall or fractional charge physics can appear in the presence of only a \emphsingle magnet unlike previous proposals which involve magnetic domain walls on the surface or edges of topological insulators respectively. We give illustrative topological folding arguments to prove our results and show that for the 2D case our results are robust even in the presence of interactions.

We study the quenching dynamics of a many-body system in one dimension described by a Hamiltonian that has spatial periodicity. Specifically, we consider a spin-1/2 chain with equal xx and yy couplings and subject to a periodically varying magnetic field in the z direction or, equivalently, a tight-binding model of spinless fermions with a periodic local chemical potential, having period 2q, where q is a natural number. For a linear quench of the magnetic field strength (or potential strength) at rate 1/\tau across a quantum critical point, we find that the density of defects thereby produced scales as 1/\tau^q/(q+1), deviating from the 1/\sqrt\tau scaling that is ubiquitous to a range of systems. We analyze this behavior by mapping the low-energy physics of the system to a set of fermionic two-level systems labeled by the lattice momentum k undergoing a non-linear quench as well as by performing numerical simulations. We also find that if the magnetic field is a superposition of different periods, the power law depends only on the smallest period for very large values of \tau although it may exhibit a cross-over at intermediate values of \tau. Finally, for the case where a zz coupling is also present in the spin chain, or equivalently, where interactions are present in the fermionic system, we argue that the power associated with the scaling law depends on a combination of q and interaction strength.

We explore the phases exhibited by an interacting quantum spin Hall edge state in the presence of finite chemical potential (applied gate voltage) and spin imbalance (applied magnetic field). We find that the helical nature of the edge state gives rise to orders that are expected to be absent in non-chiral one-dimensional electronic systems. For repulsive interactions, the ordered state has an oscillatory spin texture whose ordering wavevector is controlled by the chemical potential. We analyze the manner in which a magnetic impurity provides signatures of such oscillations. We find that finite spin imbalance favors a finite current carrying groundstate that is not condensed in the absence of interactions and is superconducting for attractive interactions. This state is characterized by FFLO-type oscillations where the Cooper pairs obtain a finite center of mass momentum.

We study the transport properties of nanoscale superconducting (S) devices in which two superconducting electrodes are bridged by two parallel ferromagnetic (F) wires, forming an SFFS junction with a separation between the two wires less than the superconducting coherence length. This allows crossed Andreev reflection to take place. We find that the resistance as a function of temperature exhibits behavior reminiscent of the re-entrant effect and, at low temperatures and excitation energies below the superconducting gap, the resistance corresponding to antiparallel alignment of the magnetization of the ferromagnetic wires is higher than that of parallel alignment, in contrast to the behavior expected from crossed Andreev reflection. We present a model based on spin-dependent interface scattering that explains this surprising result and demonstrates the sensitivity of the junction transport properties to interfacial parameters.

We explore the salient features of the `Kitaev ladder', a two-legged ladder version of the spin-1/2 Kitaev model on a honeycomb lattice, by mapping it to a one-dimensional fermionic p-wave superconducting system. We examine the connections between spin phases and topologically non-trivial phases of non-interacting fermionic systems, demonstrating the equivalence between the spontaneous breaking of global Z2 symmetry in spin systems and the existence of isolated Majorana modes. In the Kitaev ladder, we investigate topological properties of the system in different sectors characterized by the presence or absence of a vortex in each plaquette of the ladder. We show that vortex patterns can yield a rich parameter space for tuning into topologically non-trivial phases. We introduce a new topological invariant which explicitly determines the presence of zero energy Majorana modes at the boundaries of such phases. Finally, we discuss dynamic quenching between topologically non-trivial phases in the Kitaev ladder, and in particular, the post-quench dynamics governed by tuning through a quantum critical point.

The entanglement in quantum XY spin chains of arbitrary length is investigated via the geometric (measure of) entanglement. The emergence of entanglement is explained intuitively from the perspective of perturbations. The model is solved exactly and the energy spectrum is determined and analyzed in particular for the lowest two levels. The entanglement is obtained over the entire phase diagram, and its behavior can be used to delineate the boundaries in the phase diagram. For example, the field-derivative of the entanglement becomes singular along the critical line. The form of the divergence turns out to be dictated by the universality class controlling the quantum phase transition. The entanglement near criticality can be understood via a scaling hypothesis, analogous to that for free energies. The entanglement density vanishes along the so-called disorder line in the phase diagram, the ground space is doubly degenerate and spanned by two product states. The entanglement for the superposition of the lowest two states is also investigated. Even though the exact value of the entanglement depends on the specific form of superposition, in the thermodynamic limit the entanglement density is independent of the superposition, showing that the entanglement density is insensitive to whether the ground state is chosen to be the spontaneously $Z_2$ symmetry broken one or not. The finite-size scaling of entanglement at critical points is also investigated from two different view points: (1) the maximum in the field-derivative of the entanglement density vs. the system size, used to deduce the correlation length exponent for the Ising class by the behavior of entanglement; (2) the correction to the entanglement density vs. the system size, with the coefficient being universal (but with different values for the two lowest states).

As a means of realizing oscillatory pairing between fermions, we study superfluid pairing between two fermion "spin" species that are confined to adjustable spin-dependent trapping potentials. Focusing on the one-dimensional limit, we find that with increasing separation between the spin-dependent traps the fermions exhibit distinct phases, including a fully paired phase, a spin-imbalanced phase with oscillatory pairing, and an unpaired fully spin-polarized phase. We obtain the phase diagram of fermions in such a spin-split trap and discuss signatures of these phases in cold-atom experiments.

We propose a two-path vortex interferometry experiment based on the Aharonov-Casher effect for detecting the non-Abelian nature of vortices in a chiral p-wave superconductor. The effect is based on observing vortex interference patterns upon enclosing a finite charge of externally controllable magnitude within the interference path. We predict that when the interfering vortices enclose an odd number of identical vortices in their path, the interference pattern disappears only for non-Abelian vortices. When pairing involves two distinct spin species, we derive the mutual statistics between half quantum and full quantum vortices and show that, remarkably, our predictions still hold for the situation of a full quantum vortex enclosing a half quantum vortex in its path. We discuss the experimentally relevant conditions under which these effects can be observed.

We introduce a one-dimensional version of the Kitaev model consisting of spins on a two-legged ladder and characterized by Z_2 invariants on the plaquettes of the ladder. We map the model to a fermionic system and identify the topological sectors associated with different Z_2 patterns in terms of fermion occupation numbers. Within these different sectors, we investigate the effect of a linear quench across a quantum critical point. We study the dominant behavior of the system by employing a Landau-Zener-type analysis of the effective Hamiltonian in the low-energy subspace for which the effective quenching can sometimes be non-linear. We show that the quenching leads to a residual energy which scales as a power of the quenching rate, and that the power depends on the topological sectors and their symmetry properties in a non-trivial way. This behavior is consistent with the general theory of quantum quenching, but with the correlation length exponent \nu being different in different sectors.

Geometric and structural constraints greatly restrict the selection of folds adapted by protein backbones, and yet, folded proteins show an astounding diversity in functionality. For structure to have any bearing on function, it is thus imperative that, apart from the protein backbone, other tunable degrees of freedom be accountable. Here, we focus on side-chain interactions, which non-covalently link amino acids in folded proteins to form a network structure. At a coarse-grained level, we show that the network conforms remarkably well to realizations of random graphs and displays associated percolation behavior. Thus, within the rigid framework of the protein backbone that restricts the structure space, the side-chain interactions exhibit an element of randomness, which account for the functional flexibility and diversity shown by proteins. However, at a finer level, the network exhibits deviations from these random graphs which, as we demonstrate for a few specific examples, reflect the intrinsic uniqueness in the structure and stability, and perhaps specificity in the functioning of biological proteins.

We investigate the properties of conduction electrons in single-walled armchair carbon nanotubes in the presence of mutually orthogonal electric and magnetic fields transverse to the tube's axis. We find that the fields give rise to an asymmetric dispersion in the right- and left-moving electrons along the tube as well as a band-dependent interaction. We predict that such a nanotube system would exhibit spin-band-charge separation and a band-dependant tunneling density of states. We show that in the quantum dot limit, the fields serve to completely tune the quantum states of electrons added to the nanotube. For each of the predicted effects, we provide examples and estimates that are relevant to experiment.

We study the system of two localized anyons in the lowest Landau level and show how anyonic signatures extrapolating between anti-bunching tendencies of fermions and bunching tendencies of bosons become manifest in the two-particle correlations. Towards probing these correlations, we discuss the influence of a saddle potential on these anyons; we exploit analogies from quantum optics to analyze the time-evolution of such a system. We show that the saddle potential can act as a beam splitter akin to those in bosonic and fermionic systems and can provide a means of measuring the derived anyonic signatures.

We investigate the properties of conduction electrons in single-walled armchair carbon nanotubes (SWNT) in the presence of both transverse electric and magnetic fields. We find that these fields provide a controlled means of tuning low-energy band structure properties such as inducing gaps in the spectrum, breaking various symmetries and altering the Fermi velocities. We show that the fields can strongly affect electron-electron interaction, yielding tunable Luttinger liquid physics, the possibility of spin-charge-band separation, and a competition between spin-density-wave and charge-density-wave order. For short tubes, the fields can alter boundary conditions and associated single-particle level spacings as well as quantum dot behavior.

We study interacting bosons in optical lattices in the weak-tunneling regime in systems that exhibit the coexistence of Mott-insulating and condensed phases. We discuss the nature of the condensed ground state in this regime and the validity of the mean-field treatment thereof. We suggest two experimental signatures of condensate order in the system. (1) We analyze the hyperfine configuration of the system and propose a set of experimental parameters for observing radio-frequency spectra that would demonstrate the existence of the condensed phase between Mott-insulating phases. We derive the structure of the signal from the condensate in a typical trapped system, taking into account Goldstone excitations, and discuss its evolution as a function of temperature. (2) We study matter-wave interference patterns displayed by the system upon release from all confining potentials. We show that as the density profiles evolve very differently for the Mott-insulating phase and the condensed phase, they can be distinguished from one another when the two phases coexist.

We investigate the static and dynamic properties of bosonic lattice systems in which condensed and Mott insulating phases co-exist due to the presence of a spatially-varying potential. We formulate a description of these inhomogeneous systems and calculate the bulk energy at and near equilibrium. We derive the explicit form of the Josephson coupling between disjoint superfluid regions separated by Mott insulating regions. We obtain detailed estimates for the experimentally-realized case of alternating superfluid and Mott insulating spherical shells in a radially symmetric parabolically-confined cold atom system.

We study various geometrical aspects of the propagation of particles obeying fractional statistics in the physical setting of the quantum Hall system. We find a discrete set of zeros for the two-particle kernel in the lowest Landau level; these arise from a combination of a two-particle Aharonov-Bohm effect and the exchange phase related to fractional statistics. The kernel also shows short distance exclusion statistics, for instance, in a power law behavior as a function of initial and final positions of the particles. We employ the one-particle kernel to compute impurity-mediated tunneling amplitudes between different edges of a finite-sized quantum Hall system and and find that they vanishes for certain strengths and locations of the impurity scattering potentials. We show that even in the absence of scattering, the correlation functions between different edges exhibits unusual features for a narrow enough Hall bar.

We theoretically explore the possibility of a superconducting proximity effect in single-walled metallic carbon nanotubes due to the presence of a superconducting substrate. An unconventional double-gap situation can arise in the two bands for nanotubes of large radius wherein the tunneling is (almost) symmetric in the two sublattices. In such a case, a proximity effect can take place in the symmetric band below a critical experimentally-accessible Coulomb interaction strength in the nanotube. Furthermore, due to interactions in the nanotube, the appearance of a BCS gap in this band stabilizes superconductivity in the other band at lower temperatures. We also discuss the scenario of highly asymmetric tunneling and show that this case too supports double-gap superconductivity.

We derive single-particle and two-particle correlators of anyons in the presence of a magnetic field in the lowest Landau level. We show that the two-particle correlator exhibits signatures of fractional statistics which can distinguish anyons from their fermionic and bosonic counterparts. These signatures include the zeroes of the two-particle correlator and its exclusion behavior. We find that the single-particle correlator in finite geometries carries valuable information relevant to experiments in which quasiparticles on the edge of a quantum Hall system tunnel through its bulk.

Recent experiments on strongly-interacting bosons in optical lattices have revealed the co-existence of spatially-separated Mott-insulating and number-fluctuating phases. The description of this inhomogeneous situation is the topic of this Letter. We establish that the number-fluctuating phase forms a superfluid trapped between the Mott-insulating regions and derive the associated collective mode structure. We discuss the interlayer's crossover between two- and three-dimensional behavior as a function of the lattice parameters and estimate the critical temperatures for the transition of the superfluid phase to a normal phase.

We explore the physics of three-dimensional shell-shaped condensates, relevant to cold atoms in "bubble traps" and to Mott insulator-superfluid systems in optical lattices. We study the ground state of the condensate wavefunction, spherically-symmetric collective modes, and expansion properties of such a shell using a combination of analytical and numerical techniques. We find two breathing-type modes with frequencies that are distinct from that of the filled spherical condensate. Upon trap release and subsequent expansion, we find that the system displays self-interference fringes. We estimate characteristic time scales, degree of mass accumulation, three-body loss, and kinetic energy release during expansion for a typical system of Rb87.

A central long standing prediction of the theory of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) states that it is a topological fluid whose elementary excitations are vortices with fractional charge and fractional statistics. Yet, the unambiguous experimental detection of this fundamental property, that the vortices have fractional statistics, has remained an open challenge. Here we propose a three-terminal ``T-junction'' as an experimental setup for the direct and independent measurement of the fractional charge and statistics of fractional quantum Hall quasiparticles via cross current noise measurements. We present a non-equilibrium calculation of the quantum noise in the T-junction setup for FQH Jain states. We show that the cross current correlation (noise) can be written in a simple form, a sum of two terms, which reflects the braiding properties of the quasiparticles: the statistics dependence captured in a factor of $\cos\theta$ in one of two contributions. Through analyzing these two contributions for different parameter ranges that are experimentally relevant, we demonstrate that the noise at finite temperature reveals signatures of generalized exclusion principles, fractional exchange statistics and fractional charge. We also predict that the vortices of Laughlin states exhibit a ``bunching'' effect, while higher states in the Jain sequences exhibit an ``anti-bunching'' effect.

The elementary excitations of fractional quantum Hall (FQH) fluids are vortices with fractional statistics. Yet, this fundamental prediction has remained an open experimental challenge. Here we show that the cross current noise in a three-terminal tunneling experiment of a two dimensional electron gas in the FQH regime can be used to detect directly the statistical angle of the excitations of these topological quantum fluids. We show that the noise also reveals signatures of exclusion statistics and of fractional charge. The vortices of Laughlin states should exhibit a ``bunching'' effect, while for higher states in the Jain sequences they should exhibit an ``anti-bunching'' effect.

We consider the feasibility of creating a phase of neutral bosonic atoms in which multiple Mott-insulating states coexist in a shell structure and propose an experiment to spatially resolve such a structure. This spatially-inhomogeneous phase of bosons, arising from the interplay between the confining potential and the short-ranged repulsion, has been previously predicted. While the Mott-insulator phase has been observed in an atomic gas, the spatial structure of this phase in the presence of an inhomogeneous potential has not yet been directly probed. In this paper, we give a simple recipe for creating a structure with any desired number of shells, and explore the stability of the structure under typical experimental conditions. The stability analysis gives some constraints on how successfully these states can be employed for quantum information experiments. The experimental probe we propose for observing this phase exploits transitions between two species of bosons, induced by applying a frequency-swept, oscillatory magnetic field. We present the expected experimental signatures of this probe, and show that they reflect the underlying Mott configuration for large lattice potential depth.

Localization and delocalization of non-interacting quasiparticle states in a superconducting wire are reconsidered, for the cases in which spin-rotation symmetry is absent, and time-reversal symmetry is either broken or unbroken; these are referred to as symmetry classes BD and DIII, respectively. We show that, if a continuum limit is taken to obtain a Fokker-Planck (FP) equation for the transfer matrix, as in some previous work, then when there are more than two scattering channels, all terms that break a certain symmetry are lost. It was already known that the resulting FP equation exhibits critical behavior. The additional symmetry is not required by the definition of the symmetry classes; terms that break it arise from non-Gaussian probability distributions, and may be kept in a generalized FP equation. We show that they lead to localization in a long wire. When the wire has more than two scattering channels, these terms are irrelevant at the short distance (diffusive or ballistic) fixed point, but as they are relevant at the long-distance critical fixed point, they are termed dangerously irrelevant. We confirm the results in a supersymmetry approach for class BD, where the additional terms correspond to jumps between the two components of the sigma model target space. We consider the effect of random $\pi$ fluxes, which prevent the system localizing. We show that in one dimension the transitions in these two symmetry classes, and also those in the three chiral symmetry classes, all lie in the same universality class.

Entanglement in quantum XY spin chains of arbitrary length is investigated via a recently-developed global measure suitable for generic quantum many-body systems. The entanglement surface is determined over the phase diagram, and found to exhibit structure richer than expected. Near the critical line, the entanglement is peaked (albeit analytically), consistent with the notion that entanglement--the non-factorization of wave functions--reflects quantum correlations. Singularity does, however, accompany the critical line, as revealed by the divergence of the field-derivative of the entanglement along the line. The form of this singularity is dictated by the universality class controlling the quantum phase transition.

We propose tunnel junctions of a Hall bar and a superconducting lead, for observing Cooper-pair tunneling into singlet fractional quantum Hall edge states. These tunnel junctions provide a natural means of extracting precise information of the spin polarization and the filling factor of the state. The low energy regime of one of the set-ups is governed by a novel quantum entangled fixed point.

We investigate the finite temperature critical dynamics of three-dimensional superconductors in the charged regime, described by a transverse gauge field coupling to the superconducting order parameter. Assuming relaxational dynamics for both the order parameter and the gauge fields, within a dynamical renormalization group scheme, we find a new dynamic universality class characterized by a finite fixed point ratio between the transport co-efficients associated with the order parameter and gauge fields, respectively. We find signatures of this universality class in various measurable physical quantities, and in the existence of a universal amplitude ratio formed by a combination of physical quantities.

The Hanbury Brown-Twiss experiment has proved to be an effective means of probing statistics of particles. Here, in a set-up involving edge-state quasiparticles in a fractional quantum Hall system, we show that a variant of the experiment composed of two sources and two sinks can be used to unearth fractional statistics. We find a clear cut signature of the statistics in the equal-time current-current correlation function for quasiparticle currents emerging from the two sources and collected at the sinks.
