Low-dimensional quantum magnets are a versatile materials platform for studying the emergent many-body physics and collective excitations that can arise even in systems with only short-range interactions. Understanding their low-temperature structure and spin Hamiltonian is key to explaining their magnetic properties, including unconventional quantum phases, phase transitions, and excited states. We study the metal-organic coordination compound (C$_5$H$_9$NH$_3$)$_2$CuBr$_4$ and its deuterated counterpart, which upon its discovery was identified as a candidate two-leg quantum ($S = 1/2$) spin ladder in the strong-leg coupling regime. By growing large single crystals and probing them with both bulk and microscopic techniques, we deduce that two previously unknown structural phase transitions take place between 136 K and 113 K. The low-temperature structure has a monoclinic unit cell giving rise to two inequivalent spin ladders. We further confirm the absence of long-range magnetic order down to 30 mK and discuss the implications of this two-ladder structure for the magnetic properties of (C$_5$H$_9$NH$_3$)$_2$CuBr$_4$.

In orthoferrites the rare-earth (R) ion has a big impact on structural and magnetic properties in particular the ionic size influences the octahedral tilt and the R3+- Fe3+ interaction modifies properties like the spin reorientation. Growth induced strain in thin films is another means to modify materials properties since the sign of strain affects the bond length and therefore directly the orbital interaction. Our study focuses on epitaxially grown (010) oriented DyFeO3 and LuFeO3 thin films, thereby investigating the impact of compressive lattice strain on the magnetically active Dy3+ and magnetically inactive Lu3+ compared to uniaxially strained single crystal DyFeO3. The DyFeO3 films exhibits a shift of more than 20K in spin-reorientation temperatures, maintain the antiferromagnetic \Gamma4 phase of the Fe-lattice below the spin reorientation, and show double step hysteresis loops for both in-plane directions between 5 K and 390 K. This is the signature of an Fe-spin induced ferromagnetic Dy3+ lattice above the Néel temperature of the Dy. The observed shift in the film spin reorientation temperatures vs lattice strain is in good agreement with isostatic single crystal neutron diffraction experiments with a rate of 2 K/ kbar bar.

The kagome lattice has emerged as a promising platform for hosting unconventional chiral charge order at high temperatures. Notably, in LaRu$_{3}$Si$_{2}$, a room-temperature charge-ordered state with a propagation vector of ($\frac{1}{4}$,~0,~0) has been recently identified. However, understanding the interplay between this charge order and superconductivity, particularly with respect to time-reversal-symmetry breaking, remains elusive. In this study, we employ single crystal X-ray diffraction, magnetotransport, and muon-spin rotation experiments to investigate the charge order and its electronic and magnetic responses in LaRu$_{3}$Si$_{2}$ across a wide temperature range down to the superconducting state. Our findings reveal the emergence of a charge order with a propagation vector of ($\frac{1}{6}$,~0,~0) below $T_{\rm CO,2}$ ${\simeq}$ 80 K, coexisting with the previously identified room-temperature primary charge order ($\frac{1}{4}$,~0,~0). The primary charge-ordered state exhibits zero magnetoresistance. In contrast, the appearance of the secondary charge order at $T_{\rm CO,2}$ is accompanied by a notable magnetoresistance response and a pronounced temperature-dependent Hall effect, which experiences a sign reversal, switching from positive to negative below $T^{*}$ ${\simeq}$ 35 K. Intriguingly, we observe an enhancement in the internal field width sensed by the muon ensemble below $T^{*}$ ${\simeq}$ 35 K. Moreover, the muon spin relaxation rate exhibits a substantial increase upon the application of an external magnetic field below $T_{\rm CO,2}$ ${\simeq}$ 80 K. Our results highlight the coexistence of two distinct types of charge order in LaRu$_{3}$Si$_{2}$ within the correlated kagome lattice, namely a non-magnetic charge order ($\frac{1}{4}$,~0,~0) below $T_{\rm co,1}$ ${\simeq}$ 400 K and a time-reversal-symmetry-breaking charge order below $T_{\rm CO,2}$.

Vacancies play a crucial role in solid-state physics, but their impact on materials with strong electron-electron correlations has been underexplored. A recent study on the Ir-Sb binary system, Ir$_{16}$Sb$_{18}$ revealed a novel extended buckled-honeycomb vacancy (BHV) order. Superconductivity is induced by suppressing the BHV ordering through high-pressure growth with excess Ir atoms or isovalent Rh substitution, although the nature of superconducting pairing has remained unexplored. Here, we conduct muon spin rotation experiments probing the temperature-dependence of the effective magnetic penetration depth $\lambda_{eff}\left(T\right)$ in Ir$_{1-{\delta}}$Sb (synthesized at 5.5 GPa with $T_{\rm c}$ = 4.2 K) and ambient pressure synthesized optimally Rh-doped Ir$_{1-x}$Rh$_{x}$Sb ($x$=0.3, $T_{\rm c}$ = 2.7 K). The exponential temperature dependence of the superfluid density $n_{\rm s}$/m$^{*}$ at low temperatures indicates a fully gapped superconducting state in both samples. Notably, the ratio of $T_{\rm c}$ to the superfluid density is comparable to previously measured unconventional superconductors. A significant increase in $n_{\rm s}$/m$^{*}$ in the high-pressure synthesized sample correlates with $T_{\rm c}$, a hallmark feature of unconventional superconductivity. We further demonstrate a similar effect induced by chemical pressure (Rh substitution) and hydrostatic pressure in Ir$_{1-x}$Rh$_{x}$Sb, highlighting that the dome-shaped phase diagram is a fundamental feature of the material. These findings underscore the unconventional nature of the observed superconductivity, and classifies IrSb as the first unconventional superconducting parent phase with ordered vacancies.

Strongly correlated electron materials are often characterized by competition and interplay of multiple quantum states. For example, in high-temperature cuprate superconductors unconventional superconductivity, spin- and charge-density wave orders coexist. A key question is whether competing states coexist on the atomic scale or if they segregate into distinct 'islands'. Using X-ray diffraction, we investigate the competition between charge order and superconductivity in the archetypal cuprate La(2-x)BaxCuO4, around the x = 1/8-doping, where uniaxial stress restores optimal 3D superconductivity at approximately 0.06 GPa. We find that the charge order peaks and the correlation length along the stripe are strongly reduced up to the critical stress, above which they stay constant. Simultaneously, the charge order onset temperature only shows a modest decrease. Our findings suggest that optimal 3D superconductivity is not linked to the absence of charge stripes but instead requires their arrangement into smaller 'islands'. Our results provide insight into the length scales over which the interplay between superconductivity and charge order takes place.

We use resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) at the O $K$- and Cu $K$-edges to investigate the doping- and temperature dependence of low-energy plasmon excitations in La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_4$. We observe a monotonic increase of the energy scale of the plasmons with increasing doping $x$ in the underdoped regime, whereas a saturation occurs above optimal doping $x \gtrsim 0.16$ and persists at least up to $x = 0.4$. Furthermore, we find that the plasmon excitations show only a marginal temperature dependence, and possible effects due to the superconducting transition and the onset of strange metal behavior are either absent or below the detection limit of our experiment. Taking into account the strongly correlated character of the cuprates, we show that layered $t$-$J$-$V$ model calculations accurately capture the increase of the plasmon energy in the underdoped regime. However, the computed plasmon energy continues to increase even for doping levels above $x \gtrsim 0.16$, which is distinct from the experimentally observed saturation, and reaches a broad maximum around $x = 0.55$. We discuss whether possible lattice disorder in overdoped samples, a renormalization of the electronic correlation strength at high dopings, or an increasing relevance of non-planar Cu and O orbitals could be responsible for the discrepancy between experiment and theory for doping levels above $x = 0.16$.

Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) underpins exotic forms of order ranging from superconductivity to superfluid 4 He. In quantum magnetic materials, ordered phases induced by an applied magnetic field can be described as the BEC of magnon excitations. With sufficiently strong magnetic frustration, exemplified by the system SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ , no clear magnon BEC is observed and the complex spectrum of multi-magnon bound states may allow a different type of condensation, but the high fields required to probe this physics have remained a barrier to detailed investigation. Here we exploit the first purpose-built high-field neutron scattering facility to measure the spin excitations of SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ up to 25.9 T and use cylinder matrix-product-states (MPS) calculations to reproduce the experimental spectra with high accuracy. Multiple unconventional features point to a condensation of $S = 2$ bound states into a spin-nematic phase, including the gradients of the one-magnon branches, the presence of many novel composite two- and three-triplon excitations and the persistence of a one-magnon spin gap. This gap reflects a direct analogy with superconductivity, suggesting that the spin-nematic phase in SrCu$_2$(BO$_3$)$_2$ is best understood as a condensate of bosonic Cooper pairs. Our results underline the wealth of unconventional states yet to be found in frustrated quantum magnetic materials under extreme conditions.

Resonant Inelastic X-ray Scattering (RIXS) was used to measure the local electronic structure in few-layer exfoliated flakes of the van der Waals antiferromagnet NiPS$_3$. The resulting spectra show a systematic softening and broadening of $NiS_6$ multiplet excitations with decreasing layer count from the bulk to three atomic layers (3L). These trends are driven by a decrease in the transition metal-ligand and ligand-ligand hopping integrals, and in the charge-transfer energy: $\Delta$ = 0.60 eV in the bulk and 0.22 eV in 3L NiPS$_3$. Relevant intralayer magnetic exchange integrals computed from the electronic parameters exhibit a systematic decrease in the average interaction strength with thickness and place 2D NiPS$_3$ close to the phase boundary between stripy and spiral antiferromagnetic order, which may explain the apparent vanishing of long-range order in the 2D limit. This study explicitly demonstrates the influence of $inter$layer electronic interactions on $intra$layer ones in insulating magnets. As a consequence, the magnetic Hamiltonian in few-layer insulating magnets can be significantly different from that in the bulk.

The ability to efficiently control charge and spin in the cuprate high-temperature superconductors is crucial for fundamental research and underpins technological development. Here, we explore the tunability of magnetism, superconductivity and crystal structure in the stripe phase of the cuprate La_2-xBa_xCuO_4, with x = 0.115 and 0.135, by employing temperature-dependent (down to 400 mK) muon-spin rotation and AC susceptibility, as well as X-ray scattering experiments under compressive uniaxial stress in the CuO_2 plane. A sixfold increase of the 3-dimensional (3D) superconducting critical temperature T_c and a full recovery of the 3D phase coherence is observed in both samples with the application of extremely low uniaxial stress of 0.1 GPa. This finding demonstrates the removal of the well-known 1/8-anomaly of cuprates by uniaxial stress. On the other hand, the spin-stripe order temperature as well as the magnetic fraction at 400 mK show only a modest decrease under stress. Moreover, the onset temperatures of 3D superconductivity and spin-stripe order are very similar in the large stress regime. However, a substantial decrease of the magnetic volume fraction and a full suppression of the low-temperature tetragonal structure is found at elevated temperatures, which is a necessary condition for the development of the 3D superconducting phase with optimal T_c. Our results evidence a remarkable cooperation between the long-range static spin-stripe order and the underlying crystalline order with the three-dimensional fully coherent superconductivity. Overall, these results suggest that the stripe- and the SC order may have a common physical mechanism.

The progress of miniaturisation in integrated electronics has led to atomic and nanometre-sized dopant devices in silicon. Such structures can be fabricated routinely by hydrogen resist lithography, using various dopants such as phosphorous and arsenic. However, the ability to non-destructively obtain atomic-species-specific images of the final structure, which would be an indispensable tool for building more complex nano-scale devices, such as quantum co-processors, remains an unresolved challenge. Here we exploit X-ray fluorescence to create an element-specific image of As dopants in silicon, with dopant densities in absolute units and a resolution limited by the beam focal size (here $\sim1~\mu$m), without affecting the device's low temperature electronic properties. The As densities provided by the X-ray data are compared to those derived from Hall effect measurements as well as the standard non-repeatable, scanning tunnelling microscopy and secondary ion mass spectroscopy, techniques. Before and after the X-ray experiments, we also measured the magneto-conductance, dominated by weak localisation, a quantum interference effect extremely sensitive to sample dimensions and disorder. Notwithstanding the $1.5\times10^{10}$ Sv ($1.5\times10^{16}$ Rad/cm$^{-2}$) exposure of the device to X-rays, all transport data were unchanged to within experimental errors, corresponding to upper bounds of 0.2 Angstroms for the radiation-induced motion of the typical As atom and 3$\%$ for the loss of activated, carrier-contributing dopants. With next generation synchrotron radiation sources and more advanced optics, we foresee that it will be possible to obtain X-ray images of single dopant atoms within resolved radii of 5 nm.

We present small angle neutron scattering studies of the magnetic vortex lattice (VL) in Ca$_{0.04}$Y$_{0.96}$Ba$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$ up to a field of 16.7 T, and Ca$_{0.15}$Y$_{0.85}$Ba$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$O$_{7}$ up to 25 T. We find that the series of vortex lattice structure transitions have shifted down in field relative to those reported for the undoped compound. We attribute this mainly to the weakening of the 1-D superconductivity in the Cu-O chains by the disorder introduced by doping. The hole doping by calcium is also expected to alter the Fermi velocity and it reduces the upper critical field of the system. The high-field structure of the vortex lattice is similar to recent measurements on the parent compound in fields of 25~T, which indicates that the fundamental \textitd-wave nature of the superconducting gap is unchanged by calcium doping. This is corroborated by the temperature dependence of the VL form factor which also shows the same \textitd-wave behaviour as observed in other cuprates. We also find evidence of Pauli paramagnetic effects in the field dependence of the VL form factor.

We present an in-situ uniaxial pressure device optimized for small angle X-ray and neutron scattering experiments at low-temperatures and high magnetic fields. A stepper motor generates force, which is transmitted to the sample via a rod with integrated transducer that continuously monitors the force. The device has been designed to generate forces up to 200 N in both compressive and tensile configurations and a feedback control allows operating the system in a continuous-pressure mode as the temperature is changed. The uniaxial pressure device can be used for various instruments and multiple cryostats through simple and exchangeable adapters. It is compatible with multiple sample holders, which can be easily changed depending on the sample properties and the desired experiment and allow rapid sample changes.

BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$ is a quasi-two-dimensional (2D) quantum antiferromagnet containing three different types of stacked, square-lattice bilayer hosting spin-1/2 dimers. Although this compound has been studied extensively over the last two decades, the critical applied magnetic field required to close the dimer spin gap and induce magnetic order, which exceeds 23 T, has to date precluded any kind of neutron scattering investigation. However, the HFM/EXED instrument at the Helmholtz-Zentrum Berlin made this possible at magnetic fields up to 25.9 T. Thus we have used HFM/EXED to investigate the field-induced ordered phase, in particular to look for quasi-2D physics arising from the layered structure and from the different bilayer types. From neutron diffraction data, we determined the global dependence of the magnetic order parameter on both magnetic field and temperature, finding a form consistent with 3D quantum critical scaling; from this we deduce that the quasi-2D interactions and nonuniform layering of BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$ are not anisotropic enough to induce hallmarks of 2D physics. From neutron spectroscopy data, we measured the dispersion of the strongly Zeeman-split magnetic excitations, finding good agreement with the zero-field interaction parameters of BaCuSi$_2$O$_6$. We conclude that HFM/EXED allowed a significant extension in the application of neutron scattering techniques to the field range above 20 T and in particular opened new horizons in the study of field-induced magnetic quantum phase transitions.

We report on the evolution with magnetic field and temperature of the vortex lattice (VL) in fully-oxygenated YBa2Cu3O7 as studied by time-of-flight small angle neutron scattering. Using the HFM/EXED beamline, we have obtained data up to 25.9 T - much higher than that available previously. Our VL structure results indicate the progressive suppression by field of the superconductivity along the crystallographic b (CuO chain) direction. The intensity of the diffracted signal reveals the spatial variation of magnetization caused by the VL (the "form factor"). Instead of a rapid fall-off with field, as seen in superconductors with smaller upper critical fields, we find that the form factor is almost constant with field above about 12 T. We speculate that this is due to Pauli paramagnetic moments, which increase at high fields due to alignment of the spins of quasiparticles in the vortex cores.

We present a study of Cu-substitution effects in 4f-Ce intermetallic compound CeAu1-xCuxGe, with potentially unusual electronic states, in the whole concentration range (x = 0.0 - 1.0). The parent CeAuGe compound, crystallizing in a non-centrosymmetric hexagonal structure, is a ferromagnetic semimetal with Curie temperature 10 K. Cu-doping on Au-site of CeAuGe, CeAu1-xCuxGe, changes the crystal structure from the non-centrosymmetric (P63mc) to centrosymmetric (P63/mmc) space group at the concentration x ~ 0.5, where the c-lattice constant has a maximum value. Magnetic susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements reveal that all Cu-doped compounds undergo magnetic phase transition near 10 K, with the maximum transition temperature of 12 K for x = 0.5. The neutron powder diffraction experiments show the ferromagnetic ordering of Ce3+ magnetic moments with a value of ~ 1.2 Bohr magneton at 1.8 K, oriented perpendicular to the hexagonal c-axis. By using symmetry analysis, we have found the solutions for the magnetic structure in the ferromagnetic Shubnikov space groups Cmc'21' and P21'/m' for x < 0.5 and x >= 0.5, respectively. Electrical resistivity exhibits a metallic temperature behaviour in all compounds. The resistivity has a local minimum in the paramagnetic state due to Kondo effects at high doping x = 0.8 and 1.0. At the small Cu-doping level, x = 0.2, the resistivity shows a broad feature at the ferromagnetic transition temperature and an additional transition-like peculiarity at 2.5 K in the ferromagnetic state.

Measurement of the absolute value of the applied pressure in high-pressure muon and neutron experiments is a complicated task. It requires both the presence of a calibration material inside the sample volume as well as additional time for refining the response of the calibrant. Here we describe the use of optical calibrants for precise determination of the pressure value inside the piston-cylinder clamp cells. Utilizing the concept of separate volumes for the sample and the optical media, a new setup for conducting in-situ pressure measurements has been successfully tested. Pressures in both the `sample' and the `optical' volumes were proved to be the same within experimental accuracy. The use of SrB$_{4}$O$_7$:(0.01 Sm$^{2+}$, 0.03 Eu$^{2+}$) as a pressure calibrant allows for a high accuracy of pressure determination by considering up to eight fluorescence lines.

The recently discovered kagome superconductor CsV$_3$Sb$_5$ ($T_c \simeq 2.5$ K) has been found to host charge order as well as a non-trivial band topology, encompassing multiple Dirac points and probable surface states. Such a complex and phenomenologically rich system is, therefore, an ideal playground for observing unusual electronic phases. Here, we report on microscopic studies of its anisotropic superconducting properties by means of transverse-field muon spin rotation ($\mu$SR) experiments. The temperature dependences of the in-plane and out-of-plane components of the magnetic penetration depth $\lambda_{ab}^{-2}(T)$ and $\lambda_{c}^{-2}(T)$ indicate that the superconducting order parameter exhibits a two-gap ($s+s$)-wave symmetry, reflecting the multiple Fermi surfaces of CsV3Sb5. The multiband nature of its superconductivity is further validated by the different temperature dependences of the anisotropic magnetic penetration depth $\gamma_\lambda(T)$ and upper critical field $\gamma_{\rm B_{c2}}(T)$, both in close analogy with the well known two-gap superconductor MgB$_2$. Remarkably, the high value of the $T_c/\lambda^{-2}(0)$ ratio in both field orientations strongly suggests the unconventional nature of superconductivity. The relaxation rates obtained from zero field $\mu$SR experiments do not show noticeable change across the superconducting transition, indicating that superconductivity does not break time reversal symmetry.

We report muon spin rotation and magnetic susceptibility experiments on in-plane stress effects on the static spin-stripe order and superconductivity in the cuprate system La2-xBaxCuO4 with x = 0.115. An extremely low uniaxial stress of 0.1 GPa induces a substantial decrease in the magnetic volume fraction and a dramatic rise in the onset of 3D superconductivity, from 10 to 32 K; however, the onset of at-least-2D superconductivity is much less sensitive to stress. These results show not only that large-volume-fraction spin-stripe order is anti-correlated with 3D superconducting (SC) coherence, but also that these states are energetically very finely balanced. Moreover, the onset temperatures of 3D superconductivity and spin-stripe order are very similar in the large stress regime. These results strongly suggest a similar pairing mechanism for spin-stripe order, the spatially-modulated 2D and uniform 3D SC orders, imposing an important constraint on theoretical models.

We report on the commissioning results of the cold neutron multiplexing secondary spectrometer CAMEA (\textbfContinuous \textbfAngle \textbfMulti-\textbfEnergy \textbfAnalysis) at the Swiss Spallation Neutron Source (SINQ) at the Paul Scherrer Institut, Switzerland. CAMEA is optimized for an efficient data acquisition of scattered neutrons in the horizontal scattering plane, allowing for detailed and rapid mapping of low-energy excitations under extreme sample environment conditions.

We report an unexpected magnetic-field-driven magnetic structure in the 5f-electron Shastry- Sutherland system U2Pd2In. This phase develops at low temperatures from a noncollinear antiferromagnetic ground state above the critical field of 25.8 T applied along the a-axis. All U moments have a net magnetic moment in the direction of the applied field, described by a ferromagnetic propagation vector qF = (0 0 0) and an antiferromagnetic component described by a propagation vector qAF = (0 0.30 1/2 ) due to a modulation in the direction perpendicular to the applied field. We conclude that this surprising noncollinear magnetic structure is due to a competition between the single-ion anisotropy trying to keep moments, similar to the ground state, along the [110]-type directions, Dzyaloshinskii-Moryia interaction forcing them to be perpendicular to each other and application of the external magnetic field attempting to align them along the field direction.

Neutron diffraction with static and pulsed magnetic fields is used to directly probe the magnetic structures in LiNiPO$_4$ up to 25T and 42T, respectively. By combining these results with magnetometry and electric polarization measurements under pulsed fields, the magnetic and magnetoelectric phases are investigated up to 56T applied along the easy $c$-axis. In addition to the already known transitions at lower fields, three new ones are reported at 37.6, 39.4 and 54T. Ordering vectors are identified with ${\bf Q}_{\mathrm{VI}}$ = (0, 1/3, 0) in the interval 37.6--39.4T and ${\bf Q}_{\mathrm{VII}}$ = (0, 0, 0) in the interval 39.4-54T. A quadratic magnetoelectric effect is discovered in the ${\bf Q}_{\mathrm{VII}}$ = (0, 0, 0) phase and the field-dependence of the induced electric polarization is described using a simple mean-field model. The observed magnetic structure and magnetoelectric tensor elements point to a change in the lattice symmetry in this phase. We speculate on the possible physical mechanism responsible for the magnetoelectric effect in LiNiPO4.

Using single crystal neutron scattering we show that the magnetic structure Ni$_3$TeO$_6$ at fields above 8.6 T along the $c$ axis changes from a commensurate collinear antiferromagnetic structure with spins along c and ordering vector $Q_C$= (0 0 1.5), to a conical spiral with propagation vector $Q_{IC}$= (0 0 1.5$\pm\delta$),$\delta\sim$0.18, having a significant spin component in the ($a$,$b$) plane. We determine the phase diagram of this material in magnetic fields up to 10.5 T along $c$ and show the phase transition between the low field and conical spiral phases is of first order by observing a discontinuous jump of the ordering vector. $Q_{IC}$ is found to drift both as function of magnetic field and temperature. Preliminary inelastic neutron scattering reveals that the spin wave gap in zero field has minima exactly at $Q_{IC}$ and a gap of about 1.1 meV consisting with a cross-over around 8.6 T. Our findings excludes the possibility of the inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction as a cause for the giant magneto-electric coupling earlier observed in this material and advocates for the symmetric exchangestriction as the origin of this effect.

Frustrated spin-1/2 chains, despite the apparent simplicity, exhibit remarkably rich phase diagram comprising vector-chiral (VC), spin-density-wave (SDW) and multipolar/spin-nematic phases as a function of the magnetic field. Here we report a study of $\beta$-TeVO$_4$, an archetype of such compounds, based on magnetization and neutron diffraction measurements up to 25 T. We find the transition from the helical VC ground state to the SDW state at $\sim$3 T for the magnetic field along the $a$ and $c$ crystal axes, and at $\sim$9 T for the field along the $b$ axis. The high-field (HF) state, existing above $\sim$18 T, i.e., above $\sim$1/2 of the saturated magnetization, is an incommensurate magnetically ordered state and not the spin-nematic state, as theoretically predicted for the isotropic frustrated spin-1/2 chain. The HF state is likely driven by sizable interchain interactions and symmetric intrachain anisotropies uncovered in previous studies. Consequently, the potential existence of the spin nematic phase in $\beta$-TeVO$_4$ is limited to a narrow field range, i.e., a few tenths of a tesla bellow the saturation of the magnetization, as also found in other frustrated spin-1/2 chain compounds.

Quantum materials that feature magnetic long-range order often reveal complex phase diagrams when localized electrons become mobile. In many materials magnetism is rapidly suppressed as electronic charges dissolve into the conduction band. In materials where magnetism persists, it is unclear how the magnetic properties are affected. Here we study the evolution of the magnetic structure in Nd(1-x)Ce(x)CoIn(5) from the localized to the highly itinerant limit. We observe two magnetic ground states inside a heavy-fermion phase that are detached from unconventional superconductivity. The presence of two different magnetic phases provides evidence that increasing charge delocalization affects the magnetic interactions via anisotropic band hybridization.

A state of matter with a multi-component order parameter can give rise to vestigial order. In the vestigial phase, the primary order is only partially melted, leaving a remaining symmetry breaking behind, an effect driven by strong classical or quantum fluctuations. Vestigial states due to primary spin and charge-density-wave order have been discussed in the context of iron-based and cuprate materials. Here we present the observation of a partially melted superconductor in which pairing fluctuations condense at a separate phase transition and form a nematic state with broken Z3, i.e. three-state Potts-model symmetry. High-resolution thermal expansion, specific heat and magnetization measurements of the doped topological insulator NbxBi2Se3 reveal that this symmetry breaking occurs at Tnem=3.8 K above Tc=3.25 K, along with an onset of superconducting fluctuations. Thus, before Cooper pairs establish long-range coherence at Tc, they fluctuate in a way that breaks the rotational invariance at Tnem and induces a distortion of the crystalline lattice. Similar results are found for CuxBi2Se3.

We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the mineral atacamite Cu$_2$Cl(OH)$_3$. Density functional theory yields a Hamiltonian describing anisotropic sawtooth chains with weak 3D connections. Experimentally, we fully characterize the antiferromagnetically ordered state. Magnetic order shows a complex evolution with the magnetic field, while, starting at 31.5 T, we observe a plateau-like magnetization at about $M_{\rm sat}/2$. Based on complementary theoretical approaches, we show that the latter is unrelated to the known magnetization plateau of a sawtooth chain. Instead, we provide evidence that the magnetization process in atacamite is a field-driven canting of a 3D network of weakly coupled sawtooth chains that form giant moments.

Using small-angle neutron scattering (SANS), we investigate the deformation of the magnetic skyrmion lattice in bulk single-crystalline MnSi under electric current flow. A significant broadening of the skyrmion-lattice-reflection peaks was observed in the SANS pattern for current densities greater than a threshold value j_t ~ 1 MA/m^2 (10^6 A/m^2). We show this peak broadening to originate from a spatially inhomogeneous rotation of the skyrmion lattice, with an inverse rotation sense observed for opposite sample edges aligned with the direction of current flow. The peak broadening (and the corresponding skyrmion lattice rotations) remain finite even after switching off the electric current. These results indicate that skyrmion lattices under current flow experience significant friction near the sample edges, and plastic deformation due to pinning effects, these being important factors that must be considered for the anticipated skyrmion-based applications in chiral magnets at the nanoscale.

Due to their topological protection and nanometric size, magnetic skyrmions are anticipated to form components of new high-density memory technologies. In metallic systems skyrmion manipulation is achieved easily under a low density electric current flow, although the inevitable thermal dissipation ultimately limits the energy efficacy of potential applications. On the other hand, a near dissipation-free skyrmion and skyrmion phase manipulation is expected by using electric \emphfields, thus meeting better the demands of an energy-conscious society. In this work on an insulating chiral magnet Cu$_{2}$OSeO$_{3}$ with magnetoelectric coupling, we use neutron scattering to demonstrate directly i) the creation of metastable skyrmion states over an extended range in magnetic field and temperature, and ii) the in-situ electric field-driven switching between topologically distinct phases; the skyrmion phase and a competing non-topological cone phase. For our accessible electric field range, the phase switching is achieved in a high temperature regime, and the remnant (E=0) metastable skyrmion state is thermally volatile with an exponential lifetime on hour timescales. Nevertheless, by taking advantage of the demonstrably longer-lived metastable skyrmion states at lower temperatures, a truly non-volatile and near dissipation-free topological phase change memory function is promised in magnetoelectric chiral magnets.

Determining the fate of the Pauling entropy in the classical spin ice material Dy$_2$Ti$_2$O$_7$ with respect to the third law of thermodynamics has become an important test case for understanding the existence and stability of ice-rule states in general. The standard model of spin ice - the dipolar spin ice model - predicts an ordering transition at $T\approx 0.15$ K, but recent experiments by Pomaranski $et\ al.$ suggest an entropy recovery over long time scales at temperatures as high as $0.5$ K, much too high to be compatible with theory. Using neutron scattering and specific heat measurements at low temperatures and with long time scales ($0.35$ K$/10^6$ s and $0.5$ K$/10^5$ s respectively) on several isotopically enriched samples we find no evidence of a reduction of ice-rule correlations or spin entropy. High-resolution simulations of the neutron structure factor show that the spin correlations remain well described by the dipolar spin ice model at all temperatures. Further, by careful consideration of hyperfine contributions, we conclude that the original entropy measurements of Ramirez $et\ al.$ are, after all, essentially correct: the short-time relaxation method used in that study gives a reasonably accurate estimate of the equilibrium spin ice entropy due to a cancellation of contributions.

We report that in a $\beta$-Mn-type chiral magnet Co$_9$Zn$_9$Mn$_2$, skyrmions are realized as a metastable state over a wide temperature range, including room temperature, via field-cooling through the thermodynamic equilibrium skyrmion phase that exists below a transition temperature $T_\mathrm{c}$ $\sim$ 400 K. The once-created metastable skyrmions survive at zero magnetic field both at and above room temperature. Such robust skyrmions in a wide temperature and magnetic field region demonstrate the key role of topology, and provide a significant step toward technological applications of skyrmions in bulk chiral magnets.

We report the high-field induced magnetic phase in single crystal of U(Ru0.92Rh0.08)2Si2. Our neutron study combined with high-field magnetization, shows that the magnetic phase above the first metamagnetic transition at Hc1 = 21.6 T has an uncompensated commensurate antiferromagnetic structure with propagation vector Q2 = ( 2/3 0 0) possessing two single-Q domains. U moments of 1.45 (9) muB directed along the c axis are arranged in an up-up-down sequence propagating along the a axis, in agreement with bulk measurements. The U magnetic form factor at high fields is consistent with both the U3+ and U4+ type. The low field short-range order that emerges from the pure URu2Si2 due to Rh-doping is initially strengthened by the field but disappears in the field-induced phase. The tetragonal symmetry is preserved across the transition but the a axis lattice parameter increases already at low fields. Our results are in agreement with itinerant electron model with 5f states forming bands pinned in the vicinity of the Fermi surface that is significantly reconstructed by the applied magnetic field.

Nd0.05Ce0.95CoIn5 features a magnetic field-driven quantum phase transition that separates two antiferromagnetic phases with an identical magnetic structure inside the superconducting condensate. Using neutron diffraction we demonstrate that the population of the two magnetic domains in the two phases is affected differently by the rotation of the magnetic field in the tetragonal basal plane. In the low-field SDW-phase the domain population is only weakly affected while in the high-field Q-phase they undergo a sharp switch for fields around the a-axis. Our results provide evidence that the anisotropic spin susceptibility in both phases arises ultimately from spin-orbit interactions but are qualitatively different in the two phases. This provides evidence that the electronic structure is changed at the quantum phase transition, which yields a modified coupling between magnetism and superconductivity in the Q-phase.

The magnetic phase diagram of magnetoelectric LiCoPO$_4$ is established using neutron diffraction and magnetometry in fields up to 25.9T applied along the crystallographic $b$-axis. For fields greater than 11.9T the magnetic unit cell triples in size with propagation vector Q = (0, 1/3, 0). A magnetized elliptic cycloid is formed with spins in the $(b,c)$-plane and the major axis oriented along $b$. Such a structure allows for the magnetoelectric effect with an electric polarization along $c$ induced by magnetic fields applied along $b$. Intriguingly, additional ordering vectors Q $\approx$ (0, 1/4, 0) and Q $\approx$ (0, 1/2, 0) appear for increasing fields in the hysteresis region below the transition field. Traces of this behavior are also observed in the magnetization. A simple model based on a mean-field approach is proposed to explain these additional ordering vectors. In the field interval 20.5-21.0T, the propagation vector Q = (0, 1/3, 0) remains but the spins orient differently compared to the cycloid phase. Above 21.0T and up until saturation a commensurate magnetic structure exists with a ferromagnetic component along $b$ and an antiferromagnetic component along $c$.

In the past years, magnetism-driven ferroelectricity and gigantic magnetoelectric effects have been reported for a number of frustrated magnets with spiral magnetic orders. Such materials are of high current interest due to their potential for spintronics and low-power magnetoelectric devices. However, their low magnetic order temperatures (typically <100K) greatly restrict their fields of application. Here we demonstrate that the stability domain of the spiral phase in the perovskite YBaCuFeO5 can be enlarged by more than 150K through a controlled manipulation of the Fe/Cu chemical disorder. Moreover we show that this novel mechanism can stabilize the magnetic spiral state of YBaCuFeO5 above the symbolic value of 25\degC at zero magnetic field. Our findings demonstrate that the properties of a magnetic spiral, including its wavelength and stability range, can be engineered through the control of chemical disorder, offering a great potential for the design of materials with magnetoelectric properties beyond room temperature.

Superconductivity and magnetic order strongly compete in many conventional superconductors, at least partly because both tend to gap the Fermi surface. In magnetically-ordered conventional superconductors, the competition between these cooperative phenomena leads to anomalies at magnetic and superconducting phase boundaries. Here we reveal that in Pr2Pt3Ge5 superconducting and multiple magnetic order are intertwined within the same HT-phase space, but remain completely decoupled. Our thermal conductivity measurements provide evidence for normal electrons in the superconducting phase from which magnetic order emerges with negligible coupling to electron bands that contribute to superconductivity.

We report structural evidence of dynamic reorganization in vortex matter in clean NbSe$_2$ by joint small angle neutron scattering and ac-susceptibility measurements. The application of oscillatory forces in a transitional region near the order-disorder transition results in robust bulk vortex lattice configurations with an intermediate degree of disorder. These dynamically-originated configurations correlate with intermediate pinning responses previously observed, resolving a long standing debate regarding the origin of such responses.

Motivated by the recent observations of incommensurate magnetic order and electric polarization in YBaCuFeO5 up to temperatures TN2 as high as 230K [1,2] we report here for the first time a model for the incommensurate magnetic structure of this material that we complement with ab-initio calculations of the magnetic exchange parameters. Using neutron powder diffraction we show that the appearance of polarization below TN2 is accompanied by the replacement of the high temperature collinear magnetic order by a circular inclined spiral with propagation vector ki=(1/2, 1/2, 1/2+-q). Moreover, we find that the polarization approximately scales with the modulus of the magnetic modulation vector q down to the lowest temperature investigated (T=3K). Further, we observe occupational Fe/Cu disorder in the FeO5-CuO5 bipyramids, although a preferential occupation of such units by Fe-Cu pairs is supported by the observed magnetic order and by density functional calculations. We calculate exchange coupling constants for different Fe/Cu distributions and show that, for those containing Fe-Cu dimers, the resulting magnetic order is compatible with the experimentally observed collinear magnetic structure (kc=(1/2, 1/2, 1/2), TN2 > T > TN1 = 440K). Based on these results we discuss possible origins for the incommensurate modulation and its coupling with ferroelectricity.

Uniquely in Cu2OSeO3, the Skyrmions, which are topologically protected magnetic spin vortex-like objects, display a magnetoelectric coupling and can be manipulated by externally applied electric (E) fields. Here, we explore the E-field coupling to the magnetoelectric Skyrmion lattice phase, and study the response using neutron scattering. Giant E-field induced rotations of the Skyrmion lattice are achieved that span a range of $\sim$25$^{\circ}$. Supporting calculations show that an E-field-induced Skyrmion distortion lies behind the lattice rotation. Overall, we present a new approach to Skyrmion control that makes no use of spin-transfer torques due to currents of either electrons or magnons.

The interplay of magnetic and charge fluctuations can lead to quantum phases with exceptional electronic properties. A case in point is magnetically-driven superconductivity, where magnetic correlations fundamentally affect the underlying symmetry and generate new physical properties. The superconducting wave-function in most known magnetic superconductors does not break translational symmetry. However, it has been predicted that modulated triplet p-wave superconductivity occurs in singlet d-wave superconductors with spin-density wave (SDW) order. Here we report evidence for the presence of a spatially inhomogeneous p-wave Cooper pair-density wave (PDW) in CeCoIn5. We show that the SDW domains can be switched completely by a tiny change of the magnetic field direction, which is naturally explained by the presence of triplet superconductivity. Further, the Q-phase emerges in a common magneto-superconducting quantum critical point. The Q-phase of CeCoIn5 thus represents an example where spatially modulated superconductivity is associated with SDW order.

We report on a comprehensive de Haas--van Alphen (dHvA) study of the iron pnictide LaFe$_2$P$_2$. Our extensive density-functional band-structure calculations can well explain the measured angular-dependent dHvA frequencies. As salient feature, we observe only one quasi-two-dimensional Fermi-surface sheet, i.e., a hole-like Fermi-surface cylinder around $\Gamma$, essential for $s_\pm$ pairing, is missing. In spite of considerable mass enhancements due to many-body effects, LaFe$_2$P$_2$ shows no superconductivity. This is likely caused by the absence of any nesting between electron and hole bands.

Small-angle neutron scattering has been employed to study the influence of applied electric (E-) fields on the skyrmion lattice in the chiral lattice magnetoelectric Cu2OSeO3. In an experimental geometry with the E-field parallel to the [111] axis, and the magnetic field parallel to the [1-10] axis, we demonstrate that the effect of applying an E-field is to controllably rotate the skyrmion lattice around the magnetic field axis. Our results are an important first demonstration for a microscopic coupling between applied E-fields and the skyrmions in an insulator, and show that the general emergent properties of skyrmions may be tailored according to the properties of the host system.

The tetragonal compound UPt2Si2 has been characterised as a moderately mass enhanced system with an antiferromagnetic ground state below T_N = 32 K. Here, we present an extensive study of the behavior in high magnetic fields. We have performed pulsed field magnetization and static field resistivity measurements on single crystalline samples UPt2Si2. Along the crystallographic a axis, at low temperatures, we find a metamagnetic-like transition in fields of the order 40 T, possibly indicating a first order transition. Along the crystallographic c axis, in magnetic fields of B>= ~24 T, we find distinct anomalies in both properties. From our analysis of the data we can distinguish new high field phases above the AFM ground state. We discuss the emergence of these new phases in the context of Fermi surface effects and the possible occurrence of a Lifshitz or electronic topological transition, this in contrast to previous modellings of UPt2Si2 based on crystal electric field effects.

Neutron diffraction measurements on multiferroic LuFe2O4 show changes in the antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure characterized by wavevector q = (1/3 1/3 1/2) as a function of electric field cooling procedures. The increase of intensity from all magnetic domains and the decrease in the 2D magnetic order observed below the Neel temperature are indicative of increased ferroelectric charge order. The AFM order changes the dynamics of the CO state, and stabilizes it. It is determined that the increase in electric polarization observed at the magnetic ordering temperature is due to a transition from paramagnetic 2D charge order to AFM 3D charge order.

We report on semiclassical angle-dependent magnetoresistance oscillations (AMRO) and the Shubnikov-de Haas effect in the electron-overdoped cuprate superconductor Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$. Our data provide convincing evidence for magnetic breakdown in the system. This shows that a reconstructed multiply-connected Fermi surface persists, at least at strong magnetic fields, up to the highest doping level of the superconducting regime. Our results suggest an intimate relation between translational symmetry breaking and the superconducting pairing in the electron-doped cuprate superconductors.

These samples exhibit a slightly enhanced superconducting transition at T_c = 28.5 K and a significantly enlarged slope dB_c2/dT = -5.4 T/K near T_c which contrasts with a flattening of B_c2(T) starting near 23 K above 30 T. The latter evidences Pauli limiting behaviour (PLB) with B_c2(0) approximately 63 T. We compare our results with B_c2(T)-data from the literature for clean and disordered samples. Whereas clean samples show almost no PLB for fields below 60 to 70 T, the hitherto unexplained pronounced flattening of B_c2(T) for applied fields H II ab observed for several disordered closely related systems is interpreted also as a manifestation of PLB. Consequences are discussed in terms of disorder effects within the frames of (un)conventional superconductivity, respectively.

We investigated the temperature dependence of the upper critical field [$H_{c2}(T)$] of fluorine-free SmFeAsO$_{0.85}$ and fluorine-doped SmFeAsO$_{0.8}$F$_{0.2}$ single crystals by measuring the resistive transition in low static magnetic fields and in pulsed fields up to 60 T. Both crystals show that $H_{c2}(T)$'s along the c axis [$H_{c2}^c(T)$] and in an $ab$-planar direction [$H_{c2}^{ab}(T)$] exhibit a linear and a sublinear increase, respectively, with decreasing temperature below the superconducting transition. $H_{c2}(T)$'s in both directions deviate from the conventional one-gap Werthamer-Helfand-Hohenberg theoretical prediction at low temperatures. A two-gap nature and the paramagnetic pair-breaking effect are shown to be responsible for the temperature-dependent behavior of $H_{c2}^c$ and $H_{c2}^{ab}$, respectively.

We report on the direct probing of the Fermi surface in the bulk of the electron-doped superconductor Nd$_{2-x}$Ce$_x$CuO$_4$ at different doping levels by means of magnetoresistance quantum oscillations. Our data reveal a sharp qualitative change in the Fermi surface topology, due to translational symmetry breaking in the electronic system which occurs at a critical doping level significantly exceeding the optimal doping. This result implies that the $(\pi/a,\pi/a)$ ordering, known to exist at low doping levels, survives up to the overdoped superconducting regime.

We report B_c2 data for LaO_0.9F_0.1FeAs_1-delta in a wide T and field range up to 60 Tesla. The large slope of B_c2 approx ~ -6 Tesla/K near an improved T_c = 28.5 K of the in-plane B_c2(T) contrasts with a flattening starting at 23 K above 30 Tesla we regard as the onset of Pauli-limited behavior (PLB) with B_c2(0) about 65 Tesla. We interpret a similar hitherto unexplained flattening of the B_c2(T) curves reported for at least three other disordered closely related systems as also as a manifestation of PLB. Their Maki parameters have been estimated analyzing their B_c2(T) data within the WHH approach. The pronounced PLB of (Ba,K)Fe_2As_2 single crystals from a tin-flux is attributed also to a significant As deficiency. Consequences of our results are discussed in terms of disorder effects within conventional (CSC) and unconventional superconductivity (USC). USC scenarios with nodes on individual Fermi surface sheets (FSS), can be discarded for our samples. The increase of dB_c2/dT|_T_c by sizeable disorder provides evidence for an important intraband (intra-FSS) contribution to the orbital upper critical field. We suggest that it can be ascribed either to an impurity driven transition from s_+- USC to CSC of an extended s_++-wave state or to a stabilized s_+--state provided As-vacancies cause predominantly strong intraband scattering in the unitary limit. We compare our results with B_c2 data from the literature with no PLB for fields below 60 to 70 Tesla probed so far. A novel disorder related scenario of a complex interplay of SC with two different competing magnetic instabilities is suggested.

Transmission probability of a domain wall through a magnetic nanowire is investigated as a function of the external magnetic field. Very intriguing phenomenon is found that the transmission probability shows a significant drop after exceeding the threshold driving field, which contradicts our intuition that a domain wall is more mobile in the higher magnetic field. The micromagnetics simulation reveals that the domain wall motion in the wire with finite roughness causes the dynamical pinning due to the Walker breakdown, which semi-quantitatively explains our experimental results.

A new method of refrigeration is proposed. Cooling is obtained by thermionic emission of electrons over periodic barriers in a multilayer geometry. These could be either Schottky barriers between metals and semiconductors or else barriers in a semiconductor superlattice. The same device is an efficient power generator. A complete theory is provided.
